A smoker was given by the colored citizens of the Seventh ward at the residence of Walter Brooks, 722 Mt. Vernon street, to perfect a working organization in the interest of Patrick Carr, who is a candidate for the Republican nomination for Freeholder. Talks were made by J. W. Randall, formerly of Baltimore; R. L. Patterson, Edward Kabansky, Edward Custis, Charles Moore, Patrick Carr and Charles Rupp. Carr was chairman of the meeting, which was an enthusiastic gathering.

2 Injured as Fire Hits Row Home

Two elderly South Camden residents suffered smoke inhalation in a fire which destroyed one row home and damaged two adjacent ones early yesterday, according to fire authorities.

Mrs. Effie Chinn, 80, and Clarence Robinson, 68, were rescued by firemen from the blaze at 722 Mt. Vernon St. at 4 a.m. Mrs. Chinn was detained at West Jersey Hospital, Northern Division, Camden, and Robinson, at Cooper Hospital, Camden, according to hospital authorities.

Firemen Robert Deford of No. 1 Rescue Squad was treated for cuts of the eyes at West Jersey Hospital, Northern Division, and transferred to Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, hospital authorities said.

Fire Marshal William Watkins said the fire apparently started in a rear second floor bedroom of the home occupied by Robert Thompson, 38, and spread to two other two-story frame homes at 720 and 724 Mt. Vernon St.

Fire officials said Mrs. Chinn saved herself by filling a bathtub with water and climbing in. The other homes sustained exterior, interior and smoke and water damage, Watkins said. No other injuries were reported.

Leg Lacerated by a Vicious Dog

Carl Scheck, a boy, of 805 Mt. Vernon street, while walking in front of his home yesterday afternoon was attacked by a white dog said to belong to a family named Yettnick, and his left leg was lacerated. The wound was dressed and cauterized by Dr. W. E. Miller, of Eighth and Mt. Vernon streets.

Efforts have been made to find the dog to kill it, but so far no trace of it has been found.

Fireman Hall Dies

Following an illness of three weeks with kidney trouble, Fred Hall, of 807 Mt. Vernon street, a fireman connected with the Sixth and Kaighn avenue house, died this morning. He had been complaining for a long time before taking to his bed, but his indisposition was not thought to be serious. Hall was a driver and was appointed about three years ago. He was very popular in South Camden and leaves a wife and two small children.

Shot in a Quarrel Over in Camden

Michael Burk Murdered, and Two Men in Custody.

The Police Hunting for Two Other Men Who Escaped.

Michael Burk, of 814 Mount Vernon street, Camden, was shot in the head during a quarrel at Eleventh and Cooper streets, in that city, at 10 o’clock last night.

He died in the Cooper Hospital at half-past twelve. Two men, one of whom is supposed to be the murderer, are in custody. The police are hunting for two other men, concerned in the affair, who escaped.

A Fatal Quarrel.

John Moore, who was an eye-witness of the tragedy, says his attention was attracted by loud talking in a group of five men at the corner of Eleventh and Cooper streets.

He heard threatening words and then there was a flash and a report and he saw one of the men fall to the ground.

He ran to the spot and one of the group shouted: “If he interferes kill him.”

Two of the men, he says, ran away, but the other two bent over the wounded man to see if he was badly hurt.

Policeman Bakeley, who had heard the shot, ran up. The men claimed the shooting was accidental. He rang for the patrol wagon, and the two men accompanied him and the wounded man to the hospital.

The surgeons found that a bullet had entered Burk’s head. He was brought into the hospital at half-past 10 and died two hours later without regaining consciousness.

Arrested at the Hospital.

The two men who had accompanied him to the hospital were placed under arrest and taken to the City Hall. They gave their names as Harry Johnson, 821 Division street, and Michael Creighton, of Van Buren street, above Seventh.

Johnson, when arrested, said: “If Burke [sic] dies I will tell all.”

In Johnson’s pocket a revolver was found with one chamber empty.

He refused to tell the names of his two companions.

Policemen were sent out in all directions to search for the two missing men.

