Arthur Avenue

Camden, New Jersey

Arthur Avenue

Arthur Avenue, named for U.S. President Chester A. Arthur, is in the Cramer Hill section of Camden. The street had been laid out by 1887, and as Chester Arthur was not President until late 1881, was not so named until after that had occurred.

Pre-World War I maps show Arthur Avenue running along the railroad line by the Pavonia Car Shop beginning at East State Street. The railroad switching yards had so expanded that by the time the second map below, in 1946, was published, Arthur Avenue began at North 24th Street. Since those times, the street runs from North 24th Street east, across North 27th Street to North 29th Street, ending at what was Baldwin’s Run and what since about 1950 is known as Von Nieda Park.

The east side of Veterans Memorial Junior High School, built in 1938, is on Arthur Avenue between North 24th and North 25th Streets. The east side of Veterans Park, which had been the city reservoir in the 1800s, is on Arthur Avenue between North 25th and North 27th Street.

Break Into Home

Camden Post-Telegram

Break Into Home — Mrs. Penven, 2746 Arthur Avenue, Camden Post-Telegram, September 13, 1923

Some time between 10.30 Tuesday night and 5 o’clock the next morning someone broke into the home of Mrs. Penven, 2746 Arthur avenue, and stole $80 that was hidden in a drawer in a sideboard of the dining room.

Entrance was forced through a window in the rear of the house and the drawer of the sideboard, which was locked, was forced open and the money, which was wrapped in a piece of cloth, in the back of the drawer, taken.

Apparently those who broke in were aware that the money was hidden there, as they apparently did not disturb anything else and were after the money.

The police were notified and District Detective Raymond H. Stark was detailed to make an investigation of the robbery.
