Atlantic Avenue
Atlantic Avenue lies three blocks south of Kaighn Avenue, and runs from Front Street east to Haddon Avenue. Atlantic Avenue east of 7th Street was and remains a mix of homes and commercial properties. The street continues between 7th and 9th Streets, with interstate highway I-676 and the elevated rail line crossing the street. East of 9th Street to Haddon Avenue the street is primarily residential.

In default of $500 bail Joseph Polnick, of 1180 Sycamore street, was committed to the county jail in Camden yesterday by Justice Thompson on a charge of atrocious assault and battery on Tony Romanio, of 309 Atlantic avenue. It is alleged that the defendant struck Romanio over the head with a crowbar and that while the complainant lay unconscious Polnick bit a piece out of his cheek. Child Dies From Burns
From terrible burns received on April 12, Susanna Mary Tombo, aged 4 years, of 309 Atlantic avenue, died in the Homeopathic Hospital in Camden yesterday. The little one received her injuries as a result of playing with matches during the temporary absence of members of her family. Philadelphia Inquirer, April 28, 1915.

The body of Samuel Harding, of No. 313 Atlantic avenue, Camden, was found yesterday morning hanging lifeless in his stable at the rear of the house. It is thought his death was the result of melancholy at the recent loss of his thirteen-year-old daughter. He was about forty-five years of age, and leaves a wife and four children. Over in Camden
Charged with setting fire to a stack of hay on the farm of George Aldrick, at Audubon, John Page was committed to the county jail yesterday.
William Bachrach, who was arrested on a capias in a damage suit instituted by Wilbur F. Ellis, secured $3000 bail and was released.
H. S. Tatem, of 279 Sycamore street, had his bicycle stolen while in a Broadway store yesterday. Walter Beckwith, of 1111 Emma street, was committed to jail in default of bail, charged with taking the wheel.
The following cases were reported at the Cooper Hospital, Camden, last night: Bertha Huski, 1124 Sycamore street, feet burned; Harry Getter, Richland, contused wounds of the side, and Amy Mann, 314 Atlantic avenue, hand sprained. Philadelphia Inquirer, August 13, 1896.

2 Women Granted Decrees of Divorce
2 WOMEN GRANTED DECREES OF DIVORCE
Two women who said they were forced to leave their husbands won divorce recommendations from Advisory Master William B. Knight yesterday.
Mrs. Mary Joslin, 1890 Mulford street, said that after "15 or 20 preliminary separations," her husband, Felix, ordered her and their son out of their home in July, 1933, because she refused to go with him to Sea Isle City "and live in a tent on the beach for the July 4 holiday."
Mrs. Joslin said she was married in July, 1907, and that her husband started quarreling with her a few months after their marriage. She testified her husband ordered their daughter, Mrs. Catherine Shaw of Camden, out of their home in 1927.
Joslin, whose address was given as 358 Atlantic avenue, had filed suit for divorce against his wife, alleging desertion. Mrs. Joslin filed a countersuit. Later Joslin dropped his suit.

Charged With Larceny
Grant Alston, 50 years old, of 417 Atlantic avenue, was yesterday held in $500 bail by Recorder Stackhouse in Camden, charged with the larceny of sixty pounds of brass. Alston was employed by Louis Katz, a junk dealer, at 1416 South Third street. Philadelphia Inquirer, December 4, 1917.

Wife Biffed by Husband Wins Decree for Divorce
A husband who celebrated St. Patrick’s Day, 1932, by singing “I’ll Give You Something to Remember Me By” and handing his wife a swift left to the chin, lost a divorce action yesterday.
Charging extreme cruelty was Mrs. Minnie Alford, of 444 Atlantic Avenue, Camden. Advisory Master in Chancery William J. Kraft recommended an absolute decree and the custody of her two children, Willard, 5, and Ellwood, 2.
Alexander Alford, the husband, lives at 244 Cedar Avenue. The couple were married June 30, 1923, by the Rev. E. A. Miller, in Camden. Mrs. Alford said that the time of extreme cruelty began in October, 1930, and continued until March 18, 1932 when she was compelled to leave.
Mrs. Alford said her husband often choked her, telling her over and over that he was going “to choke her to death.” In speaking of the St. Patrick’s Day altercation, she charged her husband “knocked her cold.”
Willard Appleton, the woman’s step-father, declared that a fight always followed any suggestion by Mrs. Alford that her husband get up out of bed. Appleton also said that Alford disliked any suggestion that he should go out and look for work.
Appleton told Kraft that the lives of Mr. and Mrs. Alford were “one fight after another” with the woman coming out the loser, black and blue marks all over her head, face and shoulders. The decision quickly followed.
Alford did not contest.

