Nineteenth Street

Nineteenth Street runs from the Pavonia railroad switching yards across River Avenue north to Harrison Avenue in what was originally called the Pavonia section of what is now considered Cramer Hill. All addresses here are North 19th Street. There is also a short one-block section of Nineteenth Street in East Camden that runs south from Federal Street to Carman Street. There are no addresses on this street. The street had already been laid out by the time the 1887–1888 Camden City Directory was published.

Mrs. Harry W. Horst obituary — Camden Courier-Post, April 23, 1937

Mrs. Effie E. Horst, resident of Camden for 25 years died Wednesday at her home, 1240 North Nineteenth street, following a short illness.

Mrs. Horst is survived by her husband, Harry W. Horst; two sons, Albert of Collingswood and Leroy of Camden; three daughters, Florence, Mrs. Mabel White of New York and Mrs. Nettie Furman of Philadelphia; also three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., tomorrow at 8 West Kings Highway, Haddonfield. Rev. Donald Irwin, pastor of the Haddonfield Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Locustwood Memorial Park.

Police Look for Missing Persons

Police Look for Missing Persons — Philadelphia Inquirer, September 11, 1918

Police were asked yesterday to assist in locating Elizabeth Titette, 16 years old, of 922 South Sixty-eighth street, Philadelphia, who disappeared from her home about a week ago. Her father stated that he believes she was taken away by two men. He believes she is in Camden.

Robert Briley, 15 years old, of 1225 N. Nineteenth street, East Side, Camden, was also reported to the police as missing. He has been gone several days. When last seen by relatives he wore a dark coat, yellow trousers and brown cap.

Firemen’s Auto Injures

A Camden city fireman’s automobile figured in two successive accidents that injured four persons last night. The fireman is John C. Voll, 33, of 1230 North Nineteenth street, attached to Engine Company Number 9, Twenty-seventh and Federal streets. Voll was treated at Cooper Hospital for severe cuts on the face and mouth.

His machine collided at Eighteenth Street and River Road about 11 p.m. with the car of Steve Liperi, 23, of 408 West Third Street, Palmyra, injuring Liperi’s mother-in-law.

Liperi told police Voll’s car came at him in a zig-zag manner a block until it struck a pole at Seventeenth Street and River Road, went on the sidewalk and struck two women. One of these, Mrs. Lydia Ramsey, 32, of 2108 Howell Street, was treated at Cooper Hospital for severe cuts on the leg. The other, Miss Pauline Comfort, 22, of 1238 Liberty Street, was treated at West Jersey Homeopathic Hospital for severe bruises.

Liperi and his wife, Grace, 19, were unhurt, but her mother, Mrs. Mary Mancuso, 45, of 885 Velde Avenue, Delair, suffered cuts and bruises. No charges were made by either driver.

Otto Engler obituary — Camden Courier-Post, July 9, 1949

Otto Engler, 66, of 1110 North Nineteenth street, died today after a long illness. He was a resident of East Camden 31 years.

Mr. Engler is survived by his widow, Emma; two sons, Otto Jr., Camden, and John C., Haddonfield; a daughter, Mrs. Eleonor Jackson, Pennsauken township; a brother, Jules, Gloucester City, and three grandchildren.

Services will be he [sic] in the funeral home of G. Roedel & Son, 804 North Twenty-seventh street, Tuesday at 1 p.m. Friends may call there Monday night. Burial will be in Arlington cemetery.

Mischief Night ’96

Camden New Jersey Fire Department had a busy night as the Little Devils came out on Halloween Eve. The evening started out at 7:07 p.m. with a working house fire at 1042 North 19th Street in the Cramer Hill Section of the city. All hands went to work and had the blaze under control in about 20 minutes.

Son of Former Fire Captain Among Men Appointed to Police Force

Appointment for three policemen and four firemen, all of whom will report for duty today, was announced yesterday by Commissioner Mary W. Kobus, director of public safety.

The new policemen will be assigned to duty in company with older officers to gain experience. The new firefighters will be trained at the police fire school.

Edward D. Tatem, of 565 Mt. Vernon street, one of the new patrolmen, is a son of former Fire Captain William Tatem. Tatem is a graduate of Camden High School. Roland E. Comerford, of 2931 Cramer street, who also was appointed to the police force, is a son of Fireman William Comerford, chauffeur for Battalion Fire Chief Charles Erickson. Young Comerford is a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School.

