Head of Pyne Poynt Garden Group Says Relief Job Needs 'More Heart'

Camden Courier-Post

2100 Block — Cox Farm & Cox Garden Club

Demand that Dr. Arthur L. Stone be retained as Camden city director of emergency relief was made by Walter S. Agin, president of the Pyne Poynt Garden Club, at a meeting of the Cox Garden Club at Twenty-first Street and Harrison Avenue.

“The city gardeners ask John Colt, state director of relief, to refuse to accept the resignation of Dr. Stone,” Agin said. “They feel that a great heart like that of Abraham Lincoln in 1861 is the thing most needed today. The city of Camden and the unemployed as well as the relief administration have use for a man with a heart and a head. After all, it is not what we do for ourselves that make us great, but what we do for the other fellow. We believe there is something more than the excuse that ‘he let his heart rule his head’ for the demand of County Director Wayland P. Cramer for Dr. Stone’s resignation and for that reason we ask that Dr. Stone be retained on the job.”

More than 20,000 tomato, pepper and cabbage plants were given to the city gardeners by Daniel Deacon, Twenty-seventh street and Pierce Avenue and more tomato plants will arrive today from the Campbell Soup Company firms at Mt. Holly for distribution to the various gardens throughout the city. The Kaighn Avenue Plumbing Supply Company donated 300 feet of water pipe to the Pyne Poynt Club, while 2 tons of fertilizer were given the gardeners by the Walters Company, of Philadelphia.

John Emery, president, of the Cox Club, announced his organization has 137 gardens underway on the old Cox farm on Harrison Avenue.

Man Arrested in House Fire

Camden Courier-Post

Feud with girlfriend led to arson, police say

Article about arson at 2717 Harrison Avenue, Camden Courier-Post, December 18, 1987

CAMDEN — Police say a man set his house on fire Tuesday night after his live-in girlfriend refused to give him $300 in Christmas shopping money.

According to police, Jose Ramon Solar, 38, of 2717 Harrison Ave., started the fire after arguing with Mariam Garcia, 25, and threatening to “burn the house down” two times. The house belongs to Garcia’s mother, 50-year-old Adabelta Solar, of the 2800 block of Harrison Avenue, who is married to the suspect’s father, Vincent Solar, they said.

The home was rendered uninhabitable after combustible material was ignited in a basement storage bin, authorities said.

City fire investigator Thomas Broccoli said flames broke through the living room floor and caused extensive smoke damage before it was contained by city firefighters.

Detective Edward Hoffman, who made the arrest with Patrolman Pierre Robinson, said the suspect was found at the scene of the 8:20 p.m. fire, watching firefighters battle the flames.

Broccoli said Mariam Garcia, who is pregnant, was treated at a local hospital for a nervous reaction to the incident. She is reported to be staying with her mother.

According to Hoffman: The suspect returned home from work Tuesday in a drunken state. He demanded that his girlfriend return $300 he had given her for Christmas gifts. When Garcia refused, the suspect threatened to burn down the house. After taking a shower upstairs, he came downstairs and began to “act crazy” while demanding the money. Garcia walked to her nearby mother’s house, with Solar following her. In front of the mother’s house, he again threatened to burn down the house. He demanded the house keys, which Garcia gave to him. Garcia said she saw him walk back down the street and enter their house. A few minutes later, a woman who lives next door to the fire-damaged house, Neomi Mendez, ran to the mother’s house, screaming, “The house is on fire.”

Solar was charged Tuesday with arson and yesterday with making terroristic threats. He was being held in Camden County Jail without bail last night. Hoffman said he also was wanted in Newark for a probation violation.

2822 Harrison Avenue — A Memory

I lived at 2822 Harrison Avenue from my birth in 1928, until about 1942, when my family moved to Magnolia.

In those years, Augie Oswald owned the bar [later known as Jimmy’s Tavern — pmc], and they had a daughter, Dolly. I remember that she had a horse, and one day they had the horse in the bar. What excitement!

I seem to remember that Oswald also had a trucking business, and one day, he took us in the back of his dump truck, to see a Shirley Temple movie at the Auditorium Theater, which later became the Rio.
