3 in Assembly Race Plan Tour Tonight

Lodge, Sheehan and Roye to Speak at Democratic Rallies
All three Democratic Assembly nominees—Henry Lodge, Bartholomew Sheehan and Harry Roye—will speak tonight at three Roosevelt rallies, one at Magnolia and the others in the First and Ninth wards, Camden. Announcement was made they also will endeavor to address other Roosevelt meetings tonight.
The other rallies tonight will include meetings in Ashland, Pennsauken and the Fourth, Twelfth and Thirteenth wards.
A Collingswood rally will be conducted this afternoon, at 3.30 o’clock, at 784 Haddon avenue, that borough.
Lodge will be the principal speaker at the Ashland rally, to be held at the hall of Ashland Fire Company, under sponsorship of the Ashland Democratic Club.
The other Ashland speakers will include Edward J. Kelleher, Camden county campaign manager; former Prosecutor Ethan P. Wescott, Frank M. Lario, Grover Richman, Jr.; Samuel T. French, Jr.; William Brooks; Thomas M. Madden, of the Camden County Board of Elections, and Benjamin Dzick.
The Magnolia rally, sponsored by the Roosevelt Democratic Club, will be held at the fire hall there at Evesham avenue, west of Warwick road. The speakers will include Sheehan, Roye and Lodge; Mrs. Bertha Shippen Irving, Guy Lee, Jr., nominee for Congress; Mayor-designate George E. Brunner, of Camden, state committeeman; Howard Callingham, Daniel West, Mildred Yemmans, Mrs. Emma E. Hyland, Democratic state committeewoman; Oliver H. Bond. Kelleher, Prosecutor Samuel Iando [sic], Alice Pearl Harris and George Aaron.
Rally in First Ward
The First ward meeting will be at 325 State street, sponsored by the First Ward Democratic Club. The speakers include Lodge, Roye and Sheehan, City Commissioner Frank J. Hartmann, Jr.; Gene Mariano, Camden county Italian campaign chairman; Aaron, Samuel T. French, Sr.; Kelleher, Norman Heine, Frank Crawford and John Blandy.
Sheehan, Roye and Lodge also will address the Ninth Ward Democratic Club’s Roosevelt rally at Sixth and Berkley street. Also listed for addresses are Lee, Dr. Ernest Larossa, nominee for coroner; Aaron, Angelo De Persia, Blandy, and Kelleher.
Mrs. Bertha Shippen Irving, Haddonfield postmaster, will address the Collingswood meeting this afternoon under auspices of the Collingswood Democratic Club. Other speakers also will be heard.
The Twelfth ward meeting will be that of the Twelfth Ward Democratic Club at 2822 Mitchell street. Among the speakers will be Kelleher, Allen Dolgin, Samuel Gelfand, Dr. Bowman, Carl Egerton, Foster Meekins and Ralph Acoo.
Fourth Ward Rally
The Fourth ward rally, to be conducted at 428 Stevens street by the Fourth Ward Democratic Club, will be addressed by Meyer Wessel, formerly of the Camden Board of Education; Benjamin Daick, Madden, Lario, Kelleher and De Persia.
The Pennsauken Colored Democratic Club is sponsoring a Roosevelt rally at 1838 North Forty-ninth street, Pennsauken, with Dr. Howard Primas, Grace Jones, Dr. Bowman, Milton Jones, Clarence Leigh, and Kelleher listed as the speakers.
The Thirteenth Ward Democratic Club will conduct another Roosevelt rally at Haddon and Kaighn avenues. The speakers tonight will include Isaac Eason, assistant prosecutor; Freeholder Andrew J. McMahon, Frank Suttill, Edward Fox, Leonard Savadove, Howard Callingham, Kelleher, Anthony Mitchell and Abe Greenberg.
A group of speakers will address two central-city rallies in the morning and afternoon, one at 11.45 o’clock and the other at 7.45 p. m. The speakers listed are Theodore French, John Donges, Clarence Dunkelberger, Grover Richman, Jr.; Joseph Moss, A. David Epstein, S. A. Levy, Harry Adams, Benton Childers and Victor Rocco.
Held on Beer Charge

State A. B. C. agents last night arrested Herman Divinsky, 46, a grocer, of 2801 Mitchell street, on a charge of selling beer without a license.
The arrest was made by William Brooks and Early Howe. Unable to furnish $500 bail, the grocer was committed to the city jail to await a Police Court hearing Monday.
Two Suspects Admit Having Robbed House

Admitting having robbed one house and making an attempt in another instance, George Laws, aged 19, of 2804 Mitchell street, and Edward Thomas, aged 22, of 413 North Twenty-eighth street, were yesterday held by Recorder Stackhouse in Camden pending further inquiry. They confessed to ripping the water pipe from a vacant house at Twenty-second and Howell streets and then going to the home of Frederick Voigt, 222 North Thirty-second street, where they were detected in the act by a neighbor of Voigt’s.
From a description given by the neighbor Policeman Palmer arrested the pair.

Man’s Head Cut Off by N.Y.-Camden Train

Albert Carpenter, 40, 2928 Mitchell street, was killed instantly yesterday by a New York-Camden train of the Amboy division, Pennsylvania Railroad, at Thirty-second street.
The man was picking coal from the ground at the side of a coal car near the tracks along which the train was coming. He is believed to have stumbled into the engine’s path.
S. M. Patterson, engineer, said he did not see the man. Carpenter was decapitated. A wife and two sons survive.

