FIRST CLASS JOSEPH SILVERMAN was born in Camden NJ to
Herman and Ethel Silverman.
He had lived at 279 White Horse Pike in Berlin NJ.
In
1930 Joseph Silverman graduated with honors from
Camden County Vocational
School, on Browning Road in Pennsauken NJ. The 1930
Class was the first to graduate from this
school.
Joseph
Silverman enlisted in U.S. Marine Corps, in
Philadelphia, on September 2, 1941. After training in this
country he served for two years at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
He was home for a 30 day
furlough at home before leaving for the Pacific late in
1943. Private Silverman saw
action in the Marshall Islands Campaign and on Saipan,
Marianas Islands, where he was killed in action, July 4,
1944, and interred in the U.S. Cemetery there. His company
received the Presidential Citation, and he was entitled to
wear the American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign
Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, and was award
posthumously the Purple Heart Medal.
He was survived
by his
parents, Herman and Ethel
Silverman, of 279 White Horse Pike, Berlin NJ, brothers
Frank and Harry, and four sisters, Florence, May, Helen,
and Gertrude. After the
war, his body was returned home, and he was buried at Crescent
Burial Park in Pennsauken NJ on January 2, 1949.
Ten
days after Joseph Silverman was killed, a member of his
high school graduating class, Army Air Force First
Lieutenant John A.
Lofland, was lost while flying a transport plane over
the Himalayas.
