Sheridan Street

Sheridan Street is named for American Civil War General Philip Sheridan. The street originally ran from Warsaw Street east across Mount Ephraim Avenue on a straight line roughly north-east towards Haddon Avenue, stopping at Davis Street, between Jackson and Van Hook Streets. The street was later extended eastward to South 10th Street.

For many years the old Camden Municipal Hospital stood at Sheridan and Davis Streets. Sheridan Street is for the most part residential, with a few corner business properties. In recent years perhaps the property that attracted the most attention was the bar on the southeast corner of Sheridan and Pershing Streets, known in the 1990s as the All Nations Lounge, which came to the attention of law enforcement authorities during the pursuit of the Washington, D.C. area sniper murderers, John Muhammad and Lee Malvo.

Paul B. Pinkston, Jr. of 1440 Sheridan Street and Thomas W. Trotter of 1185 Sheridan Street were recently promoted to Army Specialist Four.

Pinkston is serving as a tactical satellite and microwave systems operator with the 7th Signal Brigade, Karlsruhe, Germany. Trotter is a communication center operator specialist with the 52nd Signal Battalion, Valkingen, Germany.

The appointing orders for their promotions stated “… The Secretary of the Army has placed special trust and confidence in these soldiers’ patriotism, valor, fidelity and abilities.” The promotion was based upon these qualities and the demonstrated potential for increased responsibilities.

Pinkston, who entered the Army in September 1978, attended Camden County College, Blackwood. Trotter, a 1978 graduate of Camden High School, entered the Army in July 1978.

Two youths were arrested late last night on suspicion of stealing a radio when one of them was interrupted by detectives while attempting to sell it. Detectives Benjamin Simon, Clifford Del Rossi and Robert Ashenfelter became suspicious of a car parked at Norris and Sheridan Streets. The occupant, Stephen Stanziak, 19, of 1279 Sheridan Street, said he was waiting for a companion who was in the store of Michael Gucik, northeast corner of Norris and Sheridan Streets. The detectives entered the store and found Joseph Fiume, 16, of 1349 Van Hook Street, attempting to sell a radio to Gucik. The youths said it had been given to them by a man they did not know.

My fiancé has family that resided and had businesses in Camden and he spent a lot of time in Camden. His Uncle, Anthony, known as Uncle Ott, traded as Anthony Zadlo Plumbing & Heating and my fiancé apprenticed with him for a number of years working all over Camden.

Uncle Ott was born and raised on Mechanic Street a couple of doors from Joseph Sbar Heating Supply which is also long gone. Uncle Ott’s older brothers had a broom factory in Camden that was put out of business during WWII. We don’t know anything about it.

Uncle Ott and his wife resided at the corner of 10th and Atlantic Avenue. The property was bought by West Jersey Hospital when they expanded. They then moved to 1261 Sheridan Street and that property was previously owned by Andrew Jackson. Uncle Ott and Aunt Jenny remained at 1261 Sheridan until late ’70s or early ’80s. He also operated Anthony Zadlo Plumbing & Heating from there as well.

Uncle Ott’s favorite neighborhood bar was Lambert’s located at 9th Street and Atlantic. He was known by everyone in the Polish section of Camden.

Police Believe Hunt for Racket Headquarters Ended; 4 Are Arrested

A three-month search for “numbers” headquarters in Camden was believed ended today when detectives raided a florist shop at 1409 Mt. Ephraim avenue, seized seven adding machines, thousands of dollars worth of sales slips and arrested four men.

Joseph Klosterman, 34, of 1413 Mt. Ephraim Avenue, whom the police believe operated the “bank,” was included in a quartet arrested by a squad under command of Sergeant of Detectives Louis Shaw.

Responding to an anonymous tip that the numbers men were gathered in a rear room of the store, Shaw, together with Detectives Clarence Arthur, George Zeitz and John Kaighn, surrounded the place.

The others arrested in the raid gave their names as Charles Selanski, 23, of 1286 Sheridan Street; Leon Babrowski, 22, of 1209 Lansdowne Avenue, and Frank Gromacki, 27, of 1411 Mt. Ephraim Avenue. Several “pickup men,” who have been arrested while carrying money and numbers slips, according to Shaw, were linked with the ring. The principals, however, had managed to escape detection.

The flower shop, Shaw said, is operated by Joseph Haleski, and was used as a “blind” for the lottery racket. Klosterman was released last night in $1000 bail for a hearing today on a charge of operating a numbers lottery. The others were all released in $100 cash security as material witnesses.

Burglars who broke into two stores and a private home Thursday night got exactly $2.50, a radio, and some cigars for their trouble.

At the store of Basile Constantine, 402 Berkley Street, cigars valued at $1.50 were stolen by the intruders, who forced a rear shutter. Michael Kelly, of 11 South Fourth Street, reported his store was broken into and $2.50 in pennies stolen. Entrance was gained through a rear window. James Hayes, of 1287 Decatur Street, told the police his radio set was stolen by the thieves after they entered his house through a rear window.

Detectives Clarence Arthur and Clifford Carr are investigating.

Found guilty of stealing an automobile which has not yet been recovered, two Whitman Park men were given six months in the county jail by Police Judge Pancoast yesterday.

Identified by the owner of the machine who said he saw them drive away in it, Herbert Cox, 25, of 1247 Van Hook Street, and Charles Casale, 26, of 1351 Van Hook Street, were sentenced in spite of their denial of the theft. John Harwan, of 1311 Sheridan Street, the owner of the car, testified that Cox and Casale took his machine from Mt. Ephraim Avenue and Van Hook Street where it was parked in front of his soft drink establishment. He tried to jump on the running board, he said, but could not reach it. He called the police and ordered the men arrested.

Cox and Casale said they did not know anything about Harwan’s automobile. They were in a speakeasy drinking all night, they said, and left the place intoxicated. In answer to Judge Pancoast’s questions the men said they did not remember where the speakeasy was.

“A TIP O’ THE HELMET TO” … Fr. George Abbey and Fr. Denny Penn of Engine 7, and Fr. Jim Nash of Engine 8, for the successful rescue of a trapped and unconscious woman at “all hands-Box #5212,” transmitted at 2337 hours on 27 March, 1977 for a fire located at 1440 Sheridan Street. Hustle on the part of all units resulted in the saving a life and the quick confinement of fire. Fr. Denny Dowhy of Ladder Co. 2 was also responsible for saving the life of a man’s best friend. Units operating at all hands-5212 were Engine 7 and 8, Ladder Co. 2, and the 3rd Battalion under the command of B.C. John Letts. A job well done.
