Private Leon Atkinson Lippincott was born November 10, 1895 at Moorestown NJ to Mr. and Mrs. George S. Lippincott. The family lived at 611 Bailey Street in North Camden prior to America’s involvement in World War I. Leon Lippincott worked in Philadelphia as a storekeeper for Gately & Fitzgerald at 619 Market Street.

When the United States entered the war in April of 1917, he attempted to enlist three times, but was rejected by regular Army recruiting officers due to his poor eyesight. In September of 1917, he was drafted, and sent to Camp Dix NJ. He was assigned to Company H, 18th Infantry Regiment, and went overseas with that unit in January of 1918.

Private Lippincott was wounded in the leg on July 18. He recovered and returned to his unit. He was killed during the major offensive in the Battle of the Argonne Forest on October 5, 1918.

Leon Atkinson Lippincott was survived by his parents, of 611 Bailey Street in Camden NJ. He was 23 years old.
