The 1000 block turns up in the newspapers: a thief took about $65 from 1025 Morton Street in 1938 (Burglar Gets $65); Benjamin F. Powell of 1073 Morton Street was caught beneath a falling roof in 1915 (Benjamin F. Powell Injured); William Butler of 1074 died of acute indigestion in 1918 (William Butler Dies); and Edward Simpson of the same address died in 1950 (Edward Simpson).

Burglar Gets $65

Camden Courier-Post —

While Walter Wilson and his wife were attending a movie yesterday afternoon, a thief ransacked their home at 1025 Morton Street and stole about $65. Wilson reported to detective bureau. Detective Gus Fortune said the burglar entered through the cellar and pried open the kitchen door. Wilson said $12 was taken from a pair of his trousers; $50 from a chest and one dollar and some change from a small bank.

While standing with a team near a building in course of construction at the head of Line street, Benjamin F. Powell, aged 33 years, of 1073 Morton street, was caught beneath a falling roof. One leg was badly crushed, but he refused to go to a hospital.

Edward Simpson, 76, of 1074 Morton street, died Saturday after a long illness. A native of Camden, he was a lifelong resident. Surviving are his widow, Sadie, and two sons, Walter A. and William, all of Camden. Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home of B. C. Schroeder & Sons, 715 Cooper street, where friends may call Tuesday night. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

V. Raczykowski Dies at 78

V. Raczykowski obituary, New Jersey Business, 1955

Vincent Raczykowski, 78, founder and owner of the Newport Bottling Works, 1101 Morton Street, died Wednesday in West Jersey Hospital. A native of Poland, he lived in Camden 54 years and founded the bottling works in 1917.

He was a member of the board of directors of the State Beverage Distributors of New Jersey, a past president of the Polish National Alliance Lodge 45; and a past president of the Camden County Polish American Republican Club. He lived at the Morton Street address.

Surviving are his wife, Josephine; two sons, Stephen of Pennsauken and Bruno at home; and two grandchildren. Friends will meet Monday at 8 a.m. in the Zembroski Funeral Home at 1643 Mount Ephraim Avenue. High requiem Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, 10th and Mechanic streets. There will be a viewing in the funeral home Sunday night. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Chews Landing.

Fire at 1109 Morton Street

Fire at 1109 Morton Street, March 9, 2009

On March 9, 2009, Camden’s Squad 7 arrived on Morton Street and found heavy fire in a dwelling. With reports of people trapped, Battalion One transmitted the second alarm. The fire extended to the porch and to the exposures. All searches proved negative and the fire was brought under control at the 30 minute mark. The Camden City Fire Marshal is investigating the fire.

Charged with the theft of a phonograph and electrical equipment valued at $85 from a Summer bungalow at Laurel Springs, four youths were arrested.

The youths are Joseph Banbe, of 1112 Morton street; Paul Urban, of 1328 Morton street; Alfred Brudzinski, of 1204 Morton street, and John Murphy of 1335 Shunk street, Philadelphia.

A hearing on drunken driving charges against John Czetyrka, 48, of 1176 Morton street, was ordered held over until tomorrow in Police Court yesterday.

The charges were lodged following an accident at Ninth street near Fairmount street Sunday at 3 a.m., when an auto assertedly driven by Czetyrka hit the car of Elwood Urbanowicz, of 1326 Jackson street, then continued going until it crashed into a pole on Fairmount street. Officers Vernon Jones and George Weber, who arrived on the scene a short time later, testified Czetyrka was intoxicated but the case was continued so that Urbanowicz might be present to identify him as driving the car.

Refusal of a Camden man to press a drunken driving complaint aroused the ire of Judge Mariano in police court yesterday.

The defendant was John Czetyrka, 48, of 1176 Morton street, who was charged by Elwood Urbanowicz, of 1328 Jackson street, with being the driver of an auto that struck his car early last Sunday and then hit a pole on Ninth street.

The case was postponed from Monday when Urbanowicz failed to appear in court.

Urbanowicz refused to press the charges. He told the court he was “sore” when he caused the arrest of the driver.

