Walnut Street

Walnut Street runs east–west through Camden, New Jersey, from the Delaware River waterfront into the residential neighborhoods of North Camden. The street takes its name from the walnut trees that once lined its route. Like much of Camden’s grid, it was laid out in the eighteenth century and developed steadily through the industrial era, housing workers, tradespeople, churches, saloons, and small businesses alongside family residences. This page documents residents and businesses from the 100 block near the waterfront through the 1300 block at the city’s outer limits.

Seek Possession of Daughter — Mr. and Mrs. Basil Yoppollo, who live just outside Hammonton, have obtained from Vice Chancellor Leaming in Camden, under habeas corpus proceedings, a rule to show cause why Mrs. Catherine Pancoast, of Walnut street, Camden, should not be compelled to give them the custody of their 7-year-old daughter, Rosie. A hearing on the rule is scheduled tomorrow.

According to the allegations of the parents, Mrs. Pancoast visited them some months ago and she took home with her the little girl. Since then they aver they have made unavailing efforts to obtain possession of Rosie, the defendant alleging that another relative of the Yoppollos had let her have the child for an indefinite period. Philadelphia Inquirer, March 17, 1918.

Ask Case Be Reopened — Counsel for Mrs. Catherine Pancoast, of Second and Walnut streets, Camden, from whose custody Vice Chancellor Leaming ordered taken 7-year-old Rosie Poppollo, who was turned over to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Basile Poppollo, of Hammonton, yesterday asked for the right to reopen the habeas corpus proceedings. It was alleged that the parents are not proper persons to retain possession of the little girl, who had been in the custody of Mrs. Pancoast since the child was 3 years old. It was averred further that the Poppollos abuse their daughter. Philadelphia Inquirer, March 20, 1918.

Police Guard Gas Tank

More Men Put to Work and No Trouble Occurs

Thirty men were put at work yesterday on the big gas holder being constructed at Locust and Walnut streets, Camden, in place of the striking riveters. Eighty men from the Camden Iron Works assisted them in lowering the base of the tank.

It was expected trouble would ensue between the workmen and the strikers, but Chief of Police John Foster had a large squad of officers at the scene all day preventing any disturbance.

George Daly, one of the strikers, was held in $600 bail by Recorder Stackhouse, charged with assaulting Edward S. Strang and Charles F. Watkins. Philadelphia Inquirer, August 12, 2004.

Inspectors Arrest Autoists

Impeachment proceedings are to be instituted against Justices of the Peace who refuse to accept complaints from motor vehicle inspectors against alleged violators of the laws regulating the use of motorcycles. An inspector of the State Department made that declaration in Camden yesterday. He declared that the State had decided to act promptly in the matter. He declined to say what would be done if all the Justices of the Peace having jurisdiction along the White Horse pike refused to accept any more complaints. More alleged violators of the laws regulating headlights on automobiles were stopped on the road. This is just slightly, he warned. Justice Jackson, at Magnolia, imposed a fine of $25 on Frank Sadkan, of 12 South Sixty-first street, Philadelphia, who was charged with operating an automobile without a license.

Nelson Graham, 17 years old, of 244 Walnut street, Camden, was arrested by Policeman Walter Mutton at Haddon avenue and Federal street on a charge of violating the traffic laws. The complaint was later withdrawn. John Williams, 21 years old, of Mantua, was arrested on a charge of violating the traffic laws and left $1 as security for his appearance before Recorder Stackhouse. Philadelphia Inquirer, July 22, 1918.

A Baby Run Over and Killed.

A sad accident occurred at Seventh and Walnut streets yesterday morning when the 9-months-old baby of John and Mary Weber, of 712 Walnut street, was run over and killed by a farm wagon driven by Joseph Rusk, of Westville. The accident was caused by the carelessness of another child, who was pushing the coach containing the little one. The child took its hands off the coach when the latter ran into the gutter, upset and threw the infant under the feet of Farmer Rusk’s team. One of the horses planted its foot on the child’s head. The unfortunate baby died before medical aid could be summoned.

Rusk was taken to the City Hall, but was released when the case was explained. Philadelphia Inquirer, August 31, 1890.

Camden Woman Martyr for Sake of Husband

Wife Contracted Fatal Illness While Nursing Spouse, Whose Death Followed Hers

While her husband lay at the point of death, Mrs. Mary Emma Sayers, mother of Street Commissioner Alfred Sayers, passed away at her home, at 755 Walnut street. Her husband, Jacob Sayers, passed away, twelve hours after his wife died. The latter was taken ill with pneumonia about a week ago and his wife contracted the disease while nursing him.

Both were ill in adjoining rooms and when Mrs. Sayers died her partner for nearly half a century seemed cognizant of that fact, although efforts were made to prevent him from learning of it. Mrs. Sayers was an aunt to Assistant Postmaster Charles P. Sayers and City Draughtman William Sayers. Philadelphia Inquirer, November 24, 1914.

Youth Held for Jury For Embezzlement

Julius Snyder, 18, of 815 Walnut street, was held without bail for grand jury action by Police Judge Cohen today, on charges of embezzlement.

Alexander Wallace, 1031 South Ninth street, said from February to August he had sent checks to a bank with his granddaughter, Esther, 17, who lived with him. He charged she and Snyder cashed the checks and faked deposit entries in his book.

Miss Wallace is also in police custody as a material witness but has not been arraigned. Wallace placed the amount of his loss at $1159.52.

When Judge Cohen asked Snyder what they did with the money, the defendant replied: “Oh, lots of things.” Camden Courier-Post, September 12, 1946.
