11th Street

Eleventh Street ran north, from Market Street all the way through to Pearl Street. Over time North 11th Street was erased, block by block, until all that remains is a segment between Penn and Linden Streets, with six occupied rowhomes.

South 11th Street is somewhat of an artificial construct, being the name given to the connecting road that runs south from Federal Street then elbows east and north, carrying it over the Admiral Wilson Boulevard and terminating at Federal Street north of the Cooper River. At one time it ran underneath the railroad tracks to the front of the National Guard Armory which became Camden's Public Works building. There are no and to my knowledge have never been any South 11th Street addresses.

Meiler Tried for Selling Liquor to Minors

Philadelphia Inquirer —

131 North 11th Street served as a bar and/or liquor store as early as 1883 until it was closed and razed.

A former volunteer fireman and at one time a member of the Camden Fire Department, Henry Frost's real avocation and to some extent occupation was as a dog fighter. His bulldog, “Whitey,” won numerous fights and a good deal of money for Henry Frost, both in Camden and in other large cities in the northeast. In the spring of 1883 the dog was stolen, and Henry Frost began drinking to excess. As a former member of the Weccacoe Fire Company No. 2, Henry Frost realized a bit of money when their old firehouse at 503 Benson Street was sold in 1883. With the money he received he opened a small saloon at North 11th and Carpenter Streets, where he died on December 28, 1883. Henry Frost was survived by his wife Sarah, who operated the business for about a year, appearing in the 1884–1885 City Directory as “Frost Sarah, liquors, 11th and Carpenter.” She sold the business to John U. Meiler.

Philadelphia Inquirer, June 1, 1887 — John Meiler tried for selling liquor to minors

John Miller [Meiler], a saloon keeper, of Eleventh and Carpenter streets, was tried and convicted before Mayor Pintt yesterday of selling liquor to minors. In default of $50 fine and costs, he was committed to the city jail for ten days. See also: Jesse W. Pratt.

Latest Haul Made by the Law and Order League in Camden

There was another round-up of Camden county liquor dealers yesterday. Complaints were made against fourteen persons by George B. M. Adams, an agent of the Law and Order League.

Those for whom warrants were issued are: Walter S. Hubbs and wife, charged with running a speak-easy in Pensauken township; John Keefe, of Fogarty avenue and Carman street; Thomas Farnham, Ninth and Lawrence streets; John Daly, 321 North Seventh street; William Gallagher, 106 Kaighn avenue; Charles E. Bakley, 2318 Federal street; John H. Carroll, Third and Cherry streets; John H. Jones, 517 North Front street; George W. Hoskins, 505 Main street; William Convery, Eleventh and Carpenter streets; John Opfer, Front and Pearl streets; Joan [sic] Dugan, Front and Pearl streets; Michael J. Walsh, 503 Federal street.

All entered bail before Justice Schultz for hearings to-day except Opfer, Gallagher and Walsh. The latter was locked up and the other two sent word they would appear this morning. The complaints will at once be submitted to the grand jury.

John Lester Dyer obituary, Camden Courier-Post, March 23, 1938

John Lester Dyer, 48, pensioned fireman, died yesterday in West Jersey Hospital after an illness of several years. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Friday at the home, 139 North Eleventh street. Burial will be private. Mr. Dyer, attached to headquarters company before his retirement about two years ago, is survived by his widow, Mrs. Anna Ironfield Dyer, and several children.

Louis Ferrell, a carpenter, of 142 North Eleventh street, Camden, fell a distance of twenty feet while at work at the new Sixth Regiment Armory yesterday. He was treated for a broken heel at the Cooper Hospital.

Chief Presents Six Resignations at Meeting of Council Commission.

MERTZ IS CAPTAIN IN WHITSELL’S PLACE

Camden’s Fire Department has been hard hit by the call of the shipyards and death. The report of Fire Chief Peter B. Carter presented last night at the meeting of the Fire Committee of City Council showed six resignations, two deaths and one vacancy from the draft.

