Twenty-Fifth Street

Twenty-Fifth Street begins in what was originally called the Pavonia section of what is now considered Cramer Hill and ends in East Camden at Carman Street. When it was first laid out, sometime prior to 1887, it was called Fulton Street, the renaming taking place sometime after the 1899 annexation of Stockton Township to Camden. The street begins at the Delaware River, where the Farragut Sportsman Association has its docks, and runs south, across River Road to the Pavonia railroad switching yard, then to Federal Street, then for one short block to Carman Street. Prior to World War II, there were several houseboats moored at the foot of North 25th Street.

As in all numbered streets in Camden, it is North 25th Street above Federal, and South 25th below.

Requiem high Mass for Mrs. Olga H. Rickenbach, 58, who died Thursday in her home, 1240 N. 25th Street, will be celebrated Tuesday at 9 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 28th Street and River Avenue. Friends will meet one hour earlier in the Gustav Roedel & Son Funeral Home, 804 N. 27th Street, where they may call Monday night.

Surviving are her husband, Warren; four sons, Warren Jr. of Woodlynne, William R. and Edward R. of Audubon Park, and Ralph H. of Camden; four daughters, Mrs. Jane O. Springer of Woodbury, Mrs. Anna Marie Settler of Camden, Mrs. Florence H. Gardiner of Willingboro, and Mrs. Linda R. Heibel of Camden; five brothers, two sisters, and 25 grandchildren.

Camden Courier-Post —

Harry Thieme, 34, of 1219 North Twenty-fifth street, was fined $25 and costs last night for driving with improper tags and $10 and costs for having no license, at a hearing before Recorder George E. Yost, in Pennsauken.

Thieme, arrested Wednesday night on Cove road, said the tags were for a car he formerly owned and that he could produce the bill of sale for the car he was driving.

The members of the German Maennerchor Society and the German-American Beneficial Society and the German Quartette Club, of Pavonia, are invited to attend. 5 Camden Police Granted Pensions

Laib, Kay, Guthrie, Smith and Till to Be Retired Next Month

Petitions for pensions were granted yesterday to five members of the Camden police department.

The retiring men are: Lieutenant Charles Laib, in charge of the traffic bureau; Sergeant Charles J. “Jeff”. Kay, City Detectives Theodore “Dory” Guthrie and Howard Smith, and Patrolman J. Oscar Till.

The retirements are to become effective Jan. 1, it was announced after a special meeting of the pension committee in city hall. Mrs. Louise F. Walsh, secretary of the board, presented the five applications.

Eventual retirement of Lieut. Laib has been rumored in the department for several months, but it was not until recently that the report was regarded seriously. It is understood that his associates as late as yesterday had requested him to remain on duty. He is recognized as one of the most competent officers in the department. Failing health, however, is said to have prompted the pension committee to approve his application.

Successor Not Named

No announcement as to Lieut. Laib’s successor was made by Acting Chief John W. Golden.

Lieutenant Laib was appointed to the police force January 12, 1912, by former Mayor Charles H. Ellis. He was promoted to sergeant in 1916 and became a lieutenant in 1929. He has been in charge of the traffic department for a year, succeeding Captain Charles L. Humes, who has been named inspector of personnel.

Laib is but 51 years of age and is one of the youngest men in the department to apply for pension. If his pension is approved he will receive a monthly salary of $102.08. His home is with his wife at 76 South Twenty-fourth street.

For many years, Laib has been conducting a “one-man” relief organization and is recognized by charitable organizations throughout the city for his generosity among the destitute.

Each Thanksgiving and Christmas, he personally collects funds for dinners for the children of the Sheltering Arms Home, Seventeenth street and River avenue, and has also been responsible for the home getting a daily supply of bread from a Camden bakery for several years.

Kay Served 38 Years

Sergeant Kay is a veteran member of the police department and has been an officer for 38 years. He is 72 and lives at 606 North Fourth street. He will receive $90.65 monthly. He has been on the sick list for several months, recovering from injuries received in an accident.

