A LITTLE BACKGROUND

This website was founded in the fall of 2002. DVRBS, Inc. was a registered 501(c)3 non-profit through the end of 20012. The administrative costs of maintaining the 501(c)3 non-profit became prohibitive so the corporation was dissolved. After 2012 donations were no longer tax deductible.

This site has ALWAYS been non-profit and always will be. This is not and never will be a business. This is a "someone had to do it", and sort of became a calling.

While monetary donations have always been accepted, I rarely have actively solicited them, and have carried most of the expenses of operating the site out of my own pocket.I've run a few ads but not seen much money.

A new streets page, and three pages on Camden people that we lost in 2015… three really GOOD men.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Martin W. Baskow owned and operated the nine-thirty-nine bar at 939 Market Street in Camden NJ in the 1960s. He was brutally murdered in his bar on the morning of July 14, 1967. This case remains unsolved, almost 48 years later. If you have any information concerning this crime, please. Your identity will be kept confidential and there is a reward for information leading to an arrest.

On May 3, 1974 Margaret Day, a 19-year old student at Rutgers University, was murdered near The Grille, a popular tavern on North 6th Street near Cooper Street. Over 40 years have passed since her life was taken.

Cold cases are supposedly still under investigation. One can only hope that this truly is the what is being done and that the guilty parties will at least be charged. In the case of Martin Baskow and Margaret Day, justice delayed TRULY is justice denied.

November 17, 2015 - December 7, 2015

Back in the saddle after the Thanksgiving holiday… nice spending time with the wife and family, and nice to be back to website stuff as well… construction season is 99.9% over, and it's time to settle in for the winter! Needless to say, the tragic news from San Bernadino, where Islamic terrorists killed 14 people and wounded many others, has distracted me… or rather has taken up a lot of my attention, as well it should. That this event will be taken seriously by those in Washington is doubtful. That it is being taken seriously by individual citizens is obvious, given the increase in sales of personal defense related products… a very good thing.

No new pages this week, but I added a lot of content to the Spruce Street page. I was given a list of Camden obituaries from roughly 1890s through 1941 and I spent a lot of time last week plugging them in to the Spruce Street page. Have Fun!

I will be back in New Jersey from September 15 through September 30.

Sad news that I must share, retired Camden Police Sergeant Nelson Randolph and Camden retired Fire Department Captain Robert Lapp passed recently. I will get pages put together on both of them, and a few others, after I get back from New Jersey in October. This has been a busy time for me personally, and I hope to get most of the business wrapped up before Thanksgiving.

Four new pages and one with so much new content it might as well be new. Major props to Jose Sanchez, formerly of 115 Penn Street, who reminded me to get back on the stick and get the pages set up for the Vietnam war dead from Camden County… I have had the material assembled for a few years, just kept getting distracted and did not get all the pages set up. I'm going to try and get at least 3 a week done until that is completed. One page.. I will not tell you which, has some surprising connections to Hollywood and the music industry. The almost new page is that of Dr. Thomas F. Cullen, one of Camden's more prominent physicians in the mid-19th century. Dr. Cullen died in 1877 leaving a wife and two young daughters. His son-in-law was one of America's more prominent Shakespearean actors (and did a few films), his grandson had a long career or stage, film, and in television… and there is an indirect connection to the man who built the Ben Franklin Bridge… I'm not going to give it away, you will have to visit the page to find out! Finally, a new streets page for Terrace Avenue. I have some images to add to that page this week as well.. but could always use more. HAVE FUN.

One last thing… I will be back in New Jersey from September 15 through September 30.

A lot of work done this week on the Camden County War Dead project, and a number of mysteries… that is to say, cases where I had incomplete information regarding units and dates, were resolved. I did most of the work on these ages in 2002 and 2003, and in the intervening years more information has been made accessible on-line. All are worthy of reading about, two in particular were difficult to solve, and are very much worth looking at, Private davidayoung, from Collingswood, and Ensign Hilding Iver Wahl, from Camden.

