Ivins Street
Ivins Street was named after Mahlon F. Ivins Sr., a prominent businessman in the 1880s and 1890s. He served two terms on Camden’s City Council and as a Camden County Freeholder. Ivins Street ran for one block between Mt. Vernon Street and Chestnut Street.
The land bounded by Walnut, Chestnut, South 2nd, and Front Streets was consolidated after World War II for industrial development. Ivins Street and Francis Street, another small street that ran between Walnut Street and Chestnut Street, were erased.

Ten-Year-Old Is Victim of Negro

Enticed to an open lot near Mt. Ephraim avenue and Vanhook street last night by an unknown negro, brutally assaulted and kept a prisoner until daybreak this morning, was the harrowing experience of 10-year-old Sarah Matthews, colored, of 1061 Ivins street, who is now in a serious condition in Cooper Hospital.
The child was terribly injured by the brute. Detective George Murray is investigating the revolting case.
Neighbors saw the child lying on a step. She was in great distress and hysterical. The auto patrol with Officers Gutbridge and Broome in charge took the little one to Cooper Hospital. Tightly clenched in her right hand was a quarter, which she said the strange negro gave her.
Promising to buy her some candy she said the man gave her the quarter and said he would take her home. While crossing the lots she says he attacked her. Despite her pleadings he refused to free her and it was not until daybreak that he ran away. Suffering greatly the child dragged herself and fell on the step where she was found.
The child is expected to recover.
‘Forgotten’ Holdup Recalled in Capture of Fifth as Bandit

Police last night cleaned up an old case of highway robbery that occurred at Second and Mt. Vernon Streets last August when Edward A. Turner, 48, of 1104 Cresson Street, was robbed of his watch, chain and knife.
At the time of the hold-up, Turner told police there were four or five colored men in the robbery. Detectives Robert Ward and Clifford Carr arrested Earl Bundy, 17, of 819 Sycamore Street, who they said had the articles in his possession; also Charles Wing, 17, of 1012 Francis Street; Sherman Smith, 17, of 1061 Ivins Street and William Jackman, 16, of 152 Sycamore Street. The last three pleaded guilty and were sentenced to Rahway Reformatory by Judge Samuel Shay.
Bundy pleaded not guilty and was lodged in the local jail.
Last night Ward and Carr with Patrolman Luke captured Oscar Moore, 19, of 135 Mt. Vernon Street as the fifth bandit. He will be held without bail on the same charge as the others.

Camden Resident Drowns at Shore

William M. Jones, 23, of the Jackson Court Apartments, Jackson street near Ninth, drowned Saturday while fishing in Oyster Creek, near Pleasantville.
Jones, employed by the Public Service Electric and Gas Corp., was crab fishing with William Holmes, 1068 Ivins street; Willie Harper, 1060 Ivins street, and Alfred Clayton, 1100 block South Broad street, when he decided to take a swim, state police of the Absecon barracks said.
After swimming for about 10 minutes, Jones called to his companions for help, shouting that he had cramps. He was pulled aboard their hired motorboat, where the men applied artificial respiration.
State police said he failed to respond and declared Jones died of accidental drowning. He is a brother of Camden patrolman Arthur Jones.
Woman Held for Jury After Fatal Stabbing

Declaring she was “just playing with a knife” when Rudolph Spicer, 28, colored, of 146 Walnut street, was stabbed to death Sunday night in her home, Mrs. Emma Pollard, 32, of 1065 Ivins street, was held without bail for the grand jury yesterday on a murder charge.
Police Judge Garfield Pancoast also held without bail, as a material witness, William Epps, 44, colored, of 203 Pine street, at the request of Detective Edward Mills. Mills said Epps was present when Spicer was stabbed in the chest.
Vice Squad Raids Nine Disorderly Houses

Starting at midnight Saturday the vice squad and other police raided nine alleged colored disorderly houses in South Camden.
The biggest raid was made at the home of Walter Edgerton, colored, 1068 Ivins street. Edgerton, a former prize fighter known many years ago as the “Kentucky Rosebud,” was held in $500 bail as the proprietor of the place. Twelve men, all said to have been rolling dice, were arrested. Several of the players had scrambled for doors and windows, but nobody escaped.
Others whose places were raided and who were held in $500 bail each as principals are Ruth Smith, 714 Locust street; Unity Hall, 318 Joint alley; Addie Johnson, 213 Pine street; Mamie Booker, 703 Baxter street; Miriam Robinson, 312 Division street; John and Mary Walker, 1133 South Second street; June Loftus, 822 Locust street, and Ethel Davis, 821 Locust street. All are colored.