The resignations follows [sic]: Louis Neuman, No. 3 Truck Company; George H. Pursglove, No. 7 Engine Company; Roy De Haven, Julius Hubert and Harry W. Stone, No. 3 Truck Company, and Lieutenant Joseph Sparks, No. 7 Engine Company.

Deaths reported were Captain Samuel Whitzell, of No. 1 Engine Company, and William Elberson, of Headquarters. William Schucher, of No. 4, was drafted into the Army.

To take the place of Captain Whitzell, Lieutenant Walter Mertz, of the same company, was appointed captain, and Horace Kerns was made lieutenant. The following appointments were made by the Fire Committee: Robert L. Knox, 822 Division street, to fill place of Julius Hunbert [sic]; Allen Palmer, 120 North Eleventh street, for vacancy of Louis Neuman; Clarence Pursglove, 751 Mt. Vernon street, taking place of his brother George; Anthony Paradise, 658 South Second street, filling place of Roy De Haven; Harry B. Maxwell, 422 North Sixth street, for vacancy of Harry W. Stone; Robert Welsh, 512 Borton street, vacancy of William Schucher, and William Vile, 570 Carman street, to fill place of Captain Whitzell.

The American La France Company was awarder [sic] the contract to furnish a new two-in-one motor apparatus for $10,000.

A petition from members of the Firemen’s Pension Fund asked that the rule of ten years’ apprenticeship be abolished in view of the wages paid men employed in other industries. The petition requests that all men in the department be placed on full salary at once. The petition will be presented to City Council.

Thirty-seven candidates have passed the Civil Service test for fireman in the Camden City fire department. Thirty-two of those who qualified are former service men and three of them, disabled veterans, were placed at the top of the list under the preference given by law.

Joseph T. Hackett, of 158 Branch Village, is listed first, Owen D. Gale, 320 Marlton avenue, second and August L. Johnson, 916½ Chestnut street, third.

The salary on Jan. 1 will begin at $2400 and reach a maximum of $3160 after four years.

Funeral services for Mrs. Jennie Schultz, 67, wife of Charles Schultz, a retired Camden city fireman and mother of William Schultz, a city policeman, will be held Thursday, 2 p. m., at the home of her sister, Mrs. Charles Ziegler, 163 Wiggan street, Mahanoy City, Pa.

Mrs. Schultz died Sunday at her home, 214 North Eleventh street. Another son surviving is Charles Schultz, Jr. Burial will be in the German Protestant Cemetery at Mahanoy City.

Man Jailed as Gambler After Fight in House - Camden Courier-Post, March 22, 1938

Arrested on a warrant charging he permitted gambling in his home, William Lloyd, 38, 756 Pennsylvania avenue, was fined $25 in police court yesterday.

Lloyd’s arrest followed a hearing the previous day, when Robert Lee, 29, 226 North Eleventh street, was sentenced to two months in the county jail because he struck Charles Scott, 20 South Eighth street, on the head with a meat cleaver, after an argument over a gambling game at Lloyd’s home.

Department Rolls Now Total 176

Six new members of the Camden Fire Department yesterday were sworn into office by City Clerk Odorisio at ceremonies in the office of Director of Public Safety Kauffman.

The men and one other, to be sworn in Dec. 7, complete the present list of eligibles for the fire department. Kauffman said he will request the Civil Service Commission to set dates for new examinations for fire candidates. The city now enrolls 176 men in the department.

The new members are Daniel J. Sheppard, 22, of 1340 Dayton st.; Joseph W. Convery, 27, of 157 Eutaw ave.; John R. Hertz, 23, of 2916 Congress rd.; Albert E. Cullum [sic] Jr., 28, of 2409 Howell st.; David W. Sanders, 31, of 821 Line st., and Albert Jones, 24, of 220 N. 11th st. The seventh man is Daniel O. Mulvey, 24, of 23 N. 25th st.

The men will be assigned to the fire training school for one month and for one week at a fire school at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.

