Pulaski Street

Camden Street

Introduction

Pulaski Street runs south from opposite 1141 Sheridan Street to Van Hook Street. The street is named for Casimir Pulaski, the Polish military commander called one of the fathers of American cavalry, who was granted honorary United States citizenship and was mortally wounded at the Siege of Savannah, Georgia, in 1779. Pulaski Street first appears in Camden city directories in 1917. Twenty-one homes were standing on the street, all occupied in 1947. As of July 2012, twenty structures remained standing.

Mrs. Cecelia H. Vogt

Mrs. Cecelia H. Vogt, 56, died Friday in her home, 1623 Pulaski st. She was born in Camden, was a lifelong resident, a member of the Rosary Society of St. Joseph’s R. C. Church, South Camden, and was employed by the Consolidated Cigar Co. for six years.

Surviving are her husband, Frank; four sons, Frank Jr., and Edmund, both of Camden; Daniel, Mt. Ephraim, and Raymond, Pennsauken; a daughter, Mrs. Loretta Piklo, Camden; her mother, Mrs. Amelia Kopec, Camden; three brothers, Walter Kopec, Philadelphia; Casimir and Leon Kopec, both of Camden; four sisters, Mrs. Catherine Templin, Mrs. Francis Borucki and Miss Stella Kopec, all of Camden, and Mrs. Mary Cymbor, Philadelphia, and seven grandchildren.

Solemn requiem high Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 9 a. m. in St. Joseph’s R. C. Church, 10th and Mechanic sts. Relatives and friends will meet at 8.30 a. m. in the residence, 1623 Pulaski st., where friends may call Tuesday night. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Chews Landing, under the direction of the Ciechanowski Funeral Home of Camden.

Frank Vogt Sr.

Frank Vogt Sr., 64, of 1623 Pulaski st., died Monday in St. Mary’s Hospital, Philadelphia. He was a resident of Camden 62 years, and worked at the New York Shipyard from 1915 to 1954. He was a member of the Polish-American Citizens Club of Camden.

Surviving are four sons, Frank Jr. and Edmund, of Camden, Daniel, of Mt. Ephraim, and Raymond, of Pennsauken; a daughter, Mrs. Loretta H. Pikle, of Haddonfield; two brothers, Albert, of Camden, and John, of Maple Shade; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Ignaczewski, of Camden, and Mrs. Katherine Rybacki, of Philadelphia, and ten grandchildren.

Relatives and friends will meet Thursday at 8.30 a. m. in the Ciechanowski Funeral Home, 1309 S. 10th st. Requiem high Mass will be celebrated at 9 a. m. in St. Joseph’s Church, 10th and Mechanic sts. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday night. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Chews Landing.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral on Thursday morning at 8.30 o’clock at the Ciechanowski Funeral Home, 1309 S. 10th st., Camden. Solemn Requiem High Mass at St. Joseph’s Church, 10th and Mechanic sts., Camden, at 9 a. m. Interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Chews Landing. Friends may call Wednesday evening.

2-Story Fall Injures Whitman Park Roofer

John Weadership, 54, of 1630 Pulaski st., a roofer, was injured Thursday when he fell from the roof of a two-story house on 5th st. near Royden.

Weadership was admitted to West Jersey Hospital suffering internal injuries and a possible fracture of the left ankle. He was taken to the hospital by police.

Walter Spaeth, operator of G. F. Spaeth and Sons, 513 Benson st., who employs Weadership, said the workman was leaning against a wooden frame while holding a pulley to haul materials to the roof, when the frame broke.
