Emerald Street

EMERALD STREET runs east from South 4th Street for one block, ending at Broadway, between Jasper and Viola Streets. Emerald Street does not appear in the 1872 Camden City Directory, but is listed in the 1878 edition. In the late 1800s and early 20th century there were a number of shanties at the foot of Emerald Street, although Jasper Street had many more.

Philadelphia Inquirer, February 4, 1912 — Further action was taken yesterday by City Solicitor Bleakly toward acquiring street ends, now occupied by corporations or individuals. He recently won for the city in connection with the Jefferson street wharf against an electric company. In the suits begun yesterday in the Supreme Court the ends of Jackson, Vanhook, Jasper, Emerald, Viola and Winslow are sought. This is all in the same locality as Jefferson street and takes in the river front south of Line Ditch.

Burned While Preparing Breakfast

Preparing breakfast yesterday morning, Mrs. Florence Graham, aged 48 years, who lives at the foot of Emerald street, Camden, was seriously burned when her dress became ignited. At Cooper Hospital it was found she had been blistered from her head to her knees on the back, while all her hair was burned off. She is expected to recover.

Peacemaker Slashed in Fight

While acting the role of peacemaker in a general row between Italians at Fourth and Emerald streets, Camden, last night, Anthony Scarduzio, 20 years old, of 1920 South Fourth street, was slashed about the throat, body and limbs. He was taken to the Cooper Hospital. The fight occurred at a game of baseball. The wounded man’s condition was reported as being critical.

One May Die as Result of Race Fight

A fight yesterday between Russians and Lithuanians at Fourth and Emerald streets, Camden, resulted in a number of broken heads and other injuries to the combatants. One of them was so seriously injured that it is feared at Cooper Hospital he may not recover. He is John Duzik, 33 years old, of 1877 South Fourth street, whose skull was fractured. Anthony Sanduski, 36 years old, of 1830 South Fourth street, is alleged to have hurled a brick which struck the injured man. Sanduski was held without bail by Recorder Stackhouse to await the result of Duzik’s injuries.

Yesterday was the hottest day of the year in Camden, the thermometers registering 94 degrees on the street.

Word was received yesterday announcing the death at Los Angeles, Cal., of Mrs. Bessie E. Howard, wife of Dr. Horace Howard, formerly of Camden.

The body of Joseph Wenne, killed at West Collingswood Tuesday by an Atlantic City liver, was buried in the Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Philadelphia, by Morgue Keeper O’Brien yesterday.

Harry Hatfield and James Mealey were held in $400 bail by Justice Thompson in Camden last night, charged with assault and battery on Patrick Campbell, a motorman on a Camden, Gloucester and Woodbury trolley car.

While acting the part of a peacemaker between belligerent neighbors, on Emerald street, Camden, yesterday, Justice Rouh was badly bitten on the leg by a dog.

Mrs. Mary Kilborn, aged 43 years, of 567 Vanhook street, Camden, was overcome by heat at the Kaighn’s Point ferry house yesterday. After recovering she was taken home.

Two Had Falls, But Fate Kind to Baby — Joseph Jackson, 2 years old, 413 Emerald Street, Philadelphia Inquirer, November 1, 1908

Leaning out the second-story window of his home, Joseph Jackson, 2 years old, of 413 Emerald street, Camden, lost his balance and fell to the brick pavement below yesterday. A passing pedestrian picked up the child, expecting to find him fatally injured, but the tot simply laughed. An examination by a physician failed to find the least bruise as a result of the tumble.

Fate was not so kind to William Ranger, 39 years old, of Holly Beach. He fell a few feet while climbing a ladder. At the Cooper Hospital it was found that William’s collarbone had been fractured.

A sneak thief stole $57 from the residence of Mrs. Mary Miller, at 415 Emerald street.

The badly decomposed body of a white man was found floating in Newton Creek, below Gloucester City.

Bridgeton. — George Green, employed in Lupton’s brick works, caught his foot in a clay-grinder and ground it to a pulp.

Mrs. Elizabeth Deckert, of 235 Erie street, who was accidentally scalded at her house several weeks ago, died in the Homeopathic Hospital.

Congressman Loudenslager has secured a favorable report in the House on his bill adding $60,000 to the appropriation for a new public building for Camden.

When Mitchell Hart was called for sentence for keeping a disorderly house it was stated he was serving a sentence in Philadelphia for keeping a speak-easy.

The Atlantic City Life Publishing Company, capital $25,000, with local incorporators, and the Imperial Tobacco Company of America, capital $250,000, filed articles of incorporation in the County Clerk’s office yesterday.

Surrogate Reeves yesterday admitted the will of Maurico Browning to probate. Isaac Doughten is named as executor.

John Powell, of 212 Burns street, a life insurance agent, while skylarking in the Masonic Temple Building yesterday, tripped over a cuspidor and fractured his leg.

