Lawrence Street

Lawrence Street is an east-west street that runs between Cooper Street and Penn Street. It originally ran from North 3rd Street through to North 11th Street, only interrupted by railroad tracks in the 900 block. At some point between 1906 and 1912 another block was added to Lawrence Street, when Maple Street, which ran at an angle from Lawrence at North 11th Street to 12th Street, was renamed. Expansion of the Ben Franklin Bridge plaza and the construction of Interstate 676 eliminated the 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000 and much of the 1100 blocks. Two buildings belonging to Mt. Calvary Baptist Church are located on the 1100 Block of Lawrence Street.

Miss Catherine C. McGovern, of 331 Lawrence street, daughter of the late Francis and Mary McGovern, died at her home Saturday after long illness. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Josephine Blake, of Collingswood, and Mrs. Earl Mortimer, of the Lawrence street address. Services will be at 8 a. m. Thursday at the residence with Solemn Requiem Mass at 9 a. m. in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

JOHN E. MORTIMER

John E. Mortimer, 72, of 315 Lawrence st., died Friday in Laurel View Nursing Home, Mount Laurel. A veteran of World War I, he was a retired contractor and builder.

Surviving are his wife Mary F.; a brother, Orrin R. of Haddon Heights; and a sister, Mrs. Bertha Pack of Riverton.

Friends will meet at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Robert J. Blake Funeral Home, 226 Collings ave., Collingswood. Requiem high Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Broadway and Market st. There will be a viewing Monday night in the funeral home. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Mrs. Mortimer, who died Monday, is survived by a sister, Mrs. Josephine A. Blake of Collingswood.

Maurice Daly, a boy, of 422 Lawrence street, Camden, was arrested yesterday on a charge of buncoing a slot machine belonging to Samuel Hibbert, of 816 Market street. Maurice had a pocket full of circular iron discs the size of pennies. With these he nearly emptied the machine of its chewing gum.

Judge Refuses Alibi Offered That One ‘Drowned Grief’ in Friend’s Death

Two drunken drivers were given the alternative yesterday of Police Judge Lewis Liberman of paying fines of $200 or spending 90 days in jail.

They are Samuel Boykin, 42, of 514 Lawrence street, and George Kendig, 41, of 2332 Broadway.

Boykin was arrested Monday at Broadway and Federal streets by Patrolmen William Stibi and Gus Rhiem, after they noticed his driving in a zig-zag manner.

Boykin pleaded not guilty, but admitted having “taken a drink to drown my sorrow over the death of a friend.”

“There is no question in my mind that you were drunk,” Judge Liberman told him, “because I have personal knowledge of it. I saw you in my office shortly after your arrest.”

Kendig, who was arrested last Thursday after his car was in collision with another car, was first arraigned yesterday, but the hearing was postponed to permit police to make further investigation.

Yesterday Sergeant Walter Mattison and Patrolman Maurice DiNiculo testified they were on duty when Kendig was brought in to police headquarters and that he was under the influence of liquor. Kendig pleaded not guilty but admitted having had a “few glasses of wine.”

Both sentences carry with them automatic suspension of drivers’ licenses for one year.

FRANCIS D. CAMPION

Francis D. Campion, 61, of 705 Lawrence st., died Saturday in Burdette-Tomlin Memorial Hospital, Cape May Court House. He was visiting a daughter, Mrs. William Kane, of Wildwood. Mr. Campion was a machine adjuster with Campbell Soup Co.

Also surviving are his wife, Amanda; a son Francis Jr., of Camden; a daughter, Mrs. Harry Emory, of Rochester, N. Y.; two sisters, Mrs. Marie Crocker, of Norristown, Pa., and Mrs. Catherine Stevens, of Salem, Mass. and seven grandchildren.

