Twenty-Eighth Street

Twenty-Eighth Street runs from the Delaware River south, across River Road to the Pavonia railroad switching yard, then to Westfield Avenue and on to Federal Street, then to Washington Street. As in all numbered streets in Camden, it is North 28th Street above Federal, and South 28th below.

Gas Stove Explosion Welcomes Pair Home

Fred Strahle, 32, his wife, Thelma, same age, and their two children were given a “warm” reception last night when they returned home from a vacation in the mountains of Pennsylvania.

The gas stove in their home at 1017 North Twenty-eighth street, blew up when Strahle attempted to light the pilot.

Mrs. Strahle screamed, ran for a telephone and called city firemen. Strahle did some quick thinking, yanked a small rug off the dining room floor and smothered the flames. Firemen arrived but did not go into action. Strahle said it appeared the pilot had sprung a leak.

Police yesterday were asked to search for a 15-year-old East Camden boy who left home Saturday to attend a baseball game and has not been heard of since.

The boy is William Rue, of 924 North Twenty-eighth street, described as five feet, four inches tall, blue eyes and light hair. When he left home the boy wore a blue suit and green shirt.

The death yesterday of Mrs. Elizabeth Evans, 68, of 924 N. 28th Street was ruled a suicide by Camden County Coroner Thomas Casey.

Casey said last night that the body of Mrs. Evans was found in the cellar of her home by her husband, William, 70, when he returned home from work at about 5:30 p.m.

The coroner said that Mrs. Evans hung herself from a pipe with a length of clothesline. He said the woman had been in ill health for some time and that a note was found near her body.

Camden Soldier Credited With Saving Child's Life in Germany

PFC Allen Rudderow, 920 North Twenty-eighth Street, is credited with saving the life of a two-year old Yugoslav child recently when he observed smoke pouring from a house in Pudolstadt, Germany, where a group of displaced persons had been quartered.

Rudderow, barred by fire from entrances to the house, climbed to the roof of an adjacent building and swung across to the burning dwelling. Seizing the child from a smoke-filled room he passed the baby across the area between the buildings to a waiting soldier.

Overcome by grief — A neighbor and fireman comfort Barbara Fustin, whose daughter was critically injured in a blaze at 906 N. 28th St. this morning. Another child was killed in the fire.

CAMDEN — A girl was killed and another critically injured this morning in an intense, smoky fire in a row home at 906 N. 28th St. in the Cramer Hill section of the city.

Valerie Kalyta, 6, was pronounced dead of burns and smoke inhalation on arrival at Cooper Hospital-University Medical Center.

Jennifer Fustin, 5, was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center and then transferred to the burn unit of St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. She was in critical condition this morning, suffering from severe smoke inhalation and third degree burns of her arms, legs and chest, covering about 25 percent of her body, hospital officials said.

Valerie was the daughter of a couple identified by neighbors as William and Donna Jennings. Jennifer is the daughter of Barbara Fustin, a friend of the Jennings, and had spent the night with them. Two other children escaped injury in the 6:38 a.m. blaze. Jeffery Jennings, believed to be about 10 years old, jumped from a second story bedroom window into the arms of neighbors Robert Wojciechowski, 36, and James Bates, 17.

CAMDEN (AP) — An early morning blaze that engulfed a rowhouse and killed seven people yesterday, including four young children, probably was caused by careless smoking, the Camden County prosecutor said. Six victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Camden County Prosecutor Samuel Asbell said evidence shows the fire began on the second floor, probably in a mattress from careless smoking. He said his investigation is continuing.

“We can only assume the exit ways were blocked — one of them by a burning mattress,” said Asbell, suggesting that one of the residents may have tried to drag the burning mattress downstairs.

A firefighter, Capt. William Young of Engine Company No. 9, was injured in the fire and taken to West Jersey Health System in Camden, where he was treated for smoke inhalation, authorities said.

“The crackling of the burning wood woke me up. The fire was right there, but I couldn’t get past it. I could hear the kids screaming. I could hear them but I couldn’t get to them,” said Duane Vautier, who lives two houses away from the house at 900 N. 28th St.

Bed Sheet Rips to Fail Attempt at Suicide

An 82-year-old man, despondent over advanced age, allegedly attempted suicide Saturday night. He was John Williams, of 860 North Twenty-eighth street.

Detective Sergeant Frank Crawford said Williams tied a bed sheet to a bureau in his bedroom on the second floor, climbed out of the window with the other end of the sheet tied about his neck, and dropped. The sheet was ripped and Williams fell to the ground.

