Twenty-Fourth Street

Twenty-Fourth Street begins in what was originally called the Pavonia section of what is now considered Cramer Hill and ends in East Camden at Marlton Avenue. The street had already been laid out by the time the 1887–1888 Camden City Directory was published and was known as Union Street. The street begins at Harrison Avenue and runs south, across River Avenue to the Pavonia railroad switching yard, then to Federal Street, then to Marlton Avenue. As in all numbered streets in Camden, it is North 24th Street above Federal, and South 24th below.

Today is a red letter day in a little home at 1144 North Twenty-fourth street, for Mr. and Mrs. Burkhard Buonzle [sic], who are each 70 years old, are celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary.

But there’s more to the story than that. The account of the aged pair’s romance reads like a thrilling melodrama. Here it is by acts:

Characters

BURKHARD BUONZLE—A dashing young officer in the Swiss Army, dressed in the gayest uniform his rank allows.

KATHARINE ALBISSON—A pretty, unsophisticated young woman, 20 years old, just the age of the officer.

Act One

The action takes place in the spring of 1877 on the outskirts of a little village in County Luzorn [sic], Switzerland. Peasants are gathering around the community well to draw their day’s supply of water. It is the “social center” of the neighborhood.

Katherine appears on the scene. She fills two earthen buckets and starts down the road for home. The young officer spies her.

He catches up with her and carries the buckets for her. He tells her of his adventures in the army. His gay uniform dazzles her. He promises to meet her every day while he is home on leave of absence and carry her water buckets for her.

Act Two

It is six months later. The pretty girl and the young officer have gone on a day’s outing up the side of one of the Alps. They are talking of love and marriage as they climb.

A rock on the path gives way. She begins to fall. There is a drop of more than 1,000 feet below her. Just in the nick of time, Buonzle drags her back to safety. They decide to wed.

Act Three

It is 50 years later. In the little Camden house on Twenty-fourth street, Mr. and Mrs. Buonzle are reminiscing. They discuss their wedding in 1878, just a few months after the thrilling rescue in the Alps.

Then their minds skip to the day they set sail for America, two years later. Then to Philadelphia, where they lived from 1880 until 1883, when they moved to Camden.

But a telegram from the only one of their 12 children still living, a young New York architect, brings them back to the present.

“Do you smoke? Do you drink? What do you think of flappers? Do you think you will live to a ripe old age? What is your advice to those who may wish to be as hale at 70 as you are?” he is asked.

He pulls out a large black cigar and lights it as his first reply. He admits quite candidly that he takes a nip of wine occasionally; he sees no harm in it. He hasn’t any ideas at all about the “younger generation;” he’s too busy cutting wood to bother about them. He fully expects to live to be 100 years old and he advises plenty of hard work as his recipe for longevity.

He explains, in leaving for the wood pile, that he is a retired machinist, but spends his time in the summer selling eggs laid by his chickens and in the winter chopping wood.

Seven Injured in Camden

In the earlier accident in Camden the automobile in which the injured were riding was dragged more than 75 yards by the shifting engine.

The more seriously injured in this accident are Albert Blair, 17, of 1144 N. 24th st., Camden, fractured skull; Robert Sharp, 16, of 1651 Alabama rd., Camden, fractured skull, and Joseph Godfrey, 10, of 208 Bailey st., Camden, mascot of the baseball team of which six other occupants of the car were members.

Those less seriously injured were: Donald Gondolf, 17, of 1462 Belleview ave., Camden, driver of the machine, lacerated face; Alphonso Burdulis, 19, of 207 Erie st., Camden, concussion of the brain; Samuel Cohen, 16, of 840 State st., Camden, lacerated head, and Richard Miller, 12, 1173 Princess ave., Camden, minor lacerations of hands.

All of the injured with the exception of Gondolf, Cohen and Miller are in Cooper Hospital.

