Pershing Street runs north to south west of Norris Street. It lies in two sections, interrupted by the railroad tracks now used by the PATCO high speed line. The northern section runs from Lansdowne Avenue to Crestmont Avenue. The southern section runs from Thurman Street to Sayrs Avenue.
Pershing Street was originally known as German Street. When America became involved in World War I the Federal government ramped up a virulent anti-German propaganda campaign, and German Street was renamed Pershing Street, honoring the United States’ commanding officer in France, General John J. Pershing.

MRS. KOBUS ENLISTS TWO NEW FIREMEN
The Camden Fire Department was increased yesterday when Commissioner Mary W. Kobus swore in two new members.
The men, taken from the Civil Service lists, are Edwin W. Judd, 1062 North Thirty-fifth street and Joseph A. Gforer, 1461 Pershing street. Judd’s standing on the lists was 84.07 and Gforer’s 83.25. The men will be assigned by Fire Chief John H. Lennox.

Purse Snatching on Lansdowne Avenue

Anna Whiteman, 16, 1606 Pershing Street, reported that two boys, about 15, snatched her purse containing $1 while she walked with a companion, Ada Hans, 16, of 1342 Lansdowne Avenue, on Lansdowne near Norris Street. She pursued the boys but was compelled to give up the chase when she slipped and fell.

My grandfather Michael Nardelli built and lived at 1826 Pershing and Browning Street from 1947–1978. He was known builder, many properties in Parkside and in the Whitman Park sections. He also built the house and garages across the street in which my grandmothers sister and her husband resided — Vito and Anna Balducci. A few houses up Browning Street lived my grandmothers brother Anthony Bonetto — also 1947–1980.
I lived there from my birth in ’69 to 1978, the property was incredible — my grandfather brought many plantings back from his native Bari, Italy. He arrived in Camden in 1919 and planted them on the property which included 3/4 of the entire block.
