Bailey Street
BAILEY STREET appears to be named for real estate developer William T. Bailey, who was responsible for building rows of homes between North 5th and North 6th Streets on State, Grant, Bailey and York Streets. He also appears to have been involved in developing other blocks in North Camden.

Four Persons Bitten by Dogs in Camden
Philadelphia Inquirer —
Three Children and Man Victims, One Canine Believed to Be Suffering From Rabies
Four persons fell victims to the fangs of dogs in Camden yesterday, in one instance it being believed the canine was suffering from rabies.
George Humphreys, aged 10 years, of 28 Morris street, was bitten on the wrist by a dog which he declares was mad. The wound was carefully treated at Cooper Hospital to prevent possible complications, although the boy had sufficient forethought to suck the wound directly after he was bitten. E. J. Gallaghan, aged 45 years, of 211 Bailey street, was bitten on the left hand while administering medicine to a pet canine, and Foreman Long, aged 11 years, of 23 Lincoln avenue, was nipped on the hand. These two were treated at Cooper Hospital.
While 10-year-old Thelma Payne, of 870 Fairview street, was running to meet her father a dog attacked her, biting her about the face and arm. She was taken to the Homeopathic Hospital.
New Collector Named
Some surprise was occasioned in Camden’s Democratic circles yesterday when it was announced that former Councilman Thomas Littlehales had been appointed a deputy internal revenue collector by Revenue Collector Iredell. When Isaac Moffett stepped out of office some months ago Mr. Littlehales’ name was mentioned as a possible successor, but George Hampton, of Bridgeton, was selected. Then there came a mixup, in which Hampton failed to get the proper confirmation and Iredell was given the plum. Mr. Littlehales is widely known throughout Camden and the appointment has given comparative satisfaction among the rank and file of the local Democracy.
Looked for Wife in Wrong Home
When a scuffling sound on the shed roof at the home of Mrs. Earl Richards, of 1012 Lawrence street, aroused her sleeping children yesterday they awakened in time to see a man climbing through the back window. Then he proceeded to light numerous matches, several of which dropped on the floor. Mrs. Richards was aroused by the cries of her children and when she found the prowler rambling about upstairs she summoned Policeman Deith, who placed the man under arrest. Before Recorder Stackhouse he gave the name of James Giberson and said he was trying to find the home of his wife, from whom he is separated. He was sentenced to a month in jail.
Mother and Daughter Burned
In the explosion of gas in a range at the home of Mrs. Rosie Ross, aged 38 years, of 354 Cherry street, she and her daughter, Helene, aged 7 years, were badly burned about the face and hands. Both were taken to Cooper Hospital. The woman was preparing a meal while her little daughter stood beside her. The range refused to ignite at the first application of the match and when another effort was made the explosion came. A blinding flash of flame enveloped mother and daughter.
Once Custodian, Now Inmate
For many years one of the custodians of the insane asylum at Blackwood, former Freeholder Patrick McNulty, of Gloucester City, was taken to that institution from Camden by Under Sheriff Newitt yesterday. McNulty, now old and feeble-minded, was committed to the asylum by Judge Boyle after being adjudged insane following the fatal shooting of his son, Thomas.

Father of 6 Jailed for Theft of Milk
Camden Courier-Post —
Declaring that he “cannot condone” stealing of milk from doorsteps, Police Judge Mariano sentenced William Buss, 49, of 633 Cedar street, to 10 days in jail.
Arrested Saturday by Patrolman George Hemphill on complaint of Francis Engstrom, 316 Bailey street, driver of a milk wagon, for stealing a bottle of milk from a house at 611 Cedar street, Buss said he stole the milk because he has six children, three of whom are young.
“With all the relief facilities in Camden, there is no necessity for stealing milk,” Judge Mariano told him. “Somebody has to pay for the milk you stole and perhaps the house from which you stole it needs that milk for a baby.”
Judge Mariano said he would arrange with the relief bureau to provide for Buss’ children while he is in jail.