Back at the game after finally taking a vacation with my wife… eight years and eight months of marriage and we finally had some time for a break… no job, no house projects, no family emergencies, no website (harder to quit than cigarettes), and it was worth the wait. A few new pages… streets pages concerning the "walks" at the Crescent Gardens Apartments at the extreme south end of Camden, which are interesting in that they are all named for signers of the Declaration of Independence. I should have them wrapped up by next Sunday. A new page about the late Captain Hugh Vogel of the Camden Fire Department, and a page about the Rosselli family.

SLOWLY getting back into the swing of things, with five new pages. Three "people" pages about former members of the Camden Police Department, a "streets" page about Yorkship Square, and a new page about Cramer Hill and specifically the many German families that settled there. When one talks about "ethnic" Camden, the focus tends to be on groups that settled in great numbers post-1900… Italian, Polish, Jewish, Black, and Puerto Rican. If one focuses somewhat further back they would notice previous waves of immigration, of Irish and of German-speaking people. There is a page on the site with a history of the Irish in Camden and its environs. One of these days I will pull together a few disparate things about the Germans… there are four Church buildings still standing in the city which were closely linked to the German community in the city.

On May 3, 1974 Margaret Day, a 19year old student at Rutgers University, was murdered near The Grille, a popular tavern on North 6th Street near Cooper Street. Over 40 years have passed since her life was taken.

Cold cases are supposedly still under investigation. One can only hope that this truly is the case and that the guilty parties will at least be charged. In the case of Martin Baskow and Margaret Day, justice delayed TRULY is justice denied.

A month away from the website… well, not exactly, as there has been a lot of e-mail and events… I got back to North Dakota on May 1 after a month in New Jersey with family and friends… a lot of personal stuff to attend to. This time I drove out and back… about a 3600 mile round-trip. Anyway, finally got unpacked and put some time into web-pages on Sunday May 3rd… one new page, on the late Thomas Stammerjohann, who served with the Camden Fire Department for over 35 years, and another page containing Ted Frett's Cramer Hill memories.

Once again, thanks to Pat Yocolano, who produced the fundraiser event at the ICAC in Gloucester City on April 11th. A very nice time and we cleared a little money as well. Thanks also to the many friends who attended… a lot of love in the room that evening!

Two new pages, one in particular, if you are a fan of old movies, I think you will really like. Last week Bruce Jay Smith, who has a very good group in Facebook called Camden- Yours and Mine, posted a photo and information on Camden-born character actor Jimmy Conlin, who had roles in 150 movies and television shows over a 30-plus year period. I recognized the face immediately… never knew his name and did not know he was a Camden person. Anyway, there was some information about him at www.IMDB.com and I found a good deal more by doing some grunt work digging, and I think you will enjoy the results… before his movie debut, Jimmy Conlin had worked in vaudeville and traveling medicine shows for about 28 years. I found a lot of print material and there is more available on-line.

The other new page is about Mark J. "Marty" Devine, a star schoolboy pitcher for Camden High in the late 1910s and one of the top semi-pro pitchers in the area into the 1920s, when an arm injury dictated his retirement. There is some interesting new content on the streets pages, however, to be honest, the two new pages took up most of this week's time.

On Saturday I plan to start driving back east to spend a month with wife, friends, and family… and a good many of you who read this count as friends and family! I won't be doing much page editing… I will be doing some photography and image formatting, and a whole lot of personal and family business. If our paths cross in New Jersey in the month of April, that would be lot of fun.

Finally finished the "families" project. Whew! It will be awhile before I attempt anything like that again… great (IMHO) results but a lot of time and eyestrain! In themeantime, a lot of other good stuff… DO check out the new pages… 92-year old Charley Henson, who served in the Merchant Marine before and during World War II, then got drafted, worked as an MP and later in law enforcement… sent in two long articles about his experiences, well worth the read. Carol Kelly shared letter her father wrote about his time in combat and his time as a POW during World War II. There is a new page on the Ukrainian Baptist Church that was on Morgan Boulevard from the 1930s into the 1980s, and assorted other goodies!

