Baird Boulevard
By Phil Cohen
Baird Avenue, named for Camden businessman, political leader and one-time U.S. Senator David Baird Sr., was laid out early in the 20th Century as part of the development of Camden's Parkside neighborhood. It is one of the three main roads in Parkside. It begins at Kaighn Avenue, running diagonally in a northerly direction, crossing Park Avenue at Camden High School and Farnham Park. From there Baird Avenue crosses the Cooper River and Admiral Wilson Avenue, entering East Camden, where it runs straight through across Marlton Avenue to its terminus, the intersection of Baird Avenue, Federal Street, and 27th Street— arguably the heart of East Camden.
The street was known as Baird Avenue when originally laid out in the 1900s. Homes began to appear on Baird Avenue after 1906, and there were a few empty lots in the 1500 block as late as 1924, and the Parkside blocks were referred to as Baird Avenue for many years. The East Camden side, above the Cooper River, was laid out by 1924, and from the beginning was called Baird Avenue. No homes stood on the East Camden blocks of Baird Avenue in 1924.
Baird Avenue was the home of many of Camden's most prominent citizens, from all walks of life— business, law, religion, and even organized crime!

Where the Trees and 'Islands' Came From…
Camden Courier-Post —
Residents Protest Cooper Street Widening
Two of the Cooper Street property owners who appeared at a hearing this morning at City Hall protested assessments to be levied against them for the widening of the thoroughfare from Fourth to Ninth Streets.
The objectors declared they did not feel that it was fair that they should be taxed for improvements from which they derive no benefit. Their protests were heard by the Commissioner of Assessments in the commission chambers at the hall.
The commissioners, Charles S. Wolverton, Wilbur B. Ellis, and James F. Lennon, said after the hearing that they will give further consideration to the complaints before submitting their report to the city commission. This will be done, they said, in the case of two complaints from property owners along Baird Boulevard, who protested being taxed for the planting of trees and the grading of “islands” on that thoroughfare from Bank Street to Maplewood Avenue.
Thomas J. Daley, city engineer and clerk of the assessment commission by virtue of his position, explained after the hearing that the two Baird Boulevard property owners said they felt that the expenses of the improvement should be borne by the people who erected the properties along the highway.
Daley said that each abutting property owner on Cooper Street, from Fourth to Ninth Street, will pay an assessment of approximately $5.50 per front foot for the widening. The city taxpayers as a whole, he said, will also bear $5.50 per front foot, the other half of the cost of the improvement. The total cost of the widening, he reported, was $35,126, of which abutting property owners will pay $17,400, and the city taxpayers about $17,700.
The Baird Boulevard improvement, Daley said, cost a total of $3,020, of which the abutting property owners will pay $2,140 and the city taxpayer, as whole, $880. The cost to such property owner per lot, he explained, will be about $10, all lots being about 20 feet wide.
An assessment on both improvements, Daley reported, will be fixed by the city after the commissioners of assessment file their report. The city commission will then fix a date when property owners who may have objections may appear at a public hearing.

Work Started on 8 Homes In Baird Blvd. Development
Camden Courier-Post —
Several Sold Before Ground Is Broken; 300 Dwellings Planned In Area With Small Single Residences to Be Built Soon
Ground was broken last week for a second unit of new homes being built by Forest Hill Homes, Inc., along Baird boulevard in the 2400 block between Boyd and Morse streets. There are to be eight homes in the unit now to be constructed and several of these have already been sold before construction was begun.
The homes have been approved by the Federal Housing Administration, which means it is possible for home-buyers to purchase these new homes with a very small down payment and monthly charges like rent.
The Forest Hill Homes organization plans to build over 300 homes in this vicinity. In the near future small single homes will be built.
The section in which these new homes are being built is considered to be the choicest residential section in Camden, and a number of Camden’s leading citizens reside nearby. The new homes are located three blocks north of Bridge boulevard, along Baird boulevard, which is 110 feet wide with shade trees on each side and a landscaped grass plot in the center. Stores, schools and churches are close by and the center of Camden is five minutes distant by any one of three bus lines.
The homes contain the latest features which provide comfort, convenience, beauty and economy. Each house is set back 50 feet from the street on a landscaped lot. There is an open cement plaza in front. Each home is on a lot 20 feet wide by 100 feet deep. They are built of all masonry and steel in English, Norman and Colonial architectures.
