Introduction
Hyde’s Cafe, also known as Hyde’s Saloon and Hyde’s Tavern, at 1600 South 6th Street first appears in Camden City Directories in 1892, and was still trading under that name as late as 1956. The Hyde family had been in the bar business in Camden’s 8th Ward for many years. Grandfather Richard Hyde (1840–1865) and father Joseph F. Hyde Sr. (1857–3/9/1927) were both well known in the tavern trade in the city.
Joseph Hyde Sr. appears in the Camden NJ City Directories as early as 1887. He lived at 904 Walnut Street in the late 1880s and early 1890s. This is where he lived with wife Eliza when Joseph Jr. was born, on October 12, 1889. Another son, John Francis “Frank” Hyde, came about five years later. In 1891 Joseph Hyde Sr. appears in the Camden City Directories at 510 Jackson Street, where he had a lager beer saloon. By 1910 the family had moved to 1600 Fillmore Street, around the corner from the saloon Joe Sr. owned at 1600 South 6th Street.
When his father could no longer run the business, Joseph Hyde Jr. took over. Hyde’s Saloon was still operating into the 1950s. Joseph Hyde Jr. and his wife Tillie both passed away in 1955. Their family kept the business for at least a year before selling the bar.

Mrs. Elizabeth Hyde, wife of Joseph Hyde, of 1600 South Sixth street, who was taken to Presbyterian Hospital, Twenty-ninth street and Powelton avenue, Philadelphia, for treatment for internal trouble, is reported as considerably improved. This will prove good news to her large list of friends.

Solemn requiem mass will be held Saturday morning at the Church of the Sacred Heart for former Freeholder Joseph Hyde, who died at his home, 1660 South Sixth street, as the result of a sudden stroke. Hyde, a well known Eighth Ward saloonman, is survived by his widow, Elizabeth, and his sons, Frank, former city probation officer, and Joseph, Jr. He was a member of Camden Lodge No. 293, B. P. O. E. and Camden Aerie, No. 65, F. O. E.
Wife Cut Off With $100 in Joseph Hyde’s Will

Leaving the bulk of his $10,000 estate to two sons, Joseph Hyde, Eighth Ward freeholder and saloonkeeper, who died two weeks ago, left his widow, Elizabeth $100. The will was probated yesterday by Surrogate George W. Whyte. Although she is only given $100 under the probate of the will Mrs. Hyde will legally receive her dower right in her husband’s real estate which is estimated in value at $8,000.
The two sons who share in the estate are Joseph Hyde, Jr., and John Francis Hyde. The latter for many years was chief probation officer of Camden County. He lives in Woodlynne.
The testator was for many years a freeholder from the Eighth Ward. For many years he operated a saloon at Sixth and Jackson street.
Several months ago because of his impaired health his wife was appointed guardian for his estate.
Mrs. Elizabeth Hyde Succumbs to Illness

After a lengthy illness Mrs. Elizabeth Hyde, widow of former Freeholder Joseph F. Hyde, died at her home at 1644 South Sixth street. Her husband was proprietor of a saloon at Sixth and Jackson streets for a number of years and represented the Eighth ward in the Board of Freeholders.
She is survived by two sons, Frank, former county probation officer and coach and manager of the old Emerson football team, and Joseph.
Funeral services will be held at 8 a. m. Saturday at the funeral parlors of Frank J. Leonard, 1451 Broadway. High mass will be celebrated at 9 a. m. at Sacred Heart Church. Mrs. Hyde died Sunday.
Bandit Gets $30 In Hyde’s Cafe

Joseph F. Hyde Jr., 59, operator of Hyde’s tavern, 1600 South Sixth street, last night reported an armed masked bandit robbed him of $30. Hyde told Sgt. Earl Wright and Detectives Joseph Schultz and Clifford Del Rossi a man, wearing a mask and carrying a nickle-plated revolver, entered the taproom around 10.20 and announced: “This is a stickup.”
Hyde said the man, wearing army fatigue clothes, put a piece of paper on the bar and ordered him to dump the contents of the cash register in it. Hyde said there were approximately $15 in bills and about the same amount in change.
He said two patrons in the place, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin F. Livingston, 1634 South Sixth street, were not molested.

Mrs. Benjamin F. Livingston, 1634 South Sixth street, was not present in Hyde’s tavern, 1600 South Sixth street, when it was held up by a bandit Tuesday night, her husband declared last night. Livingstone said he was in the saloon unaccompanied by his wife. A Courier-Post news story erroneously reported Mr. and Mrs. Livingston as patrons in the taproom when the gunman entered and forced Joseph F. Hyde Jr., the proprietor, to give him $30.

Mrs. Tillie Hyde, of 1600 S. 6th st., died Saturday in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital after a long illness. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Hyde, and two sisters, Mrs. Volie Wilinski and Mrs. Lillian Dunn, of Camden. Friends and relatives will meet at 8.30 a. m. Wednesday in the Prezedpelski Funeral Home, 1458 Mt. Ephraim ave. Requiem high Mass will be celebrated at 9 a. m. in Sacred Heart R. C. Church, Broadway and Ferry ave. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Joseph F. Hyde Jr., 1600 S. 6th st., a native of Camden and operator of a tavern at the 6th st. address for many years, died Sunday in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital after a long illness. He was 66. Mr. Hyde’s wife, Mrs. Tillie M. Hyde, died 4 months ago. Funeral services will be held at 8.45 a. m., Wednesday, with requiem high Mass at Sacred Heart Church, Broadway and Ferry ave. Friends and relatives will meet at 8 a. m. in the Stanley A. Zembruski Funeral Home, 1643 Mt. Ephraim ave., where they may call Tuesday evening. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