Right around the corner, well, around the corner and down a house or two, but close… Aprill 11th at the ICAC in Gloucester City. Most of the people have "met" over the years doing this webiste I have only met on-line. It would be fun to go face-to-face for a change!

What a week! It was just a matter of time, I suppose, that someone would contact my with enough material for a family page that would extended to multiple families (and thus, multiple pages) and also connect to pages already created about other families. Camden, after all is a pretty small place, and a whole lot happened in a relatively short time here.

Carol Kelly wrote to me seveal weeks ago. She is related paternally to the Kelly, Roles, and Griffee families, and maternally to the Engels, Hydes, and McKennas. A good number of people in these families were well known or had significant impact in Camden in their days. The challenge has been to sort it out, check for accuracy and search for missing pieces, and then present it in an easily navigable manner. I probaly have one more day of research and text work, and then come the images… and linking everything together. A lot of grunt work, but I think the end result will be well worth the effort, if for no other reason than showing how families of greatly different backgorund and means connect… love and romance will do that!

The other new page will bring back memories for the Cramer Hill people here, as Elaine Sooy Goodman has sent in an article about the many small business along North 27th Street and on the 2600 block of River Road in the 1940s and 1950s. Nice stuff, and I'm going to have to go back at some point and figure out a way to link a lot of this information to other pages on the site!

March 8th already, and I will be driving back east in three weeks. Much to do before I hit the road!

Tickets are on sale for the site fundraiser on April 11th. A good way to celebrate the end of winter… as they would say back in the day, be there or be square!

February 24, 2015 - March 2, 2015

Quality over quantity this week, reflecting events, e-mail, and material picked up on Facebook. The thre people pages are a refelction of this. Retired Camden Fire Department memeber Thoms J. Ogden passed last week, and I put a page together in his honor. A question came in the e-mail about photographer Harry F. Stains who was in business in Camden from the ealry 1900s into th early 1920s, and that led to a new page. A facebook posting of some material about Joseph H. Jordan, who had meat markets in North Camden for over 20 years led to a third page. Other correspondence brought additions to the Mechanic and Louis Street pages.

The best new material might just be on the page about Lieutenant Harvey D. Johnson, who went down with his burning fighter plane rather than risk bailing out and having it crash into a row of houses just outside of London in November of 1942.

Tickets are on sale for the site fundraiser on April 11th. This is going to be a great night, and I am looking forward to seeing old friends and finally meeting many friends who I've been corresponding with over the years face-to-face. FUN!!!!!!!

New stuff- All of the "white pages from the 1936 New Jersey Bell Telephone Directory Camden Metropolitan Area section. Three new people pages. two of them being Camden police officers of times past, George Getley and Walter Mattison. A third page isn;t exactly new, buy has been so completely reworked that I'm listing it a a new page. 47 other people received new content, much of coming from the three new pages. There is new commentary on a number of pages, including the page honoring Staff Sergeant John J. Hagan, Arlington Street, and Market Street. There is also a new class photo, from 1955, on the Henry H. Davis School page.

Tickets are on sale for the site fundraiser on April 11th. This is going to be a great night, and I am looking forward to seeing old friends and finally meeting many friends who I've been corresponding with over the years face-to-face. FUN!!!!!!!

February 10, 2015 - February 16, 2015

I spent much of the week on images, including a project of scanning the 1936 New Jersey Bell Telephone Directory… a very handy tool, considering there were no City Directories published between 1931 and 1940. It is a slow process, I have all the As and Bs scanned. I'm also pulling images from the August 1935 Courier-Post. There is just one new page, about Denfield Street.