There is an arched vestibule entrance, large living room with built-in curio cabinets, dining room with an arched entrance and a crystal chandelier, “Efficiency” kitchen with a double drainboard sink, specially designed cabinets, table top gas range, inlaid linoleum cemented on a felt base, exhaust fan for kitchen ventilation. A finished recreation room is in the basement, laundry room, oil burner and an automatic gas water heater, masonry garage.
A Colonial staircase leads from the living room to the second floor, where there are three full-sized bedrooms, two colored tile baths with showers, one stall shower with a glass door. There are nine closets in the home, 52 electric outlets, four inches of Johns-Manville rock wool insulation, air conditioning, copper piping, spouts and flashings, 100 percent weather-stripped and caulked, built-in radio aerial, leaded glass window in front door, parquette floors on first floor, hardwood floors on second floor.

Man Shot in Holdup of Card Game Dies
Camden Courier-Post —
Chef, Father of 13, Loses Two-week Battle for Life; Slayer Hunted
Shot during a struggle with one of two bandits who held up a card game at 725 Penn street on January 11, Angelo Margolis, 38, of 1112 Langham avenue, lost a valiant fight for life yesterday.
Margolis, father of 13 children and a chef at the Lintonia Restaurant at 530 Federal street, died in Cooper Hospital at 5.55 a.m.
His death immediately brought county authorities into the case and a warrant charging murder has been issued for his assailant, who is known to police.
Police of New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware have been searching for the suspect since the holdup occurred in the Penn street home of Samuel Ermlios, 40, chef in a Broadway restaurant.
Also wounded by the same bullet, a “soft-nose” or dum-dum bullet, which struck Margolis, was Ross Pandeladia, 37, owner of a restaurant at 6846 Market street, Philadelphia. The bullet tore several arteries in Margolis’ arm. Police do not have the identity of the bandit who accompanied Margolis’ assailant, who also escaped, but who had suffered a beating about the head with the pistol which killed Margolis. Police recovered the weapon at the holdup scene.
Ermlios told police he had merely invited friends to the house for a friendly game, and that when the bandits entered shortly after midnight he and his guests were ordered to line up against the wall and throw their money on the table. More than $600 was taken.
As one of the bandits reached for the money the players struck him over the head with a chair and a struggle for the weapon ensued. The pistol was discharged during the struggle.
Autopsy Today
Coroner Franklin P. Jackson, 3rd, has ordered an autopsy which will be performed at Cooper Hospital today by County Physician David S. Rhone. Coroner Jackson said there is no question but what Margolis died from the effects of the bullet wound, which occasioned a large loss of blood, but that the autopsy would be held to officially ascribe the cause in county records for use by the prosecutor’s office.
Eight material witnesses arrested after the holdup probably will be recalled today to the office of Prosecutor Samuel P. Orlando and reexamined. They are Pandeladia, George Summers, 46, of 2592 Baird avenue; Samuel Bosco, proprietor of a Broadway barber shop; George Caras, 45, of 581 Mickle street; Michael Dandrea, 47, of 1667 Norris street; George Matros, and his wife, Annie, living at the Penn street address, and Mrs. Ermlios.
2 Girls, Youth Held in Probe of Fatal Card Game Holdup
Camden Courier-Post —
Arrests in Delair and Here Follow 14-Day Hunt for Dum-Dum Bandit
Two girls and a man are held incommunicado by the Camden city and county police, pending an official examination of the brain of Angelos Malagas, a restaurant cook. Malagas died in the Cooper Hospital on Sunday, 13 days after he had been the victim of a holdup and alleged assault.
Malagas was one of the victims held up in a card game at 725 Penn street on January 11 and died after making a valiant fight for life.
The three prisoners are Luigi Tortu, 21, of 426 Line street, Camden; Pearl Wills, 18, of 7900 Day street, Delair, and Evelyn Buffa, 18, of 810 Florence street, Camden. Tortu was arrested yesterday in Delair as he was keeping a “date” with the Wills girl. He was seized by Detectives Harry Kyler and Thomas Murphy, of the city detective bureau, and James Mulligan of the county staff.
Second Girl Arrested
The Wills girl also was arrested and after the pair were questioned the sleuths came to Camden where they picked up Miss Buffa.
None of the detectives last night would give an inkling as to the reason for holding the prisoners “on ice,” or if any charges would be preferred against them.
