Introduction
Chelton Avenue, when laid out, was to run from the Delaware River through to Mt. Ephraim Avenue, between Jefferson Avenue and Bulson Streets. Chelton Avenue does not appear in the listing of streets in the 1872 or 1874 City Directory, but does appear in the 1878 edition, running West to East as indicated above, between “Venango and Issy Streets.”
A map published in 1914 but most likely compiled in the 1890s shows Chelton Avenue running to the foot of the Delaware River and stopping at South 11th Street. Today Chelton Avenue runs from South 4th Street without interruption to South 10th Street, where it becomes private property, providing the only roadway that allows access beneath the Interstate Highway and the railroad tracks between Ferry Avenue and Morgan Street.
A number of industrial facilities lay on Chelton Avenue in bygone days, including the General Gas Mantle plant between South 4th and Arlington Streets, Sitley & Sons grain elevators, and the J.C. Dunn oilcloth factory. The Camden City Brewery, home of Camden Beer, was just off of Chelton Avenue at South 6th Street. Staley Park, a large city-owned park, was developed in the early 20th Century, and in the early 1940s the Chelton Terrace Public Housing project was along Chelton Avenue east of South 7th Street. Chelton Avenue was and is mostly residential east of the former project, which terminated in the 800 block. The old Chelton Terrace projects were razed in the 1990s and new public and private housing was built in the following decade.

Mayor, City Aides To Confer Monday On Weed Removal

MARIJUANA PLANTS have been found by city inspectors who are conducting a campaign to rid the city of unsightly grass and weeds. Wherever found, the plants are destroyed by spraying with a plant killer. F. James Hainsworth, superintendent of the city asphalt plant, is shown pointing out the plants to a group of women living in the neighborhood of a city-owned lot at Chelton Avenue and Arlington Street. Mayor Brunner announced today he will call a conference Monday to coordinate city departments in the movement to remove unsightly grass and weeds in the city.
Attending the conference Brunner said will be Director of Public Works Abbott, his deputy, James Swanson; J. James Hainsworth, superintendent of the city asphalt plant; Director of Parks and Public Property Gotshalk; S. Raymond Dobbs, acting chief of the bureau of city property and John Salvatore, who is in charge of workers in the city property bureau.
“The purpose of the conference,” Brunner said “is to coordinate the work of the various city departments in the projects being conducted to clear the city of high grass and weeds.
“There is equipment in the park system that could be used to advantage in cutting down the grass and weeds. Working together, the various city departments will be in a position to clear away weeds and grass on city-owned property.”
Grass Around Hydrants
Meanwhile, department of public works workers today started to remove grass and weeds from around fire hydrants, utility poles and traffic standards.
The weed removal crew today went to work on Federal, Cooper and Market streets in the central part of the city, and in the vicinity of the Camden Civic Center.
Swanson said that on Monday, the crew will complete Market street to Twelfth Street, and Arch Street, and then concentrate in the North Camden area.
“After that section is completed” Swanson said, “The crew will go down Broadway, working the South Camden and then the Parkside and Whitman Park areas.
Leaves E. Camden to Last
“We are leaving the East Camden section to last, because the New Jersey Water Company owns most of the fire hydrants in that area, and they have been requested to remove the grass and weeds from their hydrants.”
Swanson said he was looking forward to being able to utilize men and equipment from the other city departments in the program.
“If all the departments pledge their full cooperation” Swanson added, “we should be able to beat the weed problem within a week.”
Abbott points out that since the campaign was started, workers from his department have uncovered and destroyed a large number of marijuana plants that were growing wild on lots in the city.
One of the largest tracts of marijuana plants was uncovered on a lot owned by the city, which was converted into a playground at Chelton Avenue and Arlington Street. More than 200 plants were found on the lot.
Violators Face Fines
Workers today destroyed more than 100 marijuana plants on a vacant lot on Chelton Avenue, between Master and Van Buren Streets.
Property owners were cautioned by Abbott that unless they remove unsightly weeds and grass from their property they would be hauled into police court.
Abbott said flagrant violators would be subject to fines ranging up to $200.
Warning notices have been sent to more than 300 property owners where inspectors from Abbott’s department found grass and weeds to be growing wild. “The majority of property owners in the city,” Abbott said, “are cooperating in the campaign. We plan however, to be tough with owners who refuse to remove grass and weeds from their property after being warned by our inspectors.”

*County Physician Jones yesterday gave a certificate of death from heart failure in the case of Enos P. Reeves, 52 years old, of 412 Linden street, who died suddenly on Thursday night.
*Walter Dill, 18 years old, of 558 Chelton avenue, Camden, accidentally shot himself in the breast yesterday while handling a revolver at his home. He was seriously but it is thought not fatally wounded.
*A Coroner’s jury yesterday relieved the Pennsylvania Railroad Company of responsibility for the death of Philip Smith, of Philadelphia, who was killed by falling from a train at Fourth and Bridge avenue on Christmas night.
*The new gymnasium of the Y. M. C. A. will be opened by a public reception on New Year’s Day. It is 45x80 feet and has been fitted up at a cost of $2000. It is fitted with all the latest appliances, A. G. Villee, of Norfolk, Va., will be the physical director.
*The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Philadelphia and Beach Haven Railroad was held in Camden yesterday when the following officers were elected: President, William J. Sewell; secretary, F. W. Schwarz; treasurer, John M. Wood; directors, William Bettle, Wilson Brown, Robert B. Engle, Henry D. Welsh, Charles S. Ridgway and Samuel Rea.

NEHEMIAH L. BUNDY — Nehemiah L. Bundy, 65, of 907 Chelton ave., died yesterday in the Camden County Chest Hospital at Lakeland. He was a carpenter for the Camden Housing Authority. Surviving are his wife, Olga; seven sons, Frank of Camden.

After John Savish, of 915 Chelton avenue, Camden, had been invited into the home of Peter Koszynski of 916 Florence street, last Sunday he told Recorder Stackhouse yesterday he had been attacked by the host and Charles Jykunas, of 916 Chelton avenue. He was beaten over the head with a blunt instrument and rendered unconscious. When he recovered he found himself outside the place, his head badly cut and $19 missing from his pocket. His two alleged assailants were held without bail for court.
