SERGEANT STEVE J. SALATA was born in Pennsylvania to John and Bertha Salata, Hungarian immigrants, in 1921 in Pennsylvania. John Salata found work in the coal mines of Cambria County PA. In April of 1930 the family, which included older brother Louie and younger brothers John and Arthur, live at 1009 First Street in Scalp Level PA. He later lived in Somerset County PA.

Steve Salata had a grammar school education. He had worked in a shipyard, and was unmarried prior to entering the Army at Harrisburg PA on March 31, 1942. Assigned to the 77th Infantry Division, he shipped out with his unit in March of 1944. He trained with the 77th Infantry division in Hawaii prior to the 77th's being committed to the invasion of Guam, but apparently had married a girl back east prior to going to Hawaii.

Sergeant Salata was killed in action on August 12, 1944. After the war, his body was returned to the United States. He is memorialized on the Asan War Memorial on the island of Guam. His death was reported in the September 16, 1944 edition of the Camden Courier-Post. He was survived by his wife Ruth, of 306 White Horse Pike in Barrington NJ.

Staff Sergeant Salata was returned home for burial in February of 1949.
