FOREWORD

We, the STAFF OF THE PURPLE AND GOLD, are attempting to picture here a few of the most important memories which we have made while the earth was making its annual revolution around the sun in 1941-1942. We hope our class now and in later years will find in this record pleasure and satisfaction.
Rose Cianci,
Editor of January section

THIS YEAR

Even as the sun has been the center of the universe, our high school represents the hub of four years' overflowing life—four short years memory will lend eternity. Though our orbits lead us distantly into the remote, ever shall the mother-planet affect our course.
John Manos,
Editor of June section

In Memory Of

Page 6 — In Memory Of: William U. Dreizler, Ralph H. White

In Memory Of

IN MEMORY OF

We, the Class of January 1942, pay tribute to a beloved member of the faculty, Mr. William Dreizler, who was suddenly taken from our midst on November 16, 1941.
"He never made a brow look dark,
Nor caused a tear . . ."
He was our guide, helper, confidant, and friend.
To understand his untimely departure is to attempt the impossible. This, however, we know; his spirit will keep on living in the hearts of many of us for years to come.

WILLIAM U. DREIZLER

RALPH H. WHITE

Camden High School sustained a severe loss in the death of Mr. Ralph White, who was known not only as a member of the faculty, but also as a friend to all. His untiring efforts as head of the science department and director of the school's N. Y. A. program will long be remembered. Mr. White's belief in, love and understanding of, human nature won the hearts of many.
". . . friend to truth; of soul sincere,
In action faithful, and in honour clear;
Who broke no promise, serv'd no private end . . ."
The memory of Mr. White, our friend, may well be an inspiration to us as we take up our tasks in the world of tomorrow.

FOR A BETTER TOMORROW

Months before we entered the war on the side of our allies, many of our former teachers were serving in the United States Army. Now America is battling along with the United Nations in total war. Six of our teachers are serving throughout the boundaries of our fair country. These men along with hundreds of thousands of other loyal Americans are fighting side by side—fighting for the very democracy we all love and cherish.
We shall never forget these men, for to the students of Camden High School they were more than teachers, they exemplified to all the fine character and ideals of true American manhood. Although these men are scattered over the broad expanse of our country, every student and every faculty member wishes them the greatest possible amount of good fortune in their grave undertakings. We shall all look forward hopefully to the day that our cause is won and these same teachers may return to their former positions in Camden High School.

A Tribute

A TRIBUTE

In February Helen Reyner left Camden High School to take a position as librarian at the Vaux Junior High School in Philadelphia. Miss Reyner's absence will be felt in Camden High because through her efforts our library prospered and our students gained insight and knowledge under her tutelage.

As a token of our sincere appreciation, we, the class of January 1942, offer to Lelia D. Wiggins this tribute for her services as an inspiring teacher, and a faithful friend. We hope that in her retirement, the thoughts of our school and of its students will be cherished forever like a pleasant dream. We shall look back and always remember the teacher who had our best interests at heart.

Marjorie Van Horn left the Physical Education Department in February. She is now studying physio-therapy at the University of St. Louis. Our Girls' Athletic Association loses a fine adviser. Miss Van Horn guided many girls along the road to health and happiness during her years of service in Camden High. Her presence will be missed.

BY AND FOR THE STUDENTS

Leonard Hudson, President from September to January, hands over to Sidney Levy, President from January to June.

Lost and Found Department

A traffic officer on duty.

Since its inception the Student Government Organization has existed as a type of institution in Camden High.
The Student Government is a service organization embodying such necessary school factors as the Traffic, Usher, and Insignia groups.
Each Thursday elected representatives of the student body meet to discuss problems which confront them and mutually seek their solutions.
The September-February term was under the direction of Leonard Hudson, President; Sidney Levy, First Vice-President; Dolores Griffiths, Second Vice-President; John Murray, Secretary; Margaret Steck, Recorder; and Miss Ruth Carey, Faculty Adviser.
The February-June term was under the leadership of Sidney Levy, President; Dudley Lowden, First Vice-President; Mary Colallilo, Second Vice-President; John Murray, Secretary; and Marjorie Wahl, Recorder.
Among the more outstanding projects which the Student Government has carried through this year was the formation of the Defense Stamp Committee under the chairmanship of Robert Luartes. Serving on the committee with him were Peggy Moffett and Donald Davis.
In the first ten days of sales the Defense Stamp Committee disposed of a thousand dollars' worth of stamps and bonds.