All of the boyes except Godfrey are members of the Camden Athletics, a team in the Camden Minor Baseball League, and had gone to a baseball field at 36th st. and River road for a twilight game in the car driven by Gondolf, and owned by his father, Augustus.

Rain halted the game, and the sedan, with its seven occupants, had left the ball field only a few moments before the accident.

James Elberson obituary, 1016 North 24th Street, Philadelphia Inquirer November 21, 1915

As a result of heart disease, James Elberson, a former lieutenant in the Camden Fire Department, died suddenly at his home at 1016 North Twenty fourth street, Camden, Friday night. He was in the act of retiring when he became ill. Elberson became a member of No. 4 Engine Company in 1893. He was retired on a pension June 1 of this year.

Frederick Geissler, Ex-Councilman, Dies

Frederick Geissler, Ex-Councilman Dies, 930 North 24th Street, Camden Courier-Post June 17, 1941

After an illness of six months, former Councilman Frederick Geissler, 67, of the Eleventh ward, died Sunday at his home, 930 North Twenty-fourth street.

Mr. Geissler also served as a justice of the peace. He was a lifelong Republican. He was an inspector for the Camden Water Department and the New Jersey Water Company for years. During the past 10 years he conducted a barber shop at his home. He had lived in Camden 40 years.

Mr. Geissler was a member of Mozart Lodge No. 121, Free & Accepted Masons; the Gavel Club, Kane Arctic Lodge No. 115, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Lincoln Association and the German Maennerchor.

The funeral will be held at 1 p. m. Thursday at 804 North Twenty-seventh street. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery. He is survived by his widow, Lena.

Carlton Crismond, 44, of 740 North Twenty-fourth street, died in Cooper hospital Tuesday night after a short illness. Born in Philadelphia, he was a resident of Camden seven years.

Surviving are three brothers, Raymond, Philadelphia; Kenneth, Collingswood, and Gerald, Millville, and three sisters, Mrs. Thelma Pedrick, St. Denis; Mrs. Dorothy Turner, Camden, and Mrs. Leah Hoffman, Cape May Court House.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a. m. in the residence, where friends may call Friday night. Burial will be in Arlington cemetery, Pennsauken.

Roof Cave-in Perils Group Battling Blaze at Woman’s 3-Story Dwelling

Fire of unknown origin destroyed the home of Mrs. Edith Saunders, 744 North Twenty-fourth street, shortly after 9 a. m. Saturday.

Walter Eastlack, a member of Engine Company No. 9, Twenty-seventh and Federal streets, narrowly escaped injury when he fell four feet when the rear section of the roof collapsed. He refused to go to a hospital. Several other firemen were imperiled when the roof caved in.

When firemen arrived at the house, a three-story frame structure, flames were shooting out of it. Several persons in the crowd shouted that they thought a sick woman was upstairs.

Capt. Charles Watkins of Engine Company No. 11, Twenty-seventh street and Hayes avenue; Capt. Daniel Smith of Engine Company No. 9, and Patrolman Howard Bean rushed into the house and searched it, but found nobody there.

Firemen were still battling the blaze when Mrs. Saunders, 25, arrived. She collapsed and was taken to Cooper Hospital by police. She was detained for a time after being revived.

According to police, two children were smothered to death in a fire in the same house 13 years ago.

Firemen directed streams of water on the homes of Mrs. Charity Fox and William Cain, on either side of the house, after the flames threatened for a time to spread to them.

J. Requiem high mass at St. Joseph’s Church, at 10 o’clock. Interment at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

One Killed, One Hurt by Train - Philadelphia Inquirer, December 23, 1912

One man was killed and another seriously injured when an inbound train on the Amboy division of the Pennsylvania Railroad ran them down at Fish House, five miles above Camden, last night. The dead man was Peter Peffer, 20 years old, 628 North Twenty-fourth street, East Camden. The body was taken to the Morgue after being viewed by Coroner Bentley. Richard Dunn, 24 years old, 2818 Saunders street, East Camden, was lacerated and bruised about the body. He was taken to the Cooper Hospital. Both men were walking along the railroad tracks. It was dark and the train was upon them so quickly they were unable to leap out of the way. Peffer fell under the wheels and was crushed, and Dunn was hurled to the side of the tracks.

