Mary Naden and her family operated a furniture and home furnishings business on Kaighn Avenue at Clover Street in Camden NJ for the better part of five decades. One son, Jacob Naden, also operated a second shop in East Camden on Federal Street at 24th Street in the 1930s and 1940s.
Born in Russia in 1900, Jacob Naden came to America in 1913. He married Mollie Visor in the early 1920s; however the marriage did not last, and he remarried. In 1924 he was living at 1025 Princess Avenue in Camden’s Parkside section. He wed shortly before the April 1930 census, and with wife Doris was living in a home at 3728 Terrace Avenue in Pennsauken NJ. He later returned to the Parkside section of Camden NJ, living at 1503 Baird Boulevard, near many other members of the Camden business community and Congregation Beth El. Jacob Naden was very learned in Jewish matters, and was active in civic affairs within the Jewish community. He was an active member of the Camden lodge of B’nai B’rith. By the mid-1960s he had moved his business to Riverside NJ.
The East Camden store was sold to the Hurley department store chain in the late 1940s. The Naden store on Kaighn Avenue remained in business as late as 1977. Jacob Naden passed away in 1972.
The building at 773–775–777 Kaighn Avenue was later occupied by South Jersey Store Fixtures.

Phila. Rabbi Urges Freedom for Youth

B’nai B’rith Told Secrecy is Only Result of Prohibitions
Freedom for youth brings its own antidote and makes for better citizenship than repression, Rabbi William H. Fineshriber, of Keneseth Israel Synagogue, Philadelphia, last night told members of Camden Lodge, No. 915, Independent Order of B’nai B’rith.
Rabbi Fineshriber addressed members, wives and friends at the formal installation of officers of the lodge in Hotel Walt Whitman.
Meyer L. Sakin, youthful attorney, was sworn in as president, succeeding Lewis Liberman, likewise an attorney.
The boy of yesterday was forbidden to do many things, Rabbi Fineshriber declared, but the prohibitions had no other effect than to drive him to secrecy. Modern child education teaches parents to permit the boy or girl greater latitude in movement and habits.
He pointed out that the freedom on the part of youth teaches him to eschew bad habits in time and to continue the good habits. Good citizenship requires self-repression rather than forced prohibition.
Rabbi Archie Davidson, local rabbi, mildly disagreed with his Philadelphia colleague. Davidson warmly welcomed Rabbi Nachman Arnoff, newly-elected rabbi of Beth-El Synagogue, to the city and bestowed his best wishes upon the new officers of the B’nai B’rith lodge.
Harry Moskowitz, Philadelphia, represented the Grand Lodge and installed the new officers. Besides Sakin they are Dr. David S. Cooper, vice president; Harry W. Markowich, secretary; Dr. Leopold Goldstein, assistant secretary; Herman Odlen, treasurer; Fred Siris, financial secretary; Max Liberman, monitor; Hyman James, assistant monitor; Nathan Friedenberg, warden; A. Edward Friedberg, guardian; Louis Cades, Abraham Fuhrman and Louis Tarter, trustees.
The new board of governors consists of Bernard Blank, Dr. Samuel Blank, Jacob E. Brown, Dr. Reuben L. Cutler, Israel Eisenberg, Dr. Alexander Ellis, Dr. S. Goldman, Dr. Hyman I. Goldstein, Israel Heine, Emmanuel Kun, Dr. William Laub, Jack Naden, Max Peck, Dr. D. N. Rappaport, Sig. Schoenagle, Samuel Shane, Dr. Isadore S. Siris, Dr. Samuel S. Tomkins, Joseph Varbalow, Benjamin Weinberg, Meyer Wessel, Maurice B. Wessel and Ellis Goodman.
Liberman presided as toastmaster. Dr. Hyman I. Goldstein, New Jersey State Deputy; Assistant Prosecutor Varbalow and Sakin addressed the members and guests.

Kaighn Avenue Business Enlarges in Time for Camden Victory Days
The Naden store at 773 Kaighn avenue has expanded its business facilities with the conversion of seven adjoining dwellings into show rooms, just in time for Camden Victory Days.
Mrs. Mary Naden revealed that 3500 extra square feet have been added to the big store along Kaighn avenue, and as an result, a separate room now is available for each type of furniture and household appliances.
One room shows children’s furniture exclusively; another, bedroom furniture; another, living room sets; one, breakfast room furniture; one, dinettes; one, floor coverings, and so on.
“We have the largest selection of furniture we ever have had and it is arranged so the customer can view the assortment and make his selection with the most facility,” Mrs. Naden explained.
“Furthermore, prices never were lower. This is the ideal time to buy. And money saved by purchasing at our store can be used to buy defense stamps and bonds and in that way help support our country’s defense.”
Mrs. Naden said specials have been listed in every department for Victory Days.
East Camden Store Honors Men in Armed Services

In this window of the Jacob Naden furniture store at Twenty-fourth and Federal streets, photographs of nearly 200 East Camden youths and men in the armed forces are displayed in tribute to their patriotic efforts to save America from the Axis. The display was made possible by the cooperation of the parents and wives of the men in service, who furnished the pictures, Naden explained. Naden’s store is known as “the complete home furnisher.”