The third new policeman is Joseph Hooven, of 918 North Nineteenth street. He is a Camden High graduate and also studied two years at Villanova College.

Those appointed firemen are Phillip H. Farrow, of 529 Newton avenue; John Gryckiewicz, of 810 North Front street, Thomas Winstanley, of 329 Bailey street, and Anthony Bretschneider, of 1621 Louis street.

Farrow and Gryckiewicz graduated from Woodrow Wilson and Gryckiewicz served a four year enlistment in the Navy. Bretschneider graduated from a Philadelphia high school and attended evening classes at Woodrow Wilson.

All appointments were made from a State Civil Service Commission list of eligibles. Commissioner Kobus has adopted a policy of appointing high school graduates to both the police and fire departments.

One man was rescued and 14 persons were routed early Sunday when fire damaged three two-story houses in the 200 block of Pearl st., North Camden.

Anthony Burzynski, 31, of 218 Pearl st., rescued by Fire Capt. John Gryckiewicz, 35, of 934 N. 19th st., after the former returned to the house in the mistaken belief his son was trapped inside, was treated at Cooper Hospital for smoke inhalation and cuts of the right hand and right foot. Hospital attendants administered oxygen to Burzynski for two hours.

District Chief Howard Gick said the blaze, cause of which was undetermined, started in the kitchen of the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Juckett, 218 Pearl st., where Burzynski, a relative, and six others were asleep. All were forced to leave the house in their night clothing.

Neighbors Forced to Flee

When the blaze spread to adjoining properties, five persons were forced from 220 Pearl st. and a woman was routed at 216 Pearl.

The fire was discovered about 7.30 a. m. when Mrs. Elizabeth Juckett, 49, sleeping on a sofa, was awakened by smoke pouring into the living room at 218 Pearl. Her screams roused her husband, 64, and the others in upstairs bedrooms and Juckett ran barefoot to an alarm box at 3rd and Pearl sts.

Also routed from the Juckett house were their daughters, Mary, 22; Mrs. Anna Mae Ganyor, 25, and Mrs. Elizabeth Perry, 20; Mrs. Perry’s daughter, Elizabeth, 7 months; Burzynski and his wife, Catherine, 27, another daughter of the Jucketts, and the Burzynskis’ son, Lawrence, 4.

Burzynski was overcome when he ran inside and up to the front bedroom on the second floor, thinking his son had been left behind. He collapsed on the window sill after breaking the pane.

Gryckiewicz, who arrived with Engine Co. 6, saw the inert figure and raised a ladder. Gryckiewicz ran up the ladder and lifted Burzynski, a Yellow Cab Co. driver, through the window.

50 Birds Saved

At 220 Pearl st., William E. Schloendorn, 31; his wife, Shirley, 27; their children, Barbara, 8, and William, 6, and Schloendorn’s brother, Francis, 23, were able to don clothing before being forced out by smoke.

Schloendorn and his brother, both brakemen for the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines, made several trips through the smoke to rescue from a rear shed about 50 canaries and parakeets, which William raises. The birds were in 17 cages.

Miss Edith Johnson, home alone at 216, ran out in her night clothing with her pet cocker spaniel, Chips, and went to a nearby house to telephone her father, William B. Johnson, custodian at Cassady School, who then returned home.

Gick said the fire was confined to the rear sections of the three homes by members of Engine Companies 2 and 6 and Truck Co. 1. Those living at the Juckett home were given temporary shelter by friends and relatives.

Requiem high Mass will be sung at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 29th st. and River ave. Friends will meet at 9 a.m. in the Roedel Funeral Home, 804-06 N. 27th st., where they may call tonight. Burial will be private. The family requests that flowers be omitted.

Robert Gess, 63, of 920 North Nineteenth street, became ill and died today at the plant of Howland Croft Sons & Co., spinners, Broadway and Jefferson street, where he was employed as a foreman for the last 32 years.

Dr. R. Dean Cavalli, county physician, who was summoned to the plant by police, said Gess probably died of a heart attack. He ordered the body taken to West Jersey hospital.