Tickets are now on sale for the April 11th, 2015 fundraiser. I am really looking forward to seeing everyone.

Just about all streets this week… I did get the new Diamond Street and Douglass Street pages done. Most of the rest of the week went to adding content to existing pages… I went through some August 1935 newspaper ads and have snagged a lot of images.

January 27, 2015 - February 2, 2015

Three new streets pages, two in Fairview and one in South Camden, and a good reworking on the pages for the Martelli brothers, Casper and Louis, who served with the Camden Fire Department from the 1940s through the 1980s. Other pages received some edits, mostly links back to the new pages, so I'm not going to itemize them today in the intererst of saving time.

I have five more "D" streets to set up pages for… Davis, Denfield, Diamond, Douglass, and Delaware Avenue. Davis should be easy, there are very few addresses there, I have next to no material on Denfield, Diamond and Douglass are short streets.. I do have some interesting material in them. Delaware Avenue is going to be interesting… hardly anyone ever lived there, but a lot of industry had that address. I guess I'll start chipping away o these this week!

Tickets are now on sale for the April 11th, 2015 fundraiser. I am really looking forward to seeing everyone.

Most of the week was spent on one new page, about the Bunting family, who from the 1850s through the 1930s were a real presence in the old Eighth Ward. There was a lot of material to assemble, I think you will find their story quite interesting. The other new page is about a Camden fire fighter, George E. Brown Sr.

I cannot say enough good things about Pat Yocolano, who has organized the event at the ICAC in Gloucester City on April 11th. I will be back in New Jersey for an extended stay and I hope to meet a lot of people who have been on-line friends for the past 12-plus years.

Six new pages, five of them about Camden streets. Three of them in Fairview… finally getting going on these, long overdue, and two about little streets in South Camden, one still a going concern, the other erased back in the 1950s. The new "/people" page is about a fellow who was only here for about 17 years or so, but there were a lot of really nice pictures (1890s-1910s) that I just had to find a way to get them into the website! As always… HAVE FUN!!!

Two new pages, one on George Reese, a retired Camden firefighter who passed away last week, and the other on Lieutenant Junior Grade Franklin P. Goulborn Jr. of Collingswood, killed in a plane crash while training as a bomber navigator in 1951. Of course a lot of new content on the other pages noted here. Have Fun!

One new page, about Horace L. Brewer, a very interesting fellow who was very active in business and politics in Camden and Camden County for many years. At one point he owned the bar, restaurant, and banquet hall at 531-533 Market Street, across the street from City Hall.

ABOUT THIS WEBSITE

The website was off-line for almost 3 weeks in March of 2010 due to technical issues originating with the Internet Service Provider. A dedicated business connection was arranged for and the site went back on-line on March 18, 2010. This greatly increased the cost of operations, which also include subscriptions to historical and genealogical database websites, equipment, software, research-related expenses, postage, and the like.

The site was off-line from May 22, 2013 to mid-July 2013 due to the server going dead while I was out of town. The server went back on-line in August of 2013.

In the spring and summer of 2014 I began moving things to North Dakota, having been "taxed and cost-of-living-ed" out of New Jersey. The site was for the most part up, but some pages and images were not. I did not do much in the way of adding to existing pages or creating new ones during this time. I got it back on-line in late September. On October 2, 2014 the server was hacked, and it was then I found that no one was furnishing anti-virus software for Windows 2000 Server anymore. That meant buying a new server, and taking on a $3000 debt that I was not at all comfortable with taking on. At that point a couple of friends… more than that, brothers, from the Camden Fire Department stepped up and started raising funds for the website. Other friends of the website contacted me, and I took the leap of faith and ordered a new server.

On October 27, 2014 the new server was delivered and the site went back on-line. Fundraising has gone well, from what I've been told we are almost halfway there, and there are a couple of irons in the fire that should close the deal, and I cannot thank the friends and family who have come up so big to help with this. I really was at wits end a few weeks ago.