Detective Smith is 58 and lives at 933 Penn street. For several years he was loaned to the county as a detective and helped in solving a number of Camden county murders. He was recently returned to the police department and Detective Fiore Troncone turned over to the county in his place. He will receive $90.65 a month. He was appointed March 20, 1906.

Detective Guthrie served 19 years as a policeman and two as a fireman. He resides at 570 Chestnut street. He will receive $92.50 per month, the additional $2 being added because he will not have the usual two per cent deducted for the pension fund.

Patrolman Till, who is 56, resides at 1002 North Twenty-fifth street. He served 25 years as a policeman and two and one-half years as a fireman. He is attached to the Second district. Till will receive $83.60 monthly.

The members of the pension committee who passed on the applications is headed by Mayor Roy R. Stewart and includes, Newton W. Ash, fire department representative; William Michalk [sic], police department representative; John J. Robinson, citizen member, and Mrs. Walsh.

Retiring Fire Chief Edward R. MacDowell today handed over command of the city’s fire department to Acting Chief Edward V. Michalak.

Michalak announced there will be no immediate changes in the organization or operation of the department.

MacDowell will hang up his chief’s hat today after 38 years and nine months of city fire service. The 64-year-old veteran joined Camden’s fire-fighting force April 1, 1926, and first served as a hose and chemical wagon driver for Engine Co. No. 3, 1813 Broadway.

Names Chief in 1959

Advancing through the ranks to junior captain, 1939; captain, 1943; battalion chief, 1949, and deputy chief, 1949, MacDowell was named acting chief following the retirement of former Chief William V. Pfefferle in October, 1958, and was made chief December, 1959.

During his career MacDowell also served as chief instructor in courses offered to Camden career firemen and to county volunteer firemen at Camden County Vocational and Technical High School, Pennsauken.

He numbers among the major achievements of his tenure the installation of radio equipment, improved fire training and better cooperation with fire units in surrounding areas.

Plans Trailer Travel

MacDowell, who has been granted a disability pension by the New Jersey Police and Firemen’s Consolidated Pension Fund, lives with his wife, Matilda, at 1308 S. Merrimac rd. They have three children, Edward R. Jr. and Wayne G., both of Pennsauken, and a daughter, Mrs. William Glading of Merchantville. MacDowell’s retirement plans include travel with a trailer caravan.

Michalak, 51, joined the department July 15, 1942. He rose to captain in 1951; district fire chief, 1959; deputy fire chief, 1961, and chief of staff, 1963. His father and grandfather were city employes and his son, Edward Jr., is a Camden policeman.

Michalak is president of Camden Firemen’s Credit Union and heads Camden Fire Officers Association. He is a member of several religious, civic and social organizations. He lives with his wife, Julia G., at 1040 N. 25th st. They have one other child, Barbara J.

Two Firefighters Hurt, 3 Homeless After Blaze

Two city firefighters were injured and three people left homeless early Wednesday when a two-alarm fire heavily damaged attached homes in the 1000 block of North 25th Street.

Camden City Chief Fire Marshal Herb Leary said the fire erupted about 4:05 a.m. in a basement lighting fixture of a home at 1006 North 25th Street occupied by a couple. Their names were not immediately available.

The fire spread through the home and into the home of an 82-year-old woman at 1008 North 25th Street. The woman, who was not immediately identified, was awakened by a smoke alarm in her home, Leary said.

All three people fled their burning homes before firefighters arrived. The American Red Cross was helping them to relocate, Leary said.

Firefighters fought the blaze until about 5:45 a.m. before declaring it under control. Two city firefighters, Capt. Duane Goobic and Firefighter Jim Ryan, were injured battling the blaze. Both were taken to Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center in Camden.

Goobic was treated for a cut on his lip and Ryan was treated for an ankle sprain. Both were released after treatment, Leary said.

While city firefighters were fighting the blaze, they also were called at about 4:30 a.m. to battle a fire in a vacant home in the 500 block of Pfeiffer Street.

Leary said someone had placed a 100-pound canister of propane gas in the home and set it ablaze. The tank burned but did not explode. The fire extensively damaged the home.

Mrs. Estella H. Beatty, 63, of 949 N. 25th st., died Sunday in West Jersey Hospital.

