Camden Police Raid Alleged Speak-Easy — Philadelphia Inquirer, August 18, 1902

Police Captain Stanley and a squad of officers last night made a raid on an alleged speak-easy at the foot of Jackson street, Camden, and captured Patrick Holden, the supposed proprietor, and two others.

The police were notified that a crowd of men were having a high old time in Holden’s boat house at Jackson street. When the raid was made several hundred persons gathered about and most of the inmates escaped. Four cases and one tub of beer, beside some whisky, were found.

Unconscious for the past three days, Mrs. Edith Grover, 50 years old, of No. 1 boathouse, foot of Jackson street, Camden, is in Cooper Hospital. The nature of her malady has not been determined, but in the meantime Detective Brothers has taken into custody James Gehan, 50 years old, who is said to have lived with the woman.

Husband Saves Wife and Babe in Blaze — Camden Courier-Post, January 25, 1930

Trapped with his wife and baby daughter in their blazing bungalow at the foot of Jackson street, Harry Perkins, 27, saved their lives yesterday afternoon by breaking a window with his hand and carrying them to the street.

Perkins, his wife, Edith, and baby, Edith, 2, were in a room off the kitchen through which they had to pass to reach the only door. An overheated coal stove is believed to have set fire to the kitchen which suddenly burst into flames.

Unable to reach the door, Perkins thrust his hand through the window, climbed out with the baby and assisted his wife to climb out after him.

Firemen were unable to save the bungalow which was destroyed at a loss of more than $1500. Perkins was treated for cuts at West Jersey Homeopathic Hospital.

J. Frank Johnson, of 1713 Broadway, Camden, was saved from drowning off the Jackson street wharf yesterday by former Policeman Thomas Pooley and Frank Jordan. Recently Johnson built a launch and yesterday he concluded to try it out on the Delaware. While hoisting the anchor he lost his balance and fell overboard. Unable to swim, he was just disappearing beneath the surface of the water when his rescuers reached him and brought him ashore.

William Rose, Jr., 7 years old, son of Fireman William Rose, of 426 Jackson street, who was threatened with tetanus, was greatly improved last night.

Six-alarm fire strikes Camden storage complex — Camden Courier-Post, August 15, 1982

CAMDEN — A six-alarm fire destroyed buildings and trucks at the rear of Gallagher’s Warehouse at 301 Jackson St. here at about 8 p.m. yesterday.

The property is owned by Peter J. DelGrande, longtime city Republican committee chairman and a former Camden County freeholder. The fire came one day after the Camden City Fire Department and the city attorney’s office had been in court to try to force removal of rolls of waste paper belonging to the Pon-Pas Waste Removal Corp., which occupied the rear building, Fire Chief John Mogck said.

A fire at another Pon-Pas facility at State Street and River Road two months ago destroyed that building.

Both fires are being investigated for arson, fire officials said.

DelGrande’s business had been cited for a fire hazard in the building, also, but that citation was postponed Friday. “Now we won’t have to worry about it,” Mogck said.

During the fire, exploding acetylene tanks sent trucks flying 50 feet or more in the air like twisters of fire, said Camden Patrolman Jim Mulligan. A dark column of smoke brought about 200 spectators from as far away as Medford.

All Camden City fire trucks were called to the scene and 11 responded from neighboring towns to fight the blaze.

At first firefighters were unable to get enough water pressure to put water on the fire and had to lay hose for several thousand feet, firefighter Nelson Savage said. A Philadelphia fire boat also responded and pumped water four blocks from the river through a hose.

The fire also destroyed a number of trucks and a load of plywood belonging to Freight Consultant Trucking Co. The firm’s owner, Ben DiMedio, said the damage could be as much as $100,000. He rented the space from DelGrande.

DelGrande filed for bankruptcy of the business in February. The bankruptcy application asked court approval to pay for repairs to the building, including a new roof and modernization of the sprinkler system.

Eric DelGrande, son of the property owner, said his father would have no comment on the fire.

