Introduction
William H. Hubert operated a bar at 1200 Jackson Street, at the southeast corner of Louis and Jackson Streets, in the late 1940s. He is listed in the 1947 Camden City Directory at this address. Born in 1908, he was living in Camden by April of 1930.
By 1956 William H. Hubert had acquired the bar at 1672 Mount Ephraim Avenue, the corner of Mount Ephraim Avenue and Van Hook Street, most likely from the Knauer family. The Knauers had run the bar from the late 1930s through at least 1947 as Knauer’s Cafe. William H. Hubert renamed 1672 Mount Ephraim Avenue as Hubert’s Cafe, and operated the establishment into the early 1970s. William H. Hubert passed away in October of 1973 at the age of 65.