Surviving are a son, Willard E., at home; a sister, Mrs. Harry Sohl, of Plainsboro, and a brother, Henry F. Hellman, of Trenton.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p. m. in a funeral home at 1055 S. Clinton ave., Trenton, where friends may call Tuesday night. Burial will be in Colonial Memorial Park, Trenton.

Move or Go to Jail, Man Told by Court

An East Camden man was given one day to vacate the house he now occupies or go to jail. The moving order was issued yesterday by Police Judge Pancoast to William J. Cassidy, 918 North Twenty-fifth Street, when he was arraigned upon complaint of Harold Hartman, representative of Carl Evered Company, 450 Broadway, real estate firm.

Hartman said the man had been evicted on April 27 and his furniture removed to the street by officers of the district court. When the officers left, Hartman said, Cassidy moved his furniture back into the house. Cassidy said he returned to the house when the court officials said it would be all right to do so.

It was decided yesterday to have the double funeral of Lawrence Hand, 25 years old, of 116 North Twenty-fifth street, Camden, and his wife tomorrow and the bodies are to rest in one grave. Hand killed his wife at Lavalette, on the coast in Ocean county, last Friday, after he is alleged to have found that the woman had been receiving the attentions of another man. It was stated yesterday that he remarked when he left Camden for the seaside resort that he might not return alive.

The interment will be made at Camden, new cemtery [sic] in charge of Undertaken [sic] Crawford, who drove all the way to the coast after the bodies. Destroyed by fire March 24, 1988.

The funeral of Richard J. Grimes, former city fireman, who died Sunday of pneumonia, will be held tomorrow, with high mass at 9 a. m. at St. Joseph’s Church. Grimes, who was 41, resided at 111 North Twenty-fifth street. He was a member of the 114th Infantry and of the Firemen’s Benevolent Association. He is survived by his father, Daniel J. Grimes, and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Bates and Mrs. Rose Wurst, both of Camden. His father is a city fireman.

SUICIDE OF WOMAN LAID TO ILL HEALTH

Mrs. Rose Balint Dies As Husband Returns Home From Hospital

Suffering from what she believed was an incurable nervous disease, Mrs. Rose Balint, 54, turned on the gas in the kitchen of her home at 106 North Twenty-fifth street, while her husband, Georgely, 60, was returning from a hospital for Thanksgiving.

The unconscious woman was found by the father and a son, Fred, 22, after forcing an entrance. The First Aid crew from Fire Headquarters were summoned and after working on the inert form for an hour and a half sent for Coroner Harry Leonard. He declared death due to suicide.

The son, Fred, said his mother was in good spirits when he left home shortly after 10 o’clock this morning to fetch his father from Geans Cancer Hospital, Fox Chase, Pa., where he had been a patient for some time.

Find Note on Door

When the two reached the front door they found pinned to it a note. The note said:

“Nobody home. Gone to Philadelphia.”

A similar note was found on the rear door.

The son became suspicious and forced an entrance. He found the unconscious form in a chair in front of the kitchen stove. All the gas jets were open and cracks surrounding the door to the living room had been stuffed with clothing and rugs.

Complained of Sickness

Two notes were found in the kitchen. Their contents were identical, although one was written in Hungarian; the other in English. They said:

“Forgive me for everything. I can’t stand it any longer. My sickness is very bad. Do the best you can. Thanks for everything. Please keep together and look out for your health. Don’t worry. Comfort your father and have him make the will so you won’t have any trouble. Better me end it. Plenty of suffering in hospital.”

The son called the police department and patrolmen responded. They in turn summoned the first aid crew. Detective Edwin Mills also was dispatched to the home.

First Aid Crew Called

Six men on the first aid crew under Chief Walter Mertz and Captains Van Pfeffly and Robert Wonsetter administered artificial respiration from 1.10 to 2.35, when the coroner was sent for.