Mrs. Kobus Names 3 Cops, 4 Firemen
Camden Courier-Post —
Son of Former Fire Captain Among Men Appointed to Police Force
Appointment for three policemen and four firemen, all of whom will report for duty today, was announced yesterday by Commissioner Mary W. Kobus, director of public safety.
The new policemen will be assigned to duty in company with older officers to gain experience. The new firefighters will be trained at the police fire school.
Edward D. Tatem, of 565 Mt. Vernon street, one of the new patrolmen, is a son of former Fire Captain William Tatem. Tatem is a graduate of Camden High School. Roland E. Comerford, of 2931 Cramer street, who also was appointed to the police force, is a son of Fireman William Comerford, chauffeur for Battalion Fire Chief Charles Erickson. Young Comerford is a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School.
The third new policeman is Joseph Hooven, of 918 North Nineteenth street. He is a Camden High graduate and also studied two years at Villanova College.
Those appointed firemen are Phillip H. Farrow, of 529 Newton avenue; John Gryckiewicz, of 810 North Front street, Thomas Winstanley, of 329 Bailey street, and Anthony Bretschneider, of 1621 Louis street.
Farrow and Gryckiewicz graduated from Woodrow Wilson and Gryckiewicz served a four year enlistment in the Navy. Bretschneider graduated from a Philadelphia high school and attended evening classes at Woodrow Wilson.
All appointments were made from a State Civil Service Commission list of eligibles. Commissioner Kobus has adopted a policy of appointing high school graduates to both the police and fire departments.

Camden Courier-Post —
Accused of fraud in connection with the sale of a vacuum cleaner, Leonard Hauser, 39, of 218 North Eighth Street, yesterday was arrested and held on $1000 bail for a hearing Monday in Camden police court.
Complaints against Hauser were Mrs. Mary Kirby, of 552 Bailey Street, and Frank Thompson, dealer in vacuum cleaners at Fifth and Cooper Streets.

Murphy and Pedigree To End Long Service With Camden Police
Camden Courier-Post —
Veterans at City Hall, Lauded by Superiors, Will Be Among 13 Cops and Firemen to Go on Pension Before First of Year
By William A. Gaffney
Sergeant Thomas J. Murphy, one of Camden’s best known and most efficient policemen, and Joseph “Si” Pedigree, police switchboard operator, are among the 13 members of the police and fire departments who have already retired from active duty on pension, or are to accept half-salary on retirement before the first of the year.
Nine men have turned in their “tools” within the past month and four other applications have been approved and will become effective in the next two months. Two other vacancies left by the deaths of Deputy Chief William W. Patterson and Policeman Fred Schaar, will make the entire number of the two departments 15 men less on January 1, 1933. None of the vacancies will be filled, according to Mayor Roy R. Stewart.
Although the actual reasons for the large number of men retiring is not known, it is reported through the police and fire departments that the men are anxious to have their applications approved before a rumored 5 percent pay cut is ordered.
Murphy Praised
Sergeant Murphy’s pension will become effective December 30. Both Acting Chief of Police John W. Golden and Captain Arthur Colsey, chief clerk of the police department, expressed regret at the veteran officer’s decision.
“Sergeant Murphy is one of the most efficient officers we have ever had in the police department,” the two officials said. “He is well-versed in the law and for many years has handled his position as desk sergeant at police headquarters with unerring judgment.”
He is 65 years old and resides at 545 Vine street. He was appointed on August 13, 1902. His son, Thomas J. Murphy, Jr., is also a policeman and is now covering the “beat” his father “worked” years ago.
Pedigree entered the city service as a fireman in 1900 and served in that department. He is also 65 and lives at 49 South Twenty-seventh street. He has worked on Sergeant Murphy’s shift as operator for the past 10 years.
Chief Pensioned
The pensioners’ list is headed by Thomas J. Nichols, chief of the fire department, whose application to retire will become effective on Dec. 1. He was appointed a fireman on Dec. 1, 1900, and will receive $163.30 each month.
