GLOUCESTER MAN HELD, ADMITS TAKING AUTO

Augustus Rollo, 19, of 507 Ferry avenue, Gloucester, admitted in Gloucester police court yesterday before Recorder Oliver J. Stetser that he was the driver of the automobile which Monday night failed to halt until fired upon by a Gloucester policeman.

Rollo confessed that he took the car from the garage of Carl Dolenti, 20, of Camden. Later, he said, he picked up Edward Trottman, 25, of 704 Sylvan street, Camden, and Walter Voitovick, of 1428 Broadway, Camden. He said he escaped when the others were arrested. Trottman and Voitovick accused Dolenti of being the driver.

Rollo was turned over to Camden detectives.

Jackpot Lifts Burden: $600 C-P Prize Arrives in Time To Pay Hospital

YOU USUALLY WIN SOMETHING when you don’t need it, but not so with Mrs. Muriel Bobkowski. She won third prize—$600—in the Courier-Post Lucky 31 Jackpot Puzzle Contest and received it just as her husband returned from a hospital. Making payment here is Harold M. Snyder, Courier-Post circulation manager.

By Victor Keller

The $600 third prize in The Courier-Post’s Lucky Jackpot Contest was won by Mrs. Muriel Bobkowski, of 754 Sylvan st., Camden, at the world’s luckiest moment.

The day she learned some prize money was in store for her, she got her husband back from the hospital.

Although the amount was a happy surprise, she said the whole $600 will go toward doctors’ bills and hospital expenses. “It will put us back in health,” she declared.

Gunman Gets $40 in Store On Broadway — Courier-Post, September 24, 1957

GUNMAN GETS $40 IN STORE ON BROADWAY

A gun-wielding bandit held up a Broadway shop shortly before 9 a.m. today and escaped with about $40 after binding and gagging a woman clerk.

Mrs. Elsie Bobkowski, 754 Sylvan st., the clerk, told police she opened the Style Shop, 703 Broadway, a few minutes before 9 a.m. As she opened the door, she told police, a tall Negro, about 18, entered and asked for two nickels for a dime. As she went to the cash register, the bandit whipped out a “small, black gun” and said, “This is a holdup.”

Empties Cash Register

Mrs. Bobkowski said the bandit emptied the cash register, which contained about $40. He asked for her handbag but she convinced him she did not have it with her. The bandit then forced Mrs. Bobkowski into a small room behind the store, bound her hands and feet with leather thongs which he had taken with him. He then gagged her with a woman’s kerchief which he also had in his possession. Mrs. Bobkowski said the bandit then sat her down in a chair and fled.

Unties Self

After struggling with her bonds for about 15 minutes, she said, she managed to free herself and ran out into the street screaming. Daniel Finkel, owner of the New York Fur Factory, 701 Broadway, ran to Mrs. Bobkowski’s aid and called police. Ptl. Frank Mignogna and Louis Quaranto responded to the call and searched the neighborhood in an effort to apprehend the gunman, but without success.

Mrs. Bobkowski said the bandit wore a black suit, white shirt and white tie and was carrying books which gave him the appearance of a student.

Stech Transportation Company / Stech Group, Inc. — 961 Sylvan Street (1935–2013)

For over 70 years, The Stech Group has long been a family owned and operated company proud of their heritage and service in the community. Started in 1935, Frank Stech Sr. began this warehouse, transportation and distribution business as a local cartage company with one truck. Many of its first customers were the canning and food industries headquartered in nearby Camden, NJ. As the Stech Group’s reputation for quality, honesty and value grew, so did its mission. Opening their first warehouse in 1955, they were quickly able to establish themselves as an integral part of their customers’ supply chain.

In 1979, Frank Stech passed control on to his sons, William Stech and Frank Stech, Jr. With the growth of the business, Frank and Bill split company responsibilities with Bill heading the warehouse company (Standard Warehouse and Mid-Atlantic Distribution) and Frank heading the trucking and logistics companies (F&W Transportation, Mid-Atlantic Logistics and Stech Transportation).
