Camden Catholic High School Football

Camden Catholic High School, located in Camden NJ between Broadway and North 7th Street at Federal Street, fielded a football team prior to World War II. The Fighting Irish returned to the gridiron in 1946, and after mixed results in the team’s first year, became a powerhouse in New Jersey high school football.

Camden Catholic High School was badly damaged in a fire on April 17, 1960. Instead of rebuilding in Camden, a new Camden Catholic High School was built outside the city at Route 38 and Cuthbert Road.

Teammates Reunion — 2007

Last November ‘07 I attended my CCHS class 50th reunion. This is a picture of teammates taken before the CCHS-Bordentown football game that weekend on Dale Avenue, just off the Cooper River Parkway in Cherry Hill.

Left to right — Tony Fugaro, who went on to LaSalle and is an anesthesiologist in Philly. In back with dark glasses is Fred Erhardt. Fred won the Brooks-Irvine award for the 1956 season and was inducted into the South Jersey football Hall of Fame a couple of years ago. Bending over is Willie Morrell, who has owned one of the largest plumbing businesses in the Camden area for years. His older brother was Benjamin ‘Sonny’ Morrell, captain of the CCHS football team who died of a broken neck suffered during a game in 1950. I am in the middle. I attended West Point and played on the Army team that finished the 1958 season third in the nation.

On the right is Ed Scholes, who is retired from business and does volunteer work with special children. Other teammates were Elmer Galbraith, who went on to play at Annapolis, and Bill Grossman (deceased), who went on to be captain of the Delaware football team, and Dan Powers, anchor of our offensive line, who still lives in Pennsauken.