“Did the $25 paid for damages to your car relieve your soreness?” said the court. Then Mariano added: “Can you realize your own child being killed by a drunken driver?”

Mariano then postponed the case until July 29 pending further investigation against Czetyrka.

The others who qualified in the order of their passing were:

Struck by falling timbers when a shed he was demolishing collapsed at the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad terminal this morning, John P. Brand, aged 35 years, of 1224 Morton street sustained painful lacerations of the legs and arms. He was taken to the new Homeopathic Hospital. His condition is not serious.

So. Camden Man Dies On Job at Shipyard, Camden Courier-Post, June 26, 1950

A South Camden man was fatally stricken at 1.30 a.m. today on his job in the power house of the New York Shipyard.

Samuel Napierkowski, 60, of 1257 Morton street, was pronounced dead on arrival at West Jersey hospital, where he was taken by fellow employes. Coroner Blake said death apparently was caused by heart failure.

Mr. Napierkowski is survived by his widow, Pauline; a stepson, Frederick Schmidt, of Philadelphia, and four grandchildren. He was a member of Local 1, IUMSWA, the Polish-American Citizens club, Group 160, Polish National Alliance, and the Holy Name Society of St. Joseph’s R. C. Church.

Solemn high requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10 a. m. Thursday in St. Joseph’s Church Tenth and Mechanic streets. Friends will meet at 9.30 a. m. in the funeral home at 1311 South Tenth street, where they may call Wednesday night. Burial will be in St Joseph’s cemetery, Chews Landing.

Fireman Chester Gedrich, of 1212 Morton st., Camden, who finished first in a recent Civil Service examination, will be appointed a full captain at 10 A.M. Thursday, by Acting Public Safety Director Edwin A. Bedell.

Bedell also will present a citation to Fireman Harrison W. Mac Neir, of Rescue Squad 1, for his efforts to save 15-year-old Donna Bender, who drowned last May 21, in Cooper River.

Gedrich who has been Acting Capt. of Truck 1, probably will be assigned to Engine Co. 2, at headquarters. Fire Chief Edward R. MacDowell said Tuesday. His salary as a captain will be $6575.

Pays $25 Fine to Escape 30-Day Term; Suspended Sentences Given 5

Charged with operating a craps game, Joseph Auletto, 40, of 909 South Fourth street, was fined $25, or 30 days, when arraigned Saturday before Police Judge Lewis Liberman. Auletto entered a guilty plea and paid the fine.

Auletto and five other men were arrested when detectives raided the former’s poolroom. Detective Sergeant Louis Shaw, who led the raid, confiscated a craps table cover and several pair of dice, and $3 on the table.

All of the others were given 30-day suspended sentences. They are Lawrence Palese, 22, of 420 Lansdowne avenue; Salvido Mignona, 25, of 630 South Fourth street; Joseph Bailey, 32, of 1354 Morton street; Louis Asiudo, 24, of 901 South Fourth street, and Mazzarino De Vecchio, 45, of 323 Line street.

Detectives Thomas Murphy, August Fortune and Clarence Arthur were in the raiding party. They said they found the men grouped about a pool table over which had been laid the “craps cover.”

Auletto was charged with being the proprietor of a gambling establishment under a city ordinance and the others with being material witnesses.

A 15-year-old boy was caught by firemen when he tried to flee after crashing an automobile into a large overhangin [sic] door on No. 9 Firehouse on 27th st. near Federal shortly after 5 p. m. Sunday.

Ptl. John Troutman identified the young motorist as Thomas Sepicato, of the 1300 block Morton st.

According to Troutman, Sepicato was driving south on 27th st. when the car door opposite the driver’s side opened. In trying to close the door, Sepicato lost control of the car and it crashed into the firehouse door, breaking several panes of glass in the door and narrowly missed plowing into a hugh [sic] hook and ladder truck parked inside the firehouse.

After the crash, the boy jumped out of the car and fled, according to police, but was captured a half-block away by Laddermen Phillip B. Stinger and Edward DeHart and an unidentified taxi driver.

