Bulson Street

Streets of Camden, NJ

Bulson Street

By Phil Cohen

Bulson Street runs east from Broadway to South 11th Street along the railroad tracks that run from Camden to the rest of South Jersey. A farmer named Gilbert Bulson owned a large parcel of land in the area in the 19th century, and the street apparently was named after him. City Directories as far back as 1878 list Bulson Street as running from the Delaware River between Isay Street, possibly present day Chelton Avenue, and Florence Street.

At one time the railroad tracks were at street level, then a bridge was built over the tracks. In modern times this has been known as “the hump.” The old Camden Beer brewery stood at South 6th and Bulson for many years. There were other businesses and homes on the south side of Bulson Street for many years, although today they only exist in the 900 and 1000 blocks. Around 2010 a new street, Ware Street, was laid out on the north side of the tracks between Master and South 10th Streets, and homes have been built that back onto Bulson Street in the 800 and 900 blocks, with a “new” Bulson Street being provided; that being said, there are two Bulson Streets in the 900 block, one on each side of the railroad tracks.
