Technician Fourth Grade Richard L. Eberhard was born in February 1917 in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, the son of Karl and Anna Eberhard. In 1920 the family owned a home at 678 Bulson Street, near the corner of South 7th Street, in Camden. Their home fronted the railroad tracks that run from the Camden Waterfront to destinations in southern New Jersey, and was within sight of the Camden Brewery. Karl Eberhard worked as a crane operator at a shipyard, most likely the nearby New York Shipbuilding Company. In 1930 the family was still at the Bulson Street address, now including younger children Earl, Mary Jane, and Bernice. Richard Eberhard attended Camden County Vocational School in Pennsauken for three years. He later worked for the Oaklyn Motor Sales Company in Oaklyn NJ.
Richard Eberhard entered the United States Army on August 20, 1942, and went overseas in December 1943, assigned to the Service Company, 350th Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division. He was killed in the fighting to take Monte Grande in Italy on October 18, 1944, when German artillery shelled the 350th Infantry Regiment’s command post in the very late afternoon.
His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried at Locustwood Burial Park in what is now Cherry Hill NJ on June 11, 1949. He was survived by his mother, Anna C., and his father, Karl E. Sr., of 54 Woodland Road, Bellmawr Park; his brothers Howard (Brooklawn), Karl E. Jr. (Oaklyn), and Earl (Gloucester); and sisters Mrs. Lena Florch (Ventnor), Mrs. Whelmina Baker (Corpus Christi, TX), Mrs. Marion Hummel (Bellmawr), Mrs. Marie Fenton, and Miss Bernice Eberhard (both of Bellmawr Park).
Note: While his grave marker records a birth date of January 6, 1923, his U.S. Army enlistment record and U.S. Census records from 1920 and 1930 indicate a birth year of 1917.

Funeral services for T/Sgt. Richard L. Eberhard will be held Saturday at 10.30 a. m. in the Woodland Avenue Presbyterian Church, Eighth street and Woodland avenue. Friends may call at the church at 10 a. m. Burial will be in Locustwood Memorial park under the direction of Frank J. Leonard.
Military rites will be conducted by a squad from Ft. Dix.
Sergeant Eberhard was killed in action in Italy Oct. 18, 1944, at the age of 24. He was a member of the service company of the 350th Infantry of the Fifth army. Entering the service Aug. 20, 1942, he went overseas in December 1943.
