Twenty-Second Street begins in what was originally called the Pavonia section of what is now considered Cramer Hill and ends in East Camden at Federal Street. The street had already been laid out by the time the 1887–1888 Camden City Directory was published. The street begins at Harrison Avenue and runs south, across River Road to the Pavonia railroad switching yard, then from Howell Street to Federal Street.

5 SWIMMERS DROWNED IN SO. JERSEY WATERS
Two Brothers Die as One Goes to Aid of Other; Another Treated for Exhaustion After Futile Rescue Attempt
Five swimmers were drowned over the week-end while seeking relief from heat by bathing in South Jersey streams.
Two brothers lost their lives at Crosswicks near Bordentown when one went to the other's aid in Crosswicks creek. Two died in inland waterways at Wildwood, while the fifth was drowned in Cohansey river at Greenwich.
Those drowned were: Claude Tucker, 12, of Crosswicks. Cecil Tucker, 18, of Crosswicks. William Bridges, 14, of Wildwood. William White, 16, of 7914 Lyons avenue, Philadelphia. Owen McCoy, 19, of Brooklyn, N. Y.
The Tucker brothers were swimming in the creek one mile from their home late Saturday with William Horner, 16, and Clifford Spooner, 12, of Crosswicks. Three of them swam to the river bank, while Claude Tucker stayed in midstream. He suddenly called for “help” and his brother went to his aid. At first it was apparent the older boy could save the younger one, but Claude got a strangle hold on the other, and they both went down.
Bodies Are Recovered
The other two boys went to their aid, but they failed to return to the surface. The boys notified the Hamilton township police, who grappled and recovered the bodies locked in each other’s arms.
Coroner William P. Young and Dr. Theodore Mitskas, Crosswicks, worked with a pulmotor and respirator nearly an hour in a vain effort to revive the boys. Their mother, Mrs. William B. Tucker, who has been ill with heart disease, was prostrated with grief last night.
The boys are also survived by three other brothers and a sister—Aaron, 11; Samuel, 16; Marvin, 25, and Mary, 8.
The White boy was swimming in Hoffman’s canal at North Wildwood yesterday when he was drowned. He and a companion, Vincent Krist, 7930 Lyons avenue, Philadelphia, went to the resort for the day. Krist made a vain effort to save White. He said he dived toward him, but White never came to the surface after going down. Krist said the boy had not eaten a heavy lunch. Beach guards recovered the boy.
Fails in Rescue
Young Bridges was swimming with Charles Carolson, 16, of 511 West Lincoln avenue, Wildwood. When Bridges called for “help” Carolson went to his aid. He struggled with him several minutes and finally became weak and Bridges slipped from his grasp. Carolson had difficulty in getting ashore.
J. W. Reed [sic], 1147 North Twenty-second street, Camden, a passing motorist, notified police and beach guards, who recovered the body. A physician treated Carolson.
The McCoy youth and a companion, Arthur King, 21, of Brooklyn, were swimming in the Cohansey river. He said McCoy gave a startled cry and began to sink. Capt. Charles Briggs of Greenwich set out from shore in a boat. McCoy failed to come to the surface after first going down. McCoy and King went to Greenwich a few days ago to obtain employment.
Emma Metzger, 22, of 2267 South Seventh street, Camden, suffered a fractured skull at 4 p. m. yesterday when her head struck a pipe while diving in Blackwood lake. She was quickly rescued by friends and taken to Underwood Hospital, Woodbury, where he [sic] condition is said to be serious.
Joseph Stewart, 14, of Smith lane and Oaklyn road, Runnemede, received a severe gash on the right knee when he kneeled on glass while bathing at Runnemede. He was treated at Underwood Hospital.
Dies While Visiting, 1131 North 22nd Street

DIES WHILE VISITING
After a sudden attack of pneumonia while visiting her brother, Miss Henrietta Townsend, aged 56 years, a retired Philadelphia school teacher, died at her relative’s home, 1131 North Twenty-second street, East Camden. She had been at the home of her brother, John J. Townsend, but a short time when she was taken ill. A physician who was called said that death was due to the pneumonia, but that a heart affection had contributed to the sudden end. Miss Townsend for a number of years taught school at Pokomoke City, Md. She resided at 1247 North Forty-seventh street, Philadelphia.

Brushes Flash on North Twenty-Second Street as Girls Don Overalls and Tackle Man’s Job; Falls Become Part of Day’s Work
The rhythmic swish and slap of paint brushes wielded by feminine arms resounded yesterday on the exterior of a house at 1128 North Twenty-second street.
Back and forth, up and down flashed the brushes in the now dexterous and somewhat paint bedaubed fingers of the Misses Lou and Sue Townsend, sisters, 21 and 17, respectively, who dwell in the house they are painting.
They’ve been on the job about a week and intend to stick to it as long as the paint holds out.
“I guess there’d be enough paint left if we could wring out these,” said Lou ruefully pointing to the overalls she and her sister are wearing.
Sue was climbing with uncertain steps to a top wrung [sic] of the ladder as her sister steadied it at the same time handing her a can of paint.
“Do we ever fall?” exclaimed Sue from her high perch. “I’ll say we do—in fact it’s getting to be a habit and we don’t mind it any more. Pretty hot stuff, though, don’t you think for a couple of females? I’ve got a boy friend with a cottage on the Rancocas and he wants me to come right up and do his place as soon as this job is finished. You know, Lou, that’s not a bad idea. It would be cooler up there on the Rancocas and we could take a dip in the creek during intermissions.”
Lou, whose name is Louise, and Sue, suddenly decided last week that painting the house would relieve them from the boredom of idleness. Their parents are Mr. and Mrs. John J. Townsend.