Patrolman Everett Joslin and John Toal took him to Cooper Hospital where he was treated for cuts of the left eye and possible fractures of the left hip.

Charles E. Williams, his son, living at the same address, told police the aged man attempted to cut his throat a few weeks ago.

R. M. Hollingshead, Jr., Pays Fine as Speeder

R. M. Hollingshead, Jr., vice-president of the R. M. Hollingshead Company, Ninth and Market streets, was fined $15 and $2.50 costs last night at a traffic hearing before Police Recorder George E. Yost, of Pennsauken township.

Hollingshead was arrested last week by Officers George Kelly and Robert Jones charged with driving 75 miles an hour on the Burlington pike. He gave his address as 105 Midway, Riverton.

Gordon Snyder, 23, of 709 North 28th Street, arrested by Motor Vehicle Inspector Murray for having no driver’s license, was fined $5 and $2.50 costs. Henry J. Davis, Jr., 22, of 606 West Maple avenue, Merchantville, charged with driving 60 miles an hour on Route S-41 by Inspector Harry Pigott, was fined $5 and $2.50 costs. Roland E. Hill, 24, of 233 Atlantic avenue, Bridgeton, arrested by Murray for speeding on Crescent boulevard, was assessed $10 and $2.50 costs.

William L. Adams Sr., 61, of 553 North Twenty-eighth street, died yesterday in his home. He was born in South Camden and lived in East Camden nearly 40 years. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Joseph’s Church, Twenty-ninth street and Westfield avenue. For many years he was employed by the Standard Oil Co. and for the past two years had been a bartender at a tavern at Ninth and Market streets.

Surviving are his widow, Mary C., two sons, William L. Jr. and James J., both of Camden; five daughters, Mrs. Eleanor Irick, Fort Wayne, Ind., Mrs. Catherine Parvin, Camden, and Mary, Joan and Anne, of the home address; a brother, James, Camden; five sisters, Mrs. Clara McGovern, Haddon Heights; Mrs. Evelyn Sheer, Philadelphia; Mrs. Rose Kerns and Mrs. Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, both of Camden, and Mrs. Marie Morrison, Pennsgrove, and five grandchildren.

Solemn requiem Mass will be celebrated Monday at 9 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church. Relatives and friends will meet at 8 a.m. in the funeral home at 2850 Federal street, where friends may call tomorrow night. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.

Two Suspects Admit Having Robbed House

Admitting having robbed one house and making an attempt in another instance, George Laws, aged 19, of 2804 Mitchell street, and Edward Thomas, aged 22, of 413 North Twenty-eighth street, were yesterday held by Recorder Stackhouse in Camden pending further inquiry. They confessed to ripping the water pipe from a vacant house at Twenty-second and Howell streets and then going to the home of Frederick Voigt, 222 North Thirty-second street, where they were detected in the act by a neighbor of Voigt’s.

From a description given by the neighbor Policeman Palmer arrested the pair.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday for Mrs. Annie Morse, widow of the late Captain William Morse, who died Monday in her 88th year.

The services will be at the home of a son, Frederick Morse, 200 North Twenty-eighth Street. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery.

Mrs. Morse has been a resident of East Camden for more than 55 years and was widely known in the section. Besides her son, a grandchild and great-grandchild survive.

Frederick W. Morse, 77, an employe of the Camden Board of Education from 1919 until 1954, died Sunday in his home, 200 N. 28th st. where he had lived for 76 years. During the last three years he had been a building superintendent at the Park View Apartments, Collingswood. He was a member of Camden Lodge 15, FAM.

Surviving are his wife, Mary; a daughter, Mrs. Helen Keller, of Media, Pa.; a grandson and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 a. m. in the Gustav Roedel and Son Funeral Home, 804 N. 27th st., with the Rev. Werner Everbach, pastor of Christus Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Friends may call Wednesday evening. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery, Pennsauken.

Mrs. Anna E. McDermott, 80, wife of retired city fireman James H. McDermott, of 23 North Twenty-eighth street, died Tuesday after a long illness. Also surviving is one son, David, of Camden. Funeral services will be held at 9 a. m. Saturday at the Harry Leonard Funeral Home, 2850 Federal street. Solemn requiem mass will be celebrated at 10 a. m. at St. Joseph’s Church, Twenty-ninth street and Westfield avenue.