Howard Stone had a narrow escape from losing an arm while repairing a belt at the lead works in the East Side, Camden, yesterday. He was at work when the engine was started and his arm was caught in the belting. His cries attracted the attention of fellow-workmen, who threw the belt off.

Frank Jackson, 128 North Twenty-fourth street, who enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps last January at the Camden recruiting station, has been selected to take a course of airplane mechanics at the flying field at Mineola, N. Y. The course will require six months, and he will then become a specialized air mechanic. Jackson was one of 25 students selected from the Air Corps base at Mitchell Field. He was graduated in 1937 from Camden High School, where he was a member of the football and track teams.

Mrs. Lillian M. Stone, 74, of 125 N. 24th st., died suddenly at her home Saturday. She was a native of Camden.

Surviving are her husband, Howard B.; 2 sons, Herbert E., of Wilmington, Dela., and Robert D. Sr., of Erlton; 3 daughters, Mrs. George Allison and Mrs. James E. Reynolds, both of Miami, and Mrs. James M. Lindsay, of Camden; 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, William J. Orem, of Audubon, and Clifford Orem, of Elkton, Md., and a sister, Mrs. Robert Dexter, of Wilmington.

Services will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday at the Mason E. Bradley Funeral Home, 3203 Federal st., where friends may call Tuesday night. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Operations of a Model Are Satisfactory and a Large Apparatus Is Being Constructed to Make a More Practical Test—The Inventor Is Encouraged by His Employers in This City.

Camden is the home of a budding genius, who may some day be as famous as the lamented Darius Green. For five years Charles W. Clark, who lives at 124 North Twenty-fourth street, in that part of New Jersey known as Cramer Hill, has been experimenting upon flying machines. He is employed in the office of the Tygert Fertilizing Company, at 42 South Delaware avenue, and so confident have Mr. Clark’s employers been that he will devise something practical that at times they have given him a vacation for the purpose of conducting his experiments and encouraged his efforts by donations of money to defray expenses.

Mr. Clark is a blonde and only weighs 120 pounds. When seen at his home yesterday he talked freely about his experiments, but as he has not yet applied for a patent, he is unwilling to give a public exhibition.

BUILDING A BIG MACHINE.

The machine which Mr. Clark has devised will weigh about twenty pounds, and the material will cost but $25. His experiments are conducted with a toy, the weight of which is but a pound and a half, and when applied to the toy the machine is worked by clock-work. His operation is so satisfactory that a large machine capable of carrying a man is being constructed.

The flying machine consists of a mast of bamboo, curved at the bottom like an umbrella handle, upon which the saddle rests. Below the saddle is the pedal, which is similar to those which were used upon the old Star bicycles, the motion of the feet being up and down. The mast has a length of about nine feet.

Above the head of the operator, who sits astride the saddle, is a parachute made of oiled muslin, with a square bamboo frame. The front end of the parachute is higher than the back, so that the effect when the machine is in motion is to cause it to soar like a kite. At the front end of the parachute is the propeller, with two large funnel-shaped aluminium blades, the particular form of which Mr. Clark expects to get patented.

FOUR HUNDRED PER MINUTE.

The small wheel at the pedal connects with a larger one at the point where the shaft from the propeller intersects the mast, the gearing being so high that the operation of the pedals produces 400 or more revolutions per minute of the propeller. Braces extend from the mast to the propeller to strengthen it and to steady the parachute.

From the parchute [sic] and opposite the propeller is the steering apparatus, a flat triangular tail being used to guide the machine up or down, and a vertical rudder to turn the machine to the right or left. The tail and rudder are operated by cords, which extend to a point on the mast conveniently reached by the hand of the operator.

