Woodland Avenue

Once ran east from Broadway to South 10th Street; 500 block was part of 'The Terraces'
Page Contents

Woodland Avenue

Woodland Avenue at one time ran east from Broadway, opposite the New York Shipbuilding Corporation shipyards, through to South 10th Street, north of Morgan Street. The 500 block of Woodland Avenue was one of the blocks in what was known as “The Terraces,” four blocks of row houses that included the 500 blocks of Lester Terrace, Gordon Terrace, and Fairview Street. Many of these homes had been abandoned by 1990, and were all for the most part razed by the end of the decade. The balance of the homes, perhaps a dozen or so, were acquired by local government and had been taken down by the end of 2008.

551 Woodland Avenue

I grew up in Fairview in the 1960’s, however my grandparents lived at 551 Woodland Ave over in the Terraces. My father was a Camden Fireman and my mother a waitress, so whenever their work schedules collided (which was often) I spent time with my grandparents over on the Terraces. It was like a 2nd home to me.

My grandfather worked at the New York Shipbuilding Corporation yard, so in the early 60’s he and my grandmother moved from Fairview over to the Terraces so that he could be closer to his job. I remember him coming home for lunch everyday.

Woodland Avenue was the very last street in the Terraces. Out the backdoor of my grandparents house was an open field, then train tracks and the old Camden Brewery. Across the street from the Brewery was Cadillac Dog Food. I remember standing on my grandparents back porch and watching while they imploded the Brewery, then a few years later Cadillac Dog Food.

The trains that came out of the NYSY railyard would have to slow way down to negotiate the southern spur (curve). As kids we used to hide in the tall grass right at the curve and wait for them to slow down. Then we would jump on and ride the train down to the street crossing at Morgan Blvd. One of the worst “tannings” I ever got was when my grandmother saw me do it once. First I got it from her, then again when my parents picked me up to go home.

679 Woodland Avenue — Ed & Helen Grochowski

Ed and Helen Grochowski on the porch at 679 Woodland Avenue

The red steps are our porch on 679 Woodland Ave. Morgan village Camden New Jersey. The people in the picture are my grandparents Ed and Helen Grochowski. They lived there before us.

I believe we lived there 1967 through 1973? I know I went to H.B. Wilson kindergarten through fifth grade. My grandfather Hallahan was one of the crossing guards. I remember a lot of the neighbors names if you need them on Woodland Avenue on both sides. I’m still in touch with my best friend Maureen Laughery who lived right across the street from me. All us kids on Woodland Avenue would play all day long till dark. We would play jacks and go from porch to porch setting up dolls and our furniture, jumping rope and the big thing was playing in the shipyard. Me and my brother loved playing in the shipyard especially when it snowed — it would be so windy out there he’s three years younger than me he’d have to hold onto the fire hydrant so he wouldn’t blow away. The trains were running at that time and Campbell Soup was running. I loved hearing the train whistle and a lot of times I would see my uncle Steve driving the trains! I truly loved those days on Woodland Avenue.

ARM BROKEN BY A TWIST

Limb Snapped When Pitcher Sent a Curved Ball

John Jamison, aged 20 years, of 680 Woodland avenue, Camden, was injured in a peculiar manner at Seventh and Fairview streets yesterday, during a game of ball. Jamison is a pitcher and just after throwing a speedy out curve, his arm fell limp by his side. A near by physician examined the arm and found his arm broken above the elbow. At the Cooper Hospital, where he was taken, the doctors said the fracture was caused by a sudden twist of the arm.

4 Boys Saved In Creek at Gloucester, Camden Courier-Post, January 3, 1955

4 BOYS SAVED IN CREEK AT GLOUCESTER

Rescue Squad Finds 2 in Mud, Others in Boat

Four “shipwrecked” boys were saved by the Highland Park Rescue Squad Sunday night from Newton Creek at the foot of Yale ave., Gloucester City.

It was shortly before 6 p. m. when Mrs. Anna Woodling, who lives nearby, telephoned police she heard cries for help from the creek and from her doorway she could see several persons in a rowboat.

Sgt. Leon Mealey, of Gloucester police, dispatched the rescue squad to the scene. The squad found two of the boys, Larry Ludwick, 15, of 692 Woodland ave., and William Hamilton, 14, of 2269 S. 7th st., both of Camden, both overboard, and stuck waist deep in mud and water about 30 feet from shore.

Two other boys, Larry’s brother, Robert, 13, and Robert Carey, 14, of 726 Woodland ave., also of Camden, were in the rowboat, but unable to move it close to those overboard with makeshift board paddles.

The rescuers, using hip boots, waded in and tossed a line to the boys in the boat, then pulled the craft close to those overboard so they could climb in. A winch on the rescue truck rolled the line in.