Policeman Joseph Sparks, city employe 17 years, died early Saturday at West Jersey Homeopathic Hospital where he had been ill three weeks. Death was due to spinal meningitis.

Sparks had been a junior captain in Fire Company No. 7, Mt. Ephraim and Kaighn avenues, for seven years, until 1918 when he became a patrolman.

He contracted pneumonia several weeks ago and was taken to the hospital from his home, 20 North Twenty-eighth street. The fatal ailment developed soon after. He was 44.

Two Men Arrested After Auto Crash

Threat to Kill Alleged Against One; Driver of Second Car Makes Complaint

Basil P. Cook, 44, of 449 North Fifth Street, was arrested on charges of assault and battery and threat to kill, and James Fenton, 32, of 834 North Sixth street, was held for reckless driving and disorderly conduct last night on complaint of C. N. Morrow, of 7 North Twenty-eighth Street, following an automobile accident. They will be arraigned in police court today.

Cook and Fenton were booked as “drunk” by Sergeant Stiles Whittaker, though Morrow declined to press such charges against them. Fenton was released later on $40 security.

Morrow was driving west on Federal Street and Fenton, in whose car Cook was passenger, was proceeding east. Fenton’s car turned left into Leonard Avenue. Morrow charged that Fenton then backed into Morrow’s car.

Morrow got out of his car and an argument ensued. Morrow is alleged to have accused Cook and Fenton of being drunk. When Morrow went into a nearby store to telephone for police, Cook is alleged to have followed him, grabbed him by the throat and threatened to kill him. Morrow then struck Cook and broke his hold.

When the Third district police patrol arrived, Cook was standing in the street. He was arrested by Patrolman Elwood Humphreys. Fenton ran into the store and refused to leave. He was dragged from the place by Patrolman Joseph Shreeves.

Woman Seeks Death After ‘Lovers’ Spat

Mrs. Florence Winstanley, 21, of 44 South Twenty-eighth street, attempted to end her life by taking poison last night, according to police, following a quarrel with a “boy friend.”

The young woman, police said, is estranged from her husband. She was found on the floor of her bedroom by her father, William Snyder, who summoned police. She was taken to Cooper Hospital in the Third Police district patrol.

Attendants at the hospital said her condition was not serious. She will be placed under arrest today, police said, and arraigned before Police Judge Garfield Pancoast.

George W. Spicks, 85, who retired as a Camden hotel keeper in 1923, died yesterday. Mr. Spicks died at his home, 52 South Twenty-eighth street, after a long illness. He owned a hotel at the corner of Twenty-first and Federal streets for 40 years. He was born in Philadelphia and had lived in Camden for 65 years.

He was the husband of the late Fredericka Spicks who died in 1928. He is survived by two daughters and Mrs. Florence Winstanley, both of Camden, and one granddaughter.

Mr. Spicks was a member of Aerie No. 42, Fraternal Order of Eagles. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p. m., at the Sudler-Eichel Funeral Home, Twenty-seventh and Carmen streets. Burial will be in Arlington cemetery.

State Trooper Roy Hill was severely wounded in a shootout that left one suspect dead in 1996. It closed after owner Bao Xing Lin was murdered March 11, 2004. Three suspects were arrested and charged with felony murder. One was sentenced to 25 years in prison with a mandatory minimum of 21 years 3 months in August 2005. 28th and Mickle were my Grandparents. In the late 1940s my grandfather worked for the owner of the store and lived in the middle of the block. Later he bought the store. He was awarded Breyer’s bonus for selling the most loose ice cream. They actually placed freezers for him in the basement at their cost to sell more. He would stay open until the last person was served. 10 cents a dip. They had nasty names for him like “bug foot Charlie” and “Thumb Print Charlie” from attempting to keep the ice cream on the cone. For a pint you got a gallon and for a dime you got almost a pint on a cone. Even on Christmas he felt obligated to keep the store open for the neighbors. My grandmother came over for a couple of hours and then my grandfather came over to keep the store open.

He sold the store and the new owner changed to another brand, raised cones to 15 cents and lost the store.

I remember my dad (Charles Kocher Jr.) laying new asphalt tiles along the candy cases from the long line. Soda was in water and you had to know your caps! When it was time for me to attend middle school, the Board of Education moved Junior High classes to Davis for me. I had been looking forward to eating lunch at my Pops.

He moved to Hillside Avenue in later years and kept all of Saint Joe’s carnival equipment in his garage and that paid his yearly taxes. Quite a business man! My dad was a police lieutenant and decided not to buy the store.