Camden also figures in the experiments which have been conducted by Professor Langley, of the Smithsonian Institution, as the Professor gets his engines built by a Camden firm, which has been able to build the lightest engines ever constructed in this country.

Trenton, June 10.—Seven dry agents were mobbed here tonight as they attempted to dismantle Ted and John’s place, 13 Senate street, one of the most noted cafes in the business section.

The crowd hurled rocks at the agents and Camden draymen employed to remove the bar fixtures. Agents Lamore and Ford Norton were both felled by rocks. George Kifferty, 33 North Twenty-fourth street, Camden, employed by the Troth Warehouse Company, Camden, was struck by one of the mob on the chin and knocked unconscious.

It was not until a riot call brought police reserves that the agents were able to continue with their work of wrecking the interior of the cafe.

The raiders found the doors of the place heavily barred when they arrived. They chopped their way into the place with axes and crowbars.

It is estimated that a crowd of 2500 was attracted to the scene. The crowd milled in a threatening manner until police reserves arrived. They let the air out of the automobiles and trucks of the raiding party. When one agent pulled his revolver Policeman Kulty stepped in and advised him to not use it on the crowd.

The raid was led by M. B. Kusteter, of the Camden office. Lawrence J. Gibbons, a bartender, was arrested and held in $1500 bail by U. S. Commissioner Marvin Spaulding.

The cafe was one of five raided by the agents. They visited a smoke shop at 20 South Warren street and seized a quantity of liquor. Daniel Sagella, 17 Annison street, and Sebastian Sagella, 463 Hamilton street, were arrested as proprietors and held in $1500 bail on charges of possession by liquor by Spaulding.

They raided the cafe of Stacy Smith, 101 Calhoun street, and he was held in $1500 bail. They seized a quantity of liquor at the home of John Newman, 17 Pennington avenue. Newman was held in $2000 bail.

A pretty wedding was solemnized in the East Side, Camden, last night when Miss Jennie Zane became the bride of John Morris. Rev. W. J. Beavon, of the Grace Baptist Church, performed the ceremony at the home of the bride, 23 North Twenty-fourth street. Only the relatives and a few friends of the couple attended the ceremony. Miss Mamie McClintock was bridesmaid and William Zane best man.

Mrs. Bertha L. Dahlberg, 61, a lifelong resident of Camden, died Monday in Cooper Hospital. She lived at 23 N. 24th st., and was a member of Calvary Bible Protestant Church.

Surviving are her husband, George L.; a son, Kenneth; a daughter, Mrs. Doris Jefferson, and four grandchildren, all of Camden.

Services will be held at 11 a. m. Friday at the Eichel Funeral Home, 60 S. 27th st., where friends may call Thursday night. Burial will be in New Camden Cemetery.

Cop Saves Children When Horse Bolts

Stung by a bee, a runaway horse endangered the lives of children in East Camden yesterday, struck two automobiles and was finally seized and halted by a policeman after a mad dash of two blocks.

The horse was attached to a wagon of the Scott Powell dairies and ran away while its driver, Hugh Wood, of Marlton Pike and Federal Streets, was delivering milk on South Twenty-fourth Street near Federal. The runaway occurred shortly before noon.

Suddenly, the animal reared in the shafts of the wagon and galloped north on South Twenty-fourth Street. Nearing Federal Street, the wagon struck the automobile of Howard Johnson, of 6037 Jefferson Avenue, Merchantville, and the truck of J. Roy McKay, 2402 Federal Street.

After crashing into the automobiles, the horse freed itself from the shafts as the wagon was upset in the street, strewing quarts of milk over the highway. As the frenzied animal continued its dash, mothers ran screaming into the street, seized their children and hurried with them to safety.

At Twenty-fifth and Federal Street, Policeman Walter Christy saw the animal and seized it by its bridle as it passed. Christy was dragged several feet before he could halt the horse, which suffered only slight leg injuries in the runaway.

