Introduction

Phil Cohen

Jefferson Street, which officially, as far as city and county land, tax, and title records go is Jefferson Avenue, runs from the Delaware River east to South 10th Street, one block north of Chelton Avenue. At one time Jefferson Street carried straight through, however, the construction of I-676 interrupted Jefferson Street and wiped out all structures east of the railroad tracks to Master Street.

Street Ends Sought for City

Philadelphia Inquirer, February 4, 1912 — Street ends along the Delaware River sought for the city by City Solicitor E.G.C. Bleakly

Further action was taken yesterday by City Solicitor Bleakly toward acquiring street ends, now occupied by corporations or individuals. He recently won for the city in connection with the Jefferson street Wharf against an electric company. In the suits begun yesterday in the Supreme Court the ends of Jackson, Vanhook, Jasper, Emerald, Viola and Winslow are sought. This is all in the same locality as Jefferson street and takes in the river front south of Line Ditch.

Accused of Shooting at Policeman — Declared to have frightened children by firing a revolver at them, Charles Kabanski, thirty-nine years old, of 885 Jefferson street, not only put up a terrific fight with Policeman Johnson when an attempt was made to arrest him, but also discharged the weapon at him. A large crowd followed and Kabanski was overpowered. He said he had carried the gun for self-protection. Recorder Stackhouse gave him three months in jail.

Lambert Held for Robbery

Must Answer Two Charges—New Clue in the Kairer Case.

Theodore Lambert, the negro first arrested on suspicion of being the murderer of Baker William G. Kairer, and later identified as being connected with two other robberies, was given a hearing before Police Justice Paul, in Camden, yesterday. He was committed in default of $1000 bail on the charge of breaking into Mrs. Mary Manlove's residence, 2000 Broadway, on the night of August 9 last. Mrs. Manlove has recognized him as the man who raised her window and frightened her into a swoon.

Lambert will also have to answer the charge of breaking into Mrs. Francis Hutt's residence, 908 Jefferson avenue, and stealing a watch. The police still hope to connect him with the Kairer murder.

They have made no additional arrests in connection with the latter case, but are said to be working on a new clue.
