The marriage of Miss Frances Mary Pernier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis P. Pernier, of 3009 Alabama road, and Mr. Joseph A. Musick Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Musick, of 2938 Cramer street, took place this morning at 10 o’clock in St. Joan of Arc Church. The Rev. William P. McCorristin officiated.
Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a gown of ivory satin made entrain and fashioned with a tunic of Chantilly lace designed with a standup collar. Her fingertip veil of illusion was arranged from a satin bonnet overlaid with lace and she carried an arm bouquet of calla lilies.
Miss Rita T. Pernier attended her twin sister as maid of honor in a camellia pink velveteen frock fashioned with a matching cape featuring a standup collar. She carried an old fashioned bouquet of violets encircled with pink camellias. Gowns similar to that of the honor attendant, but in mauve, were worn by the bridesmaids, Miss Dolores A. Tumelty, of Lansdowne, Pa., cousin of the bride; Miss Ida M. Maccarella, of this city, and Miss Dorothy E. Pernier, sister of the bride. Their old fashioned bouquets were of pink camellias, encircled with violets. All attendants wore pleated bonnets and mitts to match their gowns.
Mr. Joseph P. Lipka Jr., of this city, acted as best man for his cousin, and ushers included Mr. Alfred Locke Jr., of Merchantville, and Mr. Frederick C. Beer Jr. and Mr. John Bullock, of Camden.
A reception followed at the Haddon Fortnightly, Haddonfield. On their return from a wedding trip to New York and the Poconos, Mr. Musick and his bride will make their home in Collingswood.

Peiper will case

Judge Baldwin postponed action of another case pending an official order from the Federal Reserve Board in Philadelphia.
This involved the will of Mrs. Annie Peiper, who before her death Nov. 17, 1941, resided at 3161 Alabama road. Her estate is valued at $8000. The will provides for monthly payments to be made for the care of a daughter, Emelie Peiper, who is residing at 533 Stevens street.
The residue of the estate was left to a sister, Mrs. Marie Kramer, of Wartenburg, Germany. Attorneys said because of the latter provision, the will has been termed “a blocked will” because of the war and a license must be obtained from the Federal Reserve before any of the funds of the estate can be disturbed.
Herbert Koehler, proctor of the estate, said he made application for the license but it has not been sent through by the Federal Reserve. Judge Baldwin postponed the case until Jan. 23.

George B. Brun Sr., 86, of 3203 Alabama rd., a retired carpenter and resident of Camden for 47 years, died Friday.
Mr. Brun was born in Norway and was the husband of Helen G. Brun, who died June 10, 1948. He was a member of the Epiphany Lutheran Church. He is survived by two sons, George B. Jr., and Arthur F., both of Camden; four daughters, Mrs. Helen G. Hess and Mrs. Marie M. Amme, both of Camden, Mrs. Elizabeth Wright, of Gloucester City, and Mrs. Thelma I. Dunn, of Bellmawr, and three grandchildren.

Noses Lead Federal Sleuths to 300-Gallon Apparatus in Fairview—2 Men Nabbed—Beer Seized in Saloon Raid
In the big Rock Candy mountains
You never change your socks,
And the little streams of alcohol
Come trickling down the rocks.
While that ditty meant joy to thousands when the song was the rage three years ago, the same melody somewhat modified today spelled gloom for two Camden men who substituted a garden hose for the rocks, and as a result, are lodged in jail in default of $1500 bail charged with illegal sale and possession of alcohol.
The trickling stream was discovered by federal prohibition agents under direction of Harry E. Johnson, chief of the South Jersey dry forces, when they sniffed the odor of alcohol as they drove through Fairview shortly before noon.
Following their noses, the agents detected a length of hose attached to the exterior of a house at 3215 Alabama road. The hose led to an attic window.
Inside the building the dry men found a 300-gallon still in operation, with 1000 gallons of mash in barrels on the attic floor. Twenty gallons of moonshine was discovered in the room and an additional 30 gallons in a garage at the rear.
The men, who were arraigned before U. S. Commissioner Wynn Armstrong, gave their names as Henry Benzuk, 36, and Alex Slusaruk, 48, both of the Alabama road address.
In a second raid, the agents seized five half barrels of high-power beer in a saloon at 521 North Seventh street. James L. Mulhearn, 32, bartender, and Mrs. Louis Nettinger, 42, alleged proprietress, were arrested. They will be arraigned before Armstrong today.
Seven Injured in Camden