Laib, Kay, Guthrie, Smith and Till to Be Retired Next Month

Petitions for pensions were granted yesterday to five members of the Camden police department.

The retiring men are: Lieutenant Charles Laib, in charge of the traffic bureau; Sergeant Charles J. “Jeff”. Kay, City Detectives Theodore “Dory” Guthrie and Howard Smith, and Patrolman J. Oscar Till.

The retirements are to become effective Jan. 1, it was announced after a special meeting of the pension committee in city hall. Mrs. Louise F. Walsh, secretary of the board, presented the five applications.

Eventual retirement of Lieut. Laib has been rumored in the department for several months, but it was not until recently that the report was regarded seriously. It is understood that his associates as late as yesterday had requested him to remain on duty. He is recognized as one of the most competent officers in the department. Failing health, however, is said to have prompted the pension committee to approve his application.

Successor Not Named

No announcement as to Lieut. Laib’s successor was made by Acting Chief John W. Golden.

Lieutenant Laib was appointed to the police force January 12, 1912, by former Mayor Charles H. Ellis. He was promoted to sergeant in 1916 and became a lieutenant in 1929. He has been in charge of the traffic department for a year, succeeding Captain Charles L. Humes, who has been named inspector of personnel.

Laib is but 51 years of age and is one of the youngest men in the department to apply for pension. If his pension is approved he will receive a monthly salary of $102.08. His home is with his wife at 76 South Twenty-fourth street.

For many years, Laib has been conducting a “one-man” relief organization and is recognized by charitable organizations throughout the city for his generosity among the destitute.

Each Thanksgiving and Christmas, he personally collects funds for dinners for the children of the Sheltering Arms Home, Seventeenth street and River avenue, and has also been responsible for the home getting a daily supply of bread from a Camden bakery for several years.

Kay Served 38 Years

Sergeant Kay is a veteran member of the police department and has been an officer for 38 years. He is 72 and lives at 606 North Fourth street. He will receive $90.65 monthly. He has been on the sick list for several months, recovering from injuries received in an accident.

Detective Smith is 58 and lives at 933 Penn street. For several years he was loaned to the county as a detective and helped in solving a number of Camden county murders. He was recently returned to the police department and Detective Fiore Troncone turned over to the county in his place. He will receive $90.65 a month. He was appointed March 20, 1906.

Detective Guthrie served 19 years as a policeman and two as a fireman. He resides at 570 Chestnut street. He will receive $92.50 per month, the additional $2 being added because he will not have the usual two per cent deducted for the pension fund.

Patrolman Till, who is 56, resides at 1002 North Twenty-fifth street. He served 25 years as a policeman and two and one-half years as a fireman. He is attached to the Second district. Till will receive $83.60 monthly.

The members of the pension committee who passed on the applications is headed by Mayor Roy R. Stewart and includes, Newton W. Ash, fire department representative; William Michalk [sic], police department representative; John J. Robinson, citizen member, and Mrs. Walsh.

Firemen are investigating a blaze which broke out early today in some trash in the basement of a two-story vacant frame house at 59 S. 24th st. District Chief Leonard Oshushek said the fire was confined to the basement. Owner of the house is Norma Schallus of 229 N. Delby st., Ventnor, according to Oshushek.

“I can’t do a thing with her since she joined the suffragists,” was Herman Miller’s plea when arraigned before Recorder Stackhouse yesterday on a charge of abusing his wife. Mrs. Miller told the court that her husband armed himself with a knife and chased his family from their home at 59 South Twenty-fourth street. “It seems to me that you are at fault,” said the Recorder, sentencing Miller to thirty days.

Six-year-old Benamin Ealdyga [sic]. 100 South Twenty-fourth street [sic]. hooped one ride too many. He is dead.

Witnesses said he dropped from the back of a wagon at Baird boulevard and Marlton avenue, directly in front of a slowly-moving automobile driven by Charles W. Daily, 41, of 111 West Central avenue, Moorestown, last night.