William F. Bosset, 19, of the 1200 block Chase st., owner of the car, said he had asked Sepicato to get some steak sandwiches and had “jokingly” tossed him the keys to the car but did not “expect” the boy to drive.

Sepicato, who was turned over to the custody of his parents, was given a ticket for careless driving and driving without a license. Bosset was given a ticket for allowing an unlicensed driver to operate his car.

Youth Accused by Child of Luring Into House is Held for Trial

After little 10-year-old Mamie Zimmie, 1181 Morton Street, finished telling a story of how she had been lured into a house, and had escaped by leaping to the ground from a porch roof, Police Judge Bernard Bertman this morning held Samuel Osler, 18 years old, 1450 Mount Ephraim Avenue in $2500 bail for the Grand Jury.

In default young Osler was committed to the county jail.

Facing a courtroom, crowded with spectators, and showing no sign of fear or excitement, Mamie, while on the witness stand, turned toward the youth, six years her senior, and declared, “That’s the boy who tried to hurt me.”

Detective Frank Truax testified that he arrested Osler yesterday afternoon in his home at the Mt. Ephraim Avenue address, after the Zimmie girl had accused him.

On the stand and the object of the stare of those who packed the courtroom, Mamie dramatically recited the events of yesterday afternoon which led to her leap from the porch roof and her removal to the West Jersey Hospital, cut, bruised and lame.

The girl’s leap had been witnessed by Frank Clark, of 1006 South Ninth Street who picked her up and took her to the hospital. She was treated for cuts and bruises and allowed to go home. Her father, William Zimmie, testified that his daughter had complained of pains in her back, all night. On the stand in his own defense, Osler said that Mamie had followed him into the house and up the stairs. “When I went into the bathroom to get some money, she jumped out of the window, I did not know her,” he declared.

New Captain Named

Seven of the 14 vacancies in the city’s fire department were filled yesterday and a new fire captain named by Public Safety Director Keith Kauffman.

Robert Olesiewicz, 47, was promoted from fireman to captain. He will be assigned to Ladder Company 1 at fire headquarters, 3rd and Arch Streets. Olesiewicz, who lives at 1194 Morton Street, has been with the fire department 15 years.

The seven new firemen sworn in yesterday were George C. Kurtyan, 21, of 2812 Hayes Avenue; Robert B. Shaw, 26, of 455 Morse Street; Richard C. Francesconi, 23, of 506 Rand Street; Nelson L. Savidge Jr., 25, of 2002 Howell Street; Thomas M. Prosinsik, 21, of 1381 Kenwood Avenue; Michael C. LaFrance, 22, of 488A Rand Street, and Kenneth Penn, 21, of 1773 Norris Street.

Fire Chief Edward Michalak said the new men will have a six-week training course before being assigned to various companies throughout the city.

He said the new additions will bring the fire department up to 180 men. The full complement is 187.

Alfred L. Sayres, 86, widely-known Camden County banker, is in critical condition at West Jersey Hospital.

Sayres suffered a stroke while visiting an old friend, Vincent Razyckowski [sic], head of the Newport Bottling Works, 1101 Morton st., Thursday afternoon and was taken to the hospital by a police ambulance. Sayres had been making business calls.

Sayres, who lives at 811 White Horse pike, Oaklyn, earlier in the day had been in the Camden Trust Co. on business and talked with Sylvan G. Fletcher, vice president and treasurer of the bank, and chatted with Razyckowski [sic], who had been talking with Fletcher.

Sayres, a former Camden City councilman under the councilmanic form of government, had been street commissioner of Camden.

He organized and was president of the Parkside Trust Co. in 1918 and which had its banking quarters at Kaighns and Haddon aves. and was merged in 1927 with the West Jersey Trust Co., when Sayres became vice president of the combined banks.

Other members of the Parkside Bank organizing group were Albert S. Woodruff, counsel; William C. Davis, a baker; Mark Bulifant, a realtor; Dr. Oris [sic] W. Saunders, later Camden County physician; Dr. William E. Miller, of 8th and Walnut sts., and O. O. Phillips.
