SECOND LIEUTENANT CARLTON
PAUL TIERNEY was born in Wisconsin on May 23, 1916, the second son of Patrick
Tierney and his wife, the former Ora Bedell. At the time of the 1930 census, the Tierney
family
which included older brother John, lived in Sherwood Village in
Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. Patrick Tierney was then employed as an
insurance agent.
Carlton
Tierney had completed four years of college and was working as civil
engineer when he enlisted in the Army on October 21, 1942 at Chanute
Field, Illinois. Carlton
Tierney had been living in Haddonfield NJ prior to his induction, and
was single when he went to war. After joining the Army, Carlton Tierney qualified for
flight duty, and was
commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He was killed during a training
mission when the bomber he was in crashed on November 16, 1943
approximately 12 miles southeast of Walker Army Airfield, near Victoria,
Kansas. Four other members of the crew were reported killed in the
crash. Lieutenant Tierney was not the pilot.
He is
memorialized on the Haddonfield