Mills said Mrs. Balint had been under treatment with Dr. Thomas K. Lewis, of 47 South Twenty-seventh street. The detective also reported that shortly after the son, Fred, left the house, the woman told a daughter, Mrs. Anna Coides, 30, of 1668 Springfield avenue, Pennsauken township, who was visiting her mother, to return home and prepare her own Thanksgiving. The daughter did so, not thinking the request was unusual.

Four other children survive. They are Isabelle, 22; George, Eugene, and Mrs. Rose Pfeffer, 26, the latter of 1467 Pershing street.

The home of George Fisher, 1529 Federal street, was broken into by thieves yesterday, the intruders taking $15 in cash, three stickpins and a pair of gold cuff buttons.

Robert Reese, twenty years old, of 104 North Twenty-fifth street, recently paroled by Judge Bovie, in the Criminal Court where he was charged with petty larceny, was arrested yesterday on the accusation of Mrs. Mary J. Price, 2612 Federal street, who says her chickens were taken.

George W. Hollins, 70, a retired fireman living at 51 North Twenty-fifth street, died last night in Cooper Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Hollins entered the city fire department May 2, 1903 and retired Dec. 30, 1932. He was attached to Truck Co. No. 1, which formerly used the house at Fifth and Arch streets, now occupied by the police patrol unit. Mr. Hollins leaves his widow, Mrs. Grace Hollins.

Man Flies Over U.S. to Dying Daughter — Camden Courier-Post, June 6, 1932

After her father had won a race with death across the country by airplane to reach her side, Marjorie Ann McClelland, 6, succumbed to scarlet fever in Camden Municipal Hospital. She was buried privately Saturday in Wenonah Cemetery.

The girl died Tuesday, 24 hours before her grandmother, Mrs. Fanny P. Cranmer, passed away at her home, 45 North Twenty-fifth street.

Marjorie was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William G. McClelland, formerly of Camden and Pitman, now residing in Hollywood. Mrs. McClelland came East with her daughter to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Cranmer, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Arleigh P. Hess, Mullica Hill. Marjorie contracted scarlet fever during the visit.

When McClelland received word of his daughter’s condition he boarded a passenger airplane on the Pacific coast and crossed the country in 24 hours’ flying time. He arrived at his daughter’s bedside before she died.

McClelland has long been connected with the old Victor Talking Machine Co., and was sent to Hollywood a few years ago by the firm when talking pictures came into vogue.

Mrs. Cranmer died Wednesday after an illness of two weeks. She was 67 and a resident of Camden for 50 years. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. tomorrow and burial will be in Arlington Cemetery.

Mrs. Cranmer is survived by her husband, a Philadelphia commission merchant; three daughters, Mrs. Harry Benkert, Reba Cranmer and Mrs. McClelland; a son, Harry; five sisters and a brother. Her sisters are Mrs. George Paynter, Mrs. Oliver Craft, Philadelphia; Mrs. Edward Parrett, Laurel Springs; Mrs. Philip Leonard, Gibbsboro, and Mrs. Harry Whitmeyer, Collingswood. Her brother is Charles Bates, Camden.

Paul V. Gaffney, of this city, will serve as his brother’s best man. William A. Gaffney and Joseph A. Gaffney, also brothers of the bridegroom, will be ushers. Mrs. David Ayers will play the wedding march. The bride will be given in marriage by her father. Her gown is white satin and a tulle veil covers the long train. She will carry a prayer book marked with lilies of valley and gardenias.

Miss Rosemary V. Gaffney, sister of the bridegroom, will be the bride’s only attendant. She will wear a gown in pastel pink with turquoise blue accessories and a shoulder length veil will be arranged halo fashion. She will carry pink roses.

The mother of the bride has selected a black dress, with touches of gold, and black accessories. Her corsage will be of roses.

Following a reception at the bride’s home, the bridal couple will leave for a tour of the South. After March 1 they will be at home at the North Twenty-fifth street address.

The bride is a graduate of Gloucester High School and the bridegroom was graduated from Camden Catholic High School.

Boys on Roof Accused of Plot to Rob Store

Two 15-year-old boys were arrested last night on charges of breaking and entering and attempted larceny.