Camden Courier-Post, March 22, 1938 — Snatched Purse, Jailed

George Gibbs, 39, 311 North Eleventh street, was sentenced to thirty days in the county jail yesterday when accused of stealing a purse from Mrs. Susie Lovett, Penn street near Tenth, after attending a party at her home.

Mrs. Lovett said she did not wish to press the charge, but Judge Bertman refused to entertain the request.

The Rev. Lloyd A. Burrus, pastor of the Zion Baptist Church, will officiate the double ring ceremony. Miss Elizabeth Johnson and Shelton Lee, will serve as attendants.

Others in the wedding party will be Miss Anna Mitchell, Miss Barbara Cooper, and Mrs. Samuel Mitchell, bridesmaids; Noble Davis, Richard Lee and Lester Kee, brother of the bride-elect, ushers.

Three-year-old Aloma Butler will be flower girl, and Jerome Kee, brother of the bride, will serve as ring-bearer. Mrs. Alec Pritchett will sing “O Promise Me,” accompanied by Mrs. Doshua Lambert, who will also play the wedding march.

Several Firemen Hurt; Oil Plant and Homes Are Menaced

BLAZE WORST IN 18 MONTHS

Fire swept the wholesale store of Antrim Hardware Company, 1514 and 1516 Federal street last night, damaged the stock to the extent of $100,000, injured several firemen, menaced homes and the plant of the Standard Oil Company opposite. It was the first three-alarm fire in Camden since January, 1937.

One of the firemen, Ralph Bingaman, of Truck Company No. 1, was cut severely on the right hand and foot by falling glass and went to the Cooper Hospital. Another hoseman, Ray Smith, of headquarters, also was cut on the right hand but stuck to his fire fighting after his wounds were dressed.

Huge choking billows of smoke that rolled over the fighters balked them several times in their efforts to check the fire, but they remained at their posts and finally subdued the blaze after a battle of several hours.

Spread Rapidly

Chief John H. Lennox declared the fire started midway on the first floor from some unknown cause and spread so rapidly before its discovery efforts of the firemen were greatly hindered. Louis Gold, proprietor of the Federal Automobile Company, which adjoins the Antrim place, discovered the blaze and sent in an alarm at 7 p. m.

He then telephoned to Councilman E. Hulings Antrim, of Merchantville, treasurer of the concern, who raced to the fire, together with his mother, Mrs. Elwood Antrim, widow of the founder of the firm. Later B. Frank Antrim, president of the firm, arrived. The members of the family conferred and decided to reopen today their other store at Twenty-sixth and Federal streets, and to secure if possible an unoccupied floor of a chain store building to carry on the business. The stock, according to Antrim, was fully insured.

The firm was created on December 1, 1889, and had made arrangements to celebrate its golden anniversary. Mrs. Antrim, mother of the treasurer, stated she had half the anniversary number ready for publication “but the first fire we ever had has ruined all that now.”

Smashes Windows

When Gold, accompanied by his son, Marvin, discovered the fire, the latter smashed in two front windows on the first floor to permit the smoke to roll and and [sic] to prevent an explosion inside, he said. Meanwhile, Leroy Garrison, who lives at 50 South Twenty-fourth street, was driving past in his automobile.

He saw smoke rolling upward from the first floor and ran to the rear of the structure and threw open the door to permit the smoke to roll free at the rear.

Eight minutes after the first alarm was sounded Chief Lennox ordered a second, then a third at 7.33 p. m. Eight engines and two hook and ladder trucks responded and the fight began to keep the flames from spreading in the neighborhood. With the wind blowing north, the tanks of the oil company across the street seemed threatened, but the interior of the structure was bulked with two firewalls which held and gave the firemen a chance to get into action and beat down the flames.

Paint, chemicals and tar paper stored on the second floor made a dense, choking smoke that completely concelead [sic] the neighborhood and the hundreds of spectators that thronged the vicinity to watch the fire. Two tenants in nearby houses, Miss Agnes Mitchell and Mrs. Roy Dilks, 72, living in 1510 and 1508, respectively, were unaware of the fire right next door until the police sent them to safety.