Francis J. Denver, of Brightwood, N. J., driving behind Daily told Detective William Boettcher that Daily passed him at a slow speed and was crossing Marlton avenue on a green traffic light when two boys dropped from the rear of a wagon crossing the boulevard against the lights.

One ran along with the wagon but Benamin. Denver told police stepped right into the right fender of Daily’s car and was crushed to the street. Daily stopped his car before the rear wheel had passed over the boy’s body, and the two motorists hurriedly took him to West Jersey Homeopathic Hospital.

He was dead of a fractured skull.

Coroner George D. Morgan opened inquiry into the fatality after Police Judge Pancoast held Daily in $1000 bail for grand jury action on an automobile manslaughter charge.

Fire Destroys Row of Houses in Camden

The blaze started in an abandoned house and spread. Several people were evacuated, including two described as squatters. One firefighter was injured.

A smoky fire that started last night in an abandoned Camden rowhouse spread to seven other houses, destroying the block, before it was brought under control by firefighters.

None of the residents on the block, South 24th Street, between Mickle Street and Carman Street, was hurt in the three-alarm blaze, Camden fire officials said. Firefighters banged on doors to summon residents, evacuating tenants from three inhabited houses. All eight buildings were destroyed.

Firefighter Ramon Melendez was taken to a hospital, suffering from smoke inhalation, said Camden Fire Chief Kenneth Penn.

Two women living as squatters in an abandoned house at 61 S. 24th St. were rescued by a ladder truck from the second floor, Penn said.

At another home, firefighters pulled a woman to safety after she tried to rescue her German shepherd, trapped inside. The firefighter retrieved the dog, limp from the smoke, and administered oxygen to the animal, said New Jersey police investigator Martin Schwartz.

“They had trouble controlling her. She wouldn’t leave the house because of the dog,” Schwartz said.

The woman’s other dog was pulled away by neighbors.

Schwartz is part of the state police task force that has patrolled Camden since January. Gov. Whitman announced last week that the officers would be leaving Camden this weekend.

The fire broke out at 7:21 p.m. at 63 S. 24th St., and wasn’t brought under control until two hours later, firefighters said. Penn said the fire spread quickly up the row of houses, traveling through a common attic area of the homes.

Penn said it was too soon to tell what sparked the fire.

Residents on Carman Street said they could hear firefighters shouting that there was no water coming from their hoses. Penn said the fire hydrants on the block could not produce enough water to fight the escalating blaze, and so the battalion chief quickly called in for backup pumpers. At no time, he said, were firefighters without water.

Maria Rodriguez, who lives a few blocks away and has friends on the block said one of the abandoned houses was known as a drug house where dealing took place day and night.

“You see it in the streets. You see the raids by the cops. Everything,” she said.

Two of the residents, Jose Jimenez and roommate Saul Cabral, escaped after smoke poured into their living room. They were unharmed. But the two men, struggling to make new lives after moving from El Salvador and Cuba, lost all their furniture, including the dining room set purchased last month.

“They had set up everything real nice,” Rodriguez said. “They started with nothing. It seems now they’ll have to start all over again.”

Several Firemen Hurt; Oil Plant and Homes Are Menaced

BLAZE WORST IN 18 MONTHS

Fire swept the wholesale store of Antrim Hardware Company, 1514 and 1516 Federal street last night, damaged the stock to the extent of $100,000, injured several firemen, menaced homes and the plant of the Standard Oil Company opposite. It was the first three-alarm fire in Camden since January, 1937.

One of the firemen, Ralph Bingaman, of Truck Company No. 1, was cut severely on the right hand and foot by falling glass and went to the Cooper Hospital. Another hoseman, Ray Smith, of headquarters, also was cut on the right hand but stuck to his fire fighting after his wounds were dressed.

Huge choking billows of smoke that rolled over the fighters balked them several times in their efforts to check the fire, but they remained at their posts and finally subdued the blaze after a battle of several hours.

