Dr. Henry Z. Goldstein, 1920
DR. HENRY Z. GOLDSTEIN was born in Camden NJ on October 11, 1902, the youngest of four children of Solomon Joseph and Rose Zuckerman Goldstein, who lived on Broadway south of Kaighn Avenue. The Goldstein family had lived in Baltimore, and had come to Camden from Pennsylvania by 1898. Of the other Goldstein children, both Hyman Goldstein and Leopold Goldstein would also become doctors. Daughter Sadie would marry Dr. David Cooper, who practiced dentistry in Camden and South Jersey for many years.
Henry Goldstein attended the Fetters School at 1020 S. 3rd Street, and was a 1920 graduate of Camden High School, where he finished first in his class. In his high school yearbook were the following lines: “You’ll all hear Henry Goldstein speak a piece Commencement Day, Since Henry for his marks with Senior Honors walked away.”
At the time of the 1920 census, the Goldstein family was living at 1425 Broadway in Camden. Henry Goldstein attended the University of Pennsylvania on a competitive alumni scholarship, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1926. He did post-graduate studies in the 1930s at the University of Vienna and the University of Bordeaux.
After graduation, Dr. Goldstein was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve. He was called to active duty with the Army at age 38, and served as a Captain, commanding the army medical unit based at the Camden Armory during a period in 1944. Henry Goldstein would serve America in war and peace until his retirement from the service in 1960.
Dr. Goldstein did his residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, then became a resident in otolaryngology at Beth Israel Hospital in Newark NJ in 1928, and would continue his affiliation with that institution until 1964.
After returning from the Army, Dr. Goldstein resumed his affiliation with Beth Israel, where he rose to the post of Assistant Medical Director. He had a twenty-year affiliation with the Newark Board of Education, and served as a consultant to the Armed Forces Entrance Examination Station of Northern New Jersey. He served as a trustee at his synagogue, Congregation Oheb Shalom in South Orange NJ, and was a member and officer in several professional organizations.
Dr. Henry Z. Goldstein passed away on June 1, 1975. He was survived by his wife Dora and son Jerome.

Services for Dr. Henry Z. Goldstein, 72, of 320 S. Harrison St., East Orange, former assistant medical director at Newark Beth Israel Hospital, will be held at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Bernheim-Goldsticker Memorial Home, 1200 Clinton Ave., Irvington.
Dr. Goldstein died Sunday in Beth Israel Hospital. He was born in Camden and lived in Newark before he moved to East Orange eight years ago.
He was a 1926 graduate of the Pennsylvania University Medical School and was a resident physician at Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York the following two years. He was a resident in otolaryngology at Beth Israel Hospital 1928-30, and did post-graduate work in the field at the University of Vienna and the University of Bordeaux. He was commissioned in the Army Medical Corps Reserve in 1926 and retired in 1960.
During World War 2, he was a captain in the Medical Corps. From 1951-71, Dr. Goldstein was otolaryngologist for the Newark Board of Education. He was a past president of the Beth Israel Hospital medical staff and the Ear, Nose and Throat Division of the Academy of Medicine of New Jersey.
Dr. Goldstein was a trustee of Congregation Oheb Shalom of South Orange. He served as a consultant for the U.S. Armed Forces Entrance and Examination Station of Northern New Jersey. From 1948-64, he was senior attending physician in otolaryngology for Newark Beth Israel Hospital and a consultant in the field for West Hudson Hospital, Kearny. He was a member of the Essex County Medical Society, the American Acoustical Association, the Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Audiological Society.
He was a fellow of the Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology.
Surviving are his wife, Dora, and a son, Jerome.
