Sewell Street is in East Camden. Prior to the late 1990s, Sewell Street ran for only one block, between Marlton Avenue and Morse Street. When the McGuire Gardens public housing project, originally built in 1954, was gutted and rebuilt, Sewell Street was extended to Pfeiffer Street, and several new homes were built. In the meantime, the existing homes on Sewell Street continued to deteriorate, one being completely destroyed by fire during the spring of 2008.
Sewell Street was named after Congressional Medal of Honor awardee General William Joyce Sewell, who later served as a United States Senator from New Jersey.

Responding to an alarm of fire at the home of Allan Palmer, 2205 Sewell avenue, the East Side truck company yesterday collided with the team of George Dunlap at Twenty-fourth and Federal streets. The fire, caused by a match being thrown into a hamper, caused damage of about $400.

In the picture is Christian’s wife Ida sitting on the steps with my Mother Helen. Helen is the wife of Ida & Chris’ son Evans. My mother was only 16 yrs old in this picture, I was born in that house and they moved in 1939. My Grandmother and Mother are sitting on those steps, most likely on Easter 1937. I know for sure it was that year, because I am there hiding in that picture.