Spread Rapidly

Chief John H. Lennox declared the fire started midway on the first floor from some unknown cause and spread so rapidly before its discovery efforts of the firemen were greatly hindered. Louis Gold, proprietor of the Federal Automobile Company, which adjoins the Antrim place, discovered the blaze and sent in an alarm at 7 p. m.

He then telephoned to Councilman E. Hulings Antrim, of Merchantville, treasurer of the concern, who raced to the fire, together with his mother, Mrs. Elwood Antrim, widow of the founder of the firm. Later B. Frank Antrim, president of the firm, arrived. The members of the family conferred and decided to reopen today their other store at Twenty-sixth and Federal streets, and to secure if possible an unoccupied floor of a chain store building to carry on the business. The stock, according to Antrim, was fully insured.

The firm was created on December 1, 1889, and had made arrangements to celebrate its golden anniversary. Mrs. Antrim, mother of the treasurer, stated she had half the anniversary number ready for publication “but the first fire we ever had has ruined all that now.”

Smashes Windows

When Gold, accompanied by his son, Marvin, discovered the fire, the latter smashed in two front windows on the first floor to permit the smoke to roll and and [sic] to prevent an explosion inside, he said. Meanwhile, Leroy Garrison, who lives at 50 South Twenty-fourth street, was driving past in his automobile.

He saw smoke rolling upward from the first floor and ran to the rear of the structure and threw open the door to permit the smoke to roll free at the rear.

Eight minutes after the first alarm was sounded Chief Lennox ordered a second, then a third at 7.33 p. m. Eight engines and two hook and ladder trucks responded and the fight began to keep the flames from spreading in the neighborhood. With the wind blowing north, the tanks of the oil company across the street seemed threatened, but the interior of the structure was bulked with two firewalls which held and gave the firemen a chance to get into action and beat down the flames.

Paint, chemicals and tar paper stored on the second floor made a dense, choking smoke that completely concelead [sic] the neighborhood and the hundreds of spectators that thronged the vicinity to watch the fire. Two tenants in nearby houses, Miss Agnes Mitchell and Mrs. Roy Dilks, 72, living in 1510 and 1508, respectively, were unaware of the fire right next door until the police sent them to safety.

Miss Mitchell said she was in the shed in the rear of her home and the first she heard of the fire was when a policeman ordered her to get out.

Refused to Leave

Mrs. Dilks, alone in the house at the time, refused to leave. She told the police she didn’t want to go, because the family had lived there but a month and her relatives were away. Finally she was urged to depart and did, finding refuge with Mrs. Albert Bowne, whose husband runs a printing shop a few doors below.

When Councilman Antrim arrived on the scene he attempted to rescue records of the firm which he said could never be replaced. Five times he entered the smoking building and five times he was turned back by the firemen.

Finally two firemen, Andrew Ballantine, who drives Chief Lennox, and Ladderman John Strauss, of Truck Company No. 4, forged their way through the dense smoke and retrieved the records.

Antrim fixed his damages from smoke and water at $100,000 which he said was the amount of stock in the building. Mrs. Antrim, his mother, stood under an umbrella near the burning building, and refused to go back.

“We’ll open tomorrow,” said the energetic woman, “and not let this bother us. This firm was created in 1889 when Hulings, my son, was four, and B. Frank Antrim, now president, and myself ran the businees [sic] and we’re not going to let this get us down, you bet.”

Antrim said he was the last person to leave the building at 5 p. m., and everything appeared to be all right then. The burglar alarm with which the building is equipped did not sound, so Antrim says no one could have entered the building after he departed.

After Engine Company No. 10 was sent home the apparatus was sideswiped by a traveling sandwich wagon, owned and driven by Emido Martelli, of 1315 Thurman street, at Eleventh street and Newton avenue.

Martelli’s wife and 25-months- old son were aboard the wagon at the time but none was injured. Police took Martelli to City Hall where he was asked for a statement as to the accident. According to the persons on the scene, Martelli was driving on Eleventh street when the engine came along Newton avenue, with its siren open.