Miss Mitchell said she was in the shed in the rear of her home and the first she heard of the fire was when a policeman ordered her to get out.

Refused to Leave

Mrs. Dilks, alone in the house at the time, refused to leave. She told the police she didn’t want to go, because the family had lived there but a month and her relatives were away. Finally she was urged to depart and did, finding refuge with Mrs. Albert Bowne, whose husband runs a printing shop a few doors below.

When Councilman Antrim arrived on the scene he attempted to rescue records of the firm which he said could never be replaced. Five times he entered the smoking building and five times he was turned back by the firemen.

Finally two firemen, Andrew Ballantine, who drives Chief Lennox, and Ladderman John Strauss, of Truck Company No. 4, forged their way through the dense smoke and retrieved the records.

Antrim fixed his damages from smoke and water at $100,000 which he said was the amount of stock in the building. Mrs. Antrim, his mother, stood under an umbrella near the burning building, and refused to go back.

“We’ll open tomorrow,” said the energetic woman, “and not let this bother us. This firm was created in 1889 when Hulings, my son, was four, and B. Frank Antrim, now president, and myself ran the businees [sic] and we’re not going to let this get us down, you bet.”

Antrim said he was the last person to leave the building at 5 p. m., and everything appeared to be all right then. The burglar alarm with which the building is equipped did not sound, so Antrim says no one could have entered the building after he departed.

After Engine Company No. 10 was sent home the apparatus was sideswiped by a traveling sandwich wagon, owned and driven by Emido Martelli, of 1315 Thurman street, at Eleventh street and Newton avenue.

Martelli’s wife and 25-months- old son were aboard the wagon at the time but none was injured. Police took Martelli to City Hall where he was asked for a statement as to the accident. According to the persons on the scene, Martelli was driving on Eleventh street when the engine came along Newton avenue, with its siren open.

The wagon driver did not seem to pay attention to the screams of the whistle and continued, the front of his car grazing the side of the apparatus.

When Engine Company No. 9, at Twenty-first and Federal streets, the first engine to respond to the alarm, reached the hydrant the firemen found an automobile parked there, and locked. They had to push the car out of the way, in order to get a hose to the hydrant.

Chief Lennox said the last time the department received a third alarm was when fire gutted the store of the McCrory Company at Broadway and Kaighn avenue.

A 16-year-old boy was drowned in the Cooper river, near Eleventh and Linden streets, today after he jumped into the water, apparently to escape the heat.

The boy, William Bush, of 431 Riley street, was brought to Cooper hospital, where physicians used artificial respiration in an effort to save his life. Dr. Llewelyn Hunsicker pronounced the boy dead.

According to police, Bush, who could not swim, had been playing on the bank with two companions, Thomas Brown, 16, of 320 Washington street, and Raymond Hickman, 15, of 318 Washington street.

Police said the three decided to take a dip i nthe [sic] river. The Bush boy asked the others to watch him while he jumped in. He then leaped from the bank and immediately began bobbing up and down.

At first the other two thought Bush was joking, but soon realized that he was in trouble. Brown leaped in after him, but Bush was frantic by then and drove Brown away with his flailing arms.

Forced to Quit Effort

Another boy, Dennis Conway, 16, of 717 Fern street, who was swimming nearby, approached Bush and tried to grab him, but Conway also was forced to abandon the effort to save Bush when the latter thrashed at him.

Conway then shouted to one of the others to call the police. The boy was forced to run several hundred yards to the Scott-Smith Cadillac Co. to make the telephone call.

Fire Rescue Squad No. 1, at Fifth and Arch streets, under the direction of Battalion Chief Harry Wagner, administered artificial respiration until the arrival of Dr. Hunsicker, brought from Cooper hospital by police.

Orders Boy to Hospital

Dr. Hunsicker expressed belief Bush was already dead, but ordered the boy taken to the hospital for still further attempts to revive him.