I have a feeling the time is about 1928/30, because the car is probably the same one he used in making medical calls around Camden. Sometimes he would take his kids and me in the back seat, which was loads of fun. Interesting to note, that when he made calls, he always wanted the kids to come along, and later, when I was older and visiting him, he would take me with him. Ocean City, July 28.—Walter Lusson, 28, 614 Atlantic avenue, this city, was fined $25 and had his license revoked by Police Judge John Roberts today on charges of reckless driving and failing to heed police whistles. Michael Zawojski, 51, died in his home, 916 Atlantic avenue, Saturday. A resident of Camden 44 years, he was employed by the Springfield Coated Paper Co. 15 years as a machine operator. He was a member of the Association of Ukrainian Catholics in America, Local 52.
Surviving are his widow, Anna; a son, Michael Jr., and a daughter, Catherine, at home.
Requiem high Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a. m. in St. Michael’s Ukrainian R. C. Church, Seventh and Florence streets. Relatives and friends will meet at 9 a. m. in the residence, where friends may call Tuesday night. Three men were arrested last night in a police raid on an alleged speakeasy at 1108 Thurman street. A small "wash-boiler" still and a 20 gallon can partly filled with wine were confiscated.
Tony Salousky, 28, was held in $500 bail as proprietor for a hearing today. Frank Shultz, 25, of 929 Atlantic avenue, and Henry C. Iesli, 49, of 1224 Chase street, were held as witnesses.

Numbers Writer Sent to Jail for 60 Days
Chester Lewandowski, 27, of 1000 Atlantic Avenue, was sentenced to 60 days in the county jail by judge Samuel M. Shay after he pleaded non vult in Criminal court to possession of numbers lottery slips. City detectives arrested Lewandowski two months ago.

Who Socked Who With What Prop Debated in Court
The Monday morning washday blues yesterday landed three South Camden neighbors in Police Court in a futile effort to decide who hit who with what clothes prop.
It seems that Mrs. Sophia Anyzek, of 1013 Atlantic avenue, hung out her wash bright and early Monday. Just as bright and early, Mrs. Helen Pepiak, 1011 Atlantic avenue, decided to beat her rugs.
Well, the wind was in the direction from rugs to wash and things became pretty tense between the families Anyzek and Pepiak. Somehow Mrs. Anyzek’s husband, Stanley, got in the argument.
According to Mrs. Pepiak’s version to Judge Mariano, it was Mrs. Anyzek who wielded clothes props, whanging her in the back with the ungainly weapon.
That didn’t gee with Mrs. Anyzek’s version. It was Mrs. Pepiak who swung the prop and she (Mrs. Anyzek) simply ducked. The prop hit a clothes pole and broke, said Mrs. Anyzek, and a flying fragment struck Mrs. Pepiak in the back.
Mariano thought he had a solution when he suggested that both families move away from the neighborhood. But then it developed that they owned their own homes and the best he could propose was $500 bonds for all hands to keep the peace.
Mrs. Zophia Anyzek
Funeral services for Mrs. Zophia Anyzek, a Camden resident for more than 40 years, will be held at 9 a. m. Wednesday at St. Joseph’s R. C. Church, Tenth and Mechanic streets.
Mrs. Anyzek, a native of Poland, died Friday. She is survived by her husband, Stanley, of 1013 Atlantic avenue, six sons and two daughters. They are Edward, Joseph, Benjamin, Steven and Victor, of Camden, Alfred, who is stationed in Annapolis with the Navy; Mrs. Stella Spada and Mrs. Adele Bodgan, of Camden. A sister, Mrs. Justine Kmiec, is also a Camden resident, while another sister, Mrs. Mary Toton, lives in Poland.
Mrs. Anyzek was a member of the Rosary Society at the church, and of Grove 40 of the Woodmen’s Circle. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s cemetery, Chews Landing. Friends may call at the residence Tuesday evening. Camden Courier-Post, March 10, 1951.