In the earlier accident in Camden the automobile in which the injured were riding was dragged more than 75 yards by the shifting engine.
The more seriously injured in this accident are Albert Blair, 17, of 1144 N. 24th st., Camden, fractured skull; Robert Sharp, 16, of 1651 Alabama rd., Camden, fractured skull, and Joseph Godfrey, 10, of 208 Bailey st., Camden, mascot of the baseball team of which six other occupants of the car were members.
Those less seriously injured were: Donald Gondolf, 17, of 1462 Belleview ave., Camden, driver of the machine, lacerated face; Alphonso Burdulis, 19, of 207 Erie st., Camden, concussion of the brain; Samuel Cohen, 16, of 840 State st., Camden, lacerated head, and Richard Miller, 12, 1173 Princess ave., Camden, minor lacerations of hands.
All of the injured with the exception of Gondolf, Cohen and Miller are in Cooper Hospital.
All of the boyes except Godfrey are members of the Camden Athletics, a team in the Camden Minor Baseball League, and had gone to a baseball field at 36th st. and River road for a twilight game in the car driven by Gondolf, and owned by his father, Augustus.
Rain halted the game, and the sedan, with its seven occupants, had left the ball field only a few moments before the accident.

Three Sentenced on Three Charges

Neutze Jails Man on Booze Evidence, One for Non-Support, Boy for Theft
A Philadelphia youth was sent to a reformatory, an owner of bootleg liquor was sent to the county jail for six months and a man, charged with desertion and non-support, was sent to state’s prison for a year yesterday by Judge Frank F. Neutze in Special Sessions Court here.
John Skodi, 16, of 804 Fairmount avenue, Philadelphia, entered a guilty plea to stealing the automobile of William Allen, of 412 North Sixth street, last July 26. He was sentenced to the Annandale Reformatory for an indefinite term.
Benjamin Wilson, of 139 Mt. Vernon street, at whose home authorities seized a small quantity of untaxed liquor, entered a plea of guilty and was given the choice of paying a $200 fine or going to jail for six months. He went to jail.
Martin Bell, of 1821 Carlton street, Philadelphia, was pictured as refusing to support his wife, Florence, of 3209 Alabama road, Camden, and their two children, Florence, 2, and Loretta, 1. The court found him guilty and sentenced him to a year in state’s prison.

