State A. B. C. agents last night arrested Herman Divinsky, 46, a grocer, of 2801 Mitchell street, on a charge of selling beer without a license.

The arrest was made by William Brooks and Early Howe. Unable to furnish $500 bail, the grocer was committed to the city jail to await a Police Court hearing Monday.

TWO SUSPECTS ADMIT HAVING ROBBED HOUSE

Admitting having robbed one house and making an attempt in another instance, George Laws, aged 19, of 2804 Mitchell street, and Edward Thomas, aged 22, of 413 North Twenty-eighth street, were yesterday held by Recorder Stackhouse in Camden pending further inquiry. They confessed to ripping the water pipe from a vacant house at Twenty-second and Howell streets and then going to the home of Frederick Voigt, 222 North Thirty-second street, where they were detected in the act by a neighbor of Voigt’s.

From a description given by the neighbor Policeman Palmer arrested the pair.

MAN’S HEAD CUT OFF BY N.Y.-CAMDEN TRAIN

Albert Carpenter, 40, 2928 Mitchell street, was killed instantly yesterday by a New York-Camden train of the Amboy division, Pennsylvania Railroad, at Thirty-second street.

The man was picking coal from the ground at the side of a coal car near the tracks along which the train was coming. He is believed to have stumbled into the engine’s path.

S. M. Patterson, engineer, said he did not see the man. Carpenter was decapitated. A wife and two sons survive.

Five Die in Camden Nursing Home Fire

CAMDEN (AP) — Five residents of a nursing home here were killed today in a two alarm fire, authorities said.

A sixth resident, an 80-year-old man, jumped to safety from a second floor window, Chief Kenneth Penn said. He was reported to be in good condition at a Camden hospital.

Penn said two caretakers who had been in the building apparently escaped injury.

THE FIRE, which was reported at 5:25 a.m., was brought under control about 30 minutes later, he said. The cause of the blaze was not determined.

Penn said the fire started in an enclosed porch on the first floor of the 2½ story frame building. The bodies were discovered on the second floor of the building, Penn said. The residents apparently had been overcome by smoke, he added.

Penn said the bodies were taken to a local hospital to be identified. The name of the nursing home, which had been a private dwelling at one time, was not immediately available.

Widow of P.R.R. Employe Had 4 Grandchildren in Nation’s Armed Forces

Mrs. Linda W. Shivers, 80, one of the oldest members of the First Methodist Church, Camden, died suddenly yesterday of an apoplectic stroke at her home, 3215 Mitchell street.

Mrs. Shivers, the widow of Edward H. Shivers, Pennsylvania Railroad employe, who died 11 years ago, suffered a stroke a year ago but recovered and was in apparent good health when stricken yesterday.

She was the mother of four daughters and a son, has 16 grandchildren, four of whom are in the nation’s armed forces, and seven great-grandchildren. Among her grandchildren are Miss Hilda Shivers, of the Courier-Post editorial staff; Howard Shivers, art director of the Philadelphia Record, and George Shivers, Record photographer, who is serving in the U. S. Army and is stationed at Fort Dix.

The surviving daughters are Mrs. William Fisk, Blackwood; Mrs. S. S. McCormick, Linwood; Mrs. Harold L. O’Brien, Audubon, and Miss Louise Shivers, Camden, and a son, Hillman L., of Camden. A sister, Mrs. C. C. Corbin, of Richmond, Va., and a brother, Lee Massey, of Newport News, Va., also survive.

Funeral services in charge of the Schroeder Funeral Home, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mitchell street address. Burial will be in Harleigh Cemetery.

SHIVERS — On July 30, 1941, Linda W. (nee Massey) wife of the late Edward H. Shivers, age 80 years. Relatives and friends, also members of First Methodist Church are invited to attend the funeral services on Saturday at 2 p.m. from her late residence, 3215 Mitchell St., Camden. Tipsy Driver Jailed, Others Will Follow

A Camden man was sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined a total of $224.50 today after Municipal Judge Dzick found him guilty of driving while drunk.

The defendant was Francis A. Burns, 48, of 3280 Mitchell st., who was arrested Dec. 17 and pronounced unfit to drive by Dr. Lee J. Hammett, police surgeon. Burns pleaded not guilty.

Before being led away to jail, Burns was given a sharp lecture by Judge Dzick, who announced that all persons found guilty of drunken driving would be jailed.

26 Cases Pending

“I thought the public had learned a lesson from all of the editorials and all of the pleading by The Courier-Post asking people not to drink and drive,” Judge Dzick said. “The safety campaign which The Courier-Post has so diligently pushed seems to have gone in one ear and out the other.

“There are 26 drunken driving cases still pending on the court calendar. From now on I will jail everyone found guilty.”

Then Judge Dzick told Burns: “You may think I’m a tough judge, but by the time you get out of jail you’ll think I’ve done you a favor.”