Meanwhile Coroner Franklin P. Jackson III refused to give a certificate of death until the chemical test of Malagas’ brain is made by Philadelphia experts. Dr. David S. Rhone, county physician, sent the organ away yesterday, after Dr. Rhone had performed an autopsy. Dr. Rhone refused to disclose result of the post-mortem at this time.
Malagas’ funeral will be held from his home, 1110 Langham avenue, at 3 p.m. tomorrow, and from the Schroeder home, 715 Cooper street. Burial will be in Locustwood Memorial Park.
Hunted for 13 Days
Thirteen days’ hunt for Tortu came to a climax yesterday when the detectives learned that the young man was calling frequently on the Wills girl at her home. Armed with this information they went to Delair, posted themselves in the vicinity of the Wills’ home and waited for their quarry.
They were there a short time when Tortu appeared and was arrested immediately. The Wills girl and her friend, Miss Buffa, are said to be held as material witnesses, but the detectives refused last night to tell where they were detained.
Two men were identified with the holdup, according to the victims’ story told to the police. A search by the police of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware for the fugitive, who is believed to have severed Malagas’ arm with a “dum dum bullet” has been in progress since the crime was committed.
Also wounded in the holdup was Ross Pandeladia, 37, owner of a restaurant at 6846 Market street, Philadelphia.
Police do not have the identity of the bandit who accompanied Malagas’ assailant. The fugitive suffered a beating about the head with the pistol which was said to have been used on Malagas. Police recovered the weapon at the holdup scene.
The occupant of the place, Samuel Ermlios told police he had merely invited friends to the house for a friendly game, and that when the bandits entered shortly after midnight he and his guests were ordered to line up against the wall and throw their money on the table. More than $600 was taken.
As one of the bandits reached for the money the players struck him over the head with a chair and a struggle for the weapon ensued. The pistol was discharged during the struggle.
Eight material witnesses arrested after the holdup will be recalled to the office of Prosecutor Samuel P. Orlando and re-examined. Ermlios.
Tortu was arrested late in December, 1937, when detectives took four suspects whom the police sought to identify with various holdups committed in South Jersey during the latter part of last year.
Tortu then gave his address as 426 Line street. Arrested at the same time was a girl who said she was Evelyn Buffalo, and who gave the address, 322 Penn street, as her home. It was at the Penn street house that the suspects were arrested.
Others captured at the time were Frank Luggi, 21, 322 Penn street; Nicholas Dandrea, 27, of 529 Line street, and Frederick Gasperone, who gave a false address when he was booked.
Justice of the Peace George Wilkinson, of Stratford, held Luggi, Gasperone and Dandrea for the grand jury, on the charge of breaking into the garage of Albert Weston at Stratford on Thanksgiving. Tortu was discharged.

With him at the time of the hold-up was another bandit, whose identity police do not know. While this search is in progress, Angelo Margolis, 38, of 1110 Langham avenue, is in Cooper Hospital, shot through the arm, and in a serious condition from loss of blood, received in a battle with the robbers.
Ross Pandeladia, 37, owner of a restaurant at 6846 Market street, Philadelphia, slightly wounded during the battle that followed the “stickup,” had his burns treated at the Jefferson Hospital and was held as a material witness in $500 bail for a hearing on the case January 18.

Camden Lad Gives Vacation Savings To Help Veterans
Camden Courier-Post —
Paul Rothman, 11, of 2596 Baird boulevard, yesterday visited the Camden bonus camp with $5.20 tightly clutched in his hands. The money represented savings he planned to spend on a vacation trip this year, but Paul was touched by stories of hardship the veterans are facing and he expressed a desire to do his bit.
His father, William Rothman, proprietor of the Barrett Tire Shop, 560 Carman street, took 500 bags of tobacco to the veterans. Rothman and his son were accompanied by Charles Harlacher, of the Camden Duplicating Company, 720 Federal street.
On arrival at the camp young Paul learned that tooth paste was sorely needed by the veterans and he spent his savings for more than 50 small tubes of this requisite. A large group of the bonus seekers gave the boy and his father resounding cheers of appreciation.

4 Trapped in Blaze Saved by Firemen
Camden Courier-Post —
By JOSEPH McCARTHY, Courier-Post Staff
City firemen fought smoke, flames, snow and a biting cold during the night and early morning hours as a rash of fires severely damaged four buildings and destroyed a tavern.
According to Public Safety Director Keith Kauffman, at one point only two engine companies were not actively fighting the blazes as seven engine companies, three ladder companies, the rescue squad and three battalion chiefs were at the fire scenes.
