Eighteenth Street

Eighteenth Street runs from River Avenue north to just beyond Harrison Avenue in what was originally called the Pavonia section of what is now considered Cramer Hill. All addresses here are North 18th Street. There is also a short one-block section of Eighteenth Street in East Camden that runs south from Federal Street to Carman Street. There are no addresses on this street. The street had already been laid out by the time the 1887–1888 Camden City Directory was published and was originally called Dayton Avenue, until being renamed not long after the 1900 Census was taken.

Yuli Edelmeyer, Aged 4, Dies in Hospital—Blazing Piece of Paper Ignited Her Dress

From burns received when her dress caught fire while she was playing with her brothers at the open grate of a stove, Yuli Edelmeyer, aged 4, of 1222 North Eighteenth street, East Camden, died in Cooper Hospital yesterday. The child’s body was burned so badly that hardly a spot of white flesh remained.

The girl, with her brothers, Philip, 6, and Honus, 5, had been left temporarily alone. They secured bits of paper and had lighted them by means of the hot coals. One of these burning pieces of paper fell on Yuli’s dress and set it afire. The little brothers ran from the house in terror and their screams attracted the attention of Joseph Becker, an oil wagon driver, who rushed into the house, found Yuli a mass of flames and smothered the flames with his coat.

Survived by brother Robert Jr., of Camden, 2 sisters, Mrs. Anthony Leone of Barrington, Mrs. David Lenher of Camden. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral services on Thursday 9 a.m. at the Roedel Funeral Home, 1300 N. Kings Hwy. (Ellisburg Circle), Cherry Hill, N.J. Interment Lakeview Memorial Park. Friends may call Wednesday evening.

In 1897 Charles Miller became the editor and publisher of a weekly newspaper, The Stockton Times, which had been founded in 1894 by George Lang. Charles Miller was killed in a railroad accident in 1901. His daughter Lillian ran the paper for six months, during which time she set the type, ran the printing press, gathered the news and solicited the advertisements. Editorials were written by Rev. Roland Ringwalt. She sold the newspaper to John J. Tischner, who soon changed the title to The Camden Times.

Pfc. Bernard R. Blackwell, 22, son of Mrs. Troy Wilde, 1042 North Eighteenth street, has been awarded a Certificate of Merit for extraordinary service in removing a demolition charge from a bridge at Marburg, Germany, during the closing phases of the war. He has been overseas two years.

Private Harvey W. Blackwell Jr. also served in World War II from the same address.