The boys, Fred Powell, of 1025 Carpenter Street, and john mccloskey, of 33 North Twenty-fifth street, were arrested by Policeman Everett Joslin and John Taylor on the roof of a shanty in the abandoned Humphrey Lumber yard, Point and Pearl Street, which is occupied by William L. Rice, of 206 York Street, as an ice cream and candy store. The boys had broken off a section of the roof and were about to enter the store, the police said. They will be arraigned today.

Larceny Try Charged to 2 Paroled Boys

Two 15-year-old boys on parole from the Camden County Detention Home were held by the police yesterday pending action by Mrs. Grace A. Riggins, superintendent of the home.

They are Fred Powell, 1025 Carpenter Street, and John McCloskey, 33 North Twenty-fifth street, who were arrested on charge of breaking and entering and attempted larceny by Patrolmen Everett Joslin and John Taylor Sunday. The policemen said the boys broke off a section of the roof of a store operated by William L. Rice at Point and Pearl Streets and were about to enter when arrested.

Gaffney–Birney Wedding

The marriage of Miss Virginia R. Birney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Birney, of 21 South Stinson Avenue, Gloucester, and, Francis J. Gaffney, of 26 North Twenty-fifth Street, this city, will take place in St. Joseph’s R. C. Church, Twenty-ninth and Westfield Avenue, on Saturday, February 19.

Community Tips Lead to Takedown of Camden Brothel

Office of the Camden County Prosecutor —

Camden County Prosecutor Mary Eva Colalillo, Camden County Police Chief Scott Thomson and Camden County Sheriff Chuck Billingham reported two men have been charged for promoting prostitution following a takedown at a brothel in Camden thanks to tips from the community.

Concerned residents alerted law enforcement to a possible house of prostitution operating at 127 North 25th Street in the city’s Dudley section. Detectives conducted several weeks of surveillance at the residence and executed a search warrant around 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Two suspects, Roberto Lemuz, 39, of Camden, and Esteban Alcemon, 39, of New York City, were taken into custody and charged with third-degree promoting prostitution. They were remanded to the Camden County Jail with bail set at $125,000 each. Both men are in the United States illegally and face deportation. Members of Homeland Security Investigations will be filing immigration detainers on both suspects.

Detectives also located two New York City women in their 40s who acknowledged being employed as prostitutes at the house. The women were not charged in this investigation. They were provided assistance and services from the Dreamcatcher Foundation, a nonprofit that helps victims of human trafficking and prostitution.

The search warrant was carried out by Camden County Prosecutor’s Office detectives from the Major Crimes Unit and Special Victims Unit as well as law enforcement officers from the Camden County Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations. The Camden County Sheriff’s Office SERT Team was called in to make entry to the residence and did so without incident.

Four people, including a 3-year-old boy, were wounded when a running gun battle erupted on a city street Friday.

All of the victims were reported in stable condition after the shootout, which occurred around 6 p.m. in the 900 block of North 25th Street.

Two victims were 16- and 18-year-old males, police said. The fourth was a 73-year-old man, whom neighbors described as a bystander.

Observers expressed shock at the daylight violence, which left the street littered with shell casings.

“Everybody’s terrified,” said Joselyn Hernandez of Cherry Hill, who was visiting her mother’s home near the shooting scene. She blamed the gunfire on drug dealers who operate on the block.

Police still were trying to piece together what happened late Friday. No arrests had been made by press time.

The child who was shot was being held by one of the victims, who was a family member, said police spokeswoman Teresa Sicard Archambeault. She said it was not immediately clear if the man was part of the melee. The family relationship was not known.

But Hernandez, who arrived shortly after the gunfight, said her mother witnessed a man shooting as he held the child.

Hernandez and other neighbors also said the older victim was a customer at a nearby restaurant.

Multiple shots were fired during the gunfight, which extended to 24th Street and River Road, said Archambeault.

Police said all the injured were taken to Cooper University Hospital. The victims’ names and the extent of their injuries were not released.

Hernandez said the block has “very good neighbors,” but noted it also has two abandoned houses that are used by drug dealers.

“A lot of these guys don’t even live in this block,” said Hernandez. “Now they’re turning against each other and trying to kill one another.”