Capt. Daniel W. Leach, also of the fire department, was pensioned on Sept. 15 at a monthly salary of $93.10. He is 68 and lives at 624 Bailey street. He was appointed Jan. 1, 1908.
Enginemen Harry V. Hankins and James McDermott also recently accepted pensions and will receive $83.30 each month. Hankins is 56 and lives at 424 Taylor avenue. He was appointed Jan. 1, 1908. McDermott is 64 and lives at 23 North Twenty-eighth street. He was appointed in 1906. Both men left the fire department Oct. 1.
Fireman Joseph T. Johnson, 60, of 1433 South Tenth street, who was appointed March 1, 1900, will retire on Dec. 1 at $83.30 a month.
Horner to Retire
Sergeant William C. Horner, of the police department, a member for 33 years, tops the list of veterans to bid adieu to the trials and troubles of a policeman. He will receive $90.65 a month.
Horner is well known in East Camden. He has worked nearly all of his 33 years as an officer in the third district and commanded that section for several years. He recently was made desk-sergeant at police headquarters and decided to “take the pension” after spending several months “booking” prisoners. He is 6[?] and lives at 2129 Forty-third street. His pension was granted and made effective Sept. 15.
Policeman Harry Bakely, 60, of 918 State street, a policeman for 24 years; Irving Varley, 56, of 1703 South Fourth street, a policeman for 25 years, and James M. Ellis, 52, of 776 Walnut street, a fireman for four years and a policeman for 17, all have accepted pensions effective Oct. 1.
Policemen William Bryant, 51, of 228 Cedar avenue, Woodlynne, and Samuel Hibbert, 55, of 730 Market street, will cease their official duties on Dec. 1 and Dec. 31, respectively. Bryant was appointed Jan. 1, 1908, and Hibbert July 10, 1911. All of the policemen retiring will receive $83.30 a month.
May Not Be Replaced
When asked if the men leaving the service would be replaced, Mayor Stewart said they would not.
“I don’t know what I will do later on,” the mayor said, “but as far as I know now, these men’s places in the police and fire departments will not be filled.
“I feel that under present conditions, the men now policing the city can do it almost as efficiently as with the added number, that is if we do not have any outbreaks of crime.
“Chief Nicholas will be replaced by an acting chief whose salary will not be advanced.”
Year’s Hottest Day — 633 Bailey Street
Camden Courier-Post —
Year’s Hottest Day ‘Bakes’ City, Kills 2
Edward T. McAllister, Veteran at Esterbrook’s, Dies on Way Home
The hottest day of the year brought death to two persons in Camden and Philadelphia yesterday and caused general discomfort from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Coast. No relief is expected today, except possible showers.
Edward T. McAllister, 67, of 633 Bailey Street, collapsed late yesterday in an alley at the rear of 914 North Sixth Street. Neighbors called police who took him to Cooper Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Coroner Benjamin R. Denny said death was due to heart attack, induced by the heat.
Veteran at Esterbrook’s
McAllister was returning home from the Esterbrook Pen Company plant where he was employed 20 years. He was in ill health recently. His widow, Lottie, survives. Funeral services will be held at 2.30 p.m. tomorrow at the Denny funeral home, 736 Market Street. Burial will be in Arlington cemetery.
The Philadelphia victim was William Barchmaier, 42, of 4059 Teesdale Street, who collapsed at Keystone and Cottman Streets, Tacony. He was pronounced dead at Frankford Hospital.
92 at 4.30 P.M.
The mercury reached a high of 92 degrees at 4.30 p.m., two degrees below the record for the date set in 1914. The hourly temperatures follow:
| 9 a.m. | 73 | 4 p.m. | 91 |
| 10 a.m. | 77 | 4:30 p.m. | 92 |

The weather bureau does not hold out much hope for a change today. Continued warm weather, with possible thundershowers in the afternoon is forecast.