CHAMPIONSHIP EXCURSION

The above chart shows the power of the hard-charging, fast-thinking, and always alert Purple Avalanche which represented Camden High on the gridiron in 1941. After two games had been postponed due to an infantile paralysis epidemic, the Avalanche really put the pressure on Trenton, bowling over the Capitol City eleven 36 to 2. The following week Vineland felt the full power of the great team to the tune of 31 to 0. Col-

lingswood was Camden's next victim and the rain really saved them from a worse beating than they took. After this 22-0 victory coach Billy Palese's boys passed their milestone to the championship by routing Atlantic City 13-0. Camden Catholic and Woodrow Wilson suffered a worse fate than anyone, getting thrashed 57-0 and 52-0, respectively. The victory over Woodrow Wilson gained for the Purple and Gold the South Jersey Group IV Championship. In a post season tilt Camden concluded one of its most successful years in its history by pounding out a 9-6 win over New Brunswick for the mythical state championship.
To pick any star players is hard, but Co-Captains Wally Bubien and sure-footed Al Vogt, who kicked the field goal that beat New Brunswick; Matty Siedlicki, Ray Ksiazek, Sid Wenof, Reds Sgariglio, Abe Savitsky and Ed Shuda is anybody's all-American line. Working behind this line were Apples Litwa, Rabbit Glemser, Rags Ragone and Duck-foot Weber.

There are many other boys who really put their hearts in making this a very great year for the coaches and Camden High.

Members of this year's championship team who gained all-star honors are: Glemser, Vogt, Siedlicki, Bubien, Ksiazek, and Shuda. Litwa was chosen as a member of the All-State team.

We added to our trophy case the South Jersey Group IV Championship and the Group IV Conference Championship trophies.

FEET!

1st row: Munger, manager; Hoover, Jakway, Knouff, Winslow, Robinson, captain; Selby, Paradise, Mangold, Jones, manager.
2nd row: Profeta, coach; Rozanski, Gregoreski, Stites, Marker, Smith, James, Hampton, Lemberger, Webster, John, Di Ciano, Asbell

Yes, that's what did it! It was eleven pair of feet that brought Camden High's soccer team through an undefeated season and gained for Coach Arnold Profeta's boys the co-championship of the South Jersey Soccer League. This latter distinction was shared with Haddon Heights High School.

Three letter men, Captain Claude Robinson, halfback; John Winslow, center forward; and Goalie Herbert Vitt formed the nucleus of this year's squad with the balance coming up from last year's scrappy junior varsity squad. Only one member of the first team will be lost through graduation. That player is Joseph Asbell, hard-hitting fullback. This bodes well for next year's success.
The season opened with Camden playing host to Woodrow Wilson. After playing on even terms for the greater portion of the game, the Camden High booters came through by the score of 8 to 1. The next opponent was Haddon Heights. This contest ended in a 1-1 deadlock. Again Wilson was encountered and again Camden was victorious, this time by a 2-1 score. The final game of the season was a scoreless tie with Haddon Heights. This was one of the longest games ever played in local scholastic soccer, going into three overtime periods. At the end the score was still 0-0.
Captain Robinson, Winslow, and Vitt were this year's letter men. John Webster was an outstanding player on the junior varsity squad. Mr. Louis Feinstein acted as assistant coach.

PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST

For nigh on to three weeks, twelve seniors studied assiduously under the very capable guidance of Miss Ethel B. Lord; at the end of which six of the more fortunate continued the grind for once again that length of time. As might have been inferred, the above was in preparation for the Public Speaking Contest, an annual competition for the Wilbur F. Rose Memorial Award. Of the dozen contestants, Robert Harter, Sennett Batten, Geraldine Dubin, Lenore Bellitz, Robert Schueing, Gloria Gibbons, Norman Eisenberg, Armand Capanna, John Manos, Dolores Griffiths, Adele Manheimer, and Cathy Casselman, the latter half survived the elimination, and participated in the finals, held on Tuesday evening, November the eighteenth.
The program, on the thirty-seventh anniversary of its establishment, was said to be the most variegated and interesting in the history of the contest, with selections ranging from "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Manos, to the exquisite "White Cliffs of Dover," presented by Cathy Casselman. Dolores Griffiths and Adele Manheimer delighted the audience with "Anne of Green Gables" and "What's Your Name?" respectively. Armand Capanna, by far the predominating thespian of Camden High, turned in a superb "If I Were King," while Norman Eisenberg convulsed the audience with "Tummies".
The results of the contest, although tabulated on that evening, are not so easily forthcoming; for contestants and public alike must contain themselves until the June Commencement Exercises, when the winners, one boy and a girl, are disclosed.

Music in Camden High School, pages 44 and 45

MUSIC in CAMDEN HIGH SCHOOL

Our orchestra made its debut this year at the Public Speaking Contest, but it was not until Friday, December fifth, at the traditional Concert that it really took the "limelight." The Concert is the main event in the musician's life at Camden High. Here is heard symphony from our orchestra; lively marches from our Band, under the direction of Mr. Koppenhaver; sentimental ballads and spirituals from our Glee Clubs; and swing and "jive" from the Syncopators.
This year Mr. Hall, a graduate of this school and a top notch drummer, very ably assisted Mr. Haley in conducting our orchestra. It is to these men, as we leave Camden High, that we wish to express our gratitude in producing the music that we like most to play.

Christmas Comes But Once a Year, pages 46 and 47

CHRISTMAS COMES BUT ONCE A YEAR

CHRISTMAS AT CAMDEN HIGH
The Christmas decorations were a perfect background for the activities that went on at Christmas time. Every student in the school experienced a thrill as he walked down the halls decorated in the true Christmas fashion. The seniors and juniors did a wonderful job in putting pine trees, holly, tinsel, and candles together to make our halls and auditorium echo the Christmas spirit.

The annual Christmas entertainment was a huge success. The Verse Speaking Choir under the direction of Miss Lord gave several selections that were beautifully presented. The play this year was a comedy entitled "Georgie Porgie." The cast included Michael Capparelli, Ruth Kates, Adele Manheimer, Peggy Moffett, Robert Harter, Sennett Batten, Warren Weiss, and Wanda Pointkowski. The play was one of the best we have ever had. The audience fairly rolled in the aisles laughing at the realistic situations portrayed before them.
The Christmas carols heard after the play added the finishing touches and sent everyone home full of the Yuletide spirit.
Children's laughter, the happiest sound in the world, is echoed all over the gymnasium at Camden High School. Mingled with this are the laughter, the oh's and ah's of the student body watching from the running track above the gym. It is hard to say who is getting more pleasure—the children or the audience. The scene of all this laughter and happiness is the Children's Home Party given annually at Camden High School.
Just when it seems that the seniors who are acting as "big brothers" and "big sisters" are going to collapse, there is a shout, and then Santa Claus (Norman Eisenberg) appears.
Who says there isn't any Santa Claus? Ask the children who were at the party. They return home with their gifts, and what is more they are full of ice cream and cake to remember this day forever. The seniors return home to recuperate and wonder where little children get all that energy.

The Senior Prom and The Record, pages 48 and 49

THE SENIOR PROM

One night in every senior's life is preceded by anxiety and followed by everlasting memories; this great event is the Senior Prom.
Dancing in the Senior Ballroom of the Hotel Walt Whitman, beautifully gowned girls and well-groomed young men sway dreamily to the lilting music of Betty Hart's Orchestra.
Intermission causes a rainbow-like display of gowns to file out of the ballroom and to fan out thru the lobby. The chance to peek again into the mirror, to apply those needed repairs, to take the "pause that refreshes," and to chat "man-to-man" and "girl-to-girl" comes at last.
Cinderella and her Prince Charming see with nostalgia the close of their last high school prom as one o'clock rings curfew (?).