Replacements Listed For 8 on Pensions, One Resignation

Director of Public Safety Aaron this faternoon [sic] announced the appointment of five new patrolmen and four new firemen. All are War II veterans.

The police are:

James R. Styles, 27, of 3013 Essex street; William B. Reeves Jr., 24, of 431 Chestnut street; Louis E. Walls Jr., 29, of 777 Spruce street; Edward Fulton, 29, of 342 North Tenth street; and Joseph A. Snajkowski, 29, of 1334 Dayton street.

The firemen are:

August L. Johnson, 31, of 916½ Chestnut street; Owen D. Gale, 29, of 312 Marlton avenue; Albert A. Stinger, 25, of 47 North Twenty-fifth street, and Jestroe Hunt, 29, of 753 Walnut street.

All the men will receive $2400 a year and will report for duty September 1. The new firemen will replace four men who have been retired on pension. Four of the new patrolmen will replace men who have been retired on pension, and the fifth replaces a member of the department who has resigned to accept another position.

Five recently-appointed policemen and four firemen were sworn in today by Public Safety Commissioner Aaron in his City Hall office.

The nine men, all veterans of War II, will report for duty in the $2400-a-year posts on Sept. 1. Four of the rookie policemen replace men retired on pension and the fifth fills the job of a department member who resigned to take another position. All four new firemen replace pensioners.

Six new members of the Camden Fire Department yesterday were sworn into office by City Clerk Odorisio at ceremonies in the office of Director of Public Safety Kauffman.

The men and one other, to be sworn in Dec. 7, complete the present list of eligibles for the fire department. Kauffman said he will request the Civil Service Commission to set dates for new examinations for fire candidates. The city now enrolls 176 men in the department.

The new members are Daniel J. Sheppard, 22, of 1340 Dayton st.; Joseph W. Convery, 27, of 157 Eutaw ave.; John R. Hertz, 23, of 2916 Congress rd.; Albert E. Cullum [sic] Jr., 28, of 2409 Howell st.; David W. Sanders, 31, of 821 Line st., and Albert Jones, 24, of 220 N. 11th st. The seventh man is Daniel O. Mulvey, 24, of 23 N. 25th st.

The men will be assigned to the fire training school for one month and for one week at a fire school at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.

priest, took over March 6, 1897 and remained till September, 1899. Father Hendricks came for about one week, until the coming of the Reverend Doctor Joseph Rathner, September 17, 1899.

In July of 1892, there arrived in little Saint Joseph’s parish a man who was destined to spend the next 28 years of his life here. A saintly, scholarly, humorous, and sympathetic priest, he became in truest sense a shepherd of his flock, knowing and watching over it, his people knowing and following his leadership. Though he has been gone from the east side for more than 13 years, the memory of Father Anthony C. Shuvlin’s wisdom, erudition, and overflowing charity is still fresh and strong. He was priest and nurse during the flu epidemic, quiet sustainer of the underfed and ill-clothed all during his pastorate, but especially during the post-war slump and the trying days of the stock market crash. Creed or color never influenced his judgment of a man, and when he left, his departure was lamented by people of all races and creeds who came within range of his ministry.

In October, 1915, the old church at 25th and Howell Streets was badly damaged by fire, and the contract for repairs was awarded to James W. Draper at a cost of $3,987.00. While the building was being renovated, Mass was said in the old theater at 24th and Federal Streets.

it. As we look back over a half a century, we see the parish to have grown from a handful of families to the great size of more than 2,600, or more than 10,000 souls. Seven hundred and five children attend our school, which is staffed by 18 Sisters of Saint Francis. The $15,000.00 plant at 25th and Howell Streets in 1893 has yielded to the spacious grounds and buildings at 29th and Westfield, worth more than $350,000.00. Through the consistent generosity of his parishioners the present pastor has been enabled to reduce the original debt by almost $200,000.00. It will not be long, let us hope, before the entire indebtedness is completely paid and further steps taken to care for the spiritual needs of our people in this rapidly growing section, fulfilling in ever more perfect ways the command of our Divine Master: “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you all days, even to the consummation of the world.”