617 Bailey Street — The Vansant Family Memory
I’m sending some information regarding 617 Bailey Street. It is where my mother spent the first 10 to 12 years of her life. My mother was born May 29, 1913, and moved from Camden to Upper Darby, PA, in the 1920’s.
Following their marriage and spending their honeymoon in Mount Holly, my grandfather, Francis (a.k.a. Frank) Vansant, his wife Elva Armentrout Vansant, and my mother, Margaret A. Vansant resided at 617 Bailey Street until 1927.
During the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s our family made myriad trips across the bridge on our way to Smithfield (the one near Mount Holly) to stay in a cabin on the Rancocoas Creek that my grandfather and his lumberyard staff built. You can imagine how many times I heard about where my mother had lived as we entered Camden.
Frank owned a lumber yard in Philadelphia, Magargal Vansant Lumber & Millwork, at 2nd and Montrose Street, Philadelphia. It was a convenient commute from Camden to his business near the PA end of the Delaware Memorial Bridge. He also owned a lumbering property in West Virginia, where he met his wife. When Philadelphia bought his business to build a high-rise, low income housing unit, he set up his foreman in a new lumberyard in Glenolden, PA, and retired. Until the day he died in his late 80’s, he went to an office that was made for him in the Glenolden business. I think everybody loved him! Though he was slightly over five feet tall, he had much respect.
In the 1880’s his father, Richard P. Vansant, owned the lumberyard and lived in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia. Richard was also a sea captain who transported mahogany from his lumber yard in Columbia, South America, to his Philadelphia business.
Vansant family photos: Margaret A. Vansant at three months and Francis Vansant at 31 years; Elva, Margaret A., and Francis Vansant. Francis “Frank” and Elva Armentrout Vansant lived at 617 Bailey Street from 1912 to 1927.
During my mother’s later years she identified people and places in her photo album of her childhood years. It began with her proud parents and her in the Camden neighborhood and identified some of the neighbors with whom they had become friendly. One neighbor had the last name of Woods and worked at the Scott Paper Company in Essington, PA. One photo of my mother in a baby carriage was taken at Pyne Poynt Park, which was behind their home in Camden.
Judging by the photos after the 2007 fire, I doubt there are any parts of 617 remaining today.
Margaret A. Vansant and Francis Vansant (1882–1965) at 617 Bailey Street. After the Vansants, 617 Bailey Street was home to Josiah W. and Harriet L. Bonham and their family from 1928 to 1960. Carroll Evangeline Bonham married Marion Wildeson; Bon-Wil Refrigeration operated from the address (1947–1955).

617–619 Bailey Street — December 13, 2007
Story and photographs by Bob Bartosz
Camden NJ Fire Fighters Battle Smoky 2-Alarm Blaze
Shortly after 1:00 PM on December 13, 2007 a police car on patrol spotted heavy smoke coming from a row of vacant dwellings in the 600 block of Bailey Street in the North Camden section of the city. At the same time Camden County Fire Radio and Camden Police 911 Center were receiving calls for the same fire location. Companies were now dispatched along with Battalion 2 Chief Mike DiPascale. Fire Radio informed Battalion 2 that they were receiving numerous calls and were adding the extra Engine Company to the Box.
Engine Company 6, under the Command of Captain Sandrock was first on location and reported that he had a row of two story vacant dwellings with the first two dwellings heavily involved and that he was going in service. Battalion 2 was now on location and informed Fire Radio to strike an All Hands Box and requested an additional Engine and Ladder Company to be dispatched.
It was a rainy, misty day and the smoke was so heavy that fire fighters had a hard time trying to see up the street to where the fire was located. All of the dwellings were heavily boarded up, making it extremely hard for the fire fighters to make entry. Truck Companies went up to the roof to ventilate. Six 1-3/4” lines were now in service as fire fighters were making good progress attacking the fire. They were able to contain the blaze to two dwellings with some damage to the third dwelling. About 40 minutes into the fire Chief DiPascale placed the fire Under Control. The fire is being investigated by the Camden City Fire Marshal’s Office and the Camden Police Department Arson Squad.