Guns Found in Cramer Hill After Tip From Underworld

War on Detectives Believed Planned

Camden detectives yesterday arrested a paroled convict and seized a miniature arsenal on a tip that Philadelphia gangsters were hiding here to “knock off” local officers.

The tipster said the “knock off” was in revenge for “bearing down” on gangsters and racketeers.

The arrest was the first move in the local drive to harry haven-seeking Philadelphia racketeers from this city.

The convict was arrested and his arsenal seized in Cramer Hill, when police raided the place.

The man arrested is Philip Caplan, who told police he lived at the house raided, 919 North Nineteenth street. According to police, Caplan has a record “as long as your arm.”

Believed ‘Master Mind’

Police expressed an opinion that Caplan was the “master mind” of several recent holdups here. They said they believed he directed the holdups, although not appearing at the scene of the crimes.

Three revolvers, their numbers filed off, and several boxes of cartridges and shot-gun shells, were found in a closet in the house.

Detective Lieut. Louis Shaw said he believed Caplan “and his gang” fled to this city to escape the gang probe now under way in Philadelphia.

Betting Slips Seized

A brief case, containing thousands of number betting slips and other papers, also was seized. Police are attempting to check on the contents.

Caplan was held on suspicion and for possession of weapons.

Detectives Benjamin Simon, George Zeitz, Clifford Del Rossi and Edwin Mills staged the raid, after having had the house under observation four days.

Police learned of the alleged gang headquarters through a “tip” from the underworld. They were informed that several Philadelphia gangsters had rented the house and “were laying in wait for the opportunity of knocking off Camden detectives who were ‘bearing down’ on racketeers and holdup men.”

Detective Simon said their informant told them they would find several guns in the place and two or three sawed-off shotguns, all of which have been used in recent holdups in this city. Police believe some of the guns were removed from the place recently.

Caplan admitted to ownership of the guns when questioned at detective headquarters, but said he was not carrying them on his person and asked that they be returned to him.

Was Paroled Recently

Caplan was paroled recently in Philadelphia, after having been sentenced to serve 15 years in the Eastern Penitentiary for holdup and robbery at the point of a gun.

“This man Caplan has a record as long as your arm,” Lieutenant Shaw said. “He is a racketeer and is now on parole from a 15-year sentence for holdup and robbery at the point of a gun. I have reason to believe he is an expert safe cracker and may be wanted in some other cities. The contents of the brief case will be investigated. It may be this man and his gang were chased out of Philadelphia in view of the current war on numbers and crime there. I do not believe this man is in the numbers business, but I do believe some of the gang he is connected with may be number barons.”

Police arrested a second man outside the Nineteenth street dwelling, but he was released after questioning at police headquarters. They did not reveal his name.

Simon said known “crooks” have been going in and out of the Cramer Hill address since the police have been watching the place.

Three Camden men have New Year’s celebration to blame for their predicament today.

All of them tipped the “flowing bowl” a bit too much last night. Today one was sentenced to county jail for 60 days for ending his party by beating his wife; the second paid a $25 fine after he had informed holiday crowds in a loud voice that it would take a riot squad to arrest him and the third will spend 20 days in county jail regretting that he tipped over a number of chairs and tables in a local restaurant while intoxicated.

Mrs. Eleanor Reilley, 2231 North Nineteenth street, told Judge Bernard Bertman this morning that her husband, Charles Beilley [sic], 37 years old, from whom she has been separated for two years, broke into her house last night while intoxicated and beat her. Reilley said he could not remember what had happened after he took a few drinks.

John Kernan, 31 years old, Second and Market streets, wanted to get into the Stanley Theatre, Broadway and Market streets at 1 a.m. today. When he was refused admission he defied the world to keep him out. “It took the whole Gloucester police force to arrest me once and it’s going to take a riot squad to do it again,” he is reported to have shouted. George Frost, motorcycle officer, quickly silenced the man and took him to city jail.

Stanley Molick, 36 years old, 1155 Louis street, was accused by Patrolman Charles Smith of tipping over chairs and tables in a restaurant at Mt. Ephraim avenue and Everett street. When Smith said that Molick was intoxicated “early every Saturday night” Judge Bertman sent him to jail for 20 days.