The Weather Bureau reported a high of 86 today at 5 p. m., but a gentle southerly breeze brought fairly pleasant conditions in this area. The thermometer will drop to about 66 tonight, but will rise to 86 by tomorrow afternoon. The latest prediction is fair and quite warm weather tonight and tomorrow.

A Nineteen-Year-Old Youth Taken Into Custody on a Serious Charge

HE TELLS A DIFFERENT STORY

Charged with the rape of a 14-year-old girl, Louis Mayer, 19 years old, who lives near Twelfth and Federal streets, was held without bail by Recorder Stackhouse in Police Court this morning, to await extradition papers from the Pennsylvania authorities, where the alleged crime was committed.

The girl in the case, as exclusively told in Saturday’s “Courier,” is Katherine Corkhill, of 90 Alberta street. The girl disappeared from her home nearly two weeks ago. Word was received that she was seen in the company of three men on several occasions. On Friday night, a letter was received by the parents that the girl was being detained in a house in Philadelphia against her will and to keep her from leaving the house, her clothes had been taken away from her by her jailers.

The Philadelphia police were notified and the girl was released. The names of her capturers were turned over to the police of both Philadelphia and Camden.

On Saturday afternoon Policeman Howard Smith accompanied by Special Policeman Russell, of the Twenty-third and Brown streets station, Philadelphia, saw Mayer, whose name ‘had been’ furnished them by the girl, at Eleventh and Market streets, Camden, and placed him under arrest.

The boy tells an entirely different story from the girl. He declares that the girl came to him and told him that she had been “fired out of the house” and asked him if he wouldn’t take her away from Camden. He says that he took her to a house on Brown street near Eighth and that she was at liberty to come and go as she pleased. Their actions, he declared, had been agreed to by both.

Was a Prominent Member of City Council and Well-Known in Industrial and Lodge Circles

Death yesterday made another call on Camden’s official family. Councilman John Carmany expired at his home, 772 Pine street, after a three weeks’ siege with Bright’s disease. As a member of the Water Committee of City Council, Mr. Carmany was intimately associated with Chief Robert Hollingsworth, whose death occurred just a week ago yesterday. He had served seven years in the city law-making body and there yet remained another year of his fourth consecutive term as one of the representatives of the Seventh ward. Before being elected to Council, Mr. Carmany was a member of the Board of Education for several years, and in both capacities he was attentive and painstaking.

Succeeding his father in the ownership of the Wissahickon Dye Works, at Eighth and Cherry streets, Mr. Carmany two years ago moved his plant to a new building he erected at Eleventh and Pine streets. He was also engaged as a cotton broker on quite an extensive scale. Born in Lebanon county, Pa., 51 years ago, Mr. Carmany came to Camden at the age of 14 and had since resided there. He was a member of Philadelphia Lodge No. 9, F. and A. M.; Camden Elks, Moose, Seventh Ward Republican Club and Camp No. 50, P. O. S. of A., of Roxborough, Pa. He is survived by a widow and three children, one of whom is Mrs. Howard Justice.

President of City Council Hewitt last night named Messrs. Broome, Gordon, Read, Francis, De Unger and Kensinger as a committee to make arrangements for the city officials to attend the funeral, which takes place on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The committee held a meeting at the City Hall last night.

Capt. P. Scott Franklin, Officer of No. 1 Company, Victim of Stroke

J. Scott Franklin, junior captain at No. 1 fire house, Fifth and Arch streets, died at his home, Eleventh and Carpenter streets, yesterday. He was 62, and had been attached to the station for more than 22 years.

He died suddenly of a stroke. He had been injured in an accident several months ago, and while continuing at his duties, had been complaining of illness.

His wife has been seriously ill for the past week. According to his mates at the fire house he had been greatly worried over her condition. She had not yet been told of his death late last night, as it was feared that the shock would be too great for her.

He was one of the veterans of the fire department and had won his way up to captain from the ranks. He figured in the fighting of several large fires.