THE RECORD

Among the traditions of Camden High School is the semi-annual appearance of the school magazine, "The Record."
It is on the Literary Staff of "The Record" that potential Horace Greelys "learn the ropes" by turning out school notes, class notes, and all news of interest to Camden High students.
"The Record" may be a far cry from large national magazines but it possesses all the basic elements that any newsstand magazine has.
There are the original poems and stories. There's a splash of "Joe Millers." The Literary Staff continually labors to meet a deadline. The Business Staff fights a deficit, the Circulation Staff uses high pressure salesmanship to sell "The Record," while the Art Staff concerns itself with the more esthetic aspects of this periodical.
With Albert Kreger and Joan Kreps as editors, the past year's editions have proved themselves well in line with the high quality and traditional scope of past "Records."

Albert Kreger and Anna Manolatos, editors from September to January, work with Joan Kreps, editor from January to June.

The Alexander M. Oaks Award and The Dukes Award, pages 50 and 51

THE ALEXANDER M. OAKS AWARD

A picture is made through the inspiration and the talent to produce. And every year in Camden High School a new picture is drawn with the same inspiration and ideals, but with different talent used for its production.
In the memory of Alexander M. Oaks a gold medal is presented to the senior boy, selected by the students and faculty, who best represents the ideals of a good American boy.
These ideals best describe the recipient of this award: scholarship—not exceptional, of a high standing; character—a true gentleman; athletics—participation in sports, but not necessarily a star; personality—a leader with confidence, good manners, and neatness of person.
In memory of Mr. Oaks, the "representative teacher," we add to the list of names this year's "artist" who made possible the finished product; the "representative student," Walter Bubien.

THE DUKES AWARD

Adele Manheimer, member of the June class, achieved the Dukes Award this year. The award was established two years ago by Mrs. Lelia Dukes Wiggins, former member of our faculty, in honor of her mother, Mrs. L. Ida Dukes. Adele's predecessor was Natalie Covert, first to be thus honored. In receiving the award, Adele personifies the type of young womanhood most admired by Mrs. Dukes, who was active as a social worker. Throughout Adele's four years in Camden High School, success, grace and a good sense of responsibility have marked her every advent, and her scintillating personality has made a lifelong impression on both students and teachers.

Court Decisions, pages 52 and 53

COURT

DECISIONS

Camden High's basketball team made a fair showing this 1941-1942 season. In the Group IV Conference the club split even in ten games. The team twice defeated the boys from Perth Amboy and Morristown and chalked up one victory over the New Brunswick "Zebras." The "Purple and Golds" bowed twice to the "Capital City" five and to the defending title holders, Asbury Park. When New Brunswick played host to the locals, the "Zebras" accounted for a victory.
The City Series trophy again resides in our trophy case! The Camden quintet twice defeated Woodrow Wilson and chalked up one victory over Camden Catholic. In the last of the City Series games Catholic defeated Camden.
In other games played Camden lost one and won one from Merchantville. In a single engagement Camden defeated Collingswood. For the first time in the school's history Camden played host to Lower Merion. The boys from across the river defeated the locals in as low a scoring game as has ever been witnessed at Convention Hall.
The Camden High basketeers defeated Collingswood in the state tournament playoffs, but the Camden lads were defeated by the Trenton five.
The Junior Varsity squad enjoyed a successful season in dropping only two games all season. Both victories were gained by the Asbury Park Club.
Camden High suffered a blow in the middle of the basketball season when Uncle Sam saw fit to summon Arthur Blaker and Walter Nowak for military service. Arthur Blaker, known to all and sundry as "Hutzy," had been head basketball coach at Camden High since the fall of 1936. The records show that his teams were South Jersey champs in the 1936-1937 season and in the 1940-1941 season. In 1936-1937, 1938-1939, 1939-1940, 1940-1941, and in 1941-1942 the boys under his tutelage brought home to us the City Series title. These records stand for all to see, but it was the high ideals that Coach Blaker stood for that will always endear him to all who came in contact with him. His spirit will continue to lead all wearers of the purple and gold to future successes.
"Walt" Nowak became Junior Varsity mentor this season. In a short time he trained a fast, hard-working combination that never tasted defeat under his guidance.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Wait a minute now—not so fast—for this is the Girls' Sports Page!
The year starts off with a bang, for who could find two faster and more exciting games than hockey and soccer! These not only refresh the mind, but what is more important benefit the waistline.
But now comes the game that is just about tops with all of us. Of course, you've guessed it—'tis basketball. What fast-running, keen-eyed, sharp-shooters we girls turned out to be! A few of the senior stars include Evelyn Brown, Mary Rozalowich, Eleanor Showalter, Mildred Peters, and Elizabeth Bleidorn.
Also, some of us are tops in tumbling or bowling.
That's all now, but you'll see us later.