At the site of the worst fire, 5th and Mickle Streets, police and firemen braved dense smoke and fierce flames to rescue four elderly persons trapped in first, second and third floor apartments.
Started In Tavern Lounge
The blaze, which broke out in the lounge of Ray’s Tavern, was discovered by Patrolmen Augustus Balzano and Anthony Saponare at 3:58 a.m. after they were alerted of smoke by highway employees battling the second snowstorm of the week.
The two policemen, after radioing the alarm, kicked in the door of the tavern and raced through the smoke and flames to rescue Mrs. Agnes Lockhart, 58, from her upstairs apartment.
The patrolmen took Mrs. Lockhart to Cooper Hospital where she was admitted with a cut head and smoke inhalation.
Minutes later firemen, headed by Battalion Chief Biaggio Ardire, arrived. Ardire said the tavern was engulfed in smoke and flames. He said the flames leaped from the tavern roof to a luncheonette and apartment building next door.
Ardire said firemen raised a ladder to the third floor of the second building where Mrs. Mabel Seward, 64, was hanging from a window ledge. However, firemen were hampered in the rescue attempt by the narrow space of the alley and could only hold the screaming woman until other firefighters could make their way to the third floor window from inside the building.
The rescuers, wearing face masks, wrapped Mrs. Seward in blankets and carried her through the flames to safety.
Two Carried Out
At the same time, more fire fighters entered the burning building and carried out Mrs. Viola Lagerprantz, 65, who lived in a rear apartment on the first floor and John J. Smith, 86, from a second-floor apartment.
All the victims were taken to Cooper Hospital for smoke inhalation treatment and released an hour later.
Kauffman ordered the victims, still wrapped in blankets, taken to fire headquarters at 3rd and Arch Streets and notified city welfare authorities. The Welfare Department obtained temporary housing for the three victims at Volunteers of America headquarters, 828 Market Street. Each victim lost all possessions in the blaze.
Additional Alarms
Ardire, at 4:27 a.m. called for additional fire crews and an hour later requested more aid. Battalion Chief Daniel Jiannetto’s unit answered the first distress call while Acting Battalion Chief Arthur Batten’s men arrived on the second plea.
Batten’s unit had been fighting two North Camden blazes since 10:53 last night.
Ardire said that when firemen attempted to get into the buildings, the fire was raging forward, backward, and straight up the stairwells out of control.
The owner of the luncheonette, Dominic Padulla, arrived at the scene about 5:30 a.m. Padulla and his brother, Frank, who also had been out, live on the first floor.
Canteen Truck on Scene
Volunteers of America Canteen truck with Colonel William Gwynne also was at the scene and served firemen coffee and donuts.
Fire Chief Edward Michalak said he has ordered a complete investigation of the fire.
Kauffman said 5th Street south of Mickle and Mickle Street east of 5th has been closed to traffic indefinitely.
In the two other fires in North Camden, a grocery store was damaged at 442 N. 9th Street, and two vacant buildings at 623–625 North Front Street were damaged.
Grocery Store Blaze
Batten said a defective chimney apparently caused the grocery store blaze which raged through joists and partitions. The store is operated by Benjamin Lamberte while the building is owned by Mrs. Sarah Schecter of Baird Boulevard according to the battalion chief.
Batten’s crew were forced to make two trips to the vacant buildings as wind whipped flames. He said the fire probably was caused by vagrants seeking shelter from the snowstorm.
Before the firefighters could take off their fire apparel, they were dispatched to the 5th and Mickle Street blaze.
3 Hurt in Boulevard Accident Caused by Runaway Bakery Horse
Camden Courier-Post —
Animal Rams Car Stopped for Traffic Light; Passengers in Two Other Automobiles Injured in Crash
A runaway horse was the indirect cause of three persons being slightly injured last night at Admiral Wilson boulevard and Baird avenue.
According to Detective Thomas Murphy, the horse, which had broken loose from a tether in the yard of Ralph Marchione, operator of a bakery at 3939 Marlton pike, rammed into the rear of an automobile driven by Jack Silverman, of 506 Beideman avenue. Silverman was stopped on Baird avenue for the traffic light at the intersection.
Charles Bleyer, 57, of 905 Atlantic avenue, Atlantic City, was driving north on the boulevard when he saw the runaway horse. He stopped and got out to lead the horse from the highway.
