Introduction

Park Boulevard got its name from the parks (Red Hill, Forest Hill, and Farnham) which it originally skirted. It is one of the three main thoroughfares of the Parkside neighborhood, the others being Kaighn Avenue and Baird Boulevard. It begins at Haddon Avenue as a continuation of Chestnut Street, heading north before curving east more or less parallel to the Cooper River, crossing Baird Boulevard and Kaighn Avenue before coming to an end at Vesper Boulevard, which is the border of Harleigh Cemetery.
Park Boulevard landmarks include the Pearlye Building, Camden High School, Farnham Park, and Pomona Hall, the home of the Camden County Historical Society. More recent significant buildings include the Boys and Girls Club, built on the site where the Congregation Beth El Synagogue stood from the 1920s through the late 1990s, and the Faison Mews senior citizens apartments, which opened in 2006.

Following a long illness from a complication of ailments, Thomas D. Childrey, Sr., builder and, until May 1, head of the firm of T. D. Childrey & Son, sheet metal workers, died Monday night at his home, Haddon avenue and Park Boulevard, Camden. He was 61 years old and had been engaged in business in Camden for nearly thirty years.

After an illness of three weeks, Robert Baillie succumbed yesterday. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret E. I. Baillie, a son, Alexander, and a daughter, Jessie.

Trip to City Jail Ends Parkside Scrap

Charged with disturbing the peace, Mrs. Stella Wilkinson, 30, and Harry Mattison, 51, both of 1259 Park Boulevard, were arrested last night by Policeman Joseph Mardino.
At police headquarters each preferred slander charges against the other. Mardino was summoned when the couple's quarrel disturbed the neighbors.

Well-Known Liquor Dealer and Oldest Elk in Camden
Maurice Hertz, 90, former Camden liquor dealer and oldest member of the Camden Lodge of Elks, died today at his home, 1316 Park Boulevard, following a long illness.
A native of Germany, Mr. Hertz came to this country at the age of 14 and settled in Philadelphia. He moved to Camden and lived there for many years before settling in this city.
Mr. Hertz founded the Camden Bottling Co. He also opened a saloon in connection with the liquor business at Locust street and Kaighn Avenue. The building was a city landmark for many years.
Surviving are his widow, Winifred, a son, Max Hertz; a daughter, Laura Hertz Huff, of Camden. The Elks will hold a memorial service at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

The funeral of Miss Amelia Babnew, 1315 Park boulevard, who died yesterday, will be held at 2.30 p. m. Thursday at the Schroeder chapel, Broadway and Royden street. Burial will be in New Camden Cemetery. Miss Babnew was employed by the Congoleum-Nairn Company and lived at the home of a Nephew, Adolph Vautier. She is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Amanda McAllister, of Camden.

3 Camden Students Get Degrees at N. Y. U.
Three Camden residents, including two school teachers, were among the 4,000 students graduated from New York University yesterday at the 101st commencement exercises at Ohio Field, University Heights, New York.
The Camden students are Miss May Marchant, 422 Linden Street, teacher at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School, Bachelor of Science degree in School of Education, Bella Polivnick, 1449 Ormond Avenue, teacher in Camden High School, Bachelor of Science degree in School of Education, and Charles E. Hutchinson, 1353 Park Boulevard, Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, School of Engineering.
Postal Vet Retires In Camden July 31

A veteran of more than 47 years in the postal service, Elmer C. Hutchinson, of 1353 Park blvd., will retire on July 31 as assistant superintendent of mails, in charge of carriers.
Hutchinson has held that post since Oct. 1, 1935. He entered the service March 1, 1906, when he was appointed a substitute clerk. He became a regular clerk the same year, and was named foreman in 1915.
His government pension will begin Aug. 1.

George Shapiro Dies, Was Tavernkeeper

George Shapiro, 58, of 1357 Park blvd., died Wednesday in Jefferson Hospital, Philadelphia. He was the operator of a tavern at 402 Federal st. for many years. He was a member of Congregation Sons of Israel.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth; two daughters, Doris Fein of Gloucester City and Sheila Shapiro of Camden; three sons, Sylvester, Harvey and Steven of Camden; three brothers, Edward, William and Bernard of Camden; two sisters, Mrs. Lillian Kirshner of Camden, and Mrs. Dorothy Lyons of New York City, and four grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in a funeral home at 1401 Princess ave., Shiva will be observed at 1357 Park blvd. Burial will be in Crescent Burial Park, Pennsauken.