Judge Jeline yesterday appointed Louis B. Humphreys administrator of the estate of Peter Dankeliman, a once prominent and wealthy confectioner.

Theresa Bell, aged 16 years, of 417 Emerald street, was badly injured about the face and head by a fall downstairs at Croft’s Woolen Mills yesterday.

The annual banquet of the Teachers’ Club will be held at the Robeson, Second and Penn streets, April 18. Covers will be laid for sixty. Prominent educators will be the guests.

John Cooper, colored, was held in bail by Justice Thompson last night, charged with perjury, in having Charles Torpey arrested for assault and battery.

The Southern Land and Colonization Company was incorporated at the County Clerk’s office yesterday with a capital of $600,000.

Rev. Dr. J. M. Haggerty, of Bridgeton, delivered a lecture on “A Trip Through Europe” at the Catholic Lyceum last night.

The Excise Board last night granted a retail liquor license to James J. Curley, 223 Federal street; Daniel J. Wood, 1103 Broadway, and a wholesale license to Salvadore Pipito, 417 Emerald street.

Woman Plunges Down Steps and May Die — Mrs. Elizabeth Marx, 417 Emerald Street, Philadelphia Inquirer, August 13, 1911

During the severe electrical storm in Camden county, a bolt of lightning wrecked a room at the home of Alexander Russell, 704 Central avenue, Camden. Neither Russell nor his wife were aware that the bolt had struck their home until they entered the room, when they found that nearly all the plaster had been torn away and smashed to small pieces.

Mrs. Elizabeth Marx, 84 years old, of 417 Emerald street, arose to lower the windows while the storm was at its height, and was blinded by the lightning and mistook a stair landing for a doorway. She fell the entire flight of stairs and landed on her head. Dr. O. W. Saunders found that her scalp had been badly torn, and owing to her advanced years her condition was critical last night.

430 Emerald Street — Lieutenant Welch Leads Raiders

Lieutenant Walter Welch, new commander of the Second Police District, conducted an intensive cleanup of his bailiwick over Saturday and Sunday, raiding 25 alleged violators of liquor and gambling laws.

Numbers Baron Nabbed

Aided by Patrolmen William Marter and Carmin Fuscellaro Sr., Lieutenant Welch conducted a series of raids Saturday night and yesterday morning. The saloon of Mary Niewinski, at 400 Mechanic Street, was raided early yesterday and two customers arrested.

Lieutenant Welch Leads Raiders

Welch, who took over the duties Lieutenant Ralph Bakley when the latter was suspended by Mayor Stewart yesterday, declared he was seeking violators of the city’s Sunday closing ordinance, which states that places selling liquor must close “between the hours of 2:00 AM Sunday and 7:00 AM Monday.”

Saloon Raided

A saloon operated by Helen Brass, 52, at 1067 Ferry Avenue, scene of an unsuccessful holdup attempt Friday, was next raided. Frank Dipeto, 42, of 829 Sylvan Street; Edward Podyezmek, 47, of 783 South 2nd Street; Joseph Orbin, 53, of 963 Florence Street; and Angelo Del Rossi, 70, of 430 Emerald Street, were arrested and held as frequenters. Mrs. Brass was charged with violating the closing ordinance.

Child Swallowed Carbolic Acid for Cough Medicine

Leopold Messic, aged 3 years, of 431 Emerald street, Camden, was admitted to the Cooper Hospital last night suffering from carbolic acid poisoning. It was stated that a member of the family gave the child the acid in mistake for cough medicine. Physicians say the child will likely recover.

Edward Moore, 19 years old, of 434 Emerald street, Camden, died in the Cooper Hospital last night from injuries received near Tuckahoe during the afternoon. He was employed as a brakeman on the Atlantic City Railroad and while assisting in making up a train fell between two cars.

TWO MEN NABBED AS NUMBERS AIDES

Nicholas Scarduzio, 32, of 427 Emerald Street, and Joseph Tavolieri, 33, of 421 Emerald street, were arrested yesterday afternoon by Detectives Clarence Arthur, Clifford Del Rossi and Benjamin Simon on charges of collecting numbers slips.

Slips totaling $25 were found in Scarduzio’s possession. Tavolieri had only a few. The arrests were made near Fourth Street and Ferry Avenue. They will be arraigned in police court to-day before Judge Garfield Pancoast.

FORMER COP IS FINED AS NUMBERS COLLECTOR

Nicholas Scarduzio, 32, of 427 Emerald street, a former policeman, and Joseph Tavolieri, 31, of 421 Emerald street, were fined $25 each by Police Judge Garfield Pancoast yesterday on charges of collecting numbers slips.

They were arrested Monday afternoon near Fourth Street and Ferry Avenue by Detectives Clarence Arthur, Clifford Del Rossi and Benjamin Simon. Numbers slips were found on both.
