Introduction

Twenty-Sixth Street begins in what was originally called the Pavonia section of what is now considered Cramer Hill and ends in East Camden when it intersects with Bank and Mickle Streets. It was first laid out sometime prior to 1887; it was called Union Street, and was renamed sometime after the 1899 annexation of Stockton Township to Camden. The street begins at the Delaware River and runs south, across River Road, intersects with North 27th Street, then starts again once beyond the Pavonia railroad switching yard at Howell Street south to Westfield Avenue, where it is interrupted by the “firehouse-police station-library” triangle between Westfield and Federal Street. At Federal the street runs on for two blocks, where it terminates at the intersection of Bank and Mickle Streets.

As in all numbered streets in Camden, it is North 26th Street above Federal, and South 26th below.

The 7 o’clock ceremony was performed in the presence of the immediate families and a few intimate friends by the Rev. Werner Eberbach, pastor of Christus Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Following a small reception, the couple left for a brief honeymoon. They will make their home in Camden.

The bride is currently stationed at Washington, D. C., serving a year with the WAVES.

Camden Girl, 9, Scalded As Hot Water Spills

A 9-year-old East Camden child was scalded Thursday night when a pan of hot water accidentally toppled from a table and fell in her lap.

Mary Burke, of 1241 North Twenty-sixth street, suffered burns of the thighs and legs and was held for observation at West Jersey hospital.

The child’s mother, Ruth, told police that she was making a medicinal preparation so her daughter could inhale to relieve a chest cold when the pan of water spilled. Mrs. Burke called police who took the girl to the hospital.

Camden Man Seized In Gambling Raid

Raiding police arrested Roy Bond, 26, of 1238 N. 26th st., Thursday on numbers charges.

He was released in $1000 bond pending a hearing today before Acting Municipal Judge Lario.

Detectives Louis Schmidt and Joseph Carponi [sic] said when they raided the Bond house they found numbers slips. They confiscated a telephone which they said was used in the numbers game. They also said they had the Bond house under surveillance for “several weeks.”

Wrong Tags, No License / Cost Autoist $35 Fine

Harry Thieme, 34, of 1219 North Twenty-fifth street, was fined $25 and costs last night for driving with improper tags and $10 and costs for having no license, at a hearing before Recorder George E. Yost, in Pennsauken.

Thieme, arrested Wednesday night on Cove road, said the tags were for a car he formerly owned and that he could produce the bill of sale for the car he was driving.

Used as Junkyard / Gone But Not Forgotten

An 11th property, located at 1147-49 N. 26th st., placed on the condemned list, is used as a junkyard, against which residents in the neighborhood have complained. It is owned by Michael Mazzilli, whose address city records list as 1149 N. 26th st. The report by the inspector cites: “This huge one-story frame enclosure is virtually in a state of collapse. It is badly deteriorated, leaning dangerously and absolutely beyond repair. It is cluttered with junk, refuse of all kinds and is in itself a grave fire hazard. The existence of this irreparable structure is disgracefully and definitely inimical to the general public.”

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN is the junkyard that formerly stood on this site at 26th st. and Pierce ave. The yard was on the list of condemned properties in the city. Several months ago its condition was publicized by The Courier-Post by photograph and story. A recent visit to the area found this condition existing. The structure is down but much of the ruins still lie strewn about the ground. The owner is listed by city records as Michael Mazilli, care of Guiseppe Mazilli, 15 Marlton ave.

Mrs. Sophie Buechler of East Camden Dies

Mrs. Sophie Buechler, 74, wife of Christian Buechler, died yesterday at her home, 1130 North Twenty-sixth street, after a brief illness.

Born in Germany, Mrs. Buechler came to the United States more than 60 years ago and settled in Philadelphia. She had lived in East Camden since 1902. Mr. Buechler is a retired employe of the New York Shipbuilding Corporation.

Mrs. Buechler was formerly married to Harry Hess, who died many years ago. She had four children by the first marriage and two by the second. She was an aunt of Mrs. Pauline B. Caper, formerly City Commissioner Mary W. Kobus.

The husband, two sons, four daughters and 12 grandchildren are the survivors. All live in Camden. The children are Mrs. Edward C. Bauer, Jr., Mrs. Raymond Gehret, Mrs. Ralph F. Bingemann, whose husband is junior captain of Camden Fire Truck Co., No. 1; Mrs. Bernard C. Bauer, Bernard Buechler and Harry Hess, a hoseman attached to No. 11 Engine Co.

Mrs. Buechler was a member of the Ladies’ Aid Society of Christ Evangelical German Lutheran Church. The funeral will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday in a funeral home at 804 North Twenty-seventh street. Burial will be in Lakeview Memorial Park.

3 E. Camden Youths Nabbed as Suspects

Three East Camden youths were arrested and held “on suspicion” early yesterday when policemen said they failed to explain satisfactorily why they were at Twenty-fourth and Howell Streets at 1:30 a.m.