"GOOD NEWS"

Once more Camden High School's curtain goes up on the Spring Operetta. The selection chosen for this year's presentation is "Good News," a musical comedy by De Sylva Brown and Henderson. The characters, scene and selections are thoroughly up-to-date in this altogether delightful college comedy.
Tom Marlowe (Howard Holt), football hero of Tait University, flunks his astronomy examination. Things look rather dark for the team, since Tom will be unable to play should he fail to pass a reconditional. Pat Bingham (Flora Thomas), Tom's sweetheart, persuades her demure and pretty cousin Connie Lane (May Dragonette), to tutor him, and a new love interest develops. Tom, assisted by Bobby (Gilbert Showalter), succeeds in winning the big game of the year, and incidentally, the hand and heart of Miss Lane.
This is a wholesome and charming story of college life—filled with romance and humor; generously interspersed with catchy songs and dances.

TRACK

CINDERS AND SPIKES

To greet Camden High's new track coach, Mr. Paul Shaffer, is as promising an assemblage as ever trod the cinders. Off to an early start, four of the regulars ("Ben" Pruss, "Walt" Dilsworth, Warren Gaines and "Dick" Dickinson) turned in an impressive showing at the Penn A. C. meet, pushing Trenton High for first place.
Graduation took a rather severe toll of the team, George Savitsky, shot-put artist, Dilsworth, Pruss and "Jack" Parker, cinder veterans, being the only lettermen returning. Mentor Shaffer's spirits were buoyed immeasurably, however, upon the promising prowess demonstrated by certain newcomers, notably, "Dick" Green, "Ray" Hozalski, "Len" Wojtkowiak, "Ed" Grzegorzewski, "Milt" Olden, "Frank" Ragone, and "Irv" Horwitz.
Supplementing their performance at the Penn A. C., the boys took first place at the Camden Moose Relays (Indoor), reinforcing the prosperous outlook for the oncoming season.

IT'S A RACQUET!

The 1942 Camden High School Tennis Team, under the very able tutorship of Mr. William Duthie, gives promise to be one of the most successful in years. Being unable to acquire transportation to the scheduled conference matches, the team has been compelled to withdraw from Group IV competition, and is to encounter teams only within a reasonable proximity.
No less than six veterans have returned to the courts this year, namely Joseph Asbell, Arthur Hoffman, Andrew Wessel, Sol Kantor, Andrew Francis and Leonard Smith. The third and fourth singles positions and the doubles team are in doubt, and it is for these spots that Nelson Boyd and Martin Beck are competing. Helmut Dietrich will ably hold down first singles position.

PLAY BALL

The national pastime was ushered in to Camden High School with a loud bang by a large group of baseball candidates reporting for the first practice. The lettermen from last year's varsity squad include Stan Chojnacki, Wally Bubien, Al Litwa, Jack Wilkerson, Charlie Weber, and Rollie Campoli. The boys from last year's jayvee squad are: Pete Mussa, Charlie Morehauser, John Murray, Francis Stack, Calvin Young, and John Winslow. The team is a member of the Camden Suburban League and New Jersey Group IV League. Although their coach Al Bass has made no predictions the team is confident of gaining many victories.

GIRLS' SPORTS

Spring is here, and what is more enjoyable than making homeruns in softball, and connecting balls in tennis—well, we can dream, can't we?
Some of us try our luck at horseback riding, while others display their skill at swimming. Archery also proves to be fascinating. We specialize in dancing, and where in the world could you find more of the minor sports than at Camden High?
But before you leave us entirely, we want to thank Miss Van Horn, Mrs. Lawson, and Miss Ryzinski, our faculty advisers, who make all this possible. Thanks also to Rita Hayes, President of the Girls' A.A.
