Kossuth Street

KOSSUTH STREET runs south from 733 Van Hook Street, across Central Avenue, Ferry Avenue, Jefferson Avenue, and Chelton Avenue, ending at the railroad tracks. Named for famed Hungarian revolutionary Louis Kossuth, it appears to have been laid out prior to 1871, while that part of Camden was still Newton Township. Kossuth Street originally ended at Jefferson Avenue, but was extended in the early 1940s when the Chelton Terrace Public Housing project was built.

EARLY MORNING BLAZE IN CAMDEN

Three houses near the corner of Van Hook and Kossuth streets took fire before daybreak and all were burned to the ground. The conflagration destroyed the houses owned by John Ring, at Kossuth and Van Hook streets, Thomas Biddle's house, at 1702 Kossuth street, and the old wooden building at 1700 Kossuth street. The fire broke out in Ring's house and spread rapidly, owing to the dry condition of the buildings. The fire department was promptly on the scene, and prevented the flames from spreading further. Grain Warehouse Swept by Blaze In So. Camden

GRAIN WAREHOUSE SWEPT BY BLAZE IN SO. CAMDEN

Smoke and Fumes From Smoldering Fire Cover Wide Area

A two-alarm fire, spreading dense smoke and an acrid odor over a mile area, swept a South Camden grain warehouse early today.

The blaze was centered in a 600-ton grain pit at the Camden Grain Co., 1709 Kossuth street, and Acting Fire Chief Edward R. McDowell said it might be necessary to remove most of the grain from its block warehouse before it was extinguished.

The fire was discovered at 4 a. m. by Caspar Krispin, of 2046 Arlington street, the night watchman. He summoned Truck Company 2, which in turn flashed a second alarm that brought in two more engine companies and a truck company.

Capt. Warren Carter, 42, of 239 South Thirty-fourth street, was burned on the left hand when struck by melting tar, falling from the roof of the warehouse. He was treated at West Jersey hospital.

Samuel Adelson, president of the company, said the grain had been purchased from breweries for reprocessing, but that he had no idea of prospective damage because of the smoldering nature of the blaze. The reprocessed grain is sold for cattle feed, Adelson told firemen.

A Christmas tree in the parlor of William Greenan's home, 1731 Kossuth street, caught fire from the candles on Tuesday afternoon, but before the flames had made great headway Mrs. Greenan extinguished them with a bucket of water. 1700 & 1800 Blocks — Franklin D. Roosevelt Manor

In the early 1950s, all properties on the east side of the 1700 Block and all properties on both sides of the 1800 Block of Kossuth Street were acquired and razed to make way for the Franklin D. Roosevelt Manor public housing project. This project was completed by 1954 and was razed in turn in the spring of 2007.

FAKE DENTIST IN CAMDEN

Mrs. Gertrude Pergerm, of 1804 Kossuth street, Camden, was the victim of a man who represented himself as a dentist and extracted teeth from several persons in this city. The man, who has not yet been arrested, called at Mrs. Pergerm's home and offered his services. She allowed him to extract several teeth, suffering considerable pain afterward. One man was burned to death and another was burned about the hands and legs when the explosion of a lamp caused a fire in a barn which had been fitted up as a temporary dwelling in the rear of 751 Ferry avenue, Camden, early yesterday morning. Michael Errieski, 45 years old, the dead man, was ordered to the Morgue by Coroner Rhone, while Stephen Shumluski, 50 years old, the other occupant of the place, was taken to the Homeopathic Hospital. Two boys looking over the ruins discovered the charred body of Errieski two hours after the fire was extinguished.

The flames spread to the home of Ludwig Nijdis, a saloonkeeper at 751 Ferry avenue, causing a loss of about $300, while the homes of Frederick Smith, 755 Ferry avenue, and Mrs. S. J. Rouh, widow of the late Justice of the Peace Rouh, were damaged to the extent of about $300 each. Smith also lost the contents of a plumbing shop. At a time it was believed a horse belonging to Smith had been lost in the fire. Policeman Karl Quinton proved himself a hero by throwing a blanket over the animal’s head and dragging the horse to the street. He also aroused the family of Smith in the nick of time. The home of Mrs. Jennie Stevenson, 1848 Kossuth street, just north of where the fire started, was entirely gutted, causing a loss of about $1,500 to the 2½-story frame structure. Most of the loss is covered by insurance.

THREE YOUTHS ARRESTED IN STOLEN AUTOMOBILE

Three youths arrested in a stolen automobile in Haddon township are being held in the county jail without bail to await the action of the grand jury.

When Police Sergeant Charles Craig saw a car on Crescent boulevard early yesterday without lights he stopped it. None of the three men could produce a registration card for the machine, and he arrested them.

It was learned by the police that the car is owned by Joseph R. Monroe, 139 Lafayette road, Audubon, who parked it in front of the New York shipyard, where he works.

The suspects gave their names as Theodore Hyk, 16, of 341 Hudson street, Gloucester; Charles Di Ciano, 16, of 1909 Kossuth street, and John Gaisor, 17, of 1047 Louis street.

At a hearing before Justice of the Peace Lester T. Kinker at Westmont police headquarters they were held to await the action of the grand jury. Camden Courier-Post, June 6, 1932

FIVE FINED IN RAID AT 703 KAIGHNS AVE.

Five persons arrested in a city police raid on a home at 703 Kaighns ave. early Saturday were fined today. Mrs. Victoria Panon, 41, occupant of the house, was fined $100 on charge of allowing disorderly persons to congregate. Four men charged with playing dice there drew $25 fines. They are Linwood Braxton, 28, of 2000 Kossuth st.; William Dove, 28, of 846 Franklin st.; Willie Watkins, 27, of 902 S. 9th st., and Albert Whiting, 31, of 1010 S. 9th st. All pleaded not guilty.

Acting Capt. Edward Watson, who made the raid with Acting Sgt. Cecil Picou and Patrolman John Dease, said about 15 persons were playing dice on the kitchen table, most of them, police said, escaped by running to the second floor and climbing out a window to a rear shed.