He left Mrs. Lillian McNamara, 44, of 419 Trenton avenue, in his car when he got out. Another automobile, driven by Harold B. Ash, 20, of 982 North Twenty-third street, crashed into the rear of Bleyer’s car, police said.
Mrs. McNamara, Ash and John F. Dease, 20, of 109 North Sixth street, a passenger in Ash’s car, suffered lacerations. Ash and Mrs. McNamara were treated at Cooper Hospital for minor cuts, while Dease was treated by his physician.
Police reported the horse also was hurt when he rammed Silverman’s car.
‘Stocking’ Bandit Hunt Underway
Camden Courier-Post —
Police are searching for two armed bandits who early today held up the night clerk of the Oasis Motel, Admiral Wilson Boulevard, and made off with $104 in cash.
According to police, John Manning, 60, of 2120 Watson Street, was alone in the office when two men wearing gray caps and stocking masks over their faces entered through a rear door.
After Manning turned over the money in the cash register, the bandits forced him to accompany them, he said. When they reached the top of the ramp near Baird Boulevard, he was freed. The two bandits fled on foot in the direction of Park Boulevard.
Manning said one of the hold-up men was about 5 ft. 5 inches tall, the other 5 ft. 7 inches. Both were described as Negroes, about 25 years old.
An undetermined amount of money, including money collected for the New Jersey Sales tax, was reported stolen today by a South Camden tavern owner.
Steve Raczykowski, owner of Steve’s Tavern, 1800 Fillmore Street, said he was unable to estimate immediately how much cash and merchandise were stolen.
Police said Clara Iaveccia, who lives in an apartment above the tavern, heard noises below at 5 a.m. and called police. They found a grating on a cellar window had been removed and a door leading to the bar forced.
Commissioner Asks Legal Opinion on Plot Restrictions
Camden Courier-Post —
Plan Filed in 1921 Says Only Private Dwellings Can Be Erected
CITY DECLARED LOSER
In an effort to see if something may not be done for industrial, commercial and residential development of real estate on each side of Admiral Wilson boulevard from Baird boulevard to the Pennsauken township line, City Commissioner Frank J. Hartmann, Jr., yesterday contacted City Solicitor E. C. G. [sic] Bleakly.
An odd restriction in the Forest Hill Gardens plan is believed to have deprived the city of Camden of considerable business, Commissioner Hartmann said.
The restriction, incorporated in a plan by Walter MacNamara, filed in October, 1921, provides that “No improvements other than private dwellings costing not less than $2500 with privileges of private garages shall be erected on any lots shown on said plan . . .”
The plan covers the area from Baird boulevard to the city line and from Cooper river to Marlton pike. Lots fronting on Baird boulevard, and lots 1 to 58 fronting on Marlton pike are excepted.
As a result, Commissioner Hartmann said, many factories, gas stations and other business have sprung up in Pennsauken that might otherwise have been opened in Camden.
Threatens Action
Unless the restrictions are removed, the Commissioner warned, he will insist that valuation of the property on the bridge boulevard east of Baird boulevard should be so increased as to force owners to build to increase city revenue and justify the value of the land.
“Either there will be worthwhile buildings or higher assessments comparing with upper Admiral Wilson boulevard property,” the commissioner said.
Properties on the south side of Admiral Wilson boulevard, their frontage and valuation are: (east from Baird boulevard) Camden Safe Deposit and Trust company, 766.72 feet, $8650 valuation for ground; Hatch Land Improvement company, 145 feet, $3425 for land and $7825 for improvements; Forest Hill Boat club, 60 feet, $350 valuation for ground; and Camden Safe Deposit and Trust company, $25,550 for ground as far as the city line.
Properties Listed
On the opposite side of the bridge boulevard are the following properties:
Baird to Somerset street; First Camden National Bank and Trust, 103 feet, $2125 valuation for ground; Henry B. Coles, Jr., 56 feet, $2125 for ground; Combex corporation, 40 feet, $1925; Blanch I. Smith, 40 feet, $1925; Combex corporation, lots of 60, 40 and 90 feet, assessed at $2875, $1925 and $4325.
Somerset street to Thorndyke street; Camden Safe Deposit and Trust, 400 feet, $19,200 for ground.
Thorndyke street to city line: Camden Safe Deposit and Trust, 380 feet, $18,250 for ground; Raflin Realty company, Inc., 3 lots of 60, 60, and 65 feet, assessed at $2875, $2875 and $3125.