FOUR OF ROBBER BAND START SERVING TERMS — Camden Courier-Post, June 2, 1933 — 420 Jackson Street

Woodbury, June 1.—The four members of Camden’s “Band of Forty Thieves,” who were sentenced to state prison and Rahway Reformatory last Monday by Judge J. Forman Sinnickson for a gas station robbery, were taken to the institutions today by Sheriff William A. Downer and deputies.

Albert Buondonno, 16, of 1635 Broadway; Bruno Brzozowski, 17, of 420 Jackson street, and Marino Brandemarte, 17, of 851 Van Hook Street, are to serve two to three years in prison, while Metro Pukas, 17, of 668 Central avenue, will remain in the reformatory. C. Walter Frank, Pedricktown, sentenced to serve a similar sentence in prison for receiving stolen goods, also was taken to Trenton.

NEWS OF A DAY IN THE CITY OF CAMDEN

Passengers on the Cape May express of the West Jersey and Seashore Railroad Company, due in Camden at 9 o'clock, were badly shaken up yesterday when the train struck a heavily laden wagon at the Kaign avenue crossing. The wagon, belonging to the Camden Lime Company, was being driven by Philip Dorsey, of 835 Bridge avenue. As he reached the track he saw the train bearing down on him. Almost at the same instant the gates were lowered and the team was imprisoned between them. The resulting crash carried the horse fifty feet and crushed its head, while the wagon was reduced to kindling wood. Dorsey escaped miraculously by dropping from his seat within a few inches of the wheels of the train.

George Willingmire, for whom the police have been looking for several weeks on a charge of stabbing Leo Hubner, who roomed with him at Ninth and Chestnut streets, was committed to the county jail by Recorder Stackhouse, in Camden, yesterday, in default of $500 bail. Willingmire, who has already served a term in State prison for stabbing two women, was located by Police Captain Stanley. While the latter was taking his prisoner to jail Willingmire attempted to escape. There was a desperate struggle, in which the bluecoat overpowered the man.

Clarence Burrows, 15 years old, of 423 Mickle street, was the youth who met such a horrible death beneath the wheels of a freight train at Broadway and Bridge avenue, Camden, Wednesday night. He and a companion had made a wager they could ride to Palmyra and back without paying their fares. They were on their return trip on the freight train when Burrows fell beneath the wheels.

Theodore Turner, 50 years old, and B. H. Sharp, 31 years old, both of 223 North Eighth street, were seriously injured yesterday when a wagon they were driving was struck by a trolley car at Ninth and Market streets, Camden. Both men were hurled from their seats and thrown directly in front of the car. They were dragged nearly a square by the fender before the motorman could stop the car. They were taken to the Cooper Hospital, where it was found they had sustained almost similar injuries.

An unknown man, about 36 years old, was drowned in the Cooper Creek, at the State street bridge, Camden, yesterday, while two boys witnessed his fate. The man was fishing and he attempted to walk out on a moss-covered log to cast his line. Slipping, he struck his head and then sank from sight. Half an hour later the body was recovered. The body was removed to the morgue.

Henry Beach, 15 years old, of 791 Line street, is seriously ill at his home with blood poisoning. Two weeks ago he lacerated his hand at the Camden Iron Works. White lead got into the wound, which resulted in the development of the disease.

Trolley car No. 134, of the Broadway line of the Camden and Suburban Railway Company, by a narrow margin escaped being struck by a train at the Bridge avenue crossing yesterday. At the time there were many passengers aboard the car and a small panic ensued.

Motor Vehicle Agent Forsythe has taken in over $7000 thus far in registering autos and licensing drivers.

Freeholder Lawrence Rhoades, who was so seriously ill that his death was expected, is now recovering.

Charged with knocking out several teeth of Jacob Miskelly during a fight, Frank Harris was held in $300 bail by Recorder Stackhouse yesterday.

A complaining witness was held in $500 bail for the grand jury in police court yesterday when a man he had arrested for stealing his car testified he had bought whisky from him.

Henry Benzuk, 32, 502 Jackson street, charged James Draper, 36, 1676 Ferry avenue, with stealing his new automobile. Draper denied stealing the car and said Benzuk had loaned it to him. He testified he bought liquor from Benzuk. Despite the fact that Draper did not wish to make complaint, Benzuk was held.