Members of Engine Company 6, commanded by Captain Sandrock, going into 617 Bailey Street; members of Ladder Company 3 in the command of Captain Andy Magee heading to the roof to ventilate; members of Ladder Company 1 led by Captain Merklein and Rescue Company 1 under Captain Glassman making entry into the heavily boarded-up dwellings. 9 Nabbed in Check on Reckless Driving — 716 Bailey Street
Camden Courier-Post —
State Agents Warn Patrons of Cafes, Patrol Road at Early Hour
A three-hour drive conducted by State motor vehicle inspectors against reckless driving on Crescent Boulevard between West Collingswood and Brooklawn early yesterday netted nine arrests.
The drive also included cursory inspection of patrons leaving cafes and inns at the 2 o’clock closing hour. Many drivers accepted the advice of inspectors to permit other licensed drivers to take them home.
Justice of the Peace Oliver J. Stetser, of Gloucester, was summoned from bed to arraign the nine men, all of whom had been arrested between 1 and 4 a.m. Several drivers were examined by Dr. George M. Adams, of Gloucester, but none was pronounced intoxicated or unfit to drive.
Those fined by Stetser were Joseph T. Pfisterer, 24, of 53 North Johnson Boulevard, Gloucester, driving on rim of wheel, $50; Henry Geiger, 23, Mantua; Henry V. Marsh, 823 Tatum Street, Woodbury, $15, speeding; Myers B. Fisher, 25, Westville, and Aloysius Elliott, 31, 419 Hunter Street, Gloucester, $10 each, speeding; Edward Corbett, 24, 724 Federal Street, Camden, improper registration; George Dunner, 25, Lake Tract, Woodbury; Alphonse Besogni, Westville Grove, and Anna M. Unger, 25, 716 Bailey Street, Camden, $10 each, no drivers’ licenses.
Some Memories of the 800 Block of Bailey Street
My family lived at 830 Bailey St from 1953 (I was 8 yrs old and in the third grade at Read Elementary School) until 1968. My parents were Herbert and Helen Sampson and have 6 daughters: Anne (me), Helen, Stella, Carol, Michelle and Mary. My father drove oil rigs for Matlack Trucking which was later bought out by Hess Oil. After my family left 830 Bailey a Hispanic person bought it.
My Father (upright Bass), Al Bush (drums), Al Davidson (guitar) and Ed Bowles (guitar and piano) had a band and they would set up on our porch at Christmas and play music for the neighbors and everyone drank and had a good time. My dad and other guys, Calvin and Carlton “Cush” Krause, David Gladney would get together and set up block parties with beer kegs and music. One time the adults on the block gathered with their lawn chairs up on the corner of 9th and Bailey and one of the kids on the block called the cops reporting a bunch of kids partying on the corner. The cops came and saw all the adults and left.
Another time the young guys on the block lifted Robert Morris’s Volkswagen onto his porch and when Robert opened his door to go to work or school, his car was there.
When the great north eastern blackout happened everyone on the block was watching the first showing of Outer Limits on TV. It just said “We control your TV” and all the lights went out. The Krause’s and us and others on the block ran out on our porches and freaked out.
I remember the man going down the back alley way yelling “Clothes props, come and buy your clothes props.”
The kids on the block played in the alley ways a lot and on Pyne Poynt by the river. On Halloween we soaped windows and rang doorbells and ran. On Christmas Eve I remember walking down York Street in the snow to go to midnight mass at Holy Name Catholic Church and on the way there was a little shop that was all lit up for Christmas.
Next door to us 832 Bailey were the Krause family, Calvin, Mary (she worked for Sears) and their children Calvin Jr., Maryann, Paul, Billie, Joseph and Stephen. On the other side of us was David and Ruth Gladney and son. He played piano by ear and he and my dad always played jokes on each other. Next to Mr. Gladney was the Murphy family, Mr & Mrs. Murphy and their children Joe (who died a young man in a car accident), Agnes, Margaret, Donna and Louise. Margaret lives at the shore somewhere with I think her 5 children.