“When Samuel Cooper decided to move from the ferry-house at Cooper’s Point (known as ‘Cooper’s Point Hotel’) to his farm, which he called ‘Pleasant View Farm,’ now covered by a large part of the Eleventh Ward, he erected the spacious mansion, still standing, on Twenty-second street. It is built of bricks, which were said to have been brought from England, and is two and one-half stories in height. Embedded in the north end of the building, in light colored, bricks, are the initials S P During the ante-bellum days this was one of the ‘stations’ on the line of the ‘Underground Railroad.’ In the hollow to the north of the railroad, between the junction of the Trenton and Mount Holly branches was a favorite location for fugitive slaves. He died in this house in 1812, and during his latter life was very active among the Friends, receiving the commendation of the famous Quaker preacher, John Hunt.”

A little bit more History on the old colonial farm house on the corner of 22nd Street and Wayne Avenue, the old Samuel Cooper house. For as long as I have known, from 1964, when I was born until late 1979 the house was occupied by my Aunt Jean (nee Hodge) and Uncle Bob (Robert) Catling. They lived there with his daughter Brenda Catling her husband William Gibson Sr. and their children Brenda, Lisa and William Jr. The house is well described in your historical information. The other side of the house was occupied by an older couple of woman, I don’t know much about them, they were kind of private. My uncle was the town’s huckster…he used to go around Cramer Hill and other parts of Camden in his pick-up truck with Lolly. He was the one who used to yell “Fish Man.

Mrs. Emma E. Wahl, 86, who had lived in East Camden for 55 years, died Sunday night at the home of a son, Horace F. C. Wahl, 132 Kendall boulevard, Oaklyn. She had been ill three weeks. Born in Philadelphia, Mrs. Wahl was the widow of Frederick Wahl, who died 35 years ago and who for many years conducted a milk route in East Camden. Mrs. Wahl lived for many years at 2730 Arthur avenue, later taking up her home with her other son, Russell, at 930 North Twenty-second street. Besides her two sons, she is survived by three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Harriet Baker, Chalfont, Pa. She was a member of Crescent Chapter of Eastern Star and Betsy Ross Council, Daughters of America. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 1 p. m. at a funeral establishment at 804 North Twenty-seventh street. Burial will be in Northwood Cemetery, Philadelphia.

SIX FIREMEN CITED HERE FOR HEROISM
Six Camden firemen have been cited for outstanding service by the Fire Department Merit Board for rescuing three Puerto Rican children from a blazing second floor apartment at 444 N. 5th st. last Dec. 26.
The Merit Board, composed of chiefs in the Camden Fire Department, also pointed out the heroic work of Michael Cimini, a bartender, of 925 N. 22nd st., who rescued four other children before arrival of firemen.

MRS. MARGARET ETHRIDGE
The funeral for Mrs. Margaret Ethridge, 75, widow of Jeremiah Ethridge, who died Thursday at her home, 142 North Twenty-second street, after an illness of three months, will be held Monday with a high mass in St. Joseph’s Church at 9 a. m. Members of the family and friends will meet at the home at 8 a. m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
A resident of Camden more than 20 years, Mrs. Ethridge is survived by two sons, John, of Camden, and Jeremiah, of Philadelphia; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Knighton, Mrs. Caroline Wible and Mrs. Margaret Knighton, of Camden; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Mrs. Barr [sic] was a member of the Rosary Society of St. Joseph’s Church.

6 ARRESTED IN RAID PAY $225 IN FINES
Six men arrested in a North Twenty-second street raid Saturday night were fined a total of $225, two women forfeited $10 security each and two other men received suspended sentences before Police Judge Pancoast yesterday.
Bernard McLaughlin, 22, of 140 North Twenty-second street, pleaded guilty to permitting disorderly persons to congregate and was fined $100. Detectives testified they found 135 bottles of home brew and two quarts of liquor.
George Humphries, 21, of 140 North Twenty-second street; Francis Sullivan, 22, of 122 North Twenty-second; Edward Parvin, 19, of 123 Dudley street; George O’Conner, 41, of 1435 South Tenth street, and Arnold Emery, 21, of 2038 Cleveland avenue, were fined $25 each after they testified they saw no one buy anything to drink.
Sentence was suspended on Elmer Ward, 28, of 525 Ray street, a taxidriver, and Clifford Lydman, 21, of 2116 Howell street, who arrived at the “party” at the same time as the police. Mary Patton, 23, of 2412 Garnett street, and Helen Jeffries, 29, of 219 Boston avenue, both Philadelphia, forfeited $10 security.

When Mrs. Ambrose Faust, of 138 North Twenty-second street, East Camden, yesterday went to see how her 6-month-old son, John, was sleeping she found the infant had smothered to death. This was the result of the child snuggling down into the covers.

Carl WEIWADEL
Funeral services for Carl Weiwadel, a Spanish-American and Philippine wars veteran, will be held at 2 p. m. tomorrow from Schroeder Chapel, Broadway and Royden Street. He lived at 138 North Twenty-second Street, and was well-known on the East Side. He died Friday night in Cooper Hospital at the age of 45.
During his war service he won two service medals and a sharpshooters medal. He was a member of Post 980, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and his comrades will act as pallbearers. Burial will be in Arlington cemetery.
He is survived by his widow, several children, and a brother and sister. One son, Harold, died two months ago. He was a foreman for the Philadelphia Metal Stamping Co.