The wagon driver did not seem to pay attention to the screams of the whistle and continued, the front of his car grazing the side of the apparatus.

When Engine Company No. 9, at Twenty-first and Federal streets, the first engine to respond to the alarm, reached the hydrant the firemen found an automobile parked there, and locked. They had to push the car out of the way, in order to get a hose to the hydrant.

Chief Lennox said the last time the department received a third alarm was when fire gutted the store of the McCrory Company at Broadway and Kaighn avenue.

Retired From Employ of Pennsy in 1929 After 53 Years of Service

Charles H. Truitt, 76, who was retired by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company in 1929 after 53 years of service, died suddenly Saturday at his home, 119 North Twenty-fourth street. With his wife, who survives, he celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary last January.

A native of Camden, Mr. Truitt began work for the railroad in 1876, when he was a boy of 17. His first job was that of fireman on tugboats. Later he worked on the company’s ferryboats plying between Camden and Philadelphia, and still later as an engineer in the company’s Philadelphia power plant. When retired on pension he was an engineer in the Camden power plant.

He was a member of the P. R. R. Ferry Relief Association, Camp No. 25, P. O. S. of A., Camp No. 15, P. O. of A., Rescue Council, No. 151, Jr. O. U. A. M.

Surviving, besides his wife, are three sons, Albert, Frank and Walter; a daughter, Mrs. Philip Lawyer, and several grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 2 p. m., at the home. Burial will be private in Arlington Cemetery.

priest, took over March 6, 1897 and remained till September, 1899. Father Hendricks came for about one week, until the coming of the Reverend Doctor Joseph Rathner, September 17, 1899.

In July of 1892, there arrived in little Saint Joseph’s parish a man who was destined to spend the next 28 years of his life here. A saintly, scholarly, humorous, and sympathetic priest, he became in truest sense a shepherd of his flock, knowing and watching over it, his people knowing and following his leadership. Though he has been gone from the east side for more than 13 years, the memory of Father Anthony C. Shuvlin’s wisdom, erudition, and overflowing charity is still fresh and strong. He was priest and nurse during the flu epidemic, quiet sustainer of the underfed and ill-clothed all during his pastorate, but especially during the post-war slump and the trying days of the stock market crash. Creed or color never influenced his judgment of a man, and when he left, his departure was lamented by people of all races and creeds who came within range of his ministry.

In October, 1915, the old church at 25th and Howell Streets was badly damaged by fire, and the contract for repairs was awarded to James W. Draper at a cost of $3,987.00. While the building was being renovated, Mass was said in the old theater at 24th and Federal Streets.

The Origin of St. Joseph’s Parish—Continued

After World War 1 [sic] a building boom started in East Camden. The congregation of Saint Joseph’s parish grew rapidly, and it became necessary to seek a new site for a Church and School.

Father Shuvlin was directed to take the site formerly occupied by Saint Patrick’s cemetery. He purchased this ground for $55,000.00. Those who had been buried there were removed principally to Calvary cemetery. Plans for a fine school building were drawn up by Mr. H. G. Dagit, and the contract for its construction was let to the Farrell and Rath Company of Philadelphia, for the sum of $186,687, which included all but heating. The heating contract was let separately for $11,461.00, the cost of furnishings about $25,000.00, which brought the debt at the time to a total of $223,148.00. The new convents and rectory were to come later.

The new building, completed in 1929, was intended primarily as a total school unit. Father Shuvlin had hoped to build a basement church facing Federal Street, but events in 1929 forestalled that step.

Early in January, 1930, the parishioners of Saint Joseph’s were shocked to hear from Father Shuvlin that he had received notification of transfer to Riverside. The new pastor, the Rev. Charles G. McCorristin, arrived in the middle of January, 1930, to take up the weighty burden of the now sizeable and deeply indebted
