Introduction

By Phil Cohen

Webster Street is a small street that runs east from Ferry Avenue for two blocks until it reaches its end at Broadway. The street was laid out prior to 1878 and there were people living on Webster Street in the 1870s. At some point after 1906, houses on Ferry Avenue and Van Hook Street were razed and South Fourth Street was extended out from Everett Street South, through Webster to Ferry Avenue.

Baby Girl Killed In Tumble From Auto of Father

Camden Courier-Post

Baby Girl Killed In Tumble From Auto of Father — Camden Courier-Post, October 6, 1953

A 15-month-old Philadelphia girl died under the wheels of her father's car in an accident at Sicklerville on Monday and a 55-year-old Camden woman, injured Friday in another accident, died at Cooper Hospital without regaining consciousness.

Police at Sicklerville identified the little girl as Roseanna Hoffman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James J. Hoffman, of 2452 Cedar st., Philadelphia.

The Camden victim was Miss Mary Burchell, 55, of 937 St. John st., who was struck by a car at Broadway and Chestnut st. and never regained consciousness.

Gloucester County Coroner William R. Hofner, of Williamstown, said the little girl killed at Sicklerville fell against the door of her father's car as he was making a turn. The door opened, and the child toppled under the rear wheels of the machine.

Camden police said Miss Burchell was struck on the head by the rear view mirror of a car driven by Louise Mammaccio, 20, of 383 Webster st., while running for a bus. She was not identified until late Saturday at Cooper Hospital.