At 834 Bailey lived Carlton Krause and wife with son Robert lived next door to Calvin. Carlton Krause had a son named Carlton Jr. and a son named Phillip. My sister told me that Robert Krause, Carlton Krause Jr., Margaret Murphy and Donna Murphy all live in Cape May, New Jersey. Louise Murphy lives in Delaware and Calvin Krause in Collingswood.
At 836 Bailey was Mr. & Mrs. Reibel and sons Danny and ?. 838 Bailey Street was Mr. & Mrs. Morris and son Robert. 846 Bailey had John and Lulu Reppert and son Jack, who married Agnes Murphy. 848 Bailey was the home of Mr. & Mrs. Burkhardt and sons Billy, Richard (married Linda Taylor from York Street), Robert and daughter Mary Ellen. 847 Bailey had Flexitallic Gasket Company at one end and the paper factory at the other.
818 Bailey: James J. Owens, his mother lived there and her Granddaughter Suzanne Owens would visit and we would play with her and she had so many toys we thought she was a rich girl. She lived in Pennsylvania. Suzanne’s parents were divorced. 824 Bailey Mrs. Beckett with her disabled brother Richard, and her son George. 812 Bailey was Mr. Shoemaker. 814 Bailey Mr. & Mrs. Baker and son ? and daughter Margaret.

North Camden Wife Swindled — 816 Bailey Street
Camden Courier-Post —
By Man Offering Husband Job
Woman Borrows $5 From Neighbor and Gives It to Stranger; Fraud Revealed on Trip to Philadelphia City Hall
A North Camden woman was fleeced of $5 yesterday and left without funds to walk home from Philadelphia City Hall by a confidence man who promised her husband a job.
The victim is Mrs. Florence Downing, wife of Frank Downing, 816 Bailey Street.
She borrowed the $5 from a neighbor after the stranger offered to get Downing a job if he registered at Philadelphia City Hall as a solicitor.
Mrs. Downing said the stranger first asked her to advance a $12 registration fee, but later compromised for $5 and said he would obtain the balance from Downing’s first week’s salary.
Mrs. Downing accompanied the stranger by bus to Philadelphia when he said she might register for her husband. Near City Hall, he left the bus, telling her to go to Room 542 and ask for Mr. Sells.
“He said he would telephone and fix everything up for me,” she told police. The woman reported she found there was no Room 542 and no Mr. Sells.
Mrs. Downing said the swindler obtained her address through her husband’s father, George, 936 Cedar Street, after he approached George Downing and asked him where he could contact 20 young men who wanted to earn from $5 to $10 daily.
Bar patrons mourn murdered buddies
Camden Courier-Post —
By CAROL COMEGNO Of the Courier-Post
Police investigators are checking clues in the murders of John Barrett (left) and Benjamin Shablack, whose bodies were found last weekend in their burned North Camden home
CAMDEN — Regulars at The Tavern are still stopping by as always, but it hasn’t been business as usual the past few days.
The atmosphere at the North Sixth Street bar has been more subdued since Saturday, when many of the patrons learned that two long-time members of their drinking family had been murdered.
The patrons and tavern owner are so grieved and outraged over the loss of their beloved buddies — Benjamin Shablack and John Barrett — that they are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the culprits who bound and gagged the two retired roommates, set fire to their house in North Camden and left them to die.
Barrett, 66, was a retired city employee with the public works department who once was in charge of the now-defunct State Street dump. Shablack, 69, a former printer in Philadelphia, worked as a cleanup man at the tavern.
SINCE MONDAY, patrons at The Tavern — one of the last drinking spots where city oldtimers gather — have been putting dollar bills and change into a can covered with a sign reading, “For Benny and Eggy.”