Services for Thomas P. Leach will be held Tuesday at 11 a. m. in the Murray Funeral Home, 408 Cooper st. The Rev. F. Cooper Nace, pastor of the First Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Locustwood Memorial Park. Friends may call tonight at the funeral home. Mr. Leach, who lived at 1360 Park blvd., died Friday in West Jersey Hospital.
Born in Philadelphia, he was a graduate of Girard College and lived in Camden 40 years. He was a member of the Patriotic Order of America, 52, Camden; Commandery Loyal Sons of America, 34, and was an honorary member of Hatch Circle GAR. Mr. Leach had been a quartermaster in the Naval Reserve.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Marian K. Randles Leach, and a sister, Mrs. Florence Dischert.

Girl Hit on Head Walking on Street

Miss Marcia Ruttenberg, 19, of 1457 Park blvd., was treated at Cooper Hospital for a head cut Sunday night after she was struck, she told police, by an assailant wielding a lug wrench.
The hospital said she was released after treatment in which four stitches were required. Ptl. Arthur Jones said she reported she was walking near Magnolia and Wildwood aves. about 11.40 p. m. when a man asked directions, then struck her with the wrench.
The assailant, described as a Negro in his early 20's and wearing a green jacket, fled when she screamed, she told Jones.

Woman Hurt in Crash

Mrs. Rose Paiano, 26, of 1522 Park Boulevard, was treated at Cooper Hospital yesterday for cuts of the right shoulder, suffered in an automobile collision at Seventh and Pine Streets. Her husband, Michael, 33, was driving, unhurt. Driver of the other car was Thomas Penn, 20, of 274 Walnut Street.

Tetrachloride Fumes Sicken 3 Firemen

Three firemen were sickened Friday night when they inhaled fumes from a mattress fire after a carbon tetrachloride fire extinguisher was used on the blaze by police.
Examined at West Jersey Hospital and released were Clarence Hawkins, 30, of 1570 Park blvd.; Howard Ways, 40, of 909 Spruce st., and William Warren, 43, of 1546 Ormand st. All three are hosemen with Engine Company 8.
According to District Chief Daniel Jiannetto, the mattress was burning in the home of Albert Harkless, 33, of 714 Walnut st. Jiannetto said police had used a tetrachloride fire extinguisher before arrival of firemen and that the dangerous fumes sickened the men when they entered the room to put out the fire. Jiannetto said the blaze was caused by a careless smoker.

Ames Held In Slaying In Camden

A 47-year-old Atlantic City man is being held without bail in Camden County jail today awaiting grand jury action on a murder charge. Municipal Judge George E. Stransky Jr. yesterday ordered
Anderson Ames of the 1900 block Huron Avenue held in connection with the June 11 fatal shooting of Rudolph Brown, 57, of 1975 Park Boulevard. Camden police say the shooting took place in the home of Herbert (Midnight) Johnson, 52, of the 200 block North 10th Street.
Brown died a few minutes after being admitted to Cooper Hospital with a chest wound. Ames, who police report was wounded in the head during the same incident, was released from that hospital's intensive care unit Monday.
Johnson, who has been released in $2,000 bail pending an August 1 hearing on charges of possessing lottery paraphernalia, was permitted to sign his own $1,000 bail bond for appearance before the grand jury as a material witness.
Police claim to have found more than 5,000 numbers slips while searching his home.
Ames appeared at yesterday's hearing in a wheel chair. Among witnesses who testified yesterday were Jesse A. Jones, 50, of the 1100 block Cooper Street, Leon Williams, 65; of Kentucky Avenue, Atlantic City, and Hugh Johnson, 34, of the 800 block Cherry Street. Williams was freed in $1,000 bail as a material witness.
Jimmie. L. Harrison, 31, of the 1900 block Norris Street and Leroy Butcher, 34, of the 5900 block Lansdowne Avenue, Philadelphia also are free in bail as material witnesses.
Neither Harrison nor Butcher was at yesterday's hearing the judge said he surmised they had not had sufficient notice to appear.
