Six Begin Fire ‘Basic’

Six Camden men started basic training to become firemen today.
The six recruits bring the Camden Fire Department to full complement, according to Fire Chief Edward V. Michalak.
They are Thomas S. Watson Jr. of 1022 N. 24th St., Lloyd W. Henshall of 1153 Bergen Ave., Lloyd G. Birdsong of 2103 S. 9th St., Leon J. Johnson of 2981 Alabama Rd., Richard P. Williams of 507 S. 6th St. and Curtis J. Britt of 1144 Marion St.
Former Camden Man Gets Coast Guard Post

Garwood S. Thomas, formerly of Camden, has been placed in command of the Indian River Coast Guard station. He replaced Capt. H. Baker.
Thomas, the son of Mrs. Amanda Thomas, of this city, had been located at Lewes coast guard station for several years.

The marriage of Miss Frances Mary Pernier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis P. Pernier, of 3009 Alabama road, and Mr. Joseph A. Musick Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Musick, of 2938 Cramer street, took place this morning at 10 o’clock in St. Joan of Arc Church. The Rev. William P. McCorristin officiated.
Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a gown of ivory satin made entrain and fashioned with a tunic of Chantilly lace designed with a standup collar. Her fingertip veil of illusion was arranged from a satin bonnet overlaid with lace and she carried an arm bouquet of calla lilies.
Miss Rita T. Pernier attended her twin sister as maid of honor in a camellia pink velveteen frock fashioned with a matching cape featuring a standup collar. She carried an old fashioned bouquet of violets encircled with pink camellias. Gowns similar to that of the honor attendant, but in mauve, were worn by the bridesmaids, Miss Dolores A. Tumelty, of Lansdowne, Pa., cousin of the bride; Miss Ida M. Maccarella, of this city, and Miss Dorothy E. Pernier, sister of the bride. Their old fashioned bouquets were of pink camellias, encircled with violets. All attendants wore pleated bonnets and mitts to match their gowns.
Mr. Joseph P. Lipka Jr., of this city, acted as best man for his cousin, and ushers included Mr. Alfred Locke Jr., of Merchantville, and Mr. Frederick C. Beer Jr. and Mr. John Bullock, of Camden.
A reception followed at the Haddon Fortnightly, Haddonfield. On their return from a wedding trip to New York and the Poconos, Mr. Musick and his bride will make their home in Collingswood.

On Nov. 27, 1971, Margaret E. (nee Rodgers), wife of the late Thomas Hepworth of 3062 Alabama Road, Camden, N.J. Age 80 years. Surviving are two daughters, Miss Lillian G. and Miss Mary Ellen Hepworth, both of Camden.

Judge Baldwin postponed action of another case pending an official order from the Federal Reserve Board in Philadelphia.
This involved the will of Mrs. Annie Peiper, who before her death Nov. 17, 1941, resided at 3161 Alabama road. Her estate is valued at $8000. The will provides for monthly payments to be made for the care of a daughter, Emelie Peiper, who is residing at 533 Stevens street.
The residue of the estate was left to a sister, Mrs. Marie Kramer, of Wartenburg, Germany. Attorneys said because of the latter provision, the will has been termed “a blocked will” because of the war and a license must be obtained from the Federal Reserve before any of the funds of the estate can be disturbed.
Herbert Koehler, proctor of the estate, said he made application for the license but it has not been sent through by the Federal Reserve. Judge Baldwin postponed the case until Jan. 23.

George B. Brun Sr., 86, of 3203 Alabama rd., a retired carpenter and resident of Camden for 47 years, died Friday.
Mr. Brun was born in Norway and was the husband of Helen G. Brun, who died June 10, 1948. He was a member of the Epiphany Lutheran Church. He is survived by two sons, George B. Jr., and Arthur F., both of Camden; four daughters, Mrs. Helen G. Hess and Mrs. Marie M. Amme, both of Camden, Mrs. Elizabeth Wright, of Gloucester City, and Mrs. Thelma I. Dunn, of Bellmawr, and three grandchildren.

Noses Lead Federal Sleuths to 300-Gallon Apparatus in Fairview—2 Men Nabbed—Beer Seized in Saloon Raid
In the big Rock Candy mountains
You never change your socks,
And the little streams of alcohol
Come trickling down the rocks.
While that ditty meant joy to thousands when the song was the rage three years ago, the same melody somewhat modified today spelled gloom for two Camden men who substituted a garden hose for the rocks, and as a result, are lodged in jail in default of $1500 bail charged with illegal sale and possession of alcohol.
The trickling stream was discovered by federal prohibition agents under direction of Harry E. Johnson, chief of the South Jersey dry forces, when they sniffed the odor of alcohol as they drove through Fairview shortly before noon.
Following their noses, the agents detected a length of hose attached to the exterior of a house at 3215 Alabama road. The hose led to an attic window.
Inside the building the dry men found a 300-gallon still in operation, with 1000 gallons of mash in barrels on the attic floor. Twenty gallons of moonshine was discovered in the room and an additional 30 gallons in a garage at the rear.
The men, who were arraigned before U. S. Commissioner Wynn Armstrong, gave their names as Henry Benzuk, 36, and Alex Slusaruk, 48, both of the Alabama road address.
In a second raid, the agents seized five half barrels of high-power beer in a saloon at 521 North Seventh street. James L. Mulhearn, 32, bartender, and Mrs. Louis Nettinger, 42, alleged proprietress, were arrested. They will be arraigned before Armstrong today.
Seven Injured in Camden

In the earlier accident in Camden the automobile in which the injured were riding was dragged more than 75 yards by the shifting engine.
The more seriously injured in this accident are Albert Blair, 17, of 1144 N. 24th st., Camden, fractured skull; Robert Sharp, 16, of 1651 Alabama rd., Camden, fractured skull, and Joseph Godfrey, 10, of 208 Bailey st., Camden, mascot of the baseball team of which six other occupants of the car were members.
Those less seriously injured were: Donald Gondolf, 17, of 1462 Belleview ave., Camden, driver of the machine, lacerated face; Alphonso Burdulis, 19, of 207 Erie st., Camden, concussion of the brain; Samuel Cohen, 16, of 840 State st., Camden, lacerated head, and Richard Miller, 12, 1173 Princess ave., Camden, minor lacerations of hands.
All of the injured with the exception of Gondolf, Cohen and Miller are in Cooper Hospital.
All of the boys except Godfrey are members of the Camden Athletics, a team in the Camden Minor Baseball League, and had gone to a baseball field at 36th st. and River road for a twilight game in the car driven by Gondolf, and owned by his father, Augustus. Rain halted the game, and the sedan, with its seven occupants, had left the ball field only a few moments before the accident.
