Chestnut Street is one of Camden’s “tree” streets. It runs east from the Delaware River to Haddon Avenue, where it becomes Park Boulevard. The street runs between Mount Vernon and Sycamore Street.

Missing Buttons Aid in Trapping Robber
Prisoner Admits Stealing From Store in Camden When Mute Evidence Is Presented
A blue shirt from which two buttons were missing was a link in a chain of evidence which forced William Weaver, aged 28 years, of 213 Chestnut street, Camden, to admit to Detective Brothers that he robbed the store of Sidney Cohen, Tenth and Mechanic streets, and later knocked Mrs. Cohen down. Weaver was given four months in jail.

Man’s Complaint Jails Wife
At the request of Edward Gerhard, of 218 Chestnut street, his wife, Mrs. Eva Gerhard, aged 34 years, was yesterday committed to jail by Recorder Stackhouse pending an examination as to her mental condition. The man asserted he has spent over $1000 during the past eight years in providing opium for the woman and when the Harrison Anti-Narcotic law became effective and she was unable to get the drug, the husband said she took to strong drink. Her actions have been such of late that he was impressed with her lack of mental balance. A sad feature of the case was that the woman had a golden haired little girl in her arms which tried to reach from the mother, in the prisoners’ dock, to the father. Gerhard later took the child home with him.

Mickey Blair Freed as Uncle Posts Bail
Mays Landing, June 9.—Mickey Blair, Camden boxer, today was released from the Atlantic county jail when his uncle, William Tenerelli, 296 Chestnut street, Camden, posted $5000 bail to assure his appearance before the grand jury on holdup charges. Blair’s two pals were unable to raise security.
Edward Martino, Camden lawyer, was granted an application for bail by Judge William H. Stanger yesterday.
Blair, whose real name is Michael Tenerelli; Thomas Bonalli and Charles Parisi have been detained without bail since their arrest on charges of holding up Mrs. Barbara Lehman in a rear room of her cigar store at 1209 Arctic avenue, May 28.

Fellow Workmen Found Shipyard Watchman Dead
Nathan Simpson, a watchman at the John H. Dialogue & Son ship yard, at Front and Mechanic streets, was found dead in an outhouse this morning.
Simpson was missing from his usual place when the works were opened this morning and a search was instituted, which resulted in finding him sitting in an upright position dead.
Coroner Litchfield was notified and gave a certificate of death from apoplexy.
Simpson was 60 years old and lived at 325 Chestnut street.

Horse Injured
A horse was cut about the nose and legs last night when struck by an automobile at Mt. Ephraim avenue and Morton street by an automobile.
John Spagnolo, 38, of 334 Chestnut street, driver of the horse, escaped injury. He told police he turned the horse into Morton street when the car driven by Walter Jackele, 1333 North Seventeenth street, Philadelphia, struck it.

Charged with beating his wife, Joseph Kronenwether, of 341 Chestnut street, was held in bail yesterday. Later his wife appeared before Justice Kauffman, and said her husband had hit her in the head with his dinner kettle. Kronenwether was then placed under $500 additional bail to keep the peace.

A sudden jolt of the train causing him to lose his balance while riding on the top of a loaded coal car, Thomas Hines, an Atlantic City Railroad train brakeman, plunged to his death under the wheels in the yard of the New York Shipbuilding Company in Camden. Hines was 23 years of age, lived at 445 Chestnut street, Camden, and is survived by a wife and two children.

Knocked down and run over by an automobile driven by Charles Dieser, of 1049 Kaighn avenue, seven-year-old Barney Skoli, of 1118 Chestnut street, died afterwards in the Homeopathic Hospital, Camden. His skull was fractured at the base and he is internally injured. Dieser told the police he was proceeding slowly up Haddon avenue when at Park Boulevard the lad darted out from the sidewalk directly in the path of the car. Dieser was held.

Twenty one men were captured in a raid on a house at 1173 Chestnut street late Monday night by Police Captain Stanley and officers. It was alleged a crap game was in progress. Charles Myers, alleged to have operated the game, was held in $500 bail for court. The others were held as witnesses.

A fireman was injured slightly last night when a two-alarm fire damaged the Penn Junk Shop at 1190 Chestnut street.
Hoseman Adam Meade, 41, of 1446 South Fourth Street, attached to Engine Company No. 3, suffered an injured ankle when a fence fell on it while he was fighting the blaze. He was taken to West Jersey Hospital where he was treated and released.
The fire, of undetermined origin, started in the single-story frame building owned by Chester Szalanski and had gained good headway in piles of papers and rags before firemen arrived.
The first alarm was turned in at 10:36 p. m. by Alice Saduski, 16, of 1169 Chestnut street, who ran across the snow-covered street in bare feet to pull the fire alarm box.
When Battalion Chief Charles Errickson arrived he ordered the second alarm turned in. No estimate of the loss could be obtained last night.

Joshua Hughes, 56, of 1191 Chestnut street, died Thursday at his home after illness of three months due to a heart ailment. He was employed by the MacAndrews and Forbes company.
He is survived by his widow, Effie, and three daughters, Mrs. Ellen Orchard and Miss Laura Hughes, of Camden, and Mrs. Isabel Morgan, of Woodlynne.
Funeral services will be held at 2.30 p. m. Monday at the home. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

An explosion of gasoline and flames following it damaged the stock of William Light, dealer in dry goods, notions and millinery, at 1215 Chestnut street, Camden, yesterday morning, causing a loss estimated at $2000. Light said he started to light the gas, when a bottle of cleaning fluid exploded. He called the fire department, which prevented the blaze from spreading to the building.

Nicholas W. Glatz, 42, of 1238 Chestnut St., Camden, died Saturday, July 11, 1970. He was the husband of Eleanor (nee Cossabone). Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Anastasia Snow; two sons, William and George; one granddaughter; and his mother, Mrs. Anastasia Glatz.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a. m. at St. Thomas Greek Orthodox Church, Cherry Hill, where burial will follow in the church cemetery.