Knocked down by a motorcyclist, five-year-old John H Mercer, of 1143 Atlantic avenue, received a probable fracture of the skull and severe lacerations. He was taken to the Homeopathic Hospital. The motorcyclist's identity is not known by the police.

Honesty Costs Driver an Additional 65 Cents
Savadore Agut, 24, of 1168 Atlantic avenue, Camden, realizes that it does not always pay to be honest. Agut arrested Thursday night by Policeman Reese for driving without lights or a license, left $25 with the Pennsauken township police as security for his appearance for a hearing today.
The fine for having no license is $25. To this it was necessary for Recorder George Diehl to add the costs of 65 cents, which would still be jingling in Agut’s pockets had he been less conscientious.

Narcotics Week
To the Editor:
Sir—Next week, February 21 to 28, is observed internationally as Narcotic Educational Week. It is hoped that intensive education presented everywhere will be a check on the use of all narcotics among which are listed opium (including morphine, codeine, heroin), cocaine, marihuana, alcohol and nicotine.
Since mental and physical degeneracy often follow their use, it is not surprising that many addicts become criminals.
During Narcotic Education Week public schools, Sunday schools, all public lecturers and editors have a great opportunity to work concertedly that education may contribute its part to build strong sentiment against the use of any drug of which one may become a victim.

'Kid' Roller Skates Jolt Love Off Base
A roller-skating child bride who thought her 19 year old husband “too old” for her was well on her way to being divorced yesterday by Al Daidone, 29, of 424 Clinton street.
Advisory Master Knight recommended a decree for Daidone. His wife, Fannie, lives near Scranton, Pa., with their child, Catherine, nine. Mrs. Daidone is now 25. They were married when she was not yet 15 and he only 19, Daidone testified. But instead of settling down, he said, his wife was roller skating day and night, and complained that he was too old. She deserted him, he said, in the Fall of 1928.
Knight also advised a decree for Mrs. Clara Zoeller Wall Safford, of 1269 Atlantic avenue, from Robert H., also known as Cornelius J. Linskey. They were married Feb. 10, 1923 and he deserted her in December, 1929, she said. World war bonus papers came to him in the name of Linskey, Mrs. Safford testified, but he never explained why. — Camden Courier-Post, February 15, 1938.
Found ill in his motor boat near the Baird avenue bridge, Camden, on November 18, John Seargle, a carpenter, 69 years old, died in the Homeopathic Hospital yesterday, of pneumonia. Philadelphia Inquirer, January 16, 1922.
Mrs. Mary Krasowski
Mrs. Mary Krasowski, 70, of 1230 Atlantic ave., died Friday in her home. Born in Poland, she was a resident of Camden for 38 years.
Surviving are her husband Paul; four daughters, Mrs. Stella Richman, Mt. Holly; Mrs. Mary Barthomejusz, Philadelphia; Mrs. Adele McClaughlin, Oaklyn, and Mrs. Stella Dzinski, Camden; a son Roman, Camden, and seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Solemn requiem Mass will be sung at 9 a. m. in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 10th and Mechanic sts. Friends and relatives will meet at 8 a. m. Wednesday at the Stanley A. Zembruski Funeral Home, 1643 Mt. Ephraim ave., where they may call Tuesday evening. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Chews Landing. Camden Courier-Post, January 26, 1957.

Mrs. Yetta Spigler
Services for Mrs. Yetta Spigler, 78, of 1310 Atlantic ave., who died Saturday at the Laurelview Nursing Home, Mt. Laurel, were Sunday at the Berschler Funeral Home, Pennsauken. Burial was in the Crescent Burial Park.
The wife of the late Harry Spigler, she was a member of the Congregation of the Sons of Israel.

Found guilty of a charge of abusing eight-year-old Mary Melchert, of 1321 Atlantic avenue, Gustav Szukay, 26 years old, was yesterday sentenced by Judge Kates to serve from two to twelve years in the State Prison.