“They were the most unforgettable characters. They were loved people, they were our friends, and we just don’t want this to get lost somewhere,” said Anthony Gresk, a former city policeman who owns The Tavern.
“Eggy (Barrett’s nickname) fought in Africa (in World War II) and was injured. In his life, he’s been through a lot — as has Bennie — and they didn’t deserve to die like that,” said Gresk, who later told some of Eggy’s more memorable jokes and imitated some of the mannerisms of his two favorite customers.
Former state Sen. Joseph Cowgill, another of the regular patrons, was helping Gresk count some of the proceeds Tuesday afternoon. One contributor dropped his day’s pay into the till; some customers parted with $50 bills for their slain comrades.
Friends described the pair as kind-hearted, street-wise men who were creatures of habit and who had been touched by crime before.
“THEY STILL wanted to live in North Camden even though it’s a really rough neighborhood now. Their hearts were there because they were raised there and had lived there all their lives,” said Rocky Donovan of Camden. “When I got a phone call about their deaths, it was like they were telling me one of my own family had died. We’re going to miss those guys.”
While police suspect the motive for the murders was robbery, policemen and friends of the dead men said the two had very little money.
“Whoever did this thought those guys had money, but they had nothin’. They got their Social Security checks the third of the month and also had small pensions. Bennie kept his money in a Bull Durham tobacco bag that was tied to a string around his neck and inside his shirt,” Donovan recalled.
Barrett once was known to bet on the horses and carry large sums of money, but city police and friends agreed this was no longer the case.
“The only gambling he did was going on errands for City Hall or tavern friends to buy them daily lottery tickets,” said another of his acquaintances.
A bartender at the grill said he gave Shablack $5 Friday morning because he was broke.
Christine Patterson of Woodlynne, Barrett’s niece, said her uncle had great family pride but was a loner.
“WHEN I’D see him, he would say he had been beaten or robbed at least once a year, but he seemed to laugh it off,” she said. “He had a great disposition and always wore a white shirt, hat and tie no matter where he went.”
Camden Detective Lt. Edward Michalak said Barrett was last seen leaving The Tavern about 8 p.m. Friday and that Shablack had gone home before dark, as was his habit.
The two were found in their underwear at 2 a.m. Saturday after police and firemen responded to a fire call at their two-story brick rowhouse at 834 Bailey St. in a predominantly Hispanic and black neighborhood. The houses on either side of their home are vacant.
Michalak said four city policemen and three investigators from the Camden County prosecutor’s office are working on the case and have interviewed more than 100 friends, relatives and neighbors, and street people.
“There are no new developments and we have no suspects at this point,” said Michalak. “We have not found any wallets and have not been able to establish if anything was taken.”
City Fire Marshal Harold Pike released a report Tuesday that concluded the fire was deliberately set in four locations inside the house — a first-floor closet in the front room and closets and a mattress in two of the three upstairs bedrooms. One of the bedrooms was ransacked, leading police to believe the initial motive was robbery.
PIKE SAID firemen found no sign of forced entry and did not find traces of flammable liquids, which often are used to set fires. “It appears that clothes in the closets and the mattress were set afire with a lighter or something else that could have been easily lit,” Pike said.
Autopsies showed both men died from smoke inhalation and that Barrett had bruises and was bleeding from the head because of a beating. Police, however, said the beating did not appear to be severe.
Shablack and Barrett were buried today.
Double murder shocks Camden
Camden Courier-Post —
By KEN SHUTTLEWORTH, Of the Courier-Post
CAMDEN — The murder of two elderly men, whose bodies were found bound and gagged in their two-story brick home early yesterday, has renewed calls by area residents for better police protection.
The victims, Benjamin Shablock and John Barrett, died of smoke inhalation in a deliberately set fire that broke out around 2 a.m. in the house the men shared at 834 Bailey St. in North Camden, homicide detectives said.
Shablock was believed to be in his late 60s, and Barrett was said to be near age 70.
