Lawrence Manou
Our house was a twin. Our neighbors were the Segals. Beyond them (1425) were the Sternbergs. Across the street (1438) was a Mr Laveson (sp) and the Klines. Across Lansdowne Avenue lived the Weinsteins (1431 in photo). The neighborhood was primarily solid middle class Jewish, with quite a few Orthodox, though we were not. I recall a Rabbi Riff walking the neighborhood. Clearly a distinguished man, though his appearance scared to death the non-Jewish neighborhood children. There was also a Rabbi Kellman, whose beautiful daughter Nadine I yearned for. At the end of the block lived a Jackie Chew, always in trouble. Our school was Parkside to which we all (safely) walked to and from home. Other kids I played with had names like Asbell, Bantivoglio, Clyman, Colangelo, Friedenberg, Lundy, Parks, and Sherman.
I do recall that we lived there briefly owing to my father’s restaurant at Second and Market. He catered to the executives at RCA and Campbell Soup. He had bought a house in Haddonfield at the outbreak of the war which was occupied by a tenant. Laws then prohibited evicting tenants during wartime, so we remained in Camden till about 1949, when we bought a summer house at the shore. He may have held title to the house into the fifties, possibly renting it before selling it. We had a two-car garage behind the house which housed black (always black) Buicks.
When I left Parkside, I was sent off to boarding school and then—my family having moved to another house in Haddonfield—to Moorestown Friends. I cannot imagine what this once clean, well-kept neighborhood must look like now.
Finally, I recall Mr Sam Bosco, my father’s barber, who called at his office twice a month to trim his hair. It seems he may have had a darker side judging by the news reports.

MRS. DOROTHY ELLIS
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon for Mrs. Dorothy Ellis, 28, of 1434 Ormond avenue, who died Sunday at the home of her mother at 6144 Walton avenue, Philadelphia. Burial was in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Philadelphia. Mrs. Ellis, who had been ill four months, also is survived by her husband, Zellie, Broadway shoe merchant, and an infant daughter.

Camden Youth Speaker at Wenonah Program

Wenonah, June 7.—Harry Schard, son of Mrs. Minnie Schard, 1447 Ormond avenue, Camden, will deliver the class prophecy Thursday morning at the annual class day exercises of the graduating class of Wenonah Military Academy.
William Reed, also of Camden, was elected to the office of treasurer to serve during the commencement week functions.
Others to share the program Thursday are: President’s address, D. Lawrence Ewald, Washington, D. C.; class will, John S. Clarke, Indiana, Pa.; class history, Thomas F. Bergmann, New York City; presentation speakers, John J. Seitz and Anthony Weick, Philadelphia. Mrs. Curtis Kendig, Norristown, Pa., will render several vocal solos, accompanied by Miss Grace Poley, pianist, of Limerick, Pa.
The class day program features a baseball game in the afternoon against Camden Catholic High School and concludes Thursday night with the military hop.
3 Camden Students Get Degrees at N.Y.U.

Three Camden residents, including two school teachers, were among the 4,000 students graduated from New York University yesterday at the 101st commencement exercises at Ohio Field, University Heights, New York.
The Camden students are Miss May Marchant, 422 Linden Street, teacher at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School, Bachelor of Science degree in School of Education, Bella Polivnick, 1449 Ormond Avenue, teacher in Camden High School, Bachelor of Science degree in School of Education, and Charles E. Hutchinson, 1353 Park Boulevard, Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, School of Engineering.

Tetrachloride Fumes Sicken 3 Firemen

Three firemen were sickened Friday night when they inhaled fumes from a mattress fire after a carbon tetrachloride fire extinguisher was used on the blaze by police.
Examined at West Jersey Hospital and released were Clarence Hawkins, 30, of 1570 Park blvd.; Howard Ways, 40, of 909 Spruce st., and William Warren, 43, of 1546 Ormand [sic] st. All three are hosemen with Engine Company 8.
According to District Chief Daniel Jiannetto, the mattress was burning in the home of Albert Harkless, 33, of 714 Walnut st. Jiannetto said police had used a tetrachloride fire extinguisher before arrival of firemen and that the dangerous fumes sickened the men when they entered the room to put out the fire. Jiannetto said the blaze was caused by a careless smoker.