Friends may call Tuesday night at the B. C. Schroeder Funeral Home, 715 Cooper st. Services and burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Thrown against the windshield when an automobile in which he was riding crashed against a telegraph pole at Broadway and Berkley street, Camden, John S. O’Grady, 42 years old, of Seventh and Lawrence streets, sustained severe lacerations of the face and head. He was taken to Cooper Hospital in a passing machine. O’Grady told the police that the car in which he was riding was driven by James Powell, of East Camden.

The name of James J. Quirk, 33 years old, of 830 Lawrence street, was among the wounded in yesterday’s casualty list from France. He was with Company E, 114th Regulars, and went into the army with the old Third Regiment. He was last heard from in July, when he wrote that he was in the best of health and anxious to get a shot at the Huns.

Husband Sent to Jail in Non-Support Case

Camden Courier-Post —

A husband of less than a year yesterday was sent to county jail in default of a $350 bond which was asked in police court to insure the payment of a $6 weekly support order for his wife and child.

Ernest Reed, 19, of 317 North Third Street, was arrested on complaint of his wife, Louise, 18, of 906 Lawrence Street. Mrs. Reed testified she was married in August, 1932, and that her husband lived with her two weeks. Her baby was born two months ago, she said, and her husband has given her only $4.25 since Christmas.

Reed said he has been out of work and unable to support his family.

SEEK MAN LURING CHILD

Camden’s police are looking for a man who lured the 6-year-old daughter of Elmer Burkett, of 1009 Penn street, Camden, into a vacant house at 1009 Lawrence street. The little girl was found by a physician to have been badly bruised, although no serious consequences are apprehended.

It was by means of pennies that the little one was lured into the house where her cries attracted neighbors. In the excitement the man escaped. He is described as being about 30 years old, smooth-shaven and wearing dark clothes.

When a scuffling sound on the shed roof at the home of Mrs. Earl Richards, of 1012 Lawrence street, aroused her sleeping children yesterday they awakened in time to see a man climbing through the back window. Then he proceeded to light numerous matches, several of which dropped on the floor. Mrs. Richards was aroused by the cries of her children and when she found the prowler rambling about upstairs she summoned Policeman Deith, who placed the man under arrest. Before Recorder Stackhouse he gave the name of James Giberson and said he was trying to find the home of his wife, from whom he was separated. He was sentenced to a month in jail.

Williams displayed a scar which he said took 16 stitches to close. Jones said the argument started over his housekeeper, and he only cut Williams in self-defense.

SEEKS GIRL; DISAPPEARANCE MADE HER MOTHER INSANE

Back of a request made by Mrs. Cora Randles, 1021 Lawrence street, Camden, to the police yesterday to locate her sister, Marietta B. Ryan, 23 years old, there is a tragedy involving the death of her mother, Mrs. Cora Ryan, in the insane asylum at Blackwood, N. J., on Friday.

Mrs. Randles said her sister eloped on March 1 with a married man, since which time nothing has been heard of them, although they are believed to be either in this city or Port Richmond, N. J.

This elopement made Mrs. Randles, the sister, seriously ill, and the mother, worried by the illness of one daughter and the disappearance of the other, became deranged, and it was necessary to place her in the asylum, where she died.

Another case of anthrax developed yesterday in Camden, the sufferer being John Ahearn, aged 17 years, of 1034 Lawrence street, who is employed as a leather worker in a Camden kid plant. His chances for recovery are considered good. The disease killed one man in Camden this week. Harry Cramford, aged 37 years, of 741 Woodland avenue.

Arsonists Burn Church, 2 Houses In North Camden

Police and fire officials today are sifting through the remains of a church and two unoccupied houses which burned last night in North Camden. The fires are attributed to arsonists.

Badly damaged by fire are the Mount Zion Pentecostal Church, 915 N. Front st., and vacant houses at 1133 Lawrence st. and 906 N. Front st., according to Fire District Chief Saponare.

Fire Insp. John Gaffney, who is conducting the investigation, said the fires were “definitely set” and that all three followed the same pattern.

“We’ve got one slim lead and are definitely certain that they are the work of arsonists,” Gaffney said.