Home Intruder Arrested — Philadelphia Inquirer, December 4, 1917 — 554 Jackson Street

When Ernest Thom, of 554 Jackson street, Camden, early yesterday, found a man in his parlor and grappled with him, furniture was knocked about and wrecked, while Thom was bitten by the intruder. Miles, a policeman, was summoned and he subdued the stranger, who proved to be Daniel Geegan, 41 years old, a character well known to the police. He was later sent to jail for three months by Recorder Stackhouse. Thom had bruises, cuts and bites treated at Cooper Hospital.

During Easter festivities at the home of John Gushue, 558 Jackson street, last evening, one of the party upset a coal oil lamp. Gushue picked the lamp up and threw it through a window, badly burning his right hand.

The blazing oil set fire to a couch and window draperies. Kaighn avenue and Broadway companies responded to the alarm and put the fire out with but small loss.

Chester Gandy, Walter Bunting and Ernest Schuesse were arrested late last night in Camden charged with inciting to riot and were held in bail for a hearing. The men are alleged to have been participants in a disturbance created at an Indian show holding forth at Broadway and Viola street.

CABARET SINGER IS HELD ON BAD CHECK CHARGE — 838 Jackson Street

Charged with obtaining money under false pretense and forging a friend’s signature on two checks a year ago, a Camden cabaret singer is in the county jail in default of $300 bail.

Inez Wiley, 25, of 321 Stevens Street, was arrested by Herbert Kayser and Walter Schock of Haddon Heights police on complaint of Mrs. Ora Curry, 837 Jackson Street, a former domestic in the household of Mrs. Willat Lippincott, Station Avenue, Haddon Heights.

Mrs. Curry testified before Police Recorder Joseph A. Patton, that while working for Mrs. Lippincott she became ill and was compelled to remain at her home for a number of weeks. During that time, she said, her friend, Inez Wiley, visited Mrs. Lippincott and without Mrs. Curry’s knowledge, requested financial assistance. On two occasions Mrs. Lippincott gave the woman checks to the order of Mrs. Curry to the amount of four and five dollars respectively. These checks had been cashed by the woman and endorsed with Mrs. Curry’s forged signature, according to Mrs. Curry. Meeting Mrs. Lippincott after many months she learned the truth and caused the Wiley woman’s arrest.

Joseph Kondracki, of 1015 Jackson st., was pronounced dead Monday at West Jersey Hospital after he suffered a heart attack. Born in Poland, he was a Camden resident 45 years. He retired three years ago. Mr. Kondracki is survived by his wife, Sophie.

Requiem high Mass will be sung Saturday at 9 a.m. in St. Joseph’s R.C. Church, 10th and Mechanic sts. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Chews Landing, under direction of the Stanley A. Zembruski Funeral Home, Camden.

WOMAN AND 2 MEN SEIZED IN NUMBERS — Slips Representing $138 Play Reported Taken in Jackson Street House — Camden Courier-Post, February 25, 1938 — 1039 Jackson Street

Two men and a woman were arrested and numbers slips representing play of $138 were seized in a raid on a house at 1039 Jackson Street yesterday. Detectives described the place as a “drop” for the slips and said they believed they were left there by writers and delivered to “banks” at night.

Those arrested gave names and addresses of Joseph Orlowski, 31, of the Jackson Street address; Mary Stanska, 29, of 1275 Chase Street, and John Pawela, 21, of 1564 Louis Street. All were charged with violating the State Crimes Act pertaining to gambling.

The raid was made by City Detectives Thomas Murphy, Jr., and Gustav Koerner and Policemen James McLaughlin and Raymond Carson. Besides the slips, the detectives seized $52.97 in money lying on a table.

Survivors include his wife, Veronika; a son, Lewis of Camden; two daughters, Mrs. Felicia Nowak of Westmont and Mrs. Stella Gonski of Camden, and six grandchildren.

A South Camden boy is in West Jersey Homeopathic Hospital suffering from injuries to the head, face and legs caused when he was struck yesterday by the car of Dr. Benjamin Wroblewski, of 1166 Thurman Street.