Fire Pumper Crashes Into Camden Office

A fire engine crashed through the front of an automobile insurance office in Camden on Saturday, cracking the entire brick face of the three-story building and leaving it in danger of collapse.
All traffic was halted in the area of Broadway and Pine sts. in fear the rumble of buses and trucks would bring the building down. The fire engine was left inside the bulk glass front of the Basin & Basin Insurance Co. office for nearly three hours until city workers could shore up the building so the vehicle could be removed safely.
COLLIDES WITH AUTO
The apparatus, a pumper of Engine 1, 4th and Pine sts., was responding to a mattress fire at 434 S. 6th st. at 2:30 P.M. when it collided with an automobile.
Both vehicles mounted the curb at the southeast corner of the downtown intersection.
Mrs. Maria Gruber, 74, of 505 Pine st., who was walking by the building was brushed by the fire engine and knocked to the sidewalk, where she was showered with glass from the smashed window and door. She was admitted to West Jersey Hospital with fractures of the right ankle and lower right leg and cuts of the face and legs.
FIREMAN INJURED
Fireman Isaac Muns, 36, of 717 State st., driver of the pumper, suffered a fractured right foot and leg cuts and was admitted to Cooper Hospital. Fireman George Dixon, 31, of 1554 Ormand ave., Camden, who was riding on the pumper, was treated at the same hospital for cuts of the right leg and right hand and then released.
Two young people in the automobile also were treated for injuries at Cooper Hospital. They were Charles Wilson, 24, of 407 Monmouth st., Gloucester City, N. J., and Janet Mayhew, 17, of 210 Mercer st., also of Gloucester city. Both received head cuts and the girl suffered a back injury.
Raymond McClintock, 25, of 530 Lester Terrace, Camden, a Camden Public Works Department employe, was treated at the Cooper Hospital for lacerations of the neck and left hand.
He was assisting in the placing of shoring to brace the building against collapse after the crash when struck by a piece of glass that fell from one of the shattered windows.
CROWD GATHERS
Owen Ribble, manager of the insurance office, said he worked there alone Saturday afternoon and left just 15 minutes before the accident occurred. He returned to the scene after police summoned him from his home at 340 Coles ave., Cherry Hill.
Police moved back a crowd of several hundred persons who gathered at the intersection. Then they cordoned off Broadway at Spruce and Line sts., a block north and south of Pine, and barricaded Pine st. at 5th and 6th, a block east and west of Broadway.
William H. Harker, Camden city director of public works, reached the scene at 4 P. M. and immediately declared the building condemned.
The Fire Department’s heavy-duty rescue squad built heavy lumber supports against the building and cautiously removed the fire engine at 5:20 P. M.
Six Injured in Crash Of Fire Truck, Auto

A city fireman and five other persons were injured Saturday when a fire engine collided with a car at Broadway and Pine st. and then plunged into an insurance office on the corner, according to police.
Admitted to Cooper Hospital with severe cuts was Fireman Isaac Muns, 36, of 710 State rd., identified by police as the driver of the engine. His condition was listed as serious. George Dixon, 31, of 1554 Ormond ave., the other fireman riding the engine, was treated at the hospital for cuts.
Mrs. Maria Gruber, 74, of 505 Pine st., who police said was standing on the corner waiting for a bus when the accident happened, was admitted to West Jersey Hospital with multiple fractures of the right leg.
Others Treated
Also treated at Cooper Hospital for multiple injuries were Charles Wilson, 24, of 407 Monmouth st., Gloucester City, identified as the driver of the car, and his passenger, Janet Mayhew, 17, of 210 Mercer st., Gloucester.
Workmen began shoring up the front of the building occupied by the Basin and Basin Agency Inc., automobile insurers, as fears were expressed the building might collapse from the impact if the engine were moved. Raymond McClintock, a city employe, of 530 Lester ter., sustained a cut that required four stitches in his neck when a piece of glass fell from the second floor while the shoring operation was underway.
Agency Was Closed
The agency was closed when the engine plunged into the three-story brick office building on the southeast corner.
Police said it had not been determined whether Mrs. Gruber was hurt by falling debris or by the engine itself as it jumped over the curb.
The engine was responding to an alarm sounded for a minor fire at 434 S. 6th st. It was confined to one room of a private house.
Charles Foulon, Ex-Baker, Dies

Charles Foulon, 74, of 1453 Ormond avenue, died today in West Jersey hospital where he had been for two weeks. Born in Philadelphia, he came to Camden when he was a child and had resided here since.
He operated the Foulon bakery in the 500 block on the south side of Federal street for many years, and retired 25 years ago. The business was established by his father, Charles Foulon.
Surviving are his widow, Laura; two daughters, Mrs. Miriam M. Joy, Fairwater, Fla., and Mrs. Elizabeth Adams, Camden; a son, Charles P., Tooele, Utah, and two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Maguire, Haddon Heights, and Mrs. Mary F. Street, Moorestown.
Services will be held Saturday at 11 a. m. in the funeral home of Benjamin R. Denny, 453 South Sixth street. The Rev. H. W. Bland Detweiler, pastor of the Parkside Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Harleigh cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday night.