Detective Sgt. Albert Handy said the two men were found in separate bedrooms on the second floor. He said police have no suspects and have not established a motive in the slayings.
HANDY SAID one of the bedrooms in the house appeared ransacked, but police could not tell whether anything had been stolen.
Residents of the predominantly Hispanic and black section remember their two white neighbors as quiet men who passed time sitting on the porch and working at odd jobs.
“They didn’t bother anybody,” said Eifonio Lopez, who lives a few doors away.
Several homes on the street are boarded up and abandoned, including the two on either side of the Barrett property. Lopez said one of Barrett’s former next-door neighbors moved away some time ago because of a number of break-ins.
A LONGTIME friend of Barrett, Councilwoman Helen McHugh, said he worked many years for the city’s Department of Public Works before retiring several years ago. She said he worked at the now-defunct city dump on State Street, a few blocks from his home. The councilwoman said he helped her with various political chores during his retirement.
Handy said that Shablock worked part-time as a cleaner at The Tavern on 6th Street, near Cooper, about two blocks from the house.
Samuel Benson, president of Concerned Citizens of North Camden, said word of the murders has sent shock waves through the community. His organization was formed about a year ago to improve the quality of life in the most rundown section of the economically depressed city.
As a result of the murders, Benson said he expects to renew efforts to pressure the police department into stepping up its protection commitment to the community.
DEMANDS FOR more officers have been relayed by the organization and others to Police Chief Harold Melleby but, so far, Benson says the response has been unsatisfactory.
Melleby could not be reached for comment, but in the past he has blamed union work rules requiring two-man patrols for a lack of citywide police coverage.
He has expressed confidence that a new agreement due to take effect later this year will enable the department to more adequately deal with the complaints by Benson and other citizens groups.
500 Block of Bailey Street (continued)
Drowning of Robert Allebach, 10, of 533 Bailey Street, spurred a petition for a river fence along the Delaware (CCR Feb. 20, 1950). Edward Butler, 44, of 535 Bailey Street, was found in the Delaware River in May 1967. George Smith of 540 Bailey Street and James O. Jones of 544 Bailey Street were both Camden firefighters. Harry Chew of 545 Bailey Street married Dorothy A. Campbell at Broomall, PA, October 18, 1935.

Harry F. Walton Dies from Wound
Camden Courier-Post —
Former Freeholder’s Death Pronounced Suicide; Ill Health Blamed
Former Freeholder Harry F. Walton, 52, died in Cooper Hospital last night from a self-inflicted bullet wound in the temple.
Walton shot himself at his home, 520 Bailey street, last Wednesday. Coroner Murray issued a certificate of death by suicide.
“He was melancholy over ill health,” Murray said.
Walton was the first president of the Pyne Poynt Social Club and was its treasurer at the time of his death. He was employed as a bookkeeper in the stock room of the New York Shipbuilding Corporation for nearly 25 years. Two weeks ago he suffered a nervous breakdown. He partially recovered and returned to work, relatives said. But he was again stricken.
Walton was alone in his home when he shot himself. He was unconscious when his sister, Irene M. Walton, found him. He never regained consciousness. Miss Walton found the gun beneath a radiator near his hand.
Walton became president of the social club when it was organized in 1911 at 939 North Fifth street. He served two years and became treasurer. He was custodian of the building and spent all of his leisure time there seeing to it that the younger members had a good time and maintained order.
The Pyne Poynt Athletic Association, of which he was financial secretary for years, met in the same building. His father, the late Franklin M. Walton, was one of the organizers of the athletic association 40 years ago.
Walton was elected in 1925 as Tenth ward freeholder and served three years. He was born in Philadelphia and when he was a boy his parents moved here. His mother, Mrs. Mary G. Walton, died six months ago. A brother, William, of 633 Pearl street, and his sister are the only other survivors.
Services will be held at 11 a. m., Wednesday at the funeral home of Joseph H. Murray and Son, 408 Cooper street. Burial will be in Harleigh Cemetery.