The four were taken to the Gloucester police station, got a lecture from Sgt. Mealey, were fed hot coffee and waited until their parents took them dry clothing.

At the police station the boys explained they found the rowboat tied to a dredge, anchored in the creek, and owned by a contractor on the Gloucester Bridge. They said they cut the rowboat loose and paddled it with boards until they began having trouble with the tide.

Then, they said, Larry slipped and fell overboard, William went to his rescue, and both got stuck in the mud while the boat drifted from them.

Father Is Accused of Injuring Infant Son

Philadelphia Inquirer

710 Woodland Avenue — Anthony Baker

Father Is Accused of Injuring Infant Son, Philadelphia Inquirer, February 6, 1913

FATHER IS ACCUSED OF INJURING INFANT SON

Suffering from the last stages of spinal meningitis, Clarence Baker, 3 months old, of 710 Woodland avenue, was taken to the Cooper Hospital, Camden, last night in a dying condition.

As a result of a story told by Mrs. J. Higgins, an aunt, of 142 South Tenth street, the father of the infant, Anthony Baker, was arrested by Detective Brothers and held pending a further investigation.

Mrs. Higgins told Dr. Paul Markley at the hospital that some night since the father, while on a drunken rampage, threw the little one on the floor. From this the disease is supposed to have developed, Dr. Markley stating to the police that it was hardly likely the infant can recover.

When arrested Baker emphatically denied the story of Mrs. Higgins, asserting he loved his little son and would not harm him.

‘Kid’ Roller Skates Jolt Love Off Base

Camden Courier-Post

728 Woodland Avenue — Mrs. Edna N. Richards McNeece

A roller-skating child bride who thought her 19 year old husband “too old” for her was well on her way to being divorced yesterday by Al Daidone, 29, of 424 Clinton street.

Advisory Master Knight recommended a decree for Daidone. His wife, Fannie, lives near Scranton, Pa., with their child, Catherine, nine. Mrs. Daidone is now 25. They were married when she was not yet 15 and he only 19, Daidone testified. But instead of settling down, he said, his wife was roller skating day and night, and complained that he was too old. She deserted him, he said, in the Fall of 1928.

Knight also advised a decree for Mrs. Clara Zoeller Wall Safford, of 1269 Atlantic avenue, from Robert H., also known as Cornelius J. Linskey. They were married Feb. 10, 1923 and he deserted her in December, 1929, she said. World war bonus papers came to him in the name of Linskey, Mrs. Safford testified, but he never explained why.

A decree was recommended for Mrs. Edna N. Richards McNeece from William G. McNeece of Baltimore. They eloped to Elkton, Md., March 9, 1935, and he deserted her less than three months later. She lives at 728 Woodland avenue.

Fire Death of Woman Is Probed

Camden Courier-Post

830 Woodland Avenue — Elizabeth McLeish

Fire Death of Woman Is Probed, Camden Courier-Post, November 29, 1971

An investigation into the death of a 37-year-old Camden woman, found in her burning home Saturday evening, is being conducted by the Camden firemarshal and detective bureau.

An autopsy was scheduled today for Mrs. Elizabeth McLeish, 830 Woodland Ave. She was found by firemen, sitting at her kitchen table, burned to death.

Fire Marshal Harold Pike said he enlisted the aid of the detective bureau because he was unable to determine why Mrs. McLeish had been unable to escape the burning house.

Neighbors discovered the fire at 6:18 p.m., according to Pike. He said the flames had started in a cardboard box filled with trash in a rear shed of the two-story, single family house.

Pike said when firemen managed to get into the house, there was intense heat that slowed their progress.

Mrs. McLeish was alone in the house at the time of the fire, according to Pike. Her mother, Mrs. Janice Smalls, and two small children live in the same house but were not home, he said.

The entire first floor of the house was destroyed, Pike said.

Camden County medical investigator Joseph Bocco ordered the body removed to the morgue for the autopsy.

Money Showered on Children of Woman Struck by a Train

While picking coal along the tracks with her three little children, Mrs. Amelia Fisher, aged 47 years, of 942 Woodland avenue, Camden, was struck by the inbound express of the Atlantic City Railroad, near Broadway and Bulson street, yesterday, and outside of a severe shaking up escaped with a cut in the back about ten inches long. Cooper Hospital physicians say she will be all right in a short time.

When the engine pilot struck the woman she was hurled down an embankment. Train hands hurried to the scene expecting to find her dead body, but were surprised to see her sitting up with her three little children with their arms about her, crying as if their hearts would break. When the passengers learned of the accident dimes, nickels, quarters and half-dollars were showered on the little ones.