Sergeant Edward Hahn and District Detective Richard Donnelly made the arrest. The youths gave their names as Charles Bowers, 17, of 1024 north twenty-sixth street, Henry Allhiser, 17, of 2415 Howell Street, and James Devenney, 17, of 1161 North Thirty-third street. They will be questioned today.

948 North 26th Street — Christopher L. Dietz, Union Hotel, 1892–1893. Philadelphia saloon-keeper C.L. Dietz came to Camden shortly before the 1892 City Directory was compiled, where he operated the Union Hotel. In 1893 he moved one block, to 1001 North 25th Street, and opened the Crescent Bottling Company.

948 North 26th Street — Valentine Doerr & Family, 1894–1899. Translation of sign: “Do not get annoyed, man! Drink one and Shut up!” Valentine Doerr was the son-in-law of Christopher L. Dietz. When Dietz moved across the street, Doerr & family remained at this address. City Directories through 1898 show him operating a cigar store. In April of 1898 he was granted a liquor license. He passed away on October 10, 1898 at the age of 38 years and nine months, leaving a young wife and 4 children.

Police-Firemen Widows Receive City Pensions

POLICE-FIREMEN WIDOWS RECEIVE CITY PENSIONS

Pensions were granted today to the widows of a policeman and fireman by the Police and Firemen's Beneficial Association.

Mrs. Martha C. Cox, 64 years old, 207 North Fourth street, was granted a pension of $77.50 a month. She is the widow of Wright Cox, who died on November 14. He served 19 years on the police force and 17 years in the fire department.

A pension of $87.50 a month was granted to Mrs. Anna Gick, whose husband Captain Robert Gick, dropped dead in an East Camden firehouse on November 31. She lives at 928 North Twenty-sixth street. The pension is half of the monthly salary that Captain Gick received. He was 68 years old when he died.

Death Strikes Three In Camden

Death quickly summoned three in Camden yesterday. Robert Clark, 60 years old, of Kensington, was found dead in bed at the home of his sister, Mrs. Robert Taylor, 910 North Twenty-sixth street. Mrs. Lulian Birkmire, 33 years old, of 412 Federal street, was seized with a fainting spell and died shortly after the arrival of a physician. Mrs. Emma Clark, 80 years old, died suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Millie Carr, 553 Roberts street. Coroner Bentley gave certificates of death due to heart disease in each instance.

Made Unconscious by Blow, Then Robbed

East Camden Man Loses $13, Which Negro Highwayman Secures After Gagging Him

On his way home from work yesterday afternoon George Elton, of 141 North Twenty-sixth street, East Camden, was held up and robbed on Baird avenue, near Marlton pike. His assailant, a negro, secured $13 and made his escape.

Elton works in South Camden, and he cut through Baird avenue at Forest Hill Park to reach his home. As he was walking along he heard someone say, “Pretty hot day,” and when he replied in the affirmative and looked around he saw the negro. The next moment, Elton asserts, he was knocked unconscious by some blunt instrument. When he regained consciousness he was gagged and his money, representing his week’s wages, had been taken. Persons passing through the avenue found Elton lying on the ground.

Mrs. Mary J. Love, 74, of 113 N. 26th st., died Monday in Cooper Hospital. Born in Ireland, she lived in Camden 47 years. She was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Joseph’s Church, and the Order of Shepherds of Bethlehem.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Mary Lowe and Mrs. Gertrude Endt, of Camden; Mrs. Anna McCabe and Mrs. Helen Murphy, of Philadelphia; a sister, Mrs. Catherine Haines, and a brother, Patrick Cregan, both of Philadelphia; eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Requiem high Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a. m. in St. Joseph’s Church, 29th and Federal sts. Relatives and friends will meet at 9 a. m. in the Edward P. Leonard Jr. Funeral Home, 35th st. and River ave., where they may call Friday night. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, in Delaware Township.

Two Camden residents received the degree of Doctor of Optometry last Thursday at commencement exercises of the Pennsylvania State College of Optometry in Town Hall, Philadelphia.

Special Officer Dies At Wheel of Auto

A 64-year-old special officer, employed in South Camden by merchants and property owners on Haddon and Kaighn aves., suffered a heart attack at the wheel of his automobile early today.

Wilbert Moore, of 54 S. 26th st., was pronounced dead at Cooper Hospital a few moments after he had lost control of his car at Baird blvd. and Pfeiffer ave., striking a utility pole.

Coroner Robert J. Blake, who issued the death certificate, said Moore died from a heart ailment. About a year ago, Blake said, Moore suffered a minor heart attack.

It was learned that Moore had been employed by merchants and property owners in the Haddon-Kaighn section for approximately 20 years. He is survived by his wife, Wilhelmina.

Despondency Cause of Suicide

Barring and locking the doors of his home after his wife had gone on an errand, Patrick Haley, a bridge builder, aged 63 years, of 113 South Twenty-sixth street, East Camden, ended his life by shooting himself through the head yesterday. He had been despondent because of his inability to get work.
