Introduction
Albert Atger Stinger was a member of a family that has had a long and distinguished history in fire fighting, law enforcement, and other endeavors in Camden.
Albert A. Stinger was the grandson of Blanche Atger and John Stinger. Blanche Atger was born to Gaston and Honorine Atger in Manhattan on June 26, 1879. Her father had moved to Philadelphia by 1890. There she met John Stinger, who she married on March 5, 1900 in Philadelphia.
John and Blanche Stinger had 4 children: John Lawrence Stinger became a detective with the Camden Police Department; Norman Carey Stinger drove a bus for Public Service, the forerunner of today’s Transport of New Jersey; Dorothy Randolph; and Philip A. Stinger, who had a long career with the Camden Fire Department.
John Lawrence Stinger’s wife was named Agnes. Their son, Albert Atger Stinger, born in Camden on April 8, 1925, was named for his great-uncle, Albert Atger, who died while serving with the United States Army during World War I. Albert A. Stinger would in time follow his uncle Philip and become a Camden firefighter.
Albert Stinger was drafted into the United States Army on May 21, 1943 at Camden, New Jersey. After his World War II service he was a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard for a time in the late 1940s.
Albert Stinger was appointed to the Camden Fire Department on September 1, 1950. He was promoted to Captain on April 1, 1961, and to Battalion Chief on July 29, 1981. After over 31 years of gallant service to the City of Camden, Albert Stinger retired on December 1, 1981.
A resident of 630 North 34th Street in East Camden for many years, Albert A. Stinger moved to Villas in Cape May County, New Jersey after the residency restrictions on Camden firefighters was lifted. He died on July 7, 2005.

37 Camden Men Pass Tests for City Firemen
Thirty-seven candidates have passed the Civil Service test for fireman in the Camden City fire department. Thirty-two of those who qualified are former service men and three of them, disabled veterans, were placed at the top of the list under the preference given by law.
Joseph T. Hackett, of 158 Branch Village, is listed first, Owen D. Gale, 320 Marlton avenue, second and August L. Johnson, 916½ Chestnut street, third.
The salary on Jan. 1 will begin at $2400 and reach a maximum of $3160 after four years.

5 COPS, 4 FIREMEN, ALL WAR 2 VETS NAMED BY AARON
Replacements Listed For 8 on Pensions, One Resignation
Director of Public Safety Aaron this faternoon [sic] announced the appointment of five new patrolmen and four new firemen. All are War II veterans.
The police are:
James R. Styles, 27, of 3013 Essex street; William B. Reeves Jr., 24, of 431 Chestnut street; Louis E. Walls Jr., 29, of 777 Spruce street; Edward Fulton, 29, of 342 North Tenth street; and Joseph A. Snajkowski, 29, of 1334 Dayton street.
The firemen are:
August L. Johnson, 31, of 916½ Chestnut street; Owen D. Gale, 29, of 312 Marlton avenue; Albert A. Stinger, 25, of 47 North Twenty-fifth street; and Jestroe Hunt, 29, of 753 Walnut street.
All the men will receive $2400 a year and will report for duty September 1. The new firemen will replace four men who have been retired on pension. Four of the new patrolmen will replace men who have been retired on pension, and the fifth replaces a member of the department who has resigned to accept another position.

NINE SAFETY AIDES SWORN BY AARON
Five recently-appointed policemen and four firemen were sworn in today by Public Safety Commissioner Aaron in his City Hall office.
The nine men, all veterans of War II, will report for duty in the $2400-a-year posts on Sept. 1. Four of the rookie policemen replace men retired on pension and the fifth fills the job of a department member who resigned to take another position. All four new firemen replace pensioners.

Stinger, Albert Atger
Age 80, on July 7, 2005, at Shore Memorial Hospital, Somers Point, NJ. A native of Camden, NJ, he lived in Villas, NJ for the past 25 years.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Okinawa. He was in the National Guard in Pa. after leaving the army in 1943.
Albert was a retired Battalion Chief, Fire Department, City of Camden.
Albert was the beloved husband of Olive (nee Galo) Stinger. He is survived by daughter, Lisa Helgenberg of Vermont, daughter, Andrea Stinger, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by four grandsons: Albert Helgenberg of Idaho, Sebastian Rizzon, Massachusetts, Jason Stinger of NJ, Zack Bellucci, Pennsylvania, and sister, Lauraine Stratton, Oaklyn, NJ.
Albert was an avid hunter and fisherman. He belonged to the now defunct Cherry Hill Sportsman Club, past member of Square Circle Sportsman Club, and past member of the Pennsauken Fishing Club.
Albert will be laid to rest in the Cape May County Veterans Cemetery. There will not be any funeral service or viewing. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. Funeral arrangements under the direction of Evoy Funeral Home, Inc.