Saponare asked city detectives and Gaffney to investigate the blaze that destroyed the interior, parts of the exterior and contents of the church.

Prior to the 11:30 p. m. church fire, others were reported in the vacant houses at 5:45 and at 10:20 p. m.

Saponare said firemen found trash burning on the second floor at the Lawrence st. fire and at the 905 N. Front st. fire, the rear shed was nearly completely destroyed. Investigation showed that the church fire started in the rest room and it is believed that it had been burning for some time before being discovered.

Leather Mill Labor Troubles Result in Court Action

HELD FOR STRIKE RIOT

There was an echo of the labor troubles at the Castle Kid Company and the Keystone Leather Company in the Camden Police Court before Recorder Stackhouse yesterday when Joseph Copvinski, 29 years old, of 1053 Diamond street, and Frank Notevis, 40 years old, of 1160 Mt. Vernon street, were held under $1000 bail each.

They were accused of assaulting Daniel Gelsatrum, 30 years old, of 1139 Lawrence street, and K. Agemian, 33 years old, of the same address, both of whom had taken the place of strikers at the Keystone plant.

In addition, Charles Szepeh, 40 years old, of 3294 Gaul street, Philadelphia, and Victor Robinolski, 40 years old, of South Seventh street, who were accused of rioting at the Castle Kid plant, were held for a hearing today. John Broski, 38 years old, of 1120 South Ninth street, alleged to have been with rioting strikers, was sentenced to twenty days in jail.

Probable fatal burns were received by Catherine Hatter, 4 years old, of 1145 Lawrence street, Camden, yesterday, when her dress caught fire from matches with which she was playing. Mrs. Nellie Hatter, the mother, was badly burned in beating out the flames. Both were taken to Cooper Hospital, where it was stated the little girl’s chances for recovery are slim. Catherine was temporarily left alone, and when the mother heard her screams shortly after, she found her little daughter ablaze, and before the flames were beaten out all the child’s clothing had been burned off.

Reaching for an oar while in a rowboat proved fatal to Frank Ahern, aged 22 years, of 416 Arch street, who was drowned in the Delaware off Thirty-third street, Camden, yesterday. 4 Bitten by Dogs, One Former Pugilist

Four persons, including a former Camden boxer, were among victims of dog bites recorded over the weekend. George Delker, 54, of 29 South Forty-second Street, the former boxer was attacked at Pennsville while romping on the beach with a pet spaniel. Delker was treated by a physician for lacerations of the left foot.

At Cooper Hospital three persons received treatment. They are Jonas Cooper, 24, of 1163 Lawrence Street; bit on left arm; Lawrence Repetto, 2, of 117 Main Street, bit on leg, and a physician John Garrity, 17, of 205 Byron Street, bit on leg.

Test Shows Rabid Dog Bit Boy

According to information received by the Camden Board of Health from R. B. Fitzrandolph, of the Laboratory of Hygiene, State Board of Health, the dog that bit 6-year-old Harry Ruhl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ruhl, of 1179 Lawrence street, last Sunday was a victim of rabies. This was ascertained by an examination of the canine’s brain. Harry received careful treatment at the Cooper Hospital and will now be under the supervision of the Board of Health.

Power Plant Engineer Dies

Forced to quit work when seized with abdominal pains, Frank N. Voshell, an engineer at the power plant of the Public Service Electric Company, was taken to his home at 1181 Lawrence street, Camden. His wife went out for a physician and when she returned with the doctor Mr. Voshell was dead. Coroner Pratt said death was due to acute indigestion. Mr. Voshell was 45 years old.

Fined $5 for Stealing Flags

When Walter Baker, 18 years old, of 126 North Eleventh street; Harry Chekeran, 31 years old, of 1185 Lawrence street, and Joseph Barberien, 22 years old, of 100 Penn street, were arraigned before Recorder Stackhouse in Camden yesterday charged with purloining American flags from Sixth and Washington streets, they said they were prompted from patriotic motives. They had no money to buy flags, they said. All were fined $5.
