Introduction
HARRY MAILAHN was born on June 17, 1926 to William Harry Mailahn and his wife, the former Florence Cummiskey.
The 1927 and 1928 City Directories shows the family residing at 1117 Lawrence Street. William Mailahn was working as a driver. The 1930 Census shows the family at 1015 Lawrence Street, with William Mailahn working as a driver for an ice company.
The 1940 Census shows the family, which included older siblings Anna and Louis, and a younger brother, Albert, living at 3108 River Avenue in Cramer Hill. William Mailahn was then working as a deckhand.
Harry Mailahn served in the United States Navy during World War II. He returned to Camden and married Evelyn Winner. A son Harry Jr., was born in October of 1949. In May of 1950 Harry Mailahn took the Civil Service test for a position on the Camden Police Department. In October it was announced that he was one of seventy-seven who passed. He successfully tested for the Fire Department around the same time. The Mailahns were then living at 405 Beideman Avenue, in the Westfield Acres public housing project. They were still at that address when, on January 16, 1951 Harry Mailahn was appointed to the Camden Fire Department. He was soon assigned to Engine Company 9. They had moved to 243 South 32nd Street by April of 1953.
By 1956 the family had moved to 905 North 21st Street. By the 1959 the Mailahn family had moved to a house at 2924 Royden Street in East Camden.
Harry Mailahn was still working for the Fire Department when he died of heart failure at his home, 2924 Royden Street, on February 1, 1971. He was survived by his wife, sons Harry Mailahn Jr. and Charles Mailahn, daughter Sandra Mailahn, and his mother, Mrs. Florence Mailahn.

Firemen ‘Visit’ Fireman’s Home To Battle Fire

A fireman returned from an errand this morning to find many of his colleagues at his home at 2924 Royden st.
Members of Engine Co. 9, of which Harry Mailahn is assigned; Engine Co. 11 and Truck Co. 3, had been called a short time before to put out a fire in the Mailahn kitchen.
Mailahn went off duty at 8 a.m., returned home and then left to go on an errand. His wife, Evelyn, and their youngest child, Sandra, 2, left the house to visit a neighbor.
A passerby saw smoke coming from the house and called firemen. Firemen, under Acting District Fire Chief Leonard Oshusher, had to don masks to get into the house.
Oshusher said the fire apparently began in a kitchen chair, damaging a portion of the kitchen and sending smoke throughout the house. Two other children were at school.
The fire was under control when Mailahn came home.

Services for Harry Mailahn, 44, of 2924 Royden St., Camden, will be 11 a.m. Friday in the Harry Leonard Funeral Home, 2850 Federal St., Camden, where friends may call tomorrow night. Burial will be in New Camden Cemetery, Camden.
Mr. Mailahn, a city fireman for 21 years, died Monday in his home.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; two sons, Harry Jr., stationed aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Stickell, Charles of Camden, a daughter Sandra, his mother Florence Mailahn, a brother and two sisters, also of Camden.

Relatives and friends of the family, also members of the City of Camden Fire Department, are invited to attend the funeral on Friday, 11 a.m. from the Harry Leonard Funeral Home, 2850 Federal Street, Camden, N.J. Interment New Camden Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday evening.