Abbott Named as Temporary Department Head by Mayor

Deputy director of revenue and finance, who was named yesterday by Mayor George E. Brunner as acting director of the department of public works to take over the duties of City Commissioner Henry Magin, who died suddenly of a heart attack yesterday. Abbott is Democratic leader of the Fifth ward.
The body of Commissioner Henry Magin will lie in state in the city commission chambers Monday night.
Mayor Brunner made that announcement today following completion of funeral arrangements with members of Commissioner Magin’s family. Magin died suddenly yesterday from a heart attack at the city incinerator plant.
On Tuesday morning, the body will be moved to the Church of St. Joan of Arc, Fairview, where a Requiem Mass will be sung at 9 a. m. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Philadelphia.
Half-Holiday Declared
The public will be permitted to pay its last respects after 7 p. m. Monday. Mayor Brunner has declared a half-holiday Tuesday morning so that city employes can attend the funeral. The mayor said employes of as many departments as can conveniently be closed will be given time off.
The four city commissioners will act as pallbearers. Commissioner Kobus is in Buffalo, attending a convention, but will be home Monday.
In addition to the commissioners, Thomas Jackson, an employe of the highway department, and Samuel Magill, a former commander of Fairview Post, American Legion, also will be pallbearers.
Jackson served as a sergeant with Magin during the World War and the two men had been close friends ever since. He was named a pallbearer at Mrs. Magin’s request. A list of honorary pallbearers is being compiled by Mayor Brunner.
City, county, State, Federal and veterans’ officials are expected to view the body Monday night. Several veterans’ organizations of which Magin was an officer or member will conduct their rituals at the cemetery.
Mayor Brunner said that James O’Brien, commander of the Disabled American Veterans and president of the Veterans’ Political League which sponsored Magin as a city commissioner, will be in charge of the arrangements for services by veterans.
Edward J. Quinlan, a vice commander of the Camden County American Legion, will be in charge of memorial services in the commission chamber Monday night and military services at the grave. The funeral will be a military one, Brunner said.
Quinlan requested all veteran groups assemble at the City Hall Plaza at 7.45 p. m. Monday so they can attend the services at 8 p. m. in a body.
The police and firemen also will attend the Monday night services in a body. Firemen will be led by Chief John H. Lennox while the police will be in charge of Chief Clerk George Clayton.
Brunner said parking at the plaza will not be permitted Tuesday morning until after the funeral party has left for the church.
Commissioner Magin collapsed in the arms of James Carr, assistant superintendent of streets, a minute after he had been photographed while conversing with Samuel Burgess, an official of the Nichols Engineering & Research Corp., New York, who was inspecting the plant. The commissioner was 44.
Mayor Goes to Home
When Mayor Brunner was informed the Commissioner was dead he immediately went to the Magin home at 3043 Alabama road to console the widow, Helen, and a daughter, Helen, 20. The Mayor remained two hours until Mrs. Magin regained her composure.
Mayor Brunner announced Frank A. Abbott, deputy director of revenue and finance, will assume temporary charge of the public works department, beginning Monday.
“I appointed Mr. Abbott acting director of the department of public works in order that business and functions of the department will not be curtailed,” Mayor Brunner said. “This is the largest department in the city and it requires a directing head until such time as a successor to Commissioner Magin is elected by the City Commission.”
Abbott is familiar with workings of the department, having been acting director several weeks last year when Magin was ill in a hospital. It is reported he will be named to succeed Magin.
Although he has the title of deputy director of revenue and finance, Abbott actually is first assistant to Mayor Brunner who heads the revenue and finance department.
Abbott is serving his second consecutive four-year term as deputy. For more than 15 years he has been Democratic leader of the Fifth ward. He lives at 346 Cherry street.
Native of Camden
Born in Camden, Abbott attended Fetters school and later learned and worked at the plastering trade. He was a Fifth ward Democratic leader in days when Democrats ran for but seldom were elected to public office.
He went through several torrid political campaigns against the late John Carroll, Republican leader of the ward and political lieutenant of the late former U. S. Senator David Baird, Sr.
Abbott learned to play baseball on the rocky vacant lots in the Fifth ward. He was regarded as a fleet-footed outfielder and a fast base runner.
For a short time he had a brief fling as a dancer in vaudeville, but Pater Abbott put his foot down, ordered him to return home and learn the plastering trade.
Close Friend of Mayor
The Damon and Pythias like friendship between Mayor Brunner and his deputy is a legend in the Democratic party of Camden. One of Brunner’s first acts when he was elected a city commissioner six years ago was to name Abbott as his deputy at a salary of $3000 a year.
Brunner has stated publicly that Abbott will be his aide in any position to which he is elected or appointed. Abbott’s loyalty to Brunner is little short of devotion.
It’s Abbott’s job to keep Brunner’s appointments, admit those the mayor wants to talk to and give the gate to those the mayor doesn’t want to meet. Abbott makes a perfect buffer for the city’s chief executive.