The injured child is Raymond Hozalski, 8, of 1160 Jackson Street. Hospital records reveal that the child was attempting to cross the roadway at Tenth and Thurman streets when struck. The driver of the car took the boy to the hospital and reported the accident to police.

Henry P. Fach, Sr., well known in South Camden and one of the oldest members of Whitman Park Improvement Association, died suddenly in his home, 1184 Jackson street, last night. Fach had been ailing for several months, but had not been seriously ill. In fact, he attended the weekly meeting of the Whitman Park I. A. Monday night, and was in fine spirits.

For several years he served as janitor in Camden high school, a position he resigned about three months ago on the advice of his physician. He is survived by a widow, Mrs. Hilda Fach, and three children: Mrs. Florence Butterfoss, Charles Fach and Henry Fact [sic], Jr.

When I was little my grandmother had a family of box turtles there. They burrowed under the ground when it was cold out, and when they couldn’t find enough bugs to eat we fed them bologna. My grandmother walked everywhere and she used to take me with her to St. Joe’s Polish Catholic church to do the novena. Boy, those little old ladies could pray!

Driver Caught in Chase — Camden Courier-Post, January 30, 1930 — 1209 Jackson Street

An alleged hit-run driver was captured after a chase by a city fireman in the middle of the Camden bridge.

Wallace Duvall, 31, of 1469 Mt. Ephraim avenue, was crossing Seventh and Penn streets when he was struck by an automobile. According to Duvall and George Garner, a fireman attached to the Twenty-seventh and Federal streets fire house, the driver failed to stop. Garner followed in his car, chased the driver half way across the bridge and arrested him.

Duvall was taken to Cooper Hospital by Harrison M. Davenport, 1209 Jackson street, where he is suffering from cuts and bruises.

Requiem high mass for Stanislaw Stypinski, a retired cabinet maker for RCA Camden for 30 years, will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Camden.

Mr. Stypinski, who lived at 1327 Jackson St., Camden, died on Sunday in the West Jersey Hospital Northern Division, Camden. He was a member of the Polish National Alliance Group 323, the Polish-American Citizens Club, The Polish Roman Catholic Union 153 and the N.J. Civil Defense Corps.

Surviving are his wife, Stefania; a daughter, Mrs. Estelle Orlik of Oaklyn; a grandson, two brothers and a sister.

A hearing on drunken driving charges against John Czetyrka, 48, of 1176 Morton street, was ordered held over until tomorrow in Police Court yesterday.

The charges were lodged following an accident at Ninth street near Fairmount street Sunday at 3 a.m., when an auto assertedly driven by Czetyrka hit the car of Elwood Urbanowicz, of 1326 Jackson street, then continued going until it crashed into a pole on Fairmount street. The girl testified she recognized Meloni as the man who halted his auto on Pine street Tuesday afternoon and tried to induce her to ride with him.

More than 1500 persons crowded New Camden cemetery today at the military funeral of Stephen Kawczynski, World War veteran, who died last Friday after a long illness.

Another large crowd filled the street in front of St. Joseph’s Polish church, Tenth and Mechanic streets, when solemn requiem mass was celebrated for the former soldier.

Kawczynski, who was 36, lived at 1347 Jackson street. He served a year in France and was honorably discharged in April, 1919. He is survived by his widow, Josephine, and a daughter, Lucy, 7.

MAN GIVEN 30 DAYS IN STOLEN GOODS CASE — Camden Courier-Post, June 20, 1933 — 1359 Jackson Street

Judge Samuel M. Shay yesterday sentenced Spencer Murray, 52, of 1181 Sycamore Street, to 80 days in the county jail after finding him guilty of receiving stolen goods. Murray is alleged to have sold $2000 worth of copper template stolen April 1 from the Camden Pottery Company, Mt. Vernon and Orchard Streets, to a Philadelphia junk dealer. He received about $3.25 for it, he said, after buying it for $2.95 from Paul K. Obylinski, 16, of 1506 Norris Street, and Edward Wisniewski, 17, of 1359 Jackson Street. The two youths were convicted recently of the theft.