Five Die in Camden Nursing Home Fire
CAMDEN (AP) — Five residents of a nursing home here were killed today in a two alarm fire, authorities said.
A sixth resident, an 80-year-old man, jumped to safety from a second floor window, Chief Kenneth Penn said. He was reported to be in good condition at a Camden hospital.
Penn said two caretakers who had been in the building apparently escaped injury.
THE FIRE, which was reported at 5:25 a.m., was brought under control about 30 minutes later, he said. The cause of the blaze was not determined.
Penn said the fire started in an enclosed porch on the first floor of the 2½ story frame building. The bodies were discovered on the second floor of the building, Penn said. The residents apparently had been overcome by smoke, he added.
Penn said the bodies were taken to a local hospital to be identified. The name of the nursing home, which had been a private dwelling at one time, was not immediately available.

Widow of P.R.R. Employe Had 4 Grandchildren in Nation’s Armed Forces
Mrs. Linda W. Shivers, 80, one of the oldest members of the First Methodist Church, Camden, died suddenly yesterday of an apoplectic stroke at her home, 3215 Mitchell street.
Mrs. Shivers, the widow of Edward H. Shivers, Pennsylvania Railroad employe, who died 11 years ago, suffered a stroke a year ago but recovered and was in apparent good health when stricken yesterday.
She was the mother of four daughters and a son, has 16 grandchildren, four of whom are in the nation’s armed forces, and seven great-grandchildren. Among her grandchildren are Miss Hilda Shivers, of the Courier-Post editorial staff; Howard Shivers, art director of the Philadelphia Record, and George Shivers, Record photographer, who is serving in the U. S. Army and is stationed at Fort Dix.
The surviving daughters are Mrs. William Fisk, Blackwood; Mrs. S. S. McCormick, Linwood; Mrs. Harold L. O’Brien, Audubon, and Miss Louise Shivers, Camden, and a son, Hillman L., of Camden. A sister, Mrs. C. C. Corbin, of Richmond, Va., and a brother, Lee Massey, of Newport News, Va., also survive.
Funeral services in charge of the Schroeder Funeral Home, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mitchell street address. Burial will be in Harleigh Cemetery.

Judge Dzick Cracks Down:
A Camden man was sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined a total of $224.50 today after Municipal Judge Dzick found him guilty of driving while drunk.
The defendant was Francis A. Burns, 48, of 3280 Mitchell st., who was arrested Dec. 17 and pronounced unfit to drive by Dr. Lee J. Hammett, police surgeon. Burns pleaded not guilty.
Before being led away to jail, Burns was given a sharp lecture by Judge Dzick, who announced that all persons found guilty of drunken driving would be jailed.
26 Cases Pending
“I thought the public had learned a lesson from all of the editorials and all of the pleading by The Courier-Post asking people not to drink and drive,” Judge Dzick said. “The safety campaign which The Courier-Post has so diligently pushed seems to have gone in one ear and out the other.
“There are 26 drunken driving cases still pending on the court calendar. From now on I will jail everyone found guilty.”
Then Judge Dzick told Burns: “You may think I’m a tough judge, but by the time you get out of jail you’ll think I’ve done you a favor.”
Burns, questioned by his attorney, Remo M. Croce, testified he had had only one glass of beer before being arrested, but that he had taken a compound of sedatives for a nervous condition.
Dr. Hammett testified, however, that his examination showed Burns was unfit to drive due to intoxication.
Patrolman Roy C. Newkirk Jr. testified he arrested Burns at 4.38 p. m. Dec. 17 after Burns turned left from Federal st., cutting across the path of the policeman’s auto, and headed the wrong way into 24th st., bucking oncoming traffic. Newkirk testified that Burns’ car was “weaving.”
Hit-Runner Fined
Burns was fined $200 on the charge, plus $20 medical costs and $4.50 court costs.
In another case, Lapole Fuller, 37, of 1171 Lawrence st., was acquitted of drunken driving but found guilty of hit-run driving. He was sentenced to pay a fine of $100 or serve 60 days in jail. He pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Fuller was arrested on complaint of Edmund Anyzek Jr., of 827 Liberty st., who testified that Fuller’s car struck a fuel oil truck belonging to Anyzek’s father, which was parked in front of the Anyzek residence on the morning of Dec. 19. Anyzek testified that Fuller backed his car away following the collision and drove off.
Two Other Cars Hit
Patrolman Edward Fulton testified that Fuller then rammed two other parked cars in the vicinity of 10th st. and Kaighns [sic] ave. before he was halted and placed under arrest.
Dr. John J. Fleitz, police surgeon, told the court there was no indication Fuller was drunk, and that the defendant had been pronounced fit to drive.
Police, Fire Tests Take Heavy Toll

TRENTON — The high rate of failures on police and fire examinations was repeated yesterday in the Civil Service Department’s announcement of the results of tests for fire captain and patrolman in Camden City.
In the captain’s test, 23 passed, 64 failed and two did not show up for the test. In the test for patrolman, 10 passed, 32 failed and 14 failed to show. In the non-residents’ test for Camden patrolman, six passed, eight failed and five did not appear.
In the fire captain’s test, Kenneth M. Clark of 111 North 26th St., Camden, a veteran, qualified with a score of 92.6, highest for the seven veterans who qualified. Joseph R. Gfrorer of 3040 N. Constitution Road, Camden, was highest of applicants with a score of 96.5.
In the residents’ patrolman test, Robert D. Craig of 817 Vine Street was high with 78. In the non resident’s test, Edwin B. Hoffman of 514 Walnut Street, Audubon, a veteran qualified with 72.2 and Flem J. Hopkins Jr. of 113 Estates Ave., Pine Hill, was high with 78.