It is said that the men had been drinking, and quarreled over a trivial matter.

823 Mount Vernon Street — Harry Pfeiffer, Farr & Bailey Oil Cloth Works, Philadelphia Inquirer July 12, 1905

Harry Pfeiffer, aged 33 years, of 823 Mt. Vernon street, Camden, was terribly scalded by the bursting of a steam pipe at the Farr & Bailey Oil Cloth Works yesterday. Pfeiffer was working near the pipe at the time. Enveloped in clouds of the scalding vapor the man was discovered by fellow-workmen as he writhed on the floor in agony. He was taken to the Cooper Hospital, where his body, arms and legs were found to be parboiled. His condition is serious.

Mrs. Josephine Stankowski-Kotinski, who resided for 53 years at 921 Mt. Vernon street, died Friday at the age of 84. Services will be held tomorrow, with a solemn requiem mass in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Tenth and Mechanic streets, at 9:30 a. m. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. John Skolski and Mrs. Francis Burnett, of Camden, a son, John Stankowski, of Leeds Point; 21 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Among the grandchildren are two nuns, Sister Mary Joan Pelagia, of Trenton, and Sister Mary Anna Rose, of Boston.

The deceased was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis, the Rosary Sodality and Order of the Sacred Heart.

Parson’s Son Was Shot

Received Bullet Wound While Calling On a Camden Girl

John Edward Temple, colored, 18 years old, son of Rev. John C. Temple, pastor of Wesley A. M. E. Church, is at his home with a bullet wound in his neck. Miss Emma Stout, aged 18 years, of 1003 Mt. Vernon street, is locked up in the city jail to await the result of his injuries. Both parties to the shooting declare it was accidental.

At the time of the shooting Temple was at the home of Miss Stout. As he was about to go Emma showed Temple a pistol which she said she purchased as a matter of protection. To his warning not to handle the weapon so carelessly the girl replied that she knew what she was doing. An instant later the weapon was discharged and Temple fell to the floor.

Policeman Cornog was attracted by the shot, and entering the house placed the girl under arrest.

Made Home in Garage—All That’s Left

A one-story cement garage at the rear of Broadway and Mt. Vernon street was home for George N. Lawrence, an aged man, until flames swept through the interior last Thursday. He cooked his own meals on a portable gasoline stove. The stove exploded. Lawrence received severe burns.

Footpad Attacks Woman in Camden

Victim Wounded in Brave Fight, But She Saves Her Pocketbook

Attacked by a highwayman, Mrs. Walenya Pasiewicz, 36 years old, of 1186 Mt. Vernon street, Camden, was taken to the Homeopathic Hospital, Camden, early yesterday suffering from a lacerated scalp and cuts of the hands and arms.

In reporting the holdup at the police headquarters, Mrs. Pasiewicz asserted that while she was walking near the Old Camden Cemetery, at Orchard and Mt. Vernon streets, on her way home from a shopping trip, she was stopped by a negro, who demanded her money. “Go away with you, I’ve got no money for loafers,” she said to the robber. He caught her by the arm. “I put up a fight with him,” she said, “and he cut me on the arms and hands. I screamed, and some people living up the street heard me. Mrs. Oplan came to my assistance, and the thief was frightened off before he got any of my money. He struck me on the head just before he ran away.”

The victim of the holdup was found in dazed condition by Mrs. Oplan, who resides at 1186 Mt. Vernon street. The injured woman was assisted to the hospital and then notified the police.

Night Prowlers Rob 3 Places in Camden

A restaurant, a home and a gasoline service station were robbed here early yesterday. Thieves also attempted to rob a hardware store, but were frightened off after making an entrance.

The restaurant is that of William Thomas, 1150 Mount Vernon street. Entrance was gained by forcing a side door and the robbery was discovered by William Moore, a special officer, who saw the door open. A radio and a quantity of cigars, valued in all at about $50, were taken.

A back door left unlocked enabled thieves to enter the home of William Ratener at 1325 Park boulevard. Four boxes of cigars and 15 cartons of cigarets were stolen.
